Send us a textSteve Smith of the Vapors stops by to discuss their latest release, Wasp in the Jar, their upcoming tour, and their longevity career. *****Best known for their massive 1980 worldwide hit “Turning Japanese,” The Vapors continue to bring their individually styled brand of music to fans old and new in the form of high-quality live performances and the ongoing development of critically acclaimed new material. The band, formed in 1979, had already gained a substantial live following around their hometown of Guildford, Surrey and in London, when they were brought to large UK audiences with their support slot on The Jam's iconic 1979 “Setting Sons” tour, by then managed by The Jam's Bruce Foxton and Paul Weller's father John. The release of debut single “Prisoners” in 1979 was followed by 1980's “Turning Japanese “alongside the classic first album New Clear Days. The single reached Number 3 in the UK, Number 1 in Australia, and hit the top 10 in both New Zealand and Canada whilst becoming a mainstream Billboard Top 40 hit in the US. The debut album spawned further hits “News At Ten” and” Waiting for the Weekend” before the very different, but equally well received second album “Magnets” arriving in 1981, providing the singles “Spiders” and further hit “Jimmie Jones”, with the band touring extensively in the UK, US and Australia throughout this period. The band parted company late in 1981, with all members going on to have varied and successful careers across the entertainment industry. In 2016, after a decade of Internet clamour for a revival, they announced their reformation for a short series of gigs, including a sell-out show at London's Dingwalls. Over 170 gigs and 2020's comeback album third album Together and several singles later, they're stronger and more relevant than ever. The band continue to write and perform and have completed two headline tours in the UK since the pandemic, as well as appearing at the Pasadena Rose Bowl's “Cruel World” festival in May 2023, touring the US in 2024 and recording their exciting statement fourth album Wasp In A Jar (to be released on 28th February 2025). They continue to deliver polished shows featuring songs spanning their entire 45-year history. Website: https://www.thevapors.co.uk/Lost 80s Live Tickets: https://lost80slive.com/buy-now/*******If you would like to contact the show about being a guest, please email us at Dauna@bettertopodcast.comUpcoming guests can be found: https://dmneedom.com/upcoming-guest Follow us on Social MediaInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/author_d.m.needom/Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/bettertopodcastwithdmneedomIntro and Outro music compliments of Fast Suzi©2025 Better To...Podcast with D. Send us a textThe invisible art of music production takes center stage in this fascinating deep dive with Jay, Tiffany, and special guest Mark, who brings decades of musical knowledge to the conversation. What begins with nostalgic recollections of sneaking backstage at a David Lee Roth concert evolves into a masterclass on what makes truly great music tick. The trio explores the meticulous methods of legendary producers like Mutt Lange, whose perfectionism had one of Nashville's premier guitarists repeating just four measures for nearly a week until capturing the precise take he wanted. This standard of excellence explains why Lange's productions for artists like AC/DC, Def Leppard, and Shania Twain remain timeless sonic benchmarks decades later.A spirited debate emerges when the question "Who is the greatest bassist of all time?" hits the table. The hosts and audience members champion virtuosos from across genres—Jaco Pastorius's jazz fusion brilliance, Geddy Lee's progressive rock complexity, Les Claypool's avant-garde techniques, and the funk mastery of Flea. After passionate advocacy and thoughtful analysis of what makes a bassist truly exceptional, Victor Wooten emerges victorious, celebrated for his revolutionary approach to the instrument. When analyzing Tyler Braden's "God & Guns and Roses," the conversation transforms into a fascinating breakdown of music production's three pillars: songwriting quality, performance excellence, and production craftsmanship. This analytical framework offers rare insight into how industry professionals evaluate music beyond subjective preferences. The episode also touches on genre crossover controversies, with heated opinions about which artists are making authentic evolutions versus calculated commercial moves. Whether you're a musician, producer, or simply a passionate music fan, this episode delivers both entertainment and education in equal measure.LinksJay Franze: https://JayFranze.comVirtually You: https://www.virtuallyyouva.com/ Support the show

Let Us Know What You Think of the Show!Date: April 2, 2025Name of podcast: Backstage Pass RadioS8: E4: Julia Lage (Bass Player - Vixen / Smith/Kotzen) A Magnificent Musical MigrationSHOW SUMMARY:Julia Lage's musical journey crosses oceans, genres, and expectations. The current touring bassist for iconic all-female rock band Vixen opens up about her unexpected path from classical beginnings to rock stardom.  Growing up in São Paulo, Brazil, Julia's first musical love wasn't the bass but the flute. Attending an arts-focused Waldorf school, she developed her ear playing classical instruments but failed an orchestra audition because she couldn't sight-read. This disappointment became a turning point when her mother introduced her to rock music – Led Zeppelin, Jimi Hendrix, Aerosmith – opening a world of possibility that would shape her future.  By 17, Julia was touring Brazil with a successful band for 13 years, playing to massive crowds (once performing for 2.5 million people!) and appearing on major TV shows. But despite commercial success, she felt creatively unfulfilled. Her life transformed when she met guitarist Richie Kotzen (now her husband), leading to her relocation to Los Angeles and fresh musical opportunities. Through connections and remarkable talent, she joined Vixen in 2021, collaborates with Adrian Smith (Iron Maiden) and Richie in their Smith/Kotzen project, and creates compelling solo material in her home studio.  What shines through our conversation is Julia's authenticity and genuine passion. While discussing her various projects – including upcoming Vixen music, Smith/Kotzen's new album featuring her bass on five tracks, and her solo singles – she reveals the challenges of balancing creative work with the business side of music. Her advice to aspiring musicians comes from hard-earned wisdom: know what you want to accomplish, focus on that path, and pursue it with genuine passion.  Follow Julia's musical adventures on all platforms under Julia Lage (L-A-G-E) and discover why this classically-trained flautist-turned-rock-bassist continues to captivate audiences worldwide.Sponsor Link:WWW.ECOTRIC.COMWWW.SIGNAD.COMWWW.RUNWAYAUDIO.COMBackstage Pass Radio Social Media Handles:Facebook - @backstagepassradiopodcast @randyhulseymusicInstagram - @Backstagepassradio @randyhulseymusicTwitter - @backstagepassPC @rhulseymusicWebsite - backstagepassradio.com and randyhulsey.comArtist(s) Web Pagewww.julialage.comCall to actionWe ask our listeners to like, share, and subscribe to the show and the artist's social media pages. Last December (2024) some of our very good friends invited us to the Smith Center here in Las Vegas to check out a band I was unfamiliar with, the Huntertones. From the moment they took the stage this six-piece band came out swinging with super high energy and one of the tightest, most entertaining collections of music I have ever heard. Driving the low end, Adam DeAscentis did a superb job of tying the melody and the percussion elements, together with great skill. The horn section reminded me of early Chicago with its precision and smooth unison. And I was pleasantly surprised with Dan's tenor sax tone as it was so full and meaty. I later confirmed that he plays a 1954 Selmer (If I recall correctly); they don't make horns like that anymore. After we thoroughly enjoyed this show, I met Adam and made a connection for us to chat in more detail for this interview.Join me as we hear about Adam's musical journey, how he gets his sound, and interesting details about the Huntertones and their plans for the future. Here is Adam DeAscentis! This interview first appeared in Bass Musician Magazine in February 2025Go to jazzguitartoday.com and bassmusicianmagazine.com more interviews and lessons.

Born in 1966 in San Antonio, TX, King Williams was moved around a lot as a young lad. The moves landed the family in Glenview, IL, a suburb of Chicago. After overcoming the urge to pronounce the “S” at the end of “Illinois”, he moved more freely in northern society and came to genuinely love the city itself. In that time, the need to play music reared its spiny head and he learned how to play bass. Sinking his teeth into it, he became somewhat competent and enjoys playing to this day. King noted, however, that that wasn't likely to provide a steady income, so he created a fall back plan, becoming a recording engineer. A short stint at Columbia College under renown engineer and curmudgeon Malcom Chisholm gave king much of what he'd need to succeed as a recordist, though it was as yet unrealized. These two career paths crisscrossed and caromed off each other, but the lure of steadier work as an engineer eventually landed King a job in Nashville, TN at famed RCA recording studio “A”, then known as “Javelina Recording”. After a few years of that, King went freelance and spent much of his time at local houses such as OceanWay, The Tracking Room and, Sound Emporium. In 2004, King was approached by recently minted Music Director at The Grand Ole Opry, Steve Gibson, to join the staff as broadcast and post production mixer. King was hired on and had been the responsible engineer for that seat for the last 20 years, and will likely still be in that chair through The Opry's 100th anniversary, which will be celebrated throughout 2025."Still on the Run" - https://www.fbrmusic.com/Host - Trey MitchellIG - treymitchellphotography IG - feeding_the_senses_unsensoredFB - facebook.com/profile.php?id=100074368084848Threads - www.threads.net/@treymitchellphotographySponsorship Information/Guest Suggestions  -  ftsunashville@gmail.com

I first heard The National 17 years ago this month I think, and I fell in love instantly. They've continued to be one of my favourite bands, and it's been great to see them ascend to new heights of popularity and pursue interesting creative directions in the band and outside. Guitarist Aaron Dessner is now a key producer and co-writer for the likes of Taylor Swift and Gracie Abrams. His twin brother Bryce Dessner is a composer whose orchestral and chamber compositions have been commissioned by the LA Philharmonic, Edinburgh International Festival and Kronos Quartet amongst others, and he's collaborated with the likes of Philip Glass, Steve Reich, Paul Simon, Sufjan Stevens and many more. Frontman Matt Berninger has become one of the most compelling rock frontman of the 21st century with his often darkly funny, self-deprecating lyrics, and gangly, physical stage presence. Drummer Bryan Devendorf is one of the most distinctive drummers operating in rock today. Which leaves my guest this episode, bassist Scott Devendorf. I feel like Scott is the member of the band I knew least about. Obviously I've seen him onstage many times anchoring the band, but I was intrigued to see how the interview would go, and was pleased to discover Scott was excellent company. The National have just released a new live album entitled “Rome” which was recorded this past June in, well Rome obviously. It does a pretty good job of capturing the catharsis and sometimes chaos of a National show. I thought it was an interesting decision to focus on one particular show rather than compile tracks from across the tour. I was curious how they would handle the situations where Matt goes walkabout with the microphone, climbing into the crowd and getting mobbed with fans singing their heads off. Scott had a lot to say about these decisions, and about The National as a live act in general. He was really generous with his time. I only found out this interview was happening less than 24 hours before it took place, so it was quite a whirlwind getting it prepped and organised. I again had some technical issues so I've mostly just used the zoom feed but it sounds fine. To have The National represented on the podcast really means a lot. This will be the last episode of the year, and what a way to go out.
