"Reflecting on the Grateful Dead's Capitol Theatre Shows and Toby Keith smoking with Willie Nelson"Larry Michigan discusses the Grateful Dead's historic show at the Capitol Theatre on February 19, 1971. Larry reminisces about the atmosphere of the venue and the significance of the performance, highlighting the debut of several iconic Dead songs. The discussion delves into the band's evolving musical style, particularly the transition from psychedelic blues to Americana influences. He explores the historical context surrounding the show, including Mickey Hart's departure from the band and the impact of manager Lenny Hart's embezzlement. He also touches upon the significance of the show's release in the "From the Vault" series and discuss other notable releases in the Dead's catalog. Additionally, Larry provides updates on Bob Weir and Wolf Brothers' postponed performances with the National Symphony Orchestra and share news about upcoming music releases.  Grateful DeadFebruary 19, 1971 (53 years ago)Capitol TheatrePort Chester, NYGrateful Dead Live at Capitol Theatre on 1971-02-19 : Free Borrow & Streaming : Internet Archive The second of the legendary six night run at the Capitol Theatre in late February, 1971:Feb. 18, 19, 20, 21, 23, and 24 INTRO:                  Loser                                Track #3                                2:55 – 4:24 Hunter/Garcia tune that was released on “Garcia”, Jerry's first solo album, in January, 1972, the last song on side one of the album.  It was a standard first set tune, part of a rotating number of Jerry first set ballads including Candyman, It Must Have Been The Roses, High Time, Row Jimmy, To Lay Me Down and others. A very sweet melodic tune that tells a great story by way of a beautiful piece of music.  SECOND time playedPlayed a total of 353 timesFirst time:  “Last”night 2.18.71Last:  June 28, 1995, The Palace of Auburn Hills, outside Detroit                               THIS SHOW: Last year we covered the Feb. 18th show famous as the debut for Bertha, Greatest Story, Loser, Wharf Rat and Playin In The Band and the Beautiful Jam out of Wharf Rat and back into Dark Star.  It was also Mickey's last show before his almost three year hiatus before he returned for the final 1974 show before the band's 1975 year off February 19th show is just as historical:  The band's first show without Mickey since he joined the band in 1967.  Many people theorize that this was Mickey's response to his father, Lenny Hart who was the band's manager stealing almost $155,000 of the band's assets before disappearing.  Although he was eventually located by a private detective hired by the band and arrested in San Diego on July 26, 1971, convicted and spent six months in jail, the money was never returned.  The song, “He's Gone” is based on Lenny Hart's embezzlement and disappearance.  Ashamed by his father's actions, Mickey left the band after the 2.18.71 Capitol Theater show returning full time in 1975.  Lenny died of natural causes on Feb. 2, 1975.  According to Dennis McNally, "Mickey went to the funeral home, cleared the room, took out the snakewood sticks that had been his inheritance, played a traditional rudimental drum piece, "The Downfall of Paris" on Lenny's coffin, and split." Starting with this show, the band became a very lean mean fighting machine with just five members (Jerry, Bobby, Phil, Bill and Pig) until Keith jointed the band seven months later in September.  On this night, the band played the five songs debuted the night before and debuted Deal and Birdsong.  Pig also has a strong showing this night leading the band through four standouts:             Hurts Me Too            Smokestack Lightning:  the third to last time it would be played with Pig in the band            Easy Wind:  the second to last time it would be played without Pig in the band            Good Lovin  This really marked the beginning of the band's hard shift away from psychedelic blues (Primal Dead) to the more Americana style music that began with Workingman's and American Beauty.  Within a year, Pig would be very ill with just enough energy left for the Europe '72 tour.  But this night, he was rocking the house like only he could do.  Here is the first of his four featured songs:  SHOW No. 1:      Hurts Me Too                                Track # 5                                2:08 – 3:42 Great showcase number for Pig featuring his singing and harp playing.  We got just a bit of Jerry's lead but all this great music is too long to fit into one clip – don't want Dan getting mad at me! "It Hurts Me Too" is a blues standard that is "one of the most interpreted blues [songs]".[1] First recorded in 1940 by Tampa Red in Chicago, the song is a mid-tempo eight-bar blues that features slide guitar. It borrows from earlier blues songs and has been recorded by many artists.  Release on May 10th with Tired of Your Reckless Ways on the B-side. In 1949, Tampa Red recorded a variation of "It Hurts Me Too", titled "When Things Go Wrong with You".[9] It was recast in the style of a Chicago blues, with electric guitar and a more up to date backing arrangement. The song was a hit and reached number nine on Billboard'sRhythm & Blues Records chart in 1949.[10] (The original "It Hurts Me Too" was released before Billboard or a similar reliable service began tracking such releases, so it is difficult to gauge which version was more popular, although the former's title won out over the latter's.) Although the song retained the refrain "When things go wrong, so wrong with you, it hurts me too", Tampa Red varied the rest of the lyrics somewhat. This would become the pattern for future versions, in which succeeding artists would interpret the song with some of their own lyrics. Noted covers:            Elmore James            Junior Wells            Grateful Dead – with Pig singing the vocals.  Was first released by the Dead on Europe '72 album.  After Pig left the band, the song was retired.             The Dead played the song a total of 59 times            First:    May 19, 1966 at the Avalon Ballroom, San Francisco            Last:     May 24, 1972 at the Lyceum Ballroom in London (last show of Europe '72 tour             “FROM THE VAULT”: This entire show was released by the Dead as “Three From The Vault” in 2007.  The “From The Vault” series, launched by the Band in 1991 with One From The Vault – August 13, 1975 at The Great American Music Hall, with first live performance of the songs from Blues For Allah.  In 1992 the Dead released “Two From The Vault” – August 23 and 24, 1968 at the Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles.  Then, along came Dick Latvala and his Dead scene changing Dick's Picks series which was wildly popular, so much so that the In The Vault Series was put on hold.  For 15 years.  Until 2007 when they circled back to the original series of live releasees with Three From The Vault which features the same show we are talking about today from the Capitol Theatre.  That was it for In The Vault releases.  The Dead did have several other “Vault” like releases – multi-track recordings including Hundred Year Haul, Dozin' At The Knick, Fallout From the Phil Zone, Terrapin Station, Live At the Fillmore East 2.11.69, Ladies and Gentlemen, the Grateful Dead, Nightfall of Diamonds, Trucking Up To Buffalo and so many more. They just stopped calling them “From The Vault”.  Dick's Picks, of course would go on to have a total of 36 releases, the last few releases coming after Dick's death in 1999.  Which led into the still wildly popular Dave's Picks from David Lemieux who took over for Dick and now has 49 releases and still going strong.  And “short” lived, but generally popular  “Roadtrips” series.  And all of the box sets that are all amazing but too numerous to name except for the Complete Recordings, the four-night run at the Fillmore West from Feb. 27 to March 2, 1969 – four shows with the band at the peak of Primal Dead, and Europe '72 which consists of the live recordings for all of the shows on that tour.  Another milestone for the Dead in terms of their ever expanding reputation for Jam Band, psychedelic, and amazing song catalogue, even at that “early” stage of the band's existence.  SHOW No. 2:      Playin In The Band                                Track # 7                                2:23 – 4:05                                            By:  Weir and Hunter "Playing in the Band" is a song by the Grateful Dead. The lyrics were written by Robert Hunter and rhythm guitaristBob Weir composed the music, with some assistance from percussionist Mickey Hart.[1] The song first emerged in embryonic form on the self-titled 1971 live albumGrateful Dead. It then appeared in a more polished form on Ace, Bob Weir's first solo album (which included every Grateful Dead member except Ron "Pigpen" McKernan). The instrumental break of "Playing in the Band" was introduced as early as the February 19, 1969 "Celestial Synapse" show at the Fillmore West, in which it appears somewhat indistinct from the preceding and following jams.[5] The completed song was also included on Mickey Hart's 1972 solo album Rolling Thunder within "The Main Ten", making reference to the song's time signature of 10/4.  "The Main Ten" appears on Dick's Picks Volume 16, from their performance at the Fillmore West on November 8, 1969. On that set, it appears in the middle of "Caution (Do Not Stop On Tracks)".During a Bob Weir and Wolf Bros concert livestream on February 12, 2021, Weir credited David Crosby with the composition of the main riff. Weir stated, "David Crosby came up with the seminal lick... and then he left. We were out at Mickey's barn. So Mickey said, 'Make a song out of that'. Next day, I had it" It has since become one of the best-known Grateful Dead numbers and a standard part of their repertoire, usually as a second set pre-drums jumping off point for jams to who knows where. According to Deadbase X, it ranks fourth on the list of songs played most often in concert by the band with over 600 performances. If you download this show from Archive.org, and play this track, at the 3:20 mark during the mid-song jam, they get to the point where they would normally dive back in but instead, Bobby plays on for an almost additional 30 seconds and then just dives back in to the song.  He is clearly still working it out.  Over the course of the Europe '72 tour, it was played almost every night as Bobby finally worked it outThis is all really good stuff. SECOND time ever played 661 times (No. 1)                First – “last: night's show, Feb. 18, 1971 Capitol Theatre                Last:       July 5, 1995 at Riverport Amphitheater, Maryland Heights, MO outside of St. Louis.                SHOW No. 3:      Greatest Story Ever Told (The Pump Song)                              Track #13                           Start – 1:41               By Weir, Hart and Robert Hunter (some give credit to Rev. This week's Deadpod features the continuation of the band's performance at the Orpheum Theater in San Francisco on July 13, 1976.  There are issues with the tape on 'Music Never Stopped' but this clears up quickly so please be patient.  'It Must Have Been the Roses' follows, then 'Samson' but the highlight here is a beautiful version of 'High Time'.  After some pause, they go into 'Saint Stephen' into 'Not Fade Away' , quite interesting at times..they then move into 'Sugar Magnolia' and you think that this must be the end of the set, but Jerry comes back with a stunning 'Stella Blue'. They do the 'Sugar Mag' reprise, but then return for a pretty outrageous encore - a long and funky 'Dancin' In the Streets'..    Grateful Dead 1976-07-13 Orpheum Theatre - San Francisco, CA Two     The Music Never Stopped [6:03] % It Must Have Been The Roses [6:50] % Samson And Delilah [7:12] % High Time [8:05] % Saint Stephen [10:55] (1) > Not Fade Away [4:35] > Drums [0:18] > Saint Stephen [0:46] > Sugar Magnolia [3:33];[2:36] ; Stella Blue [10:30] > Sunshine Daydream [3:17] Encore     Dancing In The Street [15:40] Comments     (1) {Saint Stephen [4:57] > 'transition' Jam [5:58] }  You can listen to this week's Deadpod here:  http://traffic.libsyn.com/deadshow/deadpod080522.mp3 Stay cool and listen to the music play!

This week's Deadpod comes from the famous 'Day on the Green' #1 at Oakland Stadium on June 8, 1974.  This first set of this 'Wall of Sound' show, features less jamming than will be coming up in set 2, but still some wonderful playing, highlighted by some great contributions from Keith and Phil. In this week's episode of 36 From The Vault we find the band playing a Sunday - Tuesday run in late-Summer 1974. The jams are deep, the country is in turmoil, and idiots are climbing the fence. This volume hears The Dead at perhaps their most exhausted, two months shy of their hiatus, but willing to explore the outer realms of their musical ideas. Like two of the three previous ‘74 Dick's Picks, this one works like a playlist, capturing some of the best - and some of the most questionable moments - of the mid-Atlantic run.Disc One begins with a wild 25min dive into expansive 70's Miles jamming by way of “Playin' In The Band” before moving into a groovy “Scarlet Begonias.” Elsewhere “China Cat Sunflower -> I Know You Rider” shows off its 1974 breezy jamming. Disc Two is highlighted by a mellow “Weather Report Suite” which then moves into a jam proper that, while not as extended as the Dick's Picks 12 version, still highlights the sense that anything could be jammed amidst the Watergate scandal. On Disc Three we hear a stunning “Mississippi Half-Step Uptown Toodeloo -> It Must Have Been The Roses” segue. Later, we hear “Truckin'” take over the set through a vast jamming segment that touches on “The Other One” and “Space” before moving into a gorgeous “Stella Blue.” Disc Four is in the running for the best Discs of the entire Dick's Picks series. One of the greatest “Eyes Of The World” ever kicks us off before moving into a 38min “Playin' In The Band -> Scarlet Begonias -> Playin' In The Band” and then finally, “Uncle John's Band” closes us out. It's a stunning release for jamheads and a vivid picture of The Dead at the end of their hallowed 1972-1974 single drummer run.36 from the Vault is a production of Osiris Media. From a show I was lucky enough to see, in a beautiful venue, this week's Deadpod takes us to Cleveland for a show back on November 20, 1978 at the Cleveland Music Hall.  This is a very interesting and well played show. The second set, which we will hear next week, is most unique, but this first set is certainly worth hearing, despite some obvious flaws in the recording.  The opening Mississippi Half-Step into a fine Franklin's Tower clocks in at over 20 minutes, and features some fine jamming by Garcia. I'm a fan of the Roses, and while 'Looks Like Rain' suffers from a tape flip, its still nice to hear. An early 'Stagger Lee' follows, then a fine ' Passenger' and a long sweet, 'Peggy O'. The closing 'Lazy Lightnin'>Supplication' is perhaps the highlight of this set; listen for Jerry's great solos here.   Grateful Dead Cleveland Music Hall Cleveland, OH 11/20/78 - Monday     One     Mississippi Half-Step Uptown Toodeloo [9:10] > Franklin's Tower [11:38] ; Mama Tried [2:30] > Mexicali Blues [3:44] ; It Must Have Been The Roses [7:33] ; Looks Like Rain [7:33] ; Stagger Lee [6:47] ; Passenger [4:21] ; Peggy-O [9:02] ; Lazy Lightnin' [3:36] > Supplication [5:41]   You can listen to this week's Deadpod here:  http://traffic.libsyn.com/deadshow/deadpod111221.mp3  My thanks for your kind support of the Deadpod.

This week's Deadpod features a wonderful recording of the band's performance in Paris France on September 20, 1974. This is a splendid recording, and a very interesting performance. The band opens with a spirited 'Cumberland Blues' followed by a nice 'Jack Straw'. The first-set 'Scarlet Begonias' features some very nice Phil leads. Bobby's vocals are top-notch on the 'Black Throated Wind' that follows. The 'Friend of the Devil' that is performed afterwards, is one of the last 'fast' versions the band played. We get to hear a full 'Weather Report Suite' highlighted by some nice keyboard work by Keith. Jerry follows with a soulful 'Stella Blue'. This week's second set from Roosevelt Stadium in Jersey City NJ, is one of the best of that year, in my opinion. It starts out with a smokin' Help>Slip>Frank, the Slipknot here is particularly great. A wonderful summertime 'Dancing In the Street' follows, then 'The Wheel', and 'Samson'.. again Phil is way up in the mix and I only wish I could hear him so well more often.. 'Roses' follows, with the '76 tempo.. personally I wish Donna was a bit farther up in the mix here.  The rest of the set is classic Dead, starting off with a rockin' 'Not Fade Away' into Drums, then a wonderful, exploratory jam leading into the 'Other One'. This one knocks my socks off. Ship of Fools and Sugar Mag close the set with a Johnny B. Goode encore.        Grateful Dead Roosevelt Stadium Jersey City, NJ 8/4/76 - Wednesday Two     Help On The Way [6:20] > Slipknot! This week we continue with the second set of the band's performance from The Ohio State University on September 30, 1976. This features an unusual setlist starting with an unexpected and rather powerful 'Lazy Lightning', and then, after some lyrical stumbles, goes into a heated 'Supplication'. 'It Must Have Been the Roses' starts out somewhat slowly but builds to a very nice finish. An excellent 'Samson and Delilah' follows, with Phil throwing out some snappy bass lines. The band then moves into the jamming portion of the show, with 'Saint Stephen' followed by a neat little jam before heading into a powerful 'Not Fade Away'. Drums moves into a dark murky place before we hear the opening chords of a fine 'Wharf Rat' which follows. They then move into the 'Not Fade Away' reprise, then a short 'Saint Stephen' reprise before closing the set, a bit clumsily, with 'Around and Around'.  The encore however is quite a treat, as they return for a intense and powerful 'Morning Dew'.   Grateful Dead Mershon Auditorium - Ohio State University Columbus, OH 9/30/76 - Thursday Two     Lazy Lightnin' [3:15] > Supplication [4:49] It Must Have Been The Roses [7:08] Samson And Delilah [7:36] ; Saint Stephen [4:52] > Jam [5:23] > Not Fade Away [7:43] > Drums [5:49] > Wharf Rat [11:#14] > Not Fade Away [3:43] > Saint Stephen [0:57] > Around And Around [6:52] Encore     Morning Dew [13:58]  You can listen to this week's Deadpod here:  http://traffic.libsyn.com/deadshow/deadpod052121.mp3   Thank you for your kind support.    "Love is real, Not Fade Away"

Notable moments include a 22 beat start to 'Beat It On Down The Line', some great Keith throughout, a lovely 'It Must Have Been The Roses', the elusive 'Loose Lucy' and to top everything off, a very long and spacy 'Playin' In the Band' which closes the set and is punctuated with Garcia teasing the 'Slipknot!' jam in several spots.      Grateful Dead Winterland Arena San Francisco, CA 2/22/74 - Friday     One   U.S. Blues [5:27] ; Beat It On Down The Line [3:22] ; Brown Eyed Women [4:52] ; Mexicali Blues [3:36] ; It Must Have Been The Roses [4:43] ; Black Throated Wind [6:53] ; They Love Each Other [5:39] ; Big River [5:08] ; Loose Lucy [6:35] ; El Paso [4:33] ; Row Jimmy [8:30] ; Playing In The Band [20:55] You can listen to this week's Deadpod here:  http://traffic.libsyn.com/deadshow/deadpod022621.mp3    thanks for your kind support

In this week’s episode we explore Dick’s Picks Vol. 17 from the Boston Garden in Boston, MA on September 25, 1991. In addition, this show features two bonus tracks from Charlotte, NC on March 31, 1991. Midway through a fantastic run at the Garden, and in some of the last shows the band would play with Bruce Hornsby, this is a great peek into the consistency of The Dead in 1991, and the benefits of playing extended gigs during this period. Steve & Rob are joined by Dead Archivist, David Lemieux, who made this his first pick in the series, for a fantastic conversation about the Grateful Dead organization & his approach to picking releases. Disco One opens with a hot “Help -> Slip -> Franklin’s” before “It Must Have Been The Roses” and “Dire Wolf” provide the surprise Double Jerry dip. Disc Two flows with jamming precision. Kicking off with the dimly lit “Victim Or The Crime,” the disc peaks with the “Playing -> Terrapin” jam session, which only goes to showcase the similarities of the two songs. Disc Three opens with the rare cover of Paul McCartney’s “That Would Be Something,” before diving into an endless run of Set Closers. The bonus material is highlighted by one of the best “Eyes Of The World” of the 90’s, and one of the best versions of it we’ve featured on the show. An absolute gem to spin, it showcases the experimental communication of the Hornsby years. 36 from the Vault is production of Osiris Media. It is edited and produced and mastered by Brian Brinkman. This week's Deadpod features a fine show from June 24, 1976 at the Tower Theater in Upper Darby PA, near Philadelphia. This spring '76 tour features mail order tickets for the first time, and rejuvenated vocals from Bob and Donna, who seem to have benefited from the time off. This particular show was broadcast on FM but this is a soundboard copy and I think it sounds great. This one also has a hilarious opening by Bob and Phil - worth keeping the rather longish tuning in place ;) I think you'll find that Keith is particularly fine throughout, but especially on Big River.. Listen to Jerry make that axe howl in Tennessee Jed ;) And what beats a first set Scarlet Begonias?   Dog days of summer? Nothing beats them like some good 'old Grateful Dead - and this somewhat overlooked classic from the summer of 1974 is sure to leave you smiling.. This comes to us from July 29th, 1974 at the Cap Center in Landover Maryland.  This first set contains some of the classics, of course, as well as some surprises, like the stand alone Scarlet Begonias and the beautiful 'To Lay Me Down'. Here's a pretty little set to send out the month of May in style.. This one comes to us form May 17th, 1978 at the Uptown theater in Chicago Illinois. This one starts with the first ever 'Mississipi-Half Step'>'Franklin's Tower' combo, and one that showcases some really nice licks from Mr. Garcia (and I should add some very nice work from Mr. Weir as well). The next two are Bobby's - 'Me and My Uncle' into a tight 'Big River'. Lovely versions of 'It Must Have Been The Roses' and 'Looks like Rain' showcase the more laid back side of the Dead as well as what Donna Jean could add  in terms of backing vocals. A rolling "Tennessee Jed' follows, with Keith adding some nice color and Jerry adding some spirited vocals to make for a real good time. Bobby encourages the crowd to wish Mickey and Billy a Happy Birthday.... then they play a full on Funiculi Funicula... They close with a nice 'Lazy Lightnin'>Supplication'...     Grateful Dead Uptown Theatre Chicago, IL 5/17/78 - Wednesday One Mississippi Half-Step Uptown Toodeloo [9:24]> Franklin's Tower [14:19] ; Me And My Uncle [3:04] > Big River [5:44] ; It Must Have Been The Roses [6:53] ; Looks Like Rain [9:05] ; Tennessee Jed [8:57] ; Funiculi Funicula [1:25] ; Lazy Lightnin' [3:20] > Supplication [6:38]   You can listen to this week's Deadpod here: http://traffic.libsyn.com/deadshow/deadpod053119.mp3     As always, I want to acknowledge and thank the kind folks whose support makes the Deadpod possible.. I always love to feature a show from the historic September 1990 run at Madison Square Garden in New York City. This week I decided to bring you this wonderful show from Wednesday, September 19th 1990. This first set is energetic, and played wonderfully. Of course, the band was finding itself anew after losing Brent, and Bruce Hornsby's fourth show as a member of the band, bringing a new vitality to the group. A great 'Jack Straw' starts thing soff, but don't overlook the energy on 'Big River'. What could be better than a set closing 'Help'>'Slip'>'Frank'?  Second set next week..      Grateful Dead Madison Square Garden New York , NY 9/19/90 - Wednesday One - [1:06:04]   Jack Straw [5:58] ; Bertha [6:55] ; Me And My Uncle [3:09] > Big River [6:01] ; It Must Have Been The Roses [5:15] ; Stuck Inside Of Mobile With The Memphis Blues Again [8:31] ; Help On The Way [4:16] > Slipknot! The laid back rhythms of '76 make for a perfect compliment to the hot weather as we explore a wonderful show from June 11th, 1976 at the Boston Music Hall in Boston MA. A very clean recording and sweet solos by Garcia highlight this set.  Love the pace of this Tennessee Jed.. Big River will definitely get you up after a sweet and sleepy Candyman.. you'll feel the power building in the Scarlet as the music sweeps you away. A pretty and soulful 'Looks Like Rain' follows. A year ago I played what many would consider the 'big brother' to this week's Deadpod selection - 6/23/74. This week I'm going to begin to feature the night before - 6/22/74 Miami Florida. This band may stumble on occasion here.. the levels take a bit to get 'just exactly perfect', but remember it was a 'wall of sound' show, and overall this is a great recording. The first set which we will hear this week has more 'studio' type versions than long jammed out pieces, however there is still plenty here to sink your teeth into. Some very unusual and fine jamming in 'Greatest Story', a fine 'Jack Straw' and stand-alone 'Scarlet'. 'The Race is On' is always a joy to hear, and the set closing 'Playin' in the Band' is fabulous; I'm especially fond of Phil here..   Grateful Dead Jai-Alai Fronton Miami, FL 6/22/74 - Saturday One The Promised Land [3:18] > Bertha [5:24] ; Greatest Story Ever Told [5:34] ; Deal [4:42] ; Me And Bobby McGee [5:33] ; Scarlet Begonias [6:45] ; Jack Straw [4:40] ; Loose Lucy [4:43] ; Mexicali Blues [3:22] ; Sugaree [6:56] ; The Race Is On [3:07] ; It Must Have Been The Roses [5:23] ; Playing In The Band [29:14]   You can listen to this week's Deadpod here: http://traffic.libsyn.com/deadshow/deadpod062918.mp3     Let me be the first to wish you a very happy 4th of July! Legendary Four Roses Distillery Manger Al Young treated the Beast Masters to an incredible Kentucky bourbon barrel picking session that produced the OBSV awesomeness now known as, “It Must Have Been The Roses”. When we arrived at Four Roses on a sunny morning in March, Al had a number of casks laid out for our day’s picking endeavor. Under Al’s expert guidance we tasted through six barrels pulled from a variety of Four Roses’ rickhouses and spanning a nice cross section of their different recipes. When all was said and done, our crack team of Hot Pickle Society inductees landed on the High Rye OBSV BEAST of a bourbon that has been dubbed, “It Must Have Been The Roses.” This bad boy stuck out immediately in the tasting as a deep, rich, spicy, flavorful bourbon with a gorgeous finish that goes on for days. We sat down to chat with Al following our epic barrel picking session to review the barrel pick and get a bit of Al’s perspective on the world of whiskey and how we’ve come to where we are now in the industry. We also discussed Al’s 50th Anniversary bottling and the formulation the special blend of Four Roses selections picked for this special commemorative limited edition. We hope you enjoy cracking open a bottle of It Must Have Been The Roses and sipping along with us. We’re very glad to be able to share this with you all.

As March blows in we go back in this week's Deadpod to the spring of 1981, and one of the fine shows from the band's run at Madison Square Garden. Last year we played the previous evening's show, but this performance from March 10, 1981 deserves a spot on our favorites as well. The show beings with a Mississippi Half-Step that starts off great, then a shocking bit of feedback/reverb blows through the sound system - the band simply plays through it like the pros they are, but don't let it throw you off, this is a great version! This flows into a fine, stand alone version of Franklin's Tower. I always enjoy these, and this one is no slouch. Me and My Uncle follows with Weir joking that the earlier feedback was all planned. They slow it up a little with 'Roses'. Don't Easy Me In occupies a rare mid-set position, and there is some nice improvisation in the Lazy Lightnin'->Supplication transition. A strong first set that I hope puts you in a fine space as we roll into early March!    Grateful Dead Madison Square Garden New York , NY 3/10/81 - Tuesday   One Mississippi Half-Step Uptown Toodeloo [11:36] > Franklin's Tower [11:03] > Me And My Uncle [3:05] ; It Must Have Been The Roses [6:18] > Little Red Rooster [6:12] ; Don't Ease Me In [3:15] ; Lazy Lightnin' [3:24] > Supplication [6:03] ; Brown Eyed Women [5:27] > Looks Like Rain [9:19] > Deal [7:13]   You can listen to this week's Deadpod here:  http://traffic.libsyn.com/deadshow/deadpod030317.mp3     My thanks for your kind support!!

This week I'm pleased to present the second set of the band's performance at the Uptown Theater in Chicago Illinois on February 1st, 1978. They come out of the chute smoking with a great 'Samson and Delilah' - one listen and you know they're taking no prisoners tonight. They slow it down with a beautiful.. and powerfully sung,  'Must Have Been The Roses', Those voices start talking to Weir as 'Estimated Prophet' follows and takes us on a great ride..nice transition leads into 'He's Gone'. this leads into a nice Drumz and a great jam that follows which flows into 'The Other One'. Some great Phil here.. and Garcia soars.  The pathos of 'Wharf Rat' follows, then we're led back into the light with a great 'Sugar Magnolia'.  The band follows with a rocking 'Around and Around' to close the Wednesday night show..    Grateful Dead Uptown Theatre Chicago, IL  2/1/78 - Wednesday   Two Samson And Delilah [8:24] ; It Must Have Been The Roses [7:47] ; Estimated Prophet [12:27] > He's Gone [10:47] > Drums [6:13] > Jam [8:18] > The Other One [11:02] > Wharf Rat [9:47] > Sugar Magnolia [10:04]  Encore Around And Around [8:00]    You can listen to this week's Deadpod here:  http://traffic.libsyn.com/deadshow/deadpod021017.mp3   Hope you're not snowed in!!   hold back the darkness..    thanks so much for your support!

Happy Thanksgiving my friends! If  you've listened to the Deadpod for awhile you know I enjoy bringing you acoustic music around the holidays - this year is no different and I think I've got an excellent show lined up for you. First off, one of the famous acoustic shows form the fall of 1980, this comes to us from the Warfield in San Francisco on October 4th, 1980. There's not a bad song in this set.. but some of my favorites are the 'Race Is On', 'It Must Have Been The Roses', 'Dark Hollow' and 'To Lay Me Down'.. the set-ending 'Ripple' still brings chills..   Following this wonderful set, we have a marvelous performance of the complete Terrapin Suite from some great musicians honoring the Dead tradition today - Joe Russo's Almost Dead. A little over a month ago they performed an acoustic Terrapin Station that surely deserves to be heard. I hope you enjoy it as much as I have.....   Grateful Dead Warfield Theatre San Francisco, CA 10/4/80 - Saturday   One Deep Elem Blues [4:13] ; The Race Is On [2:53] ; It Must Have Been The Roses [5:48] ; Monkey And The Engineer [2:48] ; Rosalie McFall [3:06] ; Dark Hollow [3:13] ; To Lay Me Down [8:34] ; On The Road Again ; Oh Babe It Ain't No Lie [5:34] ; Ripple [4:30]   Joe Russo's Almost Dead Brooklyn Bowl, Brooklyn NY 10/7/16 Terrapin Station Suite (Acoustic)     You can listen to this week's Deadpod here:  http://traffic.libsyn.com/deadshow/deadpod112516.mp3   I'm grateful to all of my friends who listen to the Deadpod each week and allow me the chance to spread the light and love contained within.   thank you .. -the professor

This week's Deadpod features the second set from October 15th, 1976 at the Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles, CA. I think this set has several very interesting moments. The first is the fine transition from the opening 'Eyes of the World' to 'The Music Never Stopped'. This was a the only time they ever played these two in this order, but I wonder why when listening to this performance. A long He's Gone leads into a short drums but then a mighty 'Other One'. The 'Comes A Time' that follows is one of the best, and probably the highlight of the set. A great 'Franklin's Tower->Sugar Magnolia' which closes the set is marred a bit by the fact that we only have the audience tape here. I hope you enjoy this performance from the Fall of 1976..     Grateful Dead Shrine Auditorium Los Angeles, CA 10/15/76 - Friday   Two   Eyes Of The World [10:05] > The Music Never Stopped [5:54] ; It Must Have Been The Roses [6:26] % Samson And Delilah [6:40] % He's Gone [14:30] > Drums [5:12] > The Other One [13:27] > Comes A Time [10:08] > Franklin's Tower [12:22] > Sugar Magnolia [8:24]   You can listen to this week's Deadpod here: http://traffic.libsyn.com/deadshow/deadpod102116.mp3   My thanks for your support of the Deadpod.

I think we have a really top-notch set for you this week. The second set from April 19th, 1978 at the Veterans Memorial Auditorium in Columbus Ohio is filled with wonderful jamming and great song selections. It starts with the always energetic 'Samson and Delilah', then moves into a great version of 'It Must've Been The Roses' .. I think you'll find Donna (and Keith) both shine in this set. A nicely jammed out 'Estimated Prophet' leads into a fine 'He's Gone'. The Drums that follows to me showcases the importance of this part of their show at its best.. this one clocks in at 18 minutes.. They come out of Space into 'The Other One', then flow into a perfectly placed 'Wharf Rat'. Around and Around closes the set but the boys return to give us the first ever cover of 'Werewolves of London' and it is a keeper!   Grateful Dead Veterans Memorial Auditorium Columbus, OH 4/19/78 - Wednesday Two Samson And Delilah [7:23] ; It Must Have Been The Roses [7:18] ; Estimated Prophet [14:19] > He's Gone [11:10] > Drums [18:#56] > Space [8:37] > The Other One [8:14] > Wharf Rat [9:57#] > Around And Around Encore Werewolves Of London [10:27]     You can listen to this week's Deadpod here:  http://traffic.libsyn.com/deadshow/deadpod042916.mp3   Thanks as always to all of you who listen to and enjoy the Deadpod each week. Happy New Year! It just wouldn't be right if I didn't feature a NYE show on this date, and while many of the shows that the band played on New Years Eve were a bit of a letdown, I think I've chosen one that wasn't.. this comes to us from New Years Eve 1981. While the boys opened with an acoustic set with Joan Baez, I had to spare you that and omit it from this podcast. I did not however, omit anything else - over three and a half hours of great Dead awaits you in this special New Years' podcast. All three sets including a wonderful Shakedown Street opener, an unusual Iko,Iko to ring in the New Year, Terrapin Station, a fabulous Morning Dew which closes set 2, and an excellent Dark Star to open set 3. I hope you have plenty of time to savor this Deadpod over the holiday weekend, and I sure hope you enjoy it!   Grateful Dead  Oakland Auditorium  Oakland, CA   12/31/81 - Thursday One Shakedown Street [15:15] ; Me And My Uncle [2:59] > Mexicali Blues [4:41]; Cold Rain And Snow [6:20] ; C C Rider (1) [8:32] ; It Must Have Been The Roses (2) [6:27] ; Beat It On Down The Line [3:33] ; Big Boss Man (1) [6:01] > New Minglewood Blues (1) [6:10] ; Don't Ease Me In [3:12]   Two   Iko Iko [7:24] ; Playing In The Band [14:49] > Terrapin Station [12:24]> Playing In The Band [4:28] > Drums [9:55] > Space [7:40] > The Other One [11:09] > Not Fade Away [7:28] > Goin' Down The Road Feeling Bad [7:21] > Morning Dew [10:44]   Three   Dark Star [15:16] > Bertha [6:32] > Good Lovin' [10:03]   Encore  It's All Over Now, Baby Blue (2) [7:07]   Comments An acoustic set with Joan Baez preceded the Dead only sets, set list was: Me & Bobby McGee ; Bye Bye Love ; Lucifer's Eyes ; Children of the 80's; Banks of the Ohio. It is only fitting that we go back to the famous 'acoustic' shows of 1980 for this week's Deadpod. This was a request from one of my wonderful listeners for a show that not only features the famous acoustic first set, but outstanding electric sets 2 and 3. The first set is a treat for everyone who enjoys the acoustic Dead, and while I do like to feature this genre around the holidays, the arrival of Fall is reason enough to revisit this wonderful music. Since the acoustic set was not quite as long as I prefer for a Deadpod, I've also included the first part of the electric set 2, including a fine Mississippi Half-Step ->Franklin's Tower..  I know I've featured a number of sets from 1980 this year, and I hope you enjoy this one just as much as those others..      Grateful Dead Warfield Theatre San Francisco, CA 10/10/80 - Friday One On The Road Again [2:43] ; It Must Have Been The Roses [5:33] ; Monkey And The Engineer [2:32] ; Jack-A-Roe [4:04] ; Dark Hollow [3:30] ; To Lay Me Down [8:38] ; Heaven Help The Fool [6:02] ; Bird Song [8:00] ; Ripple [2:25#] Two Mississippi Half-Step Uptown Toodeloo [7:31] > Franklin's Tower [8:29] ; Me And My Uncle [3:00] > Big River [5:22] ; Candyman [7:01] ;   You can listen to this week's Deadpod here:  http://traffic.libsyn.com/deadshow/deadpod100915.mp3   Thanks for supporting the Deadpod my friends! This week's second set from August 4th, 1976 clocks in at just over two hours of wonderful Grateful Dead music. From the first notes of Help on the Way through the Johnny B. Goode encore the band treats us to a very memorable experience. I'm personally fond of the amazing Dancin' In the Streets that comes out of Franklin's Tower, as well as the inspired jam in the Other One.. I hope you find as much to linger over here as I do.... This was quite a week in the Dead community, some fine Furthur shows, Phil's 71st birthday, but overshadowing everything, for me, was the loss of Augustus Owsley Stanley. Owsley was of course instrumental in the formation and development of the Grateful Dead, of the 'big sound' that really defined the concert experience for the Dead, and of course, as a world renowned chemist. This week, thanks to the efforts of Jamie over at Lossless Legs, I'm playing one of Bear's recordings, from the famous Winterland run of October 74. Fare thee well, Bear - give Jerry our love... This week's Deadpod results once more from a wonderful suggestion from one of our listeners - this one was for something from the Spring tour of 1983 - a great set of shows - and while this show isn't *exactly* one of the ones requested its one I quite enjoy.. it starts out with a thunderous Shakedown Street and the energy throughout is quite good. I really think you'll enjoy it! I'm surrounded by beautiful Fall foliage here in Michigan this time of year and it brought to mind this quite remarkable period of Dead shows. I will never forget when I saw the Dead open up sitting around and playing accoustic music. I loved those shows, and unfortunately there aren't a whole lot of soundboards of complete shows from that period that are out but this is one and I hope that you enjoy hearing it as much as I do.Yes the acoustic sets may not have as much variety as we'd like - but I really doubt that you can avoid having a smile as you listen to the boys chat between tunes or sing along as you listen to Ripple.. its a real pleasure for me and I hope you enjoy it as well..Grateful DeadRadio City Music Hall10/26/80 - SundayOne : Iko, Iko Dark Hollow, It Must Have Been The Roses, On The Road Again, Jack-A-Roe, Csasidy, China Doll -> Ripple ..Electric -1 :Jack Straw -> Sugaree, Little Red Rooster, Brown-Eyed WomenYou can listen to this week's Deadpod here:http://media.libsyn.com/media/deadshow/deadpod102309.mp3Be well and be kind to each other my friends..

This week's Deadpod goes back to the fabulous summer of 1974 - I think its clear from listening to this show that the band is really putting out some fabulous music. Not only is the show distinguished by an opening Scarlet Begonias, but I think you'll agree that the China-Rider and the Eyes are distinguished by their intensity and beauty.. Those of you who follow the Deadpod know that I often prefer to play lesser known performances rather than very well known ones. There's often lots of surprises there to be heard - but there's nothing wrong with bringing out the well-known and loved dates sometimes either. This week I'm playing one of the those - this one a live "free concert" from the "hiatus" of 1975 - Sept. 28th, 1975 from Golden Gate Park. The difficulty here was in choosing between the sources - a very good audience or the existing soundboard. I went with the soundboard but with some reservations. The energy and playing of this performance are over the top - I hope you enjoy it!! This week a new soundboard release of the first of the five "retirement" shows from the Winterland from October of 1974. These justly famous shows were of course immortalized on "The Grateful Dead Movie" but deserve to be enjoyed individually as much as possible. Phil's spectacular playing more than makes up for Donna's occasional off-key wailing ;).Grateful Dead Winterland Arena San Francisco, CA 10/16/74 - WednesdayMexicali Blues ; It Must Have Been The Roses ; Beat It On Down The Line ; Scarlet Begonias ; Me And Bobby McGee ; Tennessee Jed ; Cumberland Blues ; Playing In The BandThis segment is what exists in soundboard format of the first set. Happy Groundhog day! This week, an overlooked show that I think is quite fine.. from 1981, a very original setlist and some fine playing, I think you'll enjoy it.. It's also the start of our pledge drive on the radio station, so its time for me to ask you for your support for the podcast, and the radio show. If you'd see it in your heart (and budget) to make a donation to the show, I'd greatly appreciate it!
