Happy July 4th! This week's Deadpod takes place back on July 1, 1980 in San Diego California, where the Dead would play a very nice show at the Sports Arena. This week we will hear the 1st set, which opens with a great Jack Straw > Franklin's Tower combo. They only did this opening combo eight times, but I think its a great way to open a show. El Paso and Tennessee Jed folow, then another combo, Lazy Lightning into Supplication. A very nice Althea follows, with Jerry in good form. Then Bobby finishes this first set with another combo, Lost Sailor into Saint of Circumstance, Grateful Dead San Diego International Sports Arena San Diego, CA 7/1/80 - Tuesday One Jack Straw [6:07] > Franklin's Tower [13:31] > El Paso [4:30] ; Tennessee Jed [8:58] ; Lazy Lightnin' [3:25] > Supplication [5:56] ; Althea[9:12] > Lost Sailor [6:13] > Saint Of Circumstance [6:19] You can listen to this week's Deadpod here: http://traffic.libsyn.com/deadshow/deadpod070320.mp3 I hope you have a safe and happy holiday weekend. In what is surely the strangest summer ever, may you stay well and be kind to each other. thank you so much for your kind support
This week we continue listening to the band's performance at the Tower Theater in Philadelphia PA on June 24, 1976 with a somewhat short, but quite sweet, second set. As with many great second sets, this one starts with a fine 'Help>Slip>Frank' containing an exceptional 'Slipknot!' . This fine recording, which has been available as a soundboard and an FM long before the first set, continues with a smoking 'Samson and Delilah', then a beautiful 'Wharf Rat', certainly one of the best of the year. A nice jam out of Wharf Rat then goes into an exceptional 'Dancin' In the Streets'. No Drums or Space on this set, they close with a very nice 'Sugar Magnolia'. No encore at this one.. Grateful Dead Tower Theatre Upper Darby, PA 6/24/76 - Thursday Two Help On The Way [4:10] > Slipknot! Hey Now! Here's a great second set for your pee-Thanksgiving preparations.. from 11/2/84 at the Berkeley Community Theater, this was probably the highlight of the run, as the band turns in a solid performance highlighted by some great Garcia licks, some amazing Phil sounds and some excellent work from Bobby and Brent. The 'Help>Slip>Frank' is as always, a great opener, and the band revs it up during the jam in Slipknot! Bobby does a fine 'Sailor>Saint' here, and Brent adds a great deal of depth to Bobby's finale during 'Sailor'. Listen as well to Phil during that Saint for an example of his unmatched abilities. They move into a strong 'Wharf Rat' in the pre-drums slot then break out 'Gimme Some Lovin' for the fist time. They finish the Playin' in the Band they started on 10/28, then finish with strong versions of 'Bertha>Good Lovin'. They return for the last 'Casey Jones' until 1992.. Grateful Dead Berkeley Community Theater Berkeley, CA 11/2/84 - Friday Two Help On The Way [3:07]> Slipknot! [7:30}> Franklin's Tower [11:43] ; Lost Sailor [7:00]> Saint Of Circumstance [6:43] ; Wharf Rat [11:01]> Space [0:29]> Gimme Some Lovin' [5:17]> Drums> Space [10:41]> Playing In the Band Reprise [7:45]> Bertha [6:37]> Good Lovin' [7:52] Encore Casey Jones [5:19] You can listen to this week's Deadpod here: http://traffic.libsyn.com/deadshow/deadpod112219.mp3 Be sure and pick us up Thanksgiving morning for a special holiday edition of the Deadpod! This week's Deadpod features the band's performance at the Rainbow Theater in London England on Saturday October 3rd, 1981. This second set contains some wonderful improvisational music and both a fabulous pre-drums setlist and a spectacular Morning Dew. I think you'll agree that the music here flows beyond the structure of these songs to explore some unexpected places before settling back into familiar terrain. There's some great sound in Drums and Space as well. Grateful Dead Rainbow Theatre London, England 10/3/81 - Saturday Two Feel Like A Stranger [8:47] > Franklin's Tower [11:23] > Estimated Prophet [13:23] > Terrapin Station [10:54#] > Drums > Space [6:54] > Not Fade Away [8:05] > Morning Dew [11:17] > Around And Around [3:54] > One More Saturday Night [4:24] Encore Brokedown Palace [5:27] http://traffic.libsyn.com/deadshow/deadpod101119.mp3 Your support of the Deadpod is greatly appreciated! Happy Labor Day weekend! This week's Deadpod takes us to New York state, up to Rochester, where the Dead played a fine outdoor show during the day of September 1st, 1979. The first set which we will hear this week, breaks from the gate with a fine 'Mississippi Half-Step' > 'Franklin's Tower' combination. This is for me the highlight of this set, almost 20 minutes long. The rest of the first set is fine, high-energy Dead, culminating in only the 2nd time that Bobby sang the 'Lost Sailor'>'Saint of Circumstance' combo.. since this is only the 2nd time he performed 'Saint' check out the crazy lyrics! Fun! Grateful Dead Holleder Stadium Rochester, NY 9/1/79 - Saturday One Mississippi Half-Step Uptown Toodeloo [9:56] > Franklin's Tower [10:22] ; Me And My Uncle [3:08]> Big River [5:32] ; Friend Of The Devil [9:02] ; Looks Like Rain [7:26] ; Don't Ease Me In [3:21] ; Lost Sailor [6:35]> Saint Of Circumstance [6:29] You can listen to this week's Deadpod here: http://traffic.libsyn.com/deadshow/deadpod083019.mp3 Hoping you have a blast this weekend, as we once again bid adieu to Summer !
Here's a pretty little set to send out the month of May in style.. This one comes to us form May 17th, 1978 at the Uptown theater in Chicago Illinois. This one starts with the first ever 'Mississipi-Half Step'>'Franklin's Tower' combo, and one that showcases some really nice licks from Mr. Garcia (and I should add some very nice work from Mr. Weir as well). The next two are Bobby's - 'Me and My Uncle' into a tight 'Big River'. Lovely versions of 'It Must Have Been The Roses' and 'Looks like Rain' showcase the more laid back side of the Dead as well as what Donna Jean could add in terms of backing vocals. A rolling "Tennessee Jed' follows, with Keith adding some nice color and Jerry adding some spirited vocals to make for a real good time. Bobby encourages the crowd to wish Mickey and Billy a Happy Birthday.... then they play a full on Funiculi Funicula... They close with a nice 'Lazy Lightnin'>Supplication'... Grateful Dead Uptown Theatre Chicago, IL 5/17/78 - Wednesday One Mississippi Half-Step Uptown Toodeloo [9:24]> Franklin's Tower [14:19] ; Me And My Uncle [3:04] > Big River [5:44] ; It Must Have Been The Roses [6:53] ; Looks Like Rain [9:05] ; Tennessee Jed [8:57] ; Funiculi Funicula [1:25] ; Lazy Lightnin' [3:20] > Supplication [6:38] You can listen to this week's Deadpod here: http://traffic.libsyn.com/deadshow/deadpod053119.mp3 As always, I want to acknowledge and thank the kind folks whose support makes the Deadpod possible.. Thank You!
This week's Memorial Day weekend Deadpod features the second set from the band's performance at Shoreline Amphitheater on May 12th, 1991. I'm a sucker for a Help>Slip>Frank opening and I quite enjoy this one. There are plenty of Phil bombs here and Bruce Hornsby's presence is heard here as well. Jerry is quite present throughout this set and is in relatively great voice. For a post-Brent show I think this one is quite good, and the Weight encore was a favorite of mine in this era. I hope you enjoy.. Grateful Dead Shoreline Amphitheater Mountain View, CA 5/12/91 - Sunday Two Help On The Way > Slipknot! > Franklin's Tower ; Looks Like Rain ; Terrapin Station > Drums > Space > Goin' Down The Road Feeling Bad > Throwing Stones ; Turn On Your Love Light Encore The Weight you can listen to this week's Deadpod here: http://traffic.libsyn.com/deadshow/deadpod052419.mp3 Be sure to join us on our Facebook group.. and you can listen to the Deadpod on Spotify as well. I always love to feature a show from the historic September 1990 run at Madison Square Garden in New York City. This week I decided to bring you this wonderful show from Wednesday, September 19th 1990. This first set is energetic, and played wonderfully. Of course, the band was finding itself anew after losing Brent, and Bruce Hornsby's fourth show as a member of the band, bringing a new vitality to the group. A great 'Jack Straw' starts thing soff, but don't overlook the energy on 'Big River'. What could be better than a set closing 'Help'>'Slip'>'Frank'? Second set next week.. Grateful Dead Madison Square Garden New York , NY 9/19/90 - Wednesday One - [1:06:04] Jack Straw [5:58] ; Bertha [6:55] ; Me And My Uncle [3:09] > Big River [6:01] ; It Must Have Been The Roses [5:15] ; Stuck Inside Of Mobile With The Memphis Blues Again [8:31] ; Help On The Way [4:16] > Slipknot! Have a great week - my thoughts are with those of you down around the Carolinas and Georgia! Be Safe.

We open the month of May here on the Deadpod with a great second set from 1977, as we continue our presentation of April 23rd, 1977 at the Springfield Civic Center Arena in Springfield MA. This set starts with the famous 'take a step back' exhortation to the crowd, but the band fires things up most excellently with a very tight 'Estimated Prophet'. Not only are the harmonies great here but Jerry has that twangy 77 sound that makes this one so sweet. Bertha follows, more melodic than rockin' here.. The familiar bass line of 'The Music Never Stops' follows, as the band high step into this favorite. Jerry really gets cranking here, even though the jam won't go on as long as we might like. The Help>Slip>Frank that follows is for my money clearly the highlight here. Such a joy to listen to.. I find myself wishing that Slipknot! could go on and on.. but then I'd miss Jerry's mindbending solos during Franklin's :) They close the second set with a great trifecta; 'Around and Around'>'Goin' Down the Road Feelin' Bad'>'Not Fade Away'. Nothin' left to do.. :) Grateful Dead Springfield Civic Center Arena Springfield, MA 4/23/77 - Saturday Two Estimated Prophet [7:34] ; Bertha [7:03] ; The Music Never Stopped [5:59] ; Help On The Way [4:25] > Slipknot! [8:53] > Franklin's Tower [10:24] > Around And Around [6:49] > Goin' Down The Road Feeling Bad [8:49] > Not Fade Away [11:14] Encore One More Saturday Night [4:40] you can listen to this week's Deadpod here: http://traffic.libsyn.com/deadshow/deadpod050418.mp3 Thank you for your kind support of the Deadpod!
This week I've decided to bring you the first set of what might very well be the band's most historic Halloween show - 10/31/91 in Oakland. The run was historic because it occurred the week of the passing of Bill Graham in a tragic helicopter crash. A great friend of the Dead, Bill's passing was marked in the second set of this show during a eulogy from Ken Kesey, which we'll hear next week. This first set however is definitely worth hearing and should provide a great warm up to your Halloween weekend! It starts off with a great Help->Slip->Frank, with Phil out front and driving the train. The Slipknot is a beautiful ensemble effort, especially Vince and Bruce's contributions to the overall structure. It floats along beautifully, then, just as it reaches its apex, we're plunged into that great bouncy Franklin's Tower. Jerry's leads here are crystalline, soaring.. Jerry's voice contains just enough world weariness to make me feel the wisdom here. While 'Little Red Rooster' wouldn't have been my choice to follow this up with, it is one of their better versions, with some nice slide work. 'Loser' follows, it takes a bit to get warmed up, but Garcia builds it up slowly into a great crescendo. Phil follows with a great version of 'Just Like Tom Thumb's Blues', a song they would only break out 4 or 5 times a year. A long 'Let It Grow' closes the set, an interesting if not completely enrapturing performance of this piece.... Grateful Dead Oakland-Alameda County Coliseum Arena Oakland, CA 10/31/91 - Thursday One Help On The Way > Slipknot! > Franklin's Tower ; Little Red Rooster ; Loser ; Just Like Tom Thumb's Blues ; Let It Grow You can listen to this week's Deadpod here: http://traffic.libsyn.com/deadshow/deadpod102717.mp3 For those of you looking for the 2nd set from October 19, 1971, you can find it here: http://traffic.libsyn.com/deadshow/deadpod070811.mp3 My apologies for repeating the first set last week.. Have a safe and happy Halloween!! As always, my sincere thanks for your support, my friends.
This week's Deadpod opens with a classic combo the band did justice to as they opened the second set on August 22nd, 1993 at Autzen Stadium in Eugene, Oregon. This Help->Slip->Frank is, and always was, a wonderful way to open a set, and I hope, a great way to open your Labor Day weekend. The jam into Slipknot is particularly tasty. They follow with a rockin' Samson (it was Sunday after all). Corrina makes a rare but welcome appearance on the Deadpod going into Drums and Space.. The post-drums highlight of course is 'Days Between', one of those latter day ballads that are so powerful in the last few years. Not Fade Away is an excellent way to close the set, and they come back with a joyful 'Liberty' encore. Grateful Dead Autzen Stadium - University of Oregon Eugene, OR Two Help On The Way > Slipknot! > Franklin's Tower ; Samson And Delilah ; Ship Of Fools ; Corrina > Drums > Space > The Wheel > I Need A Miracle > Days Between > Not Fade Away Encore: Liberty You can listen to this week's Deadpod here: http://traffic.libsyn.com/deadshow/deadpod090117.mp3 Have a safe and happy Labor Day! They start with a trifecta that really takes off and was only done on two other occasions, the Mississippi Half-Step->Franklin's Tower->Minglewood. Personally I always enjoyed when Franklin's found its way into unusual combinations, and the Minglewood here is really rockin' as well. Other highlights in this fine first set include an excellent Althea, and an extended jam in the (unsual) set closing 'Feel Like a Stranger'. Next week's set 2 is at least equally as fine. This week's Deadpod features the second set from the band's performance at a Rex Foundation benefit on April 1st, 1984. There's lots of Garcia to love here, from the Help->Slip-Frank, through Terrapin and Morning Dew.. We even have a Touch of Grey encore.. really this one is a 'greatest hits' set list, and I hope you enjoy it as much as I have.. As March blows in we go back in this week's Deadpod to the spring of 1981, and one of the fine shows from the band's run at Madison Square Garden. Last year we played the previous evening's show, but this performance from March 10, 1981 deserves a spot on our favorites as well. The show beings with a Mississippi Half-Step that starts off great, then a shocking bit of feedback/reverb blows through the sound system - the band simply plays through it like the pros they are, but don't let it throw you off, this is a great version! This flows into a fine, stand alone version of Franklin's Tower. I always enjoy these, and this one is no slouch. Me and My Uncle follows with Weir joking that the earlier feedback was all planned. They slow it up a little with 'Roses'. Don't Easy Me In occupies a rare mid-set position, and there is some nice improvisation in the Lazy Lightnin'->Supplication transition. A strong first set that I hope puts you in a fine space as we roll into early March! This week's Deadpod features the second set from October 15th, 1976 at the Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles, CA. I think this set has several very interesting moments. The first is the fine transition from the opening 'Eyes of the World' to 'The Music Never Stopped'. This was a the only time they ever played these two in this order, but I wonder why when listening to this performance. A long He's Gone leads into a short drums but then a mighty 'Other One'. The 'Comes A Time' that follows is one of the best, and probably the highlight of the set. A great 'Franklin's Tower->Sugar Magnolia' which closes the set is marred a bit by the fact that we only have the audience tape here. I hope you enjoy this performance from the Fall of 1976.. Grateful Dead Shrine Auditorium Los Angeles, CA 10/15/76 - Friday Two Eyes Of The World [10:05] > The Music Never Stopped [5:54] ; It Must Have Been The Roses [6:26] % Samson And Delilah [6:40] % He's Gone [14:30] > Drums [5:12] > The Other One [13:27] > Comes A Time [10:08] > Franklin's Tower [12:22] > Sugar Magnolia [8:24] You can listen to this week's Deadpod here: http://traffic.libsyn.com/deadshow/deadpod102116.mp3 My thanks for your support of the Deadpod.

I am certain that you'll enjoy this second set from the Dead's performance back on November 29th, 1980 in Gaineville, Florida. I found this a delight to listen to ,especially the transitions between songs.. those jams are full of life and fire! They start with a great Shakedown Street, which flows nicely into a Franklin's Tower. The Estimated that follows is Soooooo good, in my opinion.. and not only do they not go into Eyes, they go into an interesting He's Gone.. I think you'll find plenty creative here in the pre-drums . and the space and drums is very interesting.. the Stella Blue that follows the Other One is very powerful.. You'll enjoy the Good Lovin' and Casey Jones which ends this one.. Grateful Dead Alligator Alley Gym - University of Florida Gainesville, FL 11/29/80 - Saturday Two Shakedown Street [10:18] > Franklin's Tower [8:07] ; Estimated Prophet [10:41] > He's Gone [12:50] > Truckin' [9:03] > Drums [5:#38] > Space [4:51]> The Other One [7:03] > Stella Blue [10:23] > Good Lovin' [8:17] Encore Casey Jones [5:41] You can listen to this week's Deadpod here: http://traffic.libsyn.com/deadshow/deadpod121815.mp3 As we watch this year slide away, just wanted to thank those kind folks who have supported the Deadpod this year - I really appreciate it! I wish you and yours and most happy and healthy Holiday Season!
This week's Deadpod features another great request from one of my listeners, this time for the Dead's performance on November 2nd, 1979 at the Nassau Coliseum in Uniondale N.Y. The first set starts with an amazing sequence of Mississippi Half-Step into a wonderful Franklin's Tower, marred just a bit by the fact that the first 2 minutes of the Half-Step are missing from the soundboard tape. I just love Garcia as he across the Rio Grandio.. :) These two songs along go on for a half hour! What a great opening to this show. The rest of the first set, while somewhat predictable by late 70s standards is pleasing and well-played including a very nice Lazy Lightning->Supplication by Bob and a set closing Deal. I'll play set 2 next week. Grateful Dead Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum Uniondale, NY 11/2/79 - Friday One Mississippi Half-Step Uptown Toodeloo [10:36] > Franklin's Tower [17:45] ; El Paso [4:10] > Mexicali Blues [4:05] ; Tennessee Jed [8:31] ; Lazy Lightnin' [3:19] > Supplication [4:39] ; Deal [5:22] You can listen to this week's Deadpod here: http://traffic.libsyn.com/deadshow/deadpod103015.mp3 A big thank you to the folks who have been able to support the Deadpod! You're the reason we can publish every week!! Have a safe and happy Halloween!!
It is only fitting that we go back to the famous 'acoustic' shows of 1980 for this week's Deadpod. This was a request from one of my wonderful listeners for a show that not only features the famous acoustic first set, but outstanding electric sets 2 and 3. The first set is a treat for everyone who enjoys the acoustic Dead, and while I do like to feature this genre around the holidays, the arrival of Fall is reason enough to revisit this wonderful music. Since the acoustic set was not quite as long as I prefer for a Deadpod, I've also included the first part of the electric set 2, including a fine Mississippi Half-Step ->Franklin's Tower.. I know I've featured a number of sets from 1980 this year, and I hope you enjoy this one just as much as those others.. Grateful Dead Warfield Theatre San Francisco, CA 10/10/80 - Friday One On The Road Again [2:43] ; It Must Have Been The Roses [5:33] ; Monkey And The Engineer [2:32] ; Jack-A-Roe [4:04] ; Dark Hollow [3:30] ; To Lay Me Down [8:38] ; Heaven Help The Fool [6:02] ; Bird Song [8:00] ; Ripple [2:25#] Two Mississippi Half-Step Uptown Toodeloo [7:31] > Franklin's Tower [8:29] ; Me And My Uncle [3:00] > Big River [5:22] ; Candyman [7:01] ; You can listen to this week's Deadpod here: http://traffic.libsyn.com/deadshow/deadpod100915.mp3 Thanks for supporting the Deadpod my friends! I couldn't do it without you.. Remember to let me know your requests.. and always always try to Be Kind!
As I sat outside on my porch last night at 9:30 PM, noticing that it was still light, I thought that it might be time to bring you a show from the land of the midnight sun, Alaska. This week I'm playing a great show from the Dead's only visit to our largest state, back in 1980. This is from the middle of a three night run in a high school auditorium, on June 20th, 1980. I think you'll agree this is a particularly fine first set, starting out with a nice Jack Straw going into a great and bouncing, Franklin's Tower. The Mana Tried->Mexicali duo is well played and full of spunk as well. Weir infused the Let it Grow with just the right imagery and the Althea that follows is a treat to hear. The boys don't stop there, however, as they might on a lesser day, but go on to add four more ditties to this first set including a fine Deal to close it. I think you'll enjoy this first set if you aren't already a fan, and if you are, hopefully you'll enjoy revisiting this fine show from 35 years ago. Grateful Dead West High Auditorium, Ankorage, AK 6/20/80 SET ONE: Tuning Jack Straw > Franklin's Tower > Mama Tried > Mexicali Blues Friend of the Devil Let It Grow > Althea Tuning Easy To Love You Tuning Lost Sailor > Saint of Circumstance > Deal You can listen to this week's Deadpod here: http://traffic.libsyn.com/deadshow/deadpod061215.mp3 Thank you for your kind support which makes the Deadpod possible. have a great week my friends!
While I wouldn't say this second set was overshadowed by the first, it is one of the rare second sets that is shorter than its first set..the band however does not let up on the jamming as this second set is a true pleasure to relive. They come out of the box hot and fast with an excellent Eyes of the World, played in the uptempo fashion.. despite the furious pace there are plenty of beautiful Garcia licks sure to get you moving. Eyes then moves into an unusual but interesting short space that leads into the fabulously funky 'Dancin' In the Streets'.. again here, Garcia and Lesh in particulary provide plenty of interesting leads and take their time exploring the beat. They transition nicely into the unmistakable entrance to 'Wharf Rat'. In contrast to the frenzied pace of Eyes, this Wharf Rat is quite languid, building the drama in the music along with the tragic story - always one of my favorites.. . the transition into Franklin's Tower is a bit abrupt but the standalong Franklin's is a rare treat. Garcia here is really playing his guitar like ringing a bell.. :) As with every song in this set they take their time and develop the melody - in this case almost 14 minutes of delightful playing. The close with a rockin', delightful, Sugar Magnolia... Then they return with, surprise (since it is Saturday - 'One More Saturday Night', but indicating I think how much fun they had, a double encore of a nice 'Uncle John's Band'.. man I can only imagine how happy the fans went home after this one! As far as I know, this was the Dead's only performance in Spain, and while I recall wearing this tape out at one time I hadn't thought about it for some time, until I came across it again searching for a show for this week's 'pod. I'm thrilled to have rediscovered it. There's plenty of energy here as the band, and Garcia, seem pumped for the end of this European tour. This set starts off plenty hot with Jack Straw leading into a sparkling Franklin's Tower. Even the cowboy tunes shine from Garcia's treatment. Loser then goes into a jamming CC Rider with Weir giving some great vocals. The Passenger features some great Phil bombs throughout. Who doesn't like Althea and Jerry shreds on this one.. The Let it Grow is phenomenal, and one of the best of the year for sure.. and we've just finished set 1, set 2 is even better.. next week.. I think you'll really enjoy this second set from 1982... I don't know exactly what the boys were into (judging from the Raven space there must've been some tanks backstage :) but I find the entire set to be very up tempo and well played. Garcia is in fine form throughout and particularly enjoy the stand alone, bluegrass tinged Franklin's Tower. Estimated is arranged quite uniquely as well, and a strong Terrapin leads into Phil's famous Raven Space.. Post-drums doesn't disappoint either, as a fine Wheel and Truckin' lead into a very soulful Stella Blue - I can never hear that one enough and this is a real tear jerker.. They close with two strong Weir rocker's and come back to cap off the night with a Brokedown encore.. Ah.. to be on tour again in the Spring... at least we can in our minds as we listen to this week's Deadpod.. Happy New Year! Well close enough ;) that said I decided to bring out one of the band's famous NYE performances for this week's (and next week's) Deadpod. This is from 12/31/79 at the Oakland Auditorium Arena in Oakland CA. While many would argue that this was not the best show of this NYE run (after all 12/28/79 was released as Road Trips Vol 3 #1, and 12/26/79 was Dick's Picks #5) there is still something magical about these NYE performances. This week we will listen to set 1, then sets 2 and 3 next week. Set one starts off strong with a great Jack Straw (listen to what sounds like the reference to Clive Davis of Arista Records in the "We used to sing for silver.. line :) Jack Straw flows into a big Franklin's Tower, albeit Jerry blows more than one lyric here.. Other highlights in this first set include a very nice 'Looks like Rain' and a rockin' Promised Land which closes out set 1... This week's show was the result of a request made over on the Deadpod's facebook page for a great version of Brent doing 'We Can Run'.. While this may not be the very best version of that song its plenty good.. and it is a part of a pretty good show from a great Fall tour. Highlights for me on this first set include the off-tempo Franklin's Tower, and a great Bird Song and Promised Land.. Set 2 follows next week, with a foreshadowing of the Hampton shows that came later in this tour.. This is a fine second set from the Fall of 1976 - enjoy this one along with the fine Fall weather.. I especially recommend that you savor the wonderful Slipknot.. as well as the Franklin's Tower that follows.. this is really an under appreciated gem. The Dancin'->Drums->Wheel->Ship is not only unusual but very nicely done, especially the Ship of Fool.. this one makes a truly wierd but wonderful transition back into the Dancin' reprise.. There's no point in describing the GDTRFB.. listen to it.. You'll love the rockin' end to this show.. There were quite a few outstanding shows that took place in early Spring throughout the history of the GD, so picking one for this week's show wasn't that easy. I think this is however a good show from an outstanding tour, Spring of 1987. The band roars out of the gate on Jack Straw, then goes into an outstanding Franklin's Tower, in honor of Philadelphia I presume.. The first set is full of sparkling playing and high energy. I'm personally fond of the Candyman, however, in the more soulful vein..I'm even willing to give them a pass on the perfunctory 'Don't Ease' which closes the set... the second set next week is very good as well.. The sound quality is not pristine but quite listenable, I think. I hope you enjoy it, and that your Spring is busting out all over too. 3/31/87 - Grateful Dead The Spectrum - Philadelphia, PA Set One:Jack Straw ->Franklin's Tower C C RiderRamble On RoseTons Of SteelMama Tried ->Big RiverCandymanDesolation Row ->Don't Ease Me In You can listen to this week's Deadpod http://traffic.libsyn.com/deadshow/deadpod033012.mp3">here:http://traffic.libsyn.com/deadshow/deadpod033012.mp3">http://traffic.libsyn.com/deadshow/deadpod033012.mp3 The Deadpod exists only through your support.. thank you my friends..... I've had a fair number of requests for 90's Dead shows recently, and this week's shows features one of the best shows that took place back in 1993. This one is a favorite not only because the second set features an appearance by Ken Nordine, but also because I really enjoy Jerry's playing and the rest of the band puts in a solid performance. This starts with a tight Help->Slip into a nice long Franklin's Tower. Althea is always a favorite, and the Masterpiece as well as So Many Roads is quite enjoyable. This week we get to listen to the second set from this fine show that took place at the Greek back in 1984. I think you'll find that while the Help->Slip->Frank isn't remarkable, the Estimated->Eyes->Drumz is more than worthwhile. I also really like Jerry's work in Truckin', and the Wharf Rat is a keeper for sure. Grateful DeadGreek Theatre - University of CaliforniaBerkeley, CA Set Two: Help On The Way [3:52] > Slipknot! This week's second set from August 4th, 1976 clocks in at just over two hours of wonderful Grateful Dead music. From the first notes of Help on the Way through the Johnny B. Goode encore the band treats us to a very memorable experience. I'm personally fond of the amazing Dancin' In the Streets that comes out of Franklin's Tower, as well as the inspired jam in the Other One.. I hope you find as much to linger over here as I do.... This week we have the first part of the second set of this very well played show from the spring tour of 1983 - this set starts with a fabulous Help->Slip->Frank.. I really love the slipknot here and recommend that you give it a good listen... This week's Deadpod is big in every way - a wonderful second set that features a fabulous Eyes of the World->Estimated Prophet->Franklin's Tower that lasts nearly an hour and is among the best versions ever of these songs. This comes to us from the great fall of 79 tour, this one is from November 5th, 1979 from the Spectrum in Philadelphia. The entire set is a real treat, starting with a rare second set opening Althea and closing with a truly rocking Sailor-Saint-Sugar Magnolia.. Being just another picky deadhead myself, I'm very concerned to have the music sound as good as possible - please let me know if you notice the difference on this week's Deadpod. This does increase the file size, and there are tradeoffs, but it may well be worth the cost. The other big news this week is that starting next week, KOPN, 89.5 FM, Community radio begins its Fall pledge drive. I'm trying to get a head start on this by asking you for your support for the Deadpod. I do hope you'll consider contributing to the Deadpod and ensuring our continuance. I wanted to let you know this was starting this week because I have an opportunity to send you a very special thank you for supporting the Deadpod - a copy of the brand new release "Rocking the Cradle - Egypt 78" CD/DVD combination set that releases on September 30th! This two cd/dvd set chronicles the historic shows in Egypt in 1978 - including 95 minutes of concert footage - and I'm so happy to be able to offer this to my listeners who contribute at a $60 level or above. I wanted to get a headstart on this as I'm going to be getting some surgery done later in October and would like to take care of this before all that goes down.. so at any rate, if you'd like to get a copy of this wonderful set, just contribute to the Deadpod during this big membership drive. You can click the 'Make a Donation' button on the left hand side of the page here: http://deadshow.blogspot.comThank YOU! Whew! I hope the Deadpod and all the news isn't TOO big! but then again, I always loved the BIG sound of seeing the Dead and I think you'll enjoy this week's show.. Be well and thanks for picking us up!
Those of you who follow the Deadpod know that I often prefer to play lesser known performances rather than very well known ones. There's often lots of surprises there to be heard - but there's nothing wrong with bringing out the well-known and loved dates sometimes either. This week I'm playing one of the those - this one a live "free concert" from the "hiatus" of 1975 - Sept. 28th, 1975 from Golden Gate Park. The difficulty here was in choosing between the sources - a very good audience or the existing soundboard. I went with the soundboard but with some reservations. The energy and playing of this performance are over the top - I hope you enjoy it!! This week we get to listen to the second set of the Dead's performance on 10/20/78 at Winterland in San Francisco. I don't think there's really any throw-away tunes in this set - from the opening Half-Step->Franklins, to the exploratory(!) Dancin' In the Streets this is really classic, Good 'ol Grateful Dead. The double encore, Johnny B Goode and Shakedown Street, just puts the band's own exclamation mark on this performance.. Enjoy. This week I have an excellent show from 1989 for your listening pleasure - we'll be hearing the first part of August 6th, 1989 from Cal Expo. The show starts with a 'Let the Good Times Roll' that the band ends perfectly and rolls into 'Feel Like a Stranger' and then Franklin's Tower.. A very interesting and well played start to a wonderful show. I really enjoy this first part of the show - highlighted by Garcia's singing on Ramble on Rose and a great version of Birdsong. This week I'm trying something crazy - this week's Deadpod is an entire, complete show from 1976. This is a *huge* file folks, and I hope that you are all able to listen to this and enjoy this really unique show. I'm doing this as a favor to one of the friends of the Deadpod who is running in this weekend's NYC Marathon, and hoped to get to hear a complete show. I've also had requests for a mid-70s show and a 'help->slip->Franklin's'.. well this show has an epic Franklin's so I really hope that all of you have the time and bandwidth to hear it all.. Thanks for your understanding and we'll see how this one goes - I couldn't possibly post something this large every week, but what the hell, let's see how it goes!!
