Our favorite vinyl records from bands or artists filed under "G". And...GO! In the early 1970s, legendary collaborator and self-proclaimed non-musician Brian Eno famously designed a deck of 115 cards containing elliptical imperatives to spark in the user creative connections unobtainable through regular modes of work. He called his creation "Oblique Strategies." For nearly one half of a century, countless artists and professionals across the globe have benefited from utilizing the oblique strategies technique when attempting to overcome a lull in creative output. In 2022, idiot basement-dwelling, award-winning* hobby podcasters and self-proclaimed Lightnin' Lickers Jay and Deon found themselves uninspired when contemplating the potential themes of their upcoming thirty-first episode. Welcome to the middle of the second British Invasion!  John Howard Jones was born in Southampton, in southern England to Welsh parents.  He grew up in Wales, moved to Canada when he was a teenager, and returned to the UK in the mid 70's where he attended the Royal Northern College of Music in Manchester.  The was the oldest of four boys, all of which became musicians, and started piano at the age of 7.  Dream Into Action is Howard Jones' second studio album, and was released in this month.  It went to number 10 on the Billboard 200, and number 2 on the UK albums chart.  Rupert Hine was the producer, who also produced albums for Rush.  Howard's brother Martin Jones plays bass on this album, and he has the group Afrodiziak as backing vocals on a number of tracks.  Jones had a successful debut release in 1984 called "Human Lib," and "Dream Into Action" would be an even bigger hit.  Howard Jones has a piano and keyboards-driven sound, and his lyrics are quite positive.  Jones believes that his positivity and depth tends to create a negative perception in the media, stating that "what's 'cool' is often very shallow and transient." Jones is still putting out albums today.  He released an album called Transform in 2019, and one called Dialogue in 20222.Bruce brings this synth-heavy 80's album to the podcast. Like to Get to Know You WellThis track preceded the album by over six months.  It came out as a single in August of 1984 as the Summer Olympics were kicking off in Los Angeles, and was dedicated to "the original spirit of the Olympic Games."  It was included in a remix album called "the 12" Album" in November 1984 before being included in this studio album.Assault and BatteryThis is a deeper cut which was played on an episode of Miami Vice.  The lyrics are about the horrors of eating meat - Jones was a vegetarian at the time, and is a vegan today.  This songs reminds us of Styx and Elton John with the keyboard work.  Life In One DayThe third single from the album (or fourth, depending upon how you count "Like to Get to Know You Well") went to number 19 on the Billboard Hot 100.  The lyrics are about not rushing through life, but taking time to enjoy the place where you are.  The British vocal group Afrodiziak can be heard contributing backing vocals to this song. Things Can Only Get BetterThe first single from the album is the big hit.  It went to number 5 on the Billboard Hot 100.  Afrodiziak contributes backing vocals to this track as well.  It is a very deliberately positive song, encouraging the listener who is down on his luck to keep going, and to keep looking for better days ahead. ENTERTAINMENT TRACK:Theme to the from the television series "Moonlighting" by Al JarreauBruce Willis launched his career in this detective romance comedy that starred Willis and Cybill Shepherd. STAFF PICKS:Don't Come Around Here No More by Tom Petty & the HeartbreakersRob features a song written by Tom Petty and Dave Stewart (from the Eurythmics).  This was the main hit from the sixth studio album "Southern Accents."  It is a break-up song partially inspired by a conversation Stewart overheard between Joe Walsh and Stevie Nicks.  The Alice In Wonderland-themed video is a must-see.We Are the World by U.S.A. for AfricaLynch brings us the ultimate supergroup.  This was a benefit single for victims of famine in Africa, and raised over $60 million.  The song was written by Michael Jackson and Lionel Richie, and Quincey Jones produced it.  Musicians appearing in the band were a veritable "who's who" in the music world, including performers as diverse as Stevie Wonder, Bruce Springsteen, Willie Nelson, Steve Perry, and Ray Charles.White Lies by Jason & the Scorchers Wayne's staff pick is off the group's first full length album, "Lost and Found."  Jason & the Scorchers' high energy and country twang led them to be described as "cowpunk."  The lyrics describe a couple in a bad relationship.  "Take these chains and set me free, release me from this misery.  Now, don't you waste my time with your alibis 'cause your heart can't hide what I see in your eyes."One Night in Bangkok by Murray HeadBruce goes to the theater for his staff pick.  This song is from a concept album and musical called "Chess," written by Benny Andersson and  Bjorn Ulvaeus (formerly of ABBA).  The musical is about a Cold War-era chess tournament between two grandmasters, one American and one Soviet.  Murray Head performs the spoken verse and Anders Glenmark sings the chorus. COMEDY TRACK:I'm Kissin' You Goodbye by Ray StevensWe finish up this week's podcast with a break-up song in a style only Ray Stevens can deliver.

NO BERLINNIGEL LIVED by Murray Head (Columbia 1973)Concept (with a capital C) album Nigel Lived was released in the same year as Lou Reed's Berlin, and although neither one was deemed acceptable radio fare, and both are theatrically based, playing on disturbing subject matter, they are light years apart. Berlin has been recognized as a masterpiece, a gut-wrenching portrait of abuse, co-dependence, and addiction, and Nigel Lived….? Well, frankly it's hard to tell what it's about. We've been told it concerns a starry eyed young musician who comes to the big city, experiences disillusionment, and takes to heroin. However, even after a close listen with the lyrics at my side, (link included below) I had a hard time following the thread. The original release came with a “found diary” of lyrics, but the lush production by Nick DeCaro is so deeply layered, it's almost impossible to discern a consistent story line beneath the baroque atmosphere. Often the compelling vocal stylings of Murray Head are mixed too low or at odds with an increasingly chaotic arrangement.  This is ambition run riot. Its existence went unheralded, and Mr. Head, a successful musical stage and film performer (Jesus Christ Superstar; Chess, Sunday Bloody Sunday) never performed the songs in public - until now. Intervention records has recently remastered the Phil Brown engineered recording on 180gram vinyl, and that release was very successful, leading Mr. Head to reconsider reopening the Nigel Lived song cache and sharing it live with the world. As a sympathetic thespian I applaud him. Parts of the opus are delightful listening, and rendered live without the added filigree, this dynamic performer has a shot at making his original concept comprehensible. https://www.karaoke-lyrics.net/lyrics/head-murray/pacing-on-the-station-88213

It's finally here... Today, we turn to the Gospel According to Andrew Lloyd Webber: the phenomenon that is Jesus Christ Superstar (1970)!   We talk about: – The context of the late 60s/early 70s that gave rise to a rock opera treatment of the Jesus story – The eroticism in Mary Magdalene's (and maybe Judas'?) relationship with Jesus and the question of how sexuality & love intersect in the Christian tradition. What does it mean to fall in love with a God with a human body? – Mary Magdalene (not a prostitute in the Bible!) and the way the musical treats her as a woman, a sex worker, and a romantic lead. – Anti-Judaism and Anti-Semitism in Jesus Christ Superstar and in the New Testament and what responsibility Christians bear in challenging it. – What kind of Christology (big fancy theological word for “understanding Jesus”) undergirds Jesus Christ Superstar, and whether there's any good news in this musical.   You'll hear: – Ian Gillan, Murray Head, Yvonne Elliman and the cast of the Original Studio Recording (a.k.a. “The Brown Album”) from 1970. – "Could Ye Not Watch With Me One Hour?" from John Stainer's Crucifixion sung by the St. Michael Singers (Fox Records, 2009). – Joshua Mostel singing "Herod's Song" from the 1973 Original Motion Picture Soundtrack.   Continue the conversation with Peter (@pgeinvan) and Nathan (@nathan_lerud) on Twitter, and follow the Gospel of Musical Theatre on Instagram or Twitter @gospelofmt!

A witty English drama from John Schlesinger about an unusual triangle: a man and a woman both in love with the same man. John Schlesinger was part of an exciting generation of young English directors that emerged in the 1960s. He established himself with several successful films, and this gave him the opportunity to break all the rules by making Midnight Cowboy, which became a huge hit. After this triumph, Schlesinger had earned the right to do his own thing—and next he created a more personal film, a story he'd been thinking about for years. Released in 1971, it's called Sunday Bloody Sunday. The title, by the way, doesn't refer to the famous event in Northern Ireland, or the song by U2 about it, which all came later. Here it's just from a common male expression in England at that time, a weary shrug on a Sunday about having to go back to work or school the next day. The story is infused with this ironic tone—the style of someone who observes people with a compassionate but honest eye. In London, Daniel, a Jewish doctor (Peter Finch) and Alex, a divorced mother (Glenda Jackson), are both in love with the same man—a bisexual artist named Bob, played by Murray Head. The story covers ten days in these three people's lives, in which their love for and patience with one another are sorely tried. Schlesinger deftly sidesteps the social drama angle, keeping the focus on private feelings and desires. The picture pays careful attention to the little incidents that make up a day—it has a refreshing natural rhythm. Everything that happens is colored by the longings of Daniel and Alex. Bob is their happiness, and sometimes they are indeed happy when he’s with them, but he’s also an elusive object, a source of anxiety: Will he leave? Will he run to the other one? It’s written like a modern short story, where plot takes a back seat to permutations of feeling. There’s something remarkably clear-eyed about the movie—the emotions of the characters are real and moving, yet there’s a humorous bite and distance—nothing maudlin, very crisp and even a bit cold. When Peter Finch and Murray Head do a full mouth kiss in close-up early in the film, I believe that was some sort of a cinematic first. I don’t doubt that it was intended to surprise—in plot terms alone, it’s a way to suddenly let us know that Daniel and Bob are lovers. But what I find admirable is that gay sexuality is not sensationalized, it's simply an important element of Daniel’s character, and it is taken for granted as a fact in itself—which for 1971 was more than ahead of its time, it was beyond its time. Finch is marvelous, conveying quiet dignity along with a childlike neediness and petulance—never pathetic, just a bit lost and sad. A sequence at a bar mitzvah is priceless, with all his pushy female relatives trying to hook him up with a woman. It says more about what Daniel’s growing up must have been like than any number of flashbacks could have done. Glenda Jackson is also fine here, very natural and high-spirited. And Murray Head is certainly attractive as Bob, although I couldn't help but think: what do they see in him? Sunday Bloody Sunday is a thoroughly enjoyable example of early ‘70s spirit.

Murray Head was suddenly thrust into the limelight in 1971 as he played the love interest for Peter Finch and Glenda Jackson's characters in the film Sunday Bloody Sunday. He had the role of a young bisexual man involved in an open love triangle with a gay Jewish doctor and a middle aged divorcee. The film saw a kiss between two men, only a few years after male homosexuality had been decriminalized in England and Wales.  The movie was ground breaking and is still one of the few that has ever really tacked bisexuality. But did it do bisexual people justice? Could it have gone further? Murray turns the clock back more than 50 years to remember exactly how it all happened. He also touches on his musical career, musicals - and his other films including working with Hayley Mills and the late Hywell Bennett. If you'd like to suggest an interview (or reunion) with a past star/stars of any soap, comedy, drama. children's series, quiz show or film, then please drop us a line via the contact us page on the Distinct Nostalgia website at www.distinctnostalgia.com or email info@madeinmanchester.tvDistinct Nostalgia is a Made in Manchester Production.NOTE: The Distinct Nostalgia theme is owned by MIM Productions and composed by Rebecca Applin and Chris Warner. Support the show (https://www.patreon.com/distinctnostalgia)

Cold war chess matches and show tunes collide in "One Night in Bangkok" by Murray Head. The song went to number one in many countries and topped out at #3 in May 1985 in the U.S. and Canada. The song was a single from the concept album “Chess” by Benny Andersson and Bjorn Ulvaeus of ABBA (and Mama Mia fame) with lyrics by Tim Rice. It later became a musical, starring Murray Head.   In the musical, Head plays “Freddie Trumper,” an American Chess master who is in Thailand to face off against his opponent from the USSR in a big chess match. If that sounds familiar, it's because it was inspired by the 1972 Bobby Fischer/Boris Spassky match in Reykjavik. In the song, Trumper is trying to stay focused on the match and not succumb to Bangkok's many distractions. Listening to it with 2021 ears, it's hard to miss the transphobic overtones or the way it hypersexualizes Asian women. If you were transfixed by the flute solo, you may have missed all that in 1985, but the Thai government didn't. Check out the video.Note, this song is not to be confused with Musical Chess by Burger King Illuminati.
