Natalie Lew, also known as Sea Lemon, released her debut album Diving for a Prize in June 2025 on Luminelle Recordings. Across 12 songs, reverb-heavy guitars wash underneath vocals that allude to made-up stories and unhealthy obsessions. For example, “Stay” draws inspiration from the real-life antics of an elderly security guard at a thrift store while “Rear View” pulls from Lew’s original fiction about a naive baseball player’s failing career. She proudly likens her sound to shoegaze pioneers Cocteau Twins. KEXP’s Roddy Nikpour talks with Sea Lemon about launching her music career in New York and moving back to her hometown of Seattle. She has since opened for American Football in two sold-out shows and collaborated with Northwest music legend Ben Gibbard — all within five years of picking up a guitar for the first time. “I was an insanely big Death Cab fan as a kid,” Lew says in the interview. “Ben reached out to me over Instagram. Somehow, he had found my music outside of realizing the fact that I was in Seattle. Then we played a show together, and we did a song together, ‘Crystals,’ which was the first song that I recorded for my album. Yeah, we'll make the same disclaimer we made the last time we talked about shoegaze. We know the term is polarizing. We realize that it was coined by the press as a term of derision for what had previously been known as "the scene that celebrates itself." Legend has it that writer Andy Ross first used it in a Sounds review to describe how Moose singer/guitarist Russell Yates was constantly looking down at the lyrics he had taped to the floor and/or his guitar pedals. But, face it, you hear the term and you know exactly what it is...ethereal vocals, woozy melodies, ear-piercingly loud, effects-laden guitars, all awash in a psychedelic haze. Nowadays, the bands that play this kind of music wear the "shoegaze" badge with pride. But the O.G.s had to walk so you could run, kids. Hence, this week we are celebrating some of the great shoegaze albums of the 1990s. Joining us is the singer/songwriter/guitarist of '90s Vancouver cult shoegazers Movieland, Alan D. Boyd. Movieland has been honored with the first installment of an archival series from 604 Decades that takes a look back at Vancouver's rich, if unexplored arts history. Wir haben die unserer Meinung nach 45 besten Indie-Songs aus den Jahren 1985 bis 1989 gewählt. Kriterium war: Gitarrenorientierter Sound, kein Gothic und natürlich kein Mainstream. In den Songs unseres Rankings finden sich Rock- und Pop-Elemente, Shoegaze und New Wave. Und eben jener typische Schrammel-Sound, der den Begriff Indie für ein eigenes Genre u.a. mitprägte. Wie wir es schon in unserer Folge über das Jahr 1985gesagt haben, wurde der Post-Punk-Begriff ab dieser Zeit von der Bezeichnung Independent abgelöst. Das große Experimentieren der Post-Punk-Zeit war vorbei.Die sich daraus gebildeten Genres entwickelten sich weiter und diverse Bands kultivierten einen neuen, gitarrenlastigen Sound, veröffentlichten auf unabhängigen Labels und schufen somit den Begriff Independent – kurz Indie –für ihre Musik.Oder kurz gesagt – wenn ihr unser Ranking hört, wisst ihrwas gemeint ist. "Big Dog", Ende März erschienen, mag "offiziell" das Debütalbum von Bria Salmena sein – doch ein Neuling ist die kanadische Musikerin mitnichten: Seit 2013 singt sie in der von ihr mitbegründeten Alternative-Rock/Post-Punk-Band FRIGS und ist zudem Teil der Live-Band des südafrikanischen Country-Grenzgängers Orville Peck. Auch unter eigenem Namen kann sie bereits Veröffentlichungen vorweisen, darunter die beiden wortspielerisch betitelten EPS "Cuntry Covers Vol. 1" bzw. "Vol. 2". Auf diesen interpretierte sie, dem Titel entsprechend aus sozusagen explizit weiblicher Perspektive Lieder, die beispielsweise von Waylon Jennings, Loretta Lynn oder Glen Campbell geschrieben oder bekannt gemacht wurden. Nun also "Big Dog", benannt nach einem Spitznamen, den ihr ein enger Freund in einer Lebenskrise "verpasste": Ein Dutzend eigene Songs, geschrieben mit ihrem langjährigen musikalischen Partner Duncan Jay Jennings, von denen gleich der erste mit seinem an einen heranbrausenden Zug erinnernden Schlagzeug-Intro klar macht, dass es hier jemand ernst meint und etwas zu sagen hat, sagen muss. Einflüsse aus Krautrock, Dark Wave, Shoegaze und elektronischer Musik verarbeitet Salmena in ihren eindringlichen Liedern, mit denen sie "eine Geschichte der Transformation erzählt – eine zutiefst persönliche Erkundung der Resilienz und eine Deklaration künstlerischer Unabhängigkeit."

JimratTake a walk with me down Fascination Street, as I get to know the Boston Shoegaze band Jimrat. This group of musicians got together in the Boston area after meeting in college, and various music scenes. Jimrat consists of: Sam Dvorin, Josie Arthur, Emma DeLaRosa, Elicia Benavides, and Tim Ro. In this episode, I get them to tell the story of how each of them came to be in the band. Since they each came along in a fascinating way, they tell the story 'popcorn' style. All of them have recently graduated or are still in college. They basically went to different schools. We got musicians from Boston University, Suffolk, Berkley, and Emerson. Throughout the episode, each of them explains how they came to Boston, and why most of them equate the city to living in Albuquerque! From Covid, to the cartoon Tom & Jerry, these young guns talk about everything. Finally, we discuss their new album. It's called 'Instant' and is 'an audio-visual album'. Miley Cyrus just released three singles from her ninth studio album, Something Beautiful. Inspired by Pink Floyd's The Wall—specifically the 1982 feature film based on the album—Cyrus is not just sharing new music but a whole visual album, each song accompanied by a music video shot by director Panos Cosmatos. We last heard from Cyrus in 2023 with her massive smash "Flowers," which found the industry veteran finding some kind of inner peace. With her new songs, Cyrus is turning from healing herself to healing the world. She described the project as "a concept album that's an attempt to medicate somewhat of a sick culture through music."
