Hazy guitars, buried vocals and walls of distortion– the shoegaze sound may have peaked in the '90s, but it never really went away. This week, hosts Jim DeRogatis and Greg Kot highlight some of the genre's pioneers along with more recent favorites. The hosts also hear picks from the production staff.Join our Facebook Group: https://bit.ly/3sivr9TBecome a member on Patreon: https://bit.ly/3slWZvcSign up for our newsletter: https://bit.ly/4frcVZoMake a donation via PayPal: https://bit.ly/3dmt9lUSend us a Voice Memo: Desktop: bit.ly/2RyD5Ah Mobile: sayhi.chat/soundops Featured Songs:Lowtide, "Elizabeth Tower," Southern Mind, Rice Is Nice, Opposite Number, 2018The Beatles, "With a Little Help from My Friends," Sgt. Scarlet House is one of the most intriguing emerging voices in alternative music—and his story goes far beyond the music. In this episode of Caught on the Mike, we go back to the beginning with the 25-year-old Charlotte, North Carolina artist and explore how his experiences with homelessness, cancer, heartbreak, and survival helped shape the sound and identity of Scarlet House. We also dive deep into his highly anticipated debut album, Angels, arriving August 28. Scarlet House opens up about the inspiration behind the 14-track record, the emotional journey connecting songs like “With You,” “Cherish,” “Who We Were,” and “Made For You,” and why his newest single is one he simply wants to let speak for itself. We talk about the evolution from Homecoming to Angels, creating music as a one-man band, his cinematic blend of shoegaze, grunge and alternative rock, touring with Violent Vira and Flawed Mangoes, and stepping onto the Vans Warped Tour stage. This is a conversation about music, survival, vulnerability, and what happens when you turn your experiences into something other people can feel.Scarlet House's debut album Angels is out August 28.www.caughtonthemike.comcaughtonthemike@gmail.com
Today our hosts are joined by Isaac Nelson to talk about the development of Beam Splitter. Isaac is the other half of OBNE's R&D department, and an actor of some renown, recognizable for characters such as Old Ike and whatever we call the corporate guy who drinks the Sunlight tincture. Isaac gives nod to his object (a blue strat) and describes himself as not a particularly curious gear guy, while also giving insight into the inspiration behind his triple tracking multi-distortion mono stereo trereo embiggening behemoth, Beam Splitter.

Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.
Today our hosts discuss two solo sets. Andy recently returned from Post Fest, where he played his first solo set in several years. He talks about how it went, the one technical difficulty he ran into, and the overall setup to create a visually and aurally compelling experience. Then Dan talks about prepping for his first solo set in a couple years, and the line between exploratory instrumental improvisation and simply singing the songs he's written. Then, some voice mails allow them to both give and take advice. If you don't feel like listening, just remember this: it's ok. The show will go on. You're doing great! Today our hosts chat with Zak Sherman of The Audio Cultivation Project. They talk about his entrance into pedal building coming at an early stage in his musical development, and how that leads to designs that come from an unexpected place. They also talk about the upcoming Midwest Pedal Fest, and why he and Alec Breslow chose to host it in Detroit. And of course, they talk about his chosen object: a particularly modded Telecaster that speaks to who he is as a player and pedal designer. They try to tackle the important questions, like what is a Telecaster, what is the midwest, and who in this room is a poser? My feature on things that were denied classic status on release or have been forgotten about since. The first 5 Ep's by Shoegaze legends, RIDE, have not been forgotten but the band is often painted by their first two albums alone. Another two albums worth of classic material was released across that same brief period.

Deep Cuts: Lost & Found goes shoegazing and gets lost in the wall of sound. But what is Shoegaze? The definition is about as vague as the music itself, but you know it when you hear it. This week we're talking to Adam Franklin and Jimmy Hartridge of shoegaze OGs Swervedriver. They start their BrooklynVegan-presented tour celebrating the 35th anniversary of their debut album Raise on August 18th in Cambridge, Massachusetts. We also discuss touring with Soundgarden in the US in the '90s, touring with Failure in the 2010s, the current shoegaze revival and lots more. All Swervedriver tour dates are here. -- Credits: Hosted & produced by Bill Pearis Mixed and mastered by Nick Gray Theme music by Michael Silverstein photo: Steve Gullick

Simon Reynolds in conversation with David Eastaugh https://store.whiterabbitbooks.co.uk/products/still-in-a-dream Twenty years after his acclaimed postpunk best-seller, Rip It Up and Start Again, Simon Reynolds tells the tale of what happened next: the underground explosion of noisepop, shoegaze, slacker rock and grunge that reverberated through the mid-Eighties into the early Nineties. Capturing the musical exhilaration of the era along with the alienation of youth during a period of ascendant conservative politics and glitzy mainstream pop, Still in a Dream celebrates a golden age of guitar reinvention, a second psychedelia of mind-blowing sounds pioneered by bands like My Bloody Valentine and Sonic Youth. In Britain, groups like Cocteau Twins and Slowdive escaped into shimmering dreamworlds while American underground rockers like Dinosaur Jr. and Pavement blended apathy and urgency into thrilling noise. A propulsive and personal account from a journalist who covered this music in real time from the frontlines, Still in a Dream vividly recreates a period that was the last blast for the analogue culture of vinyl records and music papers, before the Internet changed everything.

Acclaimed author Simon Reynolds joins us in Hammersmith to discuss his latest book. A journey through the many bands and scenes he wrote about between 1984 and 1994, Still in a Dream gives us a chance to ask our guest about shoegaze, C86 and the book's autobiographical threads. Clips from an early 2000 Jay-Z audio interview by Dorian Lynskey prompt a general discussion of the hip hop superstar whose debut album Reasonable Doubt turns 30 this week. Jasper and William then wrap up the episode with their highlights among new additions to the RBP library, including pieces about LL Cool J (1986), Rick Rubin (2009) and Randy Newman's priceless song about Vladimir Putin (2017). Many thanks to special guest Simon Reynolds. Still In a Dream: Shoegaze, Slackers and the Reinvention of Rock, 1984–1994 is published by Hachette and available now. Pieces discussed: Younger Than Yesterday, The Butthole Surfers: Deeper & Down, "Dream-Pop" Bands Define the Times in Britain, Jay-Z audio, Jay-Z: The Blueprint (Roc-A-Fella), Oscar Peterson Trio: Assembly Hall, Worthing, LL Cool J: He Has Seen Rap 'n' Roll Future, Rick Rubin and Randy Newman: And You Thought 'Short People' Was Controversial?.

Today our hosts welcome Philippe Herndon of Caroline Guitar Company. He talks about their latest pedal, a self-proclaimed normie pedal called the Aaron Graves Overdrive. We talk about specific design choices, the story of its namesake, and the importance of versatility even in a fairly fundamental pedal. Plus, we get the scoop on why they use pictures instead of labels, and Philippe has a surprise for us in lieu of the traditional object talk. It's basically a two parter, so fire it up and get listening! Today our hosts welcome themselves! Andy talks about his recent show at a planetarium: the gear involved, the style of preparation, and the experience of performing with previous guest Matt Kidd. Then they take some calls with questions about a variety of things, and their answers range from "we've never heard of it" to "sorry, that was a lot of information and I don't know if I answered your question." A whole new age of psychedelia kicked off in the mid-‘80s, of dream-weavers and glorious underachievers, a complete rejection of the standard rock approach to stagecraft, sound and self-promotion. Simon Reynolds was at the heart of it, writing for Melody Maker and piping aboard the pioneering noise-mongers aiming to entrance and disorientate, as recalled in his new book ‘Still In A Dream: Shoegaze, Slackers and the Reinvention of Rock 1984-1994'. He looks back with us here from his home in Los Angeles at its key bands, events and spiritual godfathers, these among them … … the return to childhood via Syd Barrett and Jonathan Richman to Sarah Records … is ‘feeble little horse' the most Shoegaze band name ever? ... what it was about Morrissey that made Smiths singles sink after Top Of The Pops … the reason Bowie formed a band … charming/infuriating interviews with the Cocteau Twins: “words only have any meaning when they're sung” … how Britpop brought down the curtain of the wall of sound … Shoegaze, Dreampop, Lovelynoise, Wide-Brimmed Hat Music and the rock press attempt to impose order: “if a band was on the cover they could double their fee” ... the divine arrogance of Lawrence of Felt who “didn't want ordinary people buying my records” … the ever-extending “noise chasms” of My Bloody Valentine … “shattering quartz”: reviewing music that's about sound not words … Shoegaze DNA in the 21st Century ... and the greatest album of that decade, “each track like a session beer”.
