Three Chords and the Truth: The Apologetics Podcast
Apatheism, Mormonism, and Theological Shoegazing, with Kyle Beshears

Three Chords and the Truth: The Apologetics Podcast

Welcome to the Apathetic Episode of The Apologetics Podcast! An episode focused on apathy probably seems appropriate to all of you who have noticed how apathetic Garrick and Timothy have been about releasing new episodes for the past few months. But that wasn't actually due to anyone's apathy! It was because Timothy needed to finish writing a new apologetics book entitled In Church as It Is in Heaven, which InterVarsity Press will release in June 2023.  Now that the book manuscript is in the publisher's hands, the Apologetics Podcast is back and better and more apathetic than ever! Despite this exciting return of new episodes, the dynamic duo refuses to get excited. This is, after all, the Apathetic Episode, which requires them to remain apathetic. This episode's installment of the Raiders of Church History begins with a piece of fruit. In a moment so apathetic that it's almost pathetic, Timothy tosses his pear at a dead head, resulting in a dull draw that makes staring at sleeping rocks seem exciting. The apathy continues when Kyle Beshears reveals that his favorite rock group is Starflyer 59, a shoegaze band that barely qualifies as a rock band at all and happens to be the undisputed master of maudlin and apathetic music. But Starflyer 59 is far from the most apathetic aspect of this Apathetic Episode, because there is only one person in the universe more passionately committed to apathy than Garrick and Timothy, and that's Kyle Beshears. The topic of their discussion is “apatheism,” a term that theology professor Robert Nash coined in 2001 to describe people so apathetic that they don't care whether or not God exists. Garrick and Kyle momentarily threaten the apathy of this episode when they begin talking about Mormonism and start to become almost excited. That's when Timothy bravely but apathetically intervenes to restore the high levels of apathy for which this episode is destined to become famous. ABOUT YOUR HOSTS Timothy Paul Jones, Ph.D., is C. I'm talking to one of my heroes on this episode. And one of the voices that introduced me to indie music, and in turn someone who set me up for the life I've lived since my early teenage years. If you're of an age – my age – broadcaster, TV presenter and DJ, and a whole lot more besides, Gary Crowley, was the UK's voice of indie for a time, and since he's put his name to an excellent new compilation record – Gary Crowley's Indie 90s Playback, a 3CD set that takes in curios and rarities from the realms of Britpop, Madchester, Baggy, Shoegazing, Alt. rock, Trip Hop, Big Beat, and a whole lot more besides, I thought it was about time I got him on the podcast. And we go deep – on Gary's early days making fanzines, his teenage encounters with The Clash, his days at Decca Records, breaking into radio at Capital, replacing Danny Baker on the receptionists desk at my beloved NME… and we'd have gone even longer if we hadn't ran out of time. Which means there'll almost certainly be a second episode, sometime in the New Year. We ran out of time before we could get into The Beat, XFM and breaking the news of Princess Diana's death to a generation of indie kids. Keep your ears pealed for that. But for now, I hope you enjoy this episode… Join the Substack!

"Beach House" are a dream-pop duo formed in 2004 by singer/keyboardist Victoria Legrand and guitarist/keyboardist Alex Scally. The duo came together over a mutual interest in similar musical tastes, with influences ranging from Neil Young to Brian Wilson of The Beach Boys. At the time Victoria was already in a band and recruited Alex to play bass, but the project became frustrating for Victoria since it wasn't going anywhere. It wasn't long before Alex suggested that the pair split from the band and do their own thing. They started writing songs and despite not specifically trying to achieve a "dream-pop" sound, it was a genre that could easily be labelled on the music they were writing together. Their first self-titled 2006 release was the result of just 2 days of recording on a 4 track recorder in Alex's basement studio.Since those early days the duo have gone on to put out 7 studio albums and tour the world.Join Jay and Jesse as they explore the sonic world of "Beach House"."Roots to Grooves" is a production of SIGNL.https://www.signlradio.comhttps://www.instagram.com/signlradiohttps://www.twitter.com/signlradiohttps://www.facebook.com/signlradiohttps://www.mixcloud.com/signlhttps://open.spotify.com/user/96mhz6qfjoztxbl2dpm0uj903?si=aAZpsoEnRAKdx85kr1QWhg

He has a reputation of being very service-minded, going that extra length to make both the process and the final products something special for the clients. We talked a lot on the customer experience topic, but also about for example his journey into shoemaking, about pros and cons with traditional British ways of doing bespoke fittings, about Covid and what a mess it has made of the bespoke footwear and clothing worlds in many regards, and much more.

It's completely possible that Jesper Ingevaldsson knows more about shoes than anyone alive. Jesper IS Shoegazing, the seminal and just monumentally good blog covering quality footwear, mostly in the classic dress category. Over the past decade he's taken a keen journalistic eye and an endless sense of curiosity, and educated millions on shoe construction and finishing while also presenting a razor-sharp review of the industry at large. The thing that I love most about Jesper is that he knows his stuff in a way few do in any field—and yet he's not someone who sees his personally preferred, dressier lane as the only correct course for a shoe-lover. His appreciation of all quality footwear is beyond evident as we get into the crossover between his nerdy world and Stitchdown's: why aren't more people in his wintry home nation of Sweden wearing more rugged boots? (Well luckily they're starting to, actually...) What is and isn't truly "handmade," how should brands market their products honestly, and what do we need to understand as customers? Why are we all so obsessed with buying shoes and boots on sale when it threatens the very existence of the makers we so dearly love?  Why do we buy four or five pairs of expensive footwear that don't get worn enough when one bespoke pair might be the thing that we really need? These questions and plenty more we discuss—including the correct pronunciation of Swedish shoe store Skoaktiebolaget—are relevant to everyone who loves any kinds of welted shoes. And Jesper's episode is an absolute must-listen. This episode was sponsored by Standard & Strange, where you don't NEED an engineering degree to buy their engineer boots...but it helps.Theme music: The Road by Punk Rock Opera

Basically you listeners and readers of Shoegazing.com get to ask questions to some famous names from the classic shoe industry. This round is with Daniel Wegan, the Swede who made a name of himself working at the bespoke department of Gaziano & Girling in England for ten years. He placed second in the World Championships in Shoemaking 2018, and then won the title in 2019. Last year he left G&G to start his own bespoke brand, Catella Shoemaker. In this Q&A Special though, it’s you who have decided the topics. A big thanks to all who sent in questions, couldn’t fit in all, but we got a lot covered in the near hour we talked, among other things Daniel’s view on the current boom of more casual footwear and how he thinks this will affect his business, a breakdown on why bespoke shoes cost so much, about preventing work-related injuries as a shoemaker, how he works with the bottom of the lasts, why he is often wearing cheap New Balance shoes himself, and much more. For this episode I met Takashi Fukuda, who is a legendary buyer at the department store Isetan Men’s in Tokyo. For many years he has been the head buyer at their shoe department, and has been highly influential on what will be found on the shoe shelves at Isetan Men’s. Isetan is a Japanese chain of department stores, with it’s huge flagship store in Shinjuku in central Tokyo. There they have one building dedicated to women’s fashion and more, and one whole building with only men’s clothing and accessories. The shoe department of Isetan Men’s is likely the largest one in the world when it comes to quality shoes. It is an incredible place for shoe lovers, with everything from low-end Blake stitched shoes up to some of the best bespoke shoes in the world, and everything in between. I usually travel to Japan and Tokyo once a year, and the first day I arrive I always head directly to Isetan Men’s to browse the shelves and to see what’s new since my last visit. For makers of quality shoes, not just Japanese but from all over the world, Isetan Men’s is the single most prestigious store to be represented at. They have a huge impact on what will be popular among the Japanese, which together with the US is the largest market for quality shoes there is. And since other stores and shoe agencies from around the world always have an eye at Isetan Men’s, what is found here often quickly get traction also in Europe, the US and elsewhere as well. So, I sat down to talk with Takashi Fukuda about the impact that Isetan Men’s has had on the shoe industry in Japan, and abroad, how they work when bringing in new brands, and how they are going to keep its relevance in the increasingly digital world. Takashi Fukuda isn’t the best English speaker, hope for leniency, but I’m sure you’ll find it a good listen anyway.

This episode was recorded at the Micam shoe fair in Milan, Italy, back in February. In this episode we’re meeting Jonathan Church, one of the owners of the British firm Cheaney & Sons. Jonathan has worked in the footwear industry for three decades, first in the firm bearing his family name, Church’s, later with Cheaney. Cheaney was one of the last Northampton based shoe factories to transcend from focusing on Private Label to sell shoes under their own name, which they did after Jonathan and his cousin William Church acquired the company in 2009. It has resulted in a massive increase in both turnover and profits. Our talk focus around this topic, but we also talk about his experience of the Prada takeover of Church’s, and about Brexit.

This time you will meet Robin Chang, founder of the leading quality shoe store in Taiwan, Oak Room, located in the capital Taipei. He has been involved in the shoe business for many years, and is considered one of the foremost experts on the classic shoe industry in Asia. In this episode we will focus on the situation for factories making classic quality shoes as well as bespoke shoemakers in Asia, outside of Japan. It’s a topic that many in Europe or the US know very little of. Things are happening quickly in this part of the world, and this industry has come further than many believe. We will talk about how China has already moved away from being a low cost production country for shoes, nowadays it’s countries like Laos and Vietnam where manufacturing of quality shoes is growing the quickest. This has meant that we now see a lot of new Chinese independent shoemakers making fully handmade shoes, raised in a shoe industry that in parts have moved on, and now thanks to social media they can reach customers themselves. We also talk about for example how the very affordable, often very well-made Asian made quality shoes will be pushing European manufacturers, as they come into play as proper competition, we will go into the situation with customers in the domestic countries, and much, much more. You have a very informative half an hour in front of you, enjoy!

请访问 itgonglun.com/member。 Google’s approach with Chrome is different. Rather than removing features from existing web browsers, Google has taken its brightly colored forearm and swept the table absolutely clean. Forget about menu separators; why even have a bookmarks menu? Hell, why have a menu bar at all? Start with nothing. Assume nothing. Add features only as needed, and only in service of a well-defined design concept. That’s what’s most exciting about Chrome: not the individual features Google has added, not the most prominent aspects of its user interface, such as the top-mounted tabs. All of that stuff will be tried and tested in the market. But the approach, the philosophy, the sheer chutzpah on display…that is a thing of beauty. 2009 年的〈The Once and Future e-book: on Reading in the Digital Age〉很可能是 Siracusa 最被忽略的力作。 Let me leave you with a quote from another Peanut Press founder, one which reflects his not-entirely unfounded optimism about the subtle seduction of e-books: “You know what we call people who finally try e-books after they’ve sworn they could never read on a handheld device? ‘Customers.’” It happened to me; it could happen to you. I hope it does, because the future of e-books has been a long time coming. I just hope it gets here soon. 1992 年的电影《Singles》?Beastie Boys 的《Sabotage》歌词?〈Straight out of Compton〉是 Hip-Hop 乐团 N.W.A. 在 1988 年发表的一张专辑名称,文中最后一句「Tell ‘em where you’re from」也来自同名歌曲。 They released their debut self-titled album a couple of years ago to much critical acclaim. That record was very much rooted in the 80s, with elements of post-punk, dream pop, twee, and the C86 sound. It was a very saccharine heart-on-the-sleeve album, but balanced those elements with some darker tones and distortion. The sophomore album, Belong out on Slumberland Records, builds on the first album's elements and takes them further with a BIG and slick wall of sound production style, courtesy of Flood and Alan Moulder (Smashing Pumpkins, My Bloody Valentine, Depeche Mode). The overall sound of this album is early 90s guitar pop-rock, though there are some synth-washed tracks that recall Modern English and The Cure. Sometimes the Spring season isn't as bright and cheery as it's supposed to be and post-winter seasonal depression kicks in. This angsty, psychedelia-tinged, shoegazing reverie of a show attempts to touch on that feeling, as well as the bi-polarity inherent in the start-stop-start-stop-again crawl of springtime, and the apprehension that sometimes accompanies the new beginnings, growth, and rebirth that occur during this time of the year. Plus, there are several tracks referencing the gaseous and incendiary sphere that we orbit, all the while knowing it will one day collapse and take everything with it.Beat City Radio #578 PLAYLISTStream:   Download show (right-click, save target as):Beat City Radio #578 - March 22, 2011 Bonus mp3s:Crystal Stilts - Flying Into the Sun  from In Love With Oblivion which drops April 12.  Source: Woodstock Council for World PeaceI'm back from my spring holiday and feel quite refreshed and ready to get back to work. We have implemented a new playlist reporting method at KISU, and it's kind of time consuming, so I think I'll just start linking to the playlist entries over there. We'll still post podcasts, mp3s, videos, and the like at this we location. Also, check out the widget on the top right-hand corner of the page. It's an indicator of what's live on KISU at the moment, and if you're streaming Beat City Radio live, you'll see a list of the last four songs played on the show and the times they started. Kinda neat, aye? This edition of the show aired the day after the 2011 Spring Equinox and some of the songs are a tad icy and crushing.BCR 3-21-11 PLAYLISTDownload (right-click, save target as): Beat City Radio March 21, 2011Stream:

Robin Pecknold of Fleet Foxes. Source: WikipediaThis show features the Three Songs EP from hirsute Baroque-folker Robin Pecknold, better known as the frontman of Seattle's Fleet Foxes. The EP was somewhat clandestinely released via Fleet Foxes' Twitter account on March 7. The tracks should help sate the appetite of fans anxiously awaiting the sophomore record from the band, which is slated for release on May 3. Though Pecknold (and his amazing set of pipes) are behind these tracks, they're quieter and less layered than full band tracks. I'm particularly fond of the first cut featuring Ed Droste of Grizzly Bear. Download the EP below and enjoy with your favorite amber-colored libation.Robin Pecknold - I'm Losing Myself feat. Take care, Holger & Jorgo www.poese-puben.de
