Allow yourself to be immersed in the escapist sounds of dream pop. A genre originally from the 80s combining influences from the psychedelic 60s era with a whole new soundscape, this genre is as weird as it is mystical, magical and often beautiful. The experimentation with sonic textures with reverb, echo, effects pedals as well as whimsical, operatic or breathy vocals from bands like the Cocteau Twins, This Mortal Coil and A.R. Kane would inspire some popular indie bands that we know and love today.

We're about to get all dreamy and floaty and all blissed out by taking a look at another specific genre…a post-punk genre called “dream pop”…it's a thing unto itself but it's also related to other genres where atmosphere, sonic textures, and (in some cases) sheer volume reign supreme…and from its origins in the early 80s, dream pop has had a profound effect on music that is felt even today. It touches on and overlaps with other alt-rock subgenres including shoegaze and anything resembling modern psychedelic material…it has a volume continuum that ranges from barely-there softness to somewhere beyond a jet engine…but at the same time, it never loses touch with melody. So, complicated stuff—and i haven't even mentioned vocal styles, guitar effects, production methods, and all the other goodness that goes into making something dreamy—or in extreme cases, nightmarish.

Paul sits down with Danish producer and musician Anders Trentemøller, unpacking his journey from early electronic EPs to the lush, melancholic soundscapes of his latest album, "Dreamweaver." Anders opens up about his creative process, the emotional depth of his music, and even the quirks of writing lyrics in a language that's not his own.We also touch on the delicate balance between creativity and constraints. Anders shares how setting artistic boundaries can actually ignite innovation, and contrast the introspective solitude of studio work with the energy of live performance. We dive into the struggles of writer's block and the importance of receiving constructive feedback, all while emphasizing the joy that comes from evolving a piece of music with trusted collaborators. Anders has gone from bedroom producer to international success and we dive into one of his key moments with the seminal album, "The Last Resort."Finally, we explore how childhood influences and early musical experiences shape our paths. We also get a peek into his collaborative spirit, whether working with musicians like Rachel Goswell of Slowdive or navigating the complexities of evolving musical styles.Dreamweaver, Trentemøller's 7th studio album is out now, find out more here.Follow Paul Hanford on InstagramLost and Sound is sponsored by Audio-TechnicaPaul's BBC World Service radio documentary “The man who smuggled punk rock across the Berlin Wall” is available now on BBC Sounds.
