Hoe betrouwbaar is een geheugentest als er tegelijk een hond blaft, de postbode aanbelt en het nieuws op tv staat? In deze tweede aflevering van de festivalserie loopt verslaggever Sander Nieuwenhuijsen op Lowlands Science een onderzoekscontainer binnen, met daarin een tot in detail nagebouwde huiskamer. Compleet met bankstel, planten en een keukentje met barretje.   "Wij hebben een ervaring voor bezoekers die uit twee delen bestaat: voorlichting over dementie, en digitale taken om het denkvermogen in kaart te brengen."  In Nederland hebben op dit moment naar schatting 300.000 mensen dementie. De ziekte van Alzheimer is de meest voorkomende vorm, maar er zijn ook andere varianten, zoals dementie met Lewy bodies en frontotemporale dementie.   Neuropsycholoog en onderzoeker Sietske Sikkes onderzoekt met The Digital Dementia Experience hoe betrouwbaar digitale geheugentests zijn wanneer ze thuis worden afgenomen. Een omgeving die, anders dan een rustige testkamer in het ziekenhuis, vol zit met afleiding.  Festivalbezoekers doorlopen een digitale geheugentest in een van vier condities: zonder afleiding, met geluid, met beeld of met een combinatie van beide. Sander loopt mee met een groepje proefpersonen en vraagt Sikkes wat deze aanpak straks kan betekenen voor de toekomst van dementiediagnostiek en welk gevaar er schuilt in te vroeg vertrouwen op dit soort nieuwe tests. 

S6E31 - Ja ja, we weten het, we mogen eigenlijk niet meer over deze uit de hand gelopen camping praten. Gaan we toch doen, want het was ge-wel-dig. En het FWP’tje vandaag is minstens zo goed: zou jij een rela nemen met een jilla-boy? Het pakt Mo wel.

Hoe kun je onderzoek doen naar het effect van alcohol op smaakbeleving? Bij een ethische commissie kom je daar niet ver mee, op een festival wél.  Verslaggever Sander Nieuwenhuijsen bezoekt Lowlands Science, het wetenschapsgebied naast het hoofdpodium op het festival in Biddinghuizen. Hier verzamelen onderzoekers drie dagen lang data bij duizenden vrijwillige proefpersonen voor onderzoeken die in een laboratorium veel lastiger te organiseren zijn. Bij de snackmuur van het onderzoek ‘De vetverleidelijke borrelplank: smaakinteracties onder invloed' draait alles om één vraag: wat gebeurt er met je smaakbeleving als je alcohol of drugs hebt gebruikt? Bezoekers proeven snacks met een mayonaisedip in een vetarme en een vetrijke variant en beantwoorden vragen over smaak en gezondheidsbeleving - na een blaastest en een korte vragenlijst over middelengebruik. Het onderzoek combineert twee onderzoekslijnen van Wageningen University & Research: voedingswetenschap (wat is gezond?) en voedseltechnologie (hoe maak je dat ook lekker?).  Arianne van Eck legt uit waarom het festivalterrein een unieke onderzoeksomgeving is, welke logistieke uitdagingen een pop-upkeuken met zich meebrengt en wat de bevindingen straks kunnen betekenen voor de voedselindustrie en voor iedereen die 's nachts na een paar drankjes toch een gezonde én lekkere snack wil. "Als ik mijn ethische commissie vraag: ik wil dat mensen zes consumpties alcohol achter elkaar drinken zodat ik kan onderzoeken wat dat doet met smaakbeleving.. dat wordt niet goedgekeurd."   

De festivalzomer is bijna ten einde, maar in Amerika stond afgelopen weekend een bijzondere op het programma: Daisy Chain Fields Festival, een festival voor een door de girls, opgezet door Olivia Rodrigo. Op de line-up: onder andere Bikini Kill, Chappell Roan, Santigold en The Breeders, en natuurlijk Olivia Rodrigo zelf, allemaal netjes even groot op de poster. En verder: op Lowlands stonden mesnen niet alleen in de rij voor de Adonis, maar ook voor de wijnbar. Wat was het geheim? 

Het is de donderdag na Lowlands, dus de overprikkeling is nog in volle gang. Is er een festival in Nederland waar meer gebeurt per vierkante meter? Atze en Malou nemen het met je door. Verder liefde voor Dolly Parton én een probleem voor bands die hun eigen merch versturen binnen Europa.

In deze speciale live-aflevering, opgenomen op Lowlands, staat de oorlog in Soedan centraal: een conflict dat weinig aandacht krijgt in de wereld. Presentator Esma Linnemann spreekt met journalisten, activisten en artiesten om de complexe oorlog gedetailleerd uit te leggen. Buitenlandredacteur Iva Venneman schetst de achtergrond van het conflict. Ze legt uit hoe de strijd ontstond tussen het Soedanese leger (SAF) en de paramilitaire Rapid Support Forces (RSF), twee voormalige bondgenoten die na de val van dictator al-Bashir in een gewelddadige machtsstrijd belandden. Vredesactivist Mekka Abdelgabar vertelt hoe de oorlog families verscheurt. Ook die van haar. Haar broers en neven dienen aan verschillende kanten van het front. Onderzoeksjournalisten Laurie Treffers en Erik Verwiel laten zien hoe zij met open-sourceonderzoek (OSINT), satellietbeelden en video's van sociale media oorlogsmisdaden reconstrueren in gebieden waar journalisten geen toegang hebben. Dit weekend zijn weer tienduizenden mensen in Biddinghuizen voor Lowlands, een van de grootste festivals van ons land. Sinds dit jaar staat daar een nieuwe man aan het roer: Camiel le Rutte. Hij neemt het stokje over van Eric van Eerdenburg die 26 jaar Lowlands leidde. En voor het eerst in heel veel jaren is het festival niet uitverkocht en de festivalwereld piept en kraakt. Wat betekent dat voor de toekomst van Lowlands? Voor Le Rutte is een van zijn favoriete Lowlands-ervaringen de show van Stromae in 2022. Maar de tijd van wereldsterren in de Alpha-tent lijkt voorbij. Door eigen shows in bijvoorbeeld de Arena stijgen ook de gages van de artiesten en dat maakt het ingewikkelder om ze te strikken voor de festivaltent. Het is een van de uitdagingen waar Le Rutte voor staat de komende jaren. Naast de überhaupt stijgende prijzen, een generatiewissel en bezoekers die moeten kiezen tussen festivals vanwege de hogere ticketprijzen. Reageren? Das "Alkohol-Gefühl" simulieren: Drei Techniken (Wasser-Destillation, Dampfinfusion mit 172°C und natürliches Glycerin) für komplexen Geschmack ohne Alkohol. Destillation auf reiner Wasserbasis: Im Gegensatz zu herkömmlichen Methoden, bei denen Alkohol als Trägerstoff die Aromen löst, destillieren sie direkt mit Wasser. Da Wacholder seine Aromen nicht an Wasser abgibt, suchen sie clevere Alternativen wie Selleriesamen, die perfekt in Wasser florieren Dampfinfusion: Frische Zutaten wie Ingwer werden in speziellen Tanks platziert und bei 172 °C heißem Dampf regelrecht "geschockt". Das Prinzip ähnelt einem hochkonzentrierten heißen Tee, löst die ätherischen Öle aber auf eine viel intensivere Art heraus Mazeration mit Glycerin: Glycerin, ein natürlicher Zuckeralkohol, besitzt ähnliche Trägereigenschaften wie echter Alkohol. Werden Zutaten darin mazeriert, verleiht das dem Getränk eine immense Tiefe, Schwere und Textur, die reinen Wasser-Destillaten fehlt Tasting-Highlights: Spice (Pfeffer imitiert das Brennen im Hals) Herbal (retronasaler Abgang wie bei Wein/Whiskey) Orange Bitter (Rezept von 1910, perfekt für alkoholfreien Negroni). In this Delirious W.E.S.T. 2026 athlete wrap-up episode, I catch up with Matthew Farrand after his huge journey from London to Western Australia to take on the 200 miler. And what a journey it was. Matthew arrived from the other side of the world, dealt with jet lag, pre-race nerves, cold nights, rain, tracker issues, tired legs, sore knees, sleep deprivation, and the small matter of trying to keep moving for more than 100 hours. As Matthew says in this episode, Delirious doesn't really feel like four days. It feels like one very, very, very long day - with some day and night mixed in. We talk about the early calm at the start line, the mental battle that hit much earlier than expected, the moment he questioned whether he was out of his depth, and the advice from Scott and Shaun that helped get him back up and moving again. From Broke Inlet to Mandalay, Walpole, Giant Tingle Tree, Conspicuous Cliffs, Peaceful Bay, Monkey Rocks, Lowlands, Cozy Corner and finally into Albany - Matthew takes us through the highs, lows, odd little moments, painful steps, and unexpected boosts that carried him forward. There were sleep stops in marquees, on air mattresses, in tents, and even a glorious little dirt nap on a sand dune. There were double espressos from his dad, beautiful volunteers, hot food, pancakes, Eccles cakes, whales, wind turbines that seemed to go on forever, and a knee that decided to make the second half of the race “interesting”. But this episode is also about much more than sore legs. It's about resilience. It's about family. It's about how far the body can go when the mind has already tried to quit several times. And it's about the power of having a reason to keep going - including a note from Matthew's daughter reminding him not to forget to bring home that medal. Matthew also shares how the Delirious podcast helped him believe this race was even possible in the first place, which honestly made me a little emotional. Because that really is what this series is all about - showing that everyday people can take on extraordinary things when they train, believe, keep moving, and surround themselves with the right people. This is a beautiful, funny, honest, and very real 200-mile wrap-up. And yes, Matthew may have said he's retired from 200 milers. We'll see

In this Delirious WEST 2026 wrap-up episode, I catch up with Ben Pyman after his 100-mile adventure - and what a run he had. Ben takes us right back to the start line in Walpole, the nervous energy, the familiar faces, the late-night race briefing, and that feeling of finally being let loose into the dark. From there, we follow him through the beautiful, brutal, hilarious and slightly ridiculous journey that is Delirious WEST. There's the early buzz of running with others, meeting fellow podcast guests Warren Page and Jason, the stunning sections through Conspicuous Cliffs, Peaceful Bay and Boat Harbour, and of course - the very important aid station food reviews. Risotto, creamy chicken and potato, bacon and egg sandiches, soup, brownies… honestly, this episode may make you hungry as well as inspired. But it wasn't all smooth running. Ben talks honestly about the soft sand that absolutely smoked him, the long lonely night sections, the hallucinations, the sleepy shuffle from Lowlands to Cosy Corner, and the very real difference a pacer or crew can make when your brain has gone on holiday. One of the most powerful parts of this chat is hearing Ben describe how he came good again after a short sleep, food, rest and sunrise. After hours of dragging himself along, he suddenly found himself running freely through the windmills, feeling like it was a brand-new day - and then, somehow, finishing the final stretch with strength, emotion and a massive sense of pride. Ben finished the 100 miler in 39 hours and 37 minutes, hitting his secret sub-40 goal and coming away with a whole lot of lessons, a black toenail caused by a chair rather than the race, and a very strong suspicion that the 200 miler might be next.  We talk about what worked, what he'd change, why sand training may need to become a thing, how his feet survived almost perfectly, and why Delirious WEST is about so much more than just the kilometres. This is a beautiful, funny, honest episode about community, resilience, food, fatigue, emotion, and those strange ultra moments where you wonder how on earth you're still moving - and then suddenly realise you're running better than you thought possible. We explore the “Geographic Trap” of the Highland Boundary Fault, the Coastal Squeeze of the Clearances, and the legal engineering of the 1845 Poor Law that left the starving with no right to relief. Using the latest research from Sir Tom Devine and Michael Lynch, we investigate the Empathy Gap between the absentee Landlords and the crofters clinging to the soil in the Western Isles. As the “Year of Railway Mania” gripped the England and the Lowlands of Scotland, a biological rot was creeping north. In this episode, I step away from a simple Highland–Lowland divide and draw on research from Wilson McLeod's PhD thesis, Divided Gaels: Gaelic Scotland and Gaelic Ireland, 1200–1650 to show just how fragmented and uneven Gaelic Scotland really was. Using McLeod's work, I explore how some Highland regions lay at the cultural core of the Lordship of the Isles, while others sat on its margins or were shaped by entirely different political and social forces—and how parts of the Lowlands retained Gaelic far longer than is usually assumed. The result is a far messier, more regional picture of language, identity, and power than the clean lines we often draw on maps. This episode is an invitation to rethink easy categories and to see Gaelic Scotland as a patchwork of overlapping influences rather than a binary world. Sylvie Kreusch is muzikant. Ze begon op haar 16e als zangeres bij ‘Soldier's Heart', waarmee ze in 2013 de muziekwedstrijd ‘De Nieuwe Lichting' van Studio Brussel won. Ze ontving internationale erkenning voor de muziek die ze voor verschillende modeshows maakte. Hierna leerde het grote publiek haar kennen als zangeres bij Warhaus en met haar eerste solo-EP 'BADA BING! BADA BOOM!'. Enkele jaren later brak ze door als soloartiest met haar debuutalbum ‘Montbray'. Met haar nieuwste album ‘Comic Trip' haalde ze inspiratie uit de stripboekenverzameling van haar oma en het leverde begin dit jaar 3 MIA's (Music Industry Award) op. Kreusch speelde op festivals als Lowlands, Into The Great Wide en Open Rock Werchter. Momenteel tourt ze door België, Duitsland, Frankrijk en Nederland.
