"Unknown Mortal Orchestra" is the musical project from singer, guitarist and songwriter Ruban Nielson.Ruban was born in Darwin Australia, but moved to New Zealand when he was a child. His first artistic inclinations were towards illustration, being influenced by comic books ranging from Spiderman to Spawn. Despite having parents that were heavily into music, it wasn't until Ruban turned 19 that he finally decided to learn the guitar. He formed a band with his brother called "The Mint Chicks" and eventually went on tour, supporting well known artists, such as The White Stripes. It would be a decade later, after moving with his family to Portland Oregon, that Ruban would eventually create the "Unknown Mortal Orchestra" moniker. A project spawned from working away in his basement home recording studio, and leading to a surprising turn of events that would land him a record deal. This is a fascinating story, and probably one of our longest episodes so far. We hope you enjoy the conversation."Roots to Grooves" is a production of SIGNL.https://www.signlradio.comhttps://www.instagram.com/signlradiohttps://www.twitter.com/signlradiohttps://www.facebook.com/signlradiohttps://www.mixcloud.com/signlhttps://open.spotify.com/user/96mhz6qfjoztxbl2dpm0uj903?si=aAZpsoEnRAKdx85kr1QWhg

Leon Michels grew up in New York, picking up the Saxophone while he was in high school. His teachers introduced him to early jazz from artists such as Benny Goodman and Duke Ellington. It was his encounter with the musicians that would go on to form "Budos Band" that introduced him to the world of deep funk and afrobeat, and from there Leon would go on to experiment with his own recordings, initially on a multitrack reel-to-reel recorder a friend had gifted him, and eventually to putting out his own music under the "El Michels Affair" moniker.Leon's career has also seen him work on projects for high profile artists such as "Lana Del Rey" and being sampled by producers working with "Beyonce".On this episode Jay and Jesse dive deeper into Leon's back catalogue as well as his approach and workflow to making music."Roots to Grooves" is a production of SIGNL.https://www.signlradio.comhttps://www.instagram.com/signlradiohttps://www.twitter.com/signlradiohttps://www.facebook.com/signlradiohttps://www.mixcloud.com/signlhttps://open.spotify.com/user/96mhz6qfjoztxbl2dpm0uj903?si=aAZpsoEnRAKdx85kr1QWhg
"Deerhunter" are an American rock band from Atlanta, Georgia, originally formed in 2001 by frontman Bradford Cox (vocals, guitar, keyboards) and drummer Moses Archuleta.Bradford prefers an organic approach to writing and recording, which means he favors a sound that doesn't sound too planned or orchestrated. This was most evident in their early releases where a punk rock, lofi garage sound fused with meandering arrangements and repetitive rhythms. But throughout the years the band have honed their craft, pumping out numerous albums as well as a few EP's that they would regularly give out to fans at the their shows. In this episode Jay and Jesse discuss Deerhunter's early years, their creative approaches, and Bradford's unique perspectives on music and life."Roots to Grooves" is a production of SIGNL.https://www.signlradio.comhttps://www.instagram.com/signlradiohttps://www.twitter.com/signlradiohttps://www.facebook.com/signlradiohttps://www.mixcloud.com/signlhttps://open.spotify.com/user/96mhz6qfjoztxbl2dpm0uj903?si=aAZpsoEnRAKdx85kr1QWhg
This week we are doing a special listener suggestion episode, from Kyle Brown, who releases music under the name "Kite Vendor"."DIIV" are a four piece indie rock band based out of Brooklyn, New York. The project originally started after lead songwriter and frontman Zachary Cole Smith left the band "Beach Fossils", for whom he was playing drums for. Cole started by writing and demoing material in his bedroom, not knowing if anything would come of what he was creating, or if anyone would ever hear it. However as his confidence grew he decided to share his new material with the label managers at Captured Tracks, the label Beach Fossils were signed with. The label liked what they heard and decided to put out a couple singles. Off the success of these singles Captured Tracks decided to put out Cole's full-length debut album "Oshin" in 2012.To hear the full story, and a selection of tracks, check out this weeks episode of R2G.To learn the full story, check out this week's episode of Roots to Grooves!"Roots to Grooves" is a production of SIGNL.https://www.signlradio.comhttps://www.instagram.com/signlradiohttps://www.twitter.com/signlradiohttps://www.facebook.com/signlradiohttps://www.mixcloud.com/signlhttps://open.spotify.com/user/96mhz6qfjoztxbl2dpm0uj903?si=aAZpsoEnRAKdx85kr1QWhg
"Django Django" are a British art rock band based in London England. The four piece originally met while studying in Edinburgh. The genesis of the project came from drummer/producer David Maclean, who approached music from a DJ background, primarily beat juggling hip hop before getting into other genres of dance music. When David discovered the drums he would initially record short live loops to incorporate into his DJ sets. It was this approach that led David to create his own beats, and eventually to the initial ideas that would form the basis of Django Django's self-titled debut album.Frontman Vincent Neff started out by teaching himself guitar, by studying the Beatles. It was a process that led him to eventually mess around writing his own songs."Django Django" was initially a melding of David's ability to write beats and instrumentals, and Vincent's ability to craft songs, lyrics and melodies. Not long after they began to collaborate, they drafted in fellow students Jimmy Dixon on bass and Tommy Grace on synths. To learn the full story, check out this week's episode of Roots to Grooves!"Roots to Grooves" is a production of SIGNL.https://www.signlradio.comhttps://www.instagram.com/signlradiohttps://www.twitter.com/signlradiohttps://www.facebook.com/signlradiohttps://www.mixcloud.com/signlhttps://open.spotify.com/user/96mhz6qfjoztxbl2dpm0uj903?si=aAZpsoEnRAKdx85kr1QWhg
0:27 - I moved back to Houston. Here's why. (And don't worry, this will remain a Seattle/Houston podcast) 6:47 - I'm glad that Brian Flores is suing the NFL. But it has nothing to do with the alleged discrimination, and everything to do with a problem across sports. 14:52 - It's practically impossible to unite all Seahawks fans, but I've got an argument based on old school football AND science (physics to be exact) that all fans should be able to agree on. 22:40 - The Texans won't be winning an optics battle anytime soon. But can we lighten up just a little bit before assuming every decision will turn into a disaster? 29:31 - My Lord and Savior Tom Brady (did I stutter?) retired. I'll tell you what aspect of his career impressed me the most. 36:31 - I caught up with my good friend - and Seattle radio legend - David Grosby, aka "The Groz". We talked about his 50 year career in the business, his favorite Seattle sports memories, and how fans can keep from becoming spoiled. 1:29:27 - And to wrap up the show, I answered an Ask Gallant Anything Question: what's the most embarrassing thing you've done to try and impress a girl? You can ask questions to the show too. Email GallantSays@Gmail.com, or leave a voicemail at 781-452-4322.
