Broken Record with Rick Rubin, Malcolm Gladwell, Bruce Headlam and Justin Richmond

Beach House is a psych-pop band with a die-hard cult following. Since their 2006 debut album, their lush, cinematic sound has been sampled by artists like Kendrick Lamar and The Weeknd. And Kanye recently posted a picture on Instagram collaborating with Beach House in the studio.  In January, Beach House began releasing their most ambitious project yet—a double album that debuted at number one. It's called Once, Twice, Melody and it's their first entirely self-produced album and the most dynamic in scope. On today's episode Broken Record producer Leah Rose talks to Victoria Legrand and Alex Scally of Beach House about the inner-workings of their unique creative partnership. They also talk about how the warmth of Bob Marley's music has indirectly inspired the band, and they explain why sometimes you have to just get over yourself for the sake of show business.  Subscribe to Broken Record's YouTube channel to hear all of our interviews:  https://www.youtube.com/brokenrecordpodcast and follow us on Twitter @BrokenRecord You can also check out past episodes here: https://brokenrecordpodcast.com Hear a playlist of all of our favorite Beach House songs HERE. "Beach House" are a dream-pop duo formed in 2004 by singer/keyboardist Victoria Legrand and guitarist/keyboardist Alex Scally. The duo came together over a mutual interest in similar musical tastes, with influences ranging from Neil Young to Brian Wilson of The Beach Boys. At the time Victoria was already in a band and recruited Alex to play bass, but the project became frustrating for Victoria since it wasn't going anywhere. It wasn't long before Alex suggested that the pair split from the band and do their own thing. They started writing songs and despite not specifically trying to achieve a "dream-pop" sound, it was a genre that could easily be labelled on the music they were writing together. Their first self-titled 2006 release was the result of just 2 days of recording on a 4 track recorder in Alex's basement studio.Since those early days the duo have gone on to put out 7 studio albums and tour the world.Join Jay and Jesse as they explore the sonic world of "Beach House"."Roots to Grooves" is a production of SIGNL.https://www.signlradio.comhttps://www.instagram.com/signlradiohttps://www.twitter.com/signlradiohttps://www.facebook.com/signlradiohttps://www.mixcloud.com/signlhttps://open.spotify.com/user/96mhz6qfjoztxbl2dpm0uj903?si=aAZpsoEnRAKdx85kr1QWhg

Beach House Once - "Twice Melody" from the 2022 album Once Twice Melody on Sub Pop. As longtime fans and champions of Baltimore-based band Beach House, the excitement over the dream pop duo's partially-released double LP Once Twice Melody is feverish, to say the least. With two of the four chapters already released, it's clear to see Victoria Legrand and Alex Scally have a masterpiece on their hands with their eighth studio record. Our Song of the Day is the album's title track and the lead single off the album. As also the opening track, “Once Twice Melody” sets the dreamy, cinematic mood that Beach House has made their signature over the past 18(?!) years. For the first time, a live string ensemble is brought in to back the sparkling synths and arpeggiated guitar strums, adding lush texture and drama. Legrand's lyrics are similarly illusory, telling the story of a girl who lives in her head - preferring romantic daydreams over the dull realities of life. The third chapter of Once Twice Melody is out this Wednesday, January 19th. The full release is Friday, February 18th with an option of a Limited “GOLD” Edition 2xLP in a gold-embossed, hinged box on gold and clear vinyl with full-color booklet and 2 exclusive posters if you want to go all in. Beach House is (hopefully, depending on Covid) heading out on tour this February, with a date in Seattle on Sunday, April 3rd at the Paramount. After signing to Sub Pop, Alex Scally and Victoria Legrand decided it was time to take Beach House's lo-fi signature sound and make everything "bigger". They kept the core ingredients (jangly guitars, organ drones, and Victoria's distinct low, Nico=esque vocals), but added more approachable, hooks and more pop-leaning choruses. You could say they put the "pop" in dream pop more so than any of their predecessors, garnering mainstream success. The band is now synonymous with the genre, and helped to define and shape it for the next generation.Tracklist: Silver Soul Used To Be (single version 2008) Used To Be (Teen Dream version) 10 Mile Stereo Take Care Grizzly Bear feat. Victoria Legrand, on writing music for Beach House: “It’s like something magical happening. And I believe in that, there’s love, but it’s not just love between us, it’s the whole universe around us and all the things we’ve been reading about the stars and the movies we’ve seen and the pain I’ve felt from talking to people about their loss. It all sucks down into this one moment of pure reaction. I’ve always said music is very personal to [bandmate] Alex [Scally] and I, but it’s not just that I got my heart broken by this guy or girl, it’s I got my heart broken by the whole world. Or all the things I ever heard about somebody’s heartbreak, it’s in me somehow. It’s like this stain and it’s coming out because I hear these tones and these chords and these notes and they make me feel like crying or they make me completely euphoric. That’s the thing that hasn’t changed, but I think it’s become amplified. And that is why I don’t think we’re done making records. Because if that ever stopped, if that really innocent reaction, where all of the angst and all of the sorrow and beauty didn’t just get triggered into something beautiful or something that takes us out of the news or the car-crash, then we would stop, I always said that. But it’s not stopping.” --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/jennylsq/support

Beach House is considered one of the quintessential "dream pop" bands of all time. Victoria Legrand and Alex Scally seem to have perfected a sound that is ominous yet uplifting, spooky yet sweet, enchanting..and yet strange at the same time. They also happen to be one of Scott and Macie's favorite bands! So of course this merits a conversation about what makes Beach House so special! We hope you enjoy!

During a stop at FUV, they performed some live tunes and told host Alisa Ali about how making an album is a lot like shopping for a chair.
