The Pirates Are Betting Big on a Dangerous Catcher Room

On today's OffBeat with Alex Stumpf, Alex digs into one of the biggest unanswered questions on the Pirates roster: catcher. Even after an aggressive offseason, Pittsburgh didn't address a position that remains loaded with uncertainty. Alex breaks down why Joey Bart may be the safest option in the room, why Henry Davis still has real upside despite the offensive concerns, why Endy Rodriguez remains one of the biggest wild cards on the roster, and why Rafael Flores is intriguing but still far from a sure thing. This episode gets into the floor vs. ceiling debate, what the Pirates need from Bart offensively, and why this entire position group could swing from weakness to strength depending on how a few major questions are answered. Paul Skenes took the mound on the international stage and gave Team USA exactly what it needed in a 2-1 win over the Dominican Republic, and now we've got plenty to dig into on Bucco Brew. We're breaking down Skenes' outing, what stood out from his 4.1 innings, and what it meant to watch Oneil Cruz and Gregory Soto on the other side of a game that felt loaded with Pirates ties. We'll also touch on David Bednar's scoreless inning and the bigger picture of how Pirates players and former Pirates showed up in a massive WBC moment. Then we shift back to Bradenton, where the fifth starter battle keeps getting more interesting. Jose Urquidy had a rough day, Mike Clevinger is somehow still in the mix, Hunter Barco continues to make his case, and Carmen Mlodzinski is becoming harder and harder to ignore. After Alex Stumpf's recent breakdown on Off Beat, is Carmen starting to feel like the real answer? *Get your tickets to the April 18th game in the NS9 Group: https://www.gofevo.com/event/Northshore9tailgate0418 Use Promo Code NS930 for 30% off your first order at https://www.defer.coffee Use Promo Code NS9 for 30% off your first order at https://www.gritily.com Use Promo Code NORTHSHORENINE for $20 off your first order at https://www.seatgeek.com LIKE and SUBSCRIBE with NOTIFICATIONS ON if you enjoyed the show! Jim is bringing out the Jimalytics to break down every spot on the roster - catchers, infielders, outfielders, starting pitchers, and relievers - using spreadsheets and logic to decide who's making the trip north and who could be left on the outside looking in. Before that, we'll welcome Alex Stumpf back to the show to tease the launch of his brand-new North Shore Nine weekday podcast, Off Beat with Alex Stumpf, which officially debuts tomorrow. Alex's new show will deliver a quick, beat-writer-style Pirates perspective every weekday in a 15-minute format, and while he's with us, we'll talk a little Pirates ball as well. The new show will bring Pirates fans a fresh daily perspective straight from the ballpark, with Alex delivering reactions, insights, and observations from around the team in a quick, easy-to-listen-to format. Episodes are expected to run around 15 minutes, giving listeners a shorter daily option to fit into their routine while still staying informed on everything happening with the Pirates. During our announcement podcast, Alex said the goal is to make Off Beat part of a Pirates fan's regular day, offering a mix of immediate reactions and informed analysis from someone who is around the team on a daily basis. That is exactly why we are so excited to bring him to North Shore Nine. At NS9, we have always been proud to offer a fan-driven perspective through our live shows, postgame coverage, and podcasts. NA-LEEF gedagte | As-Woensdag — 'n off-beat ritueel

. . Na-leef gedagte: As-Woensdag — 'n off-beat ritueel deur Pieter Roeloffse “Jesus is an alternative to the dominant ways of the world,  not a supplement to them.”

Japan's political scene is changing—from new parties rising in visibility to historic moments in national leadership—so the Krewe is bringing you a timely crash course. Political analyst Tobias Harris (Founder & Principal of Japan Foresight) joins the pod to break down the foundations of Japan's government system, how it compares to the U.S., and why voters view politics the way they do. We explore the major and emerging parties shaping the landscape, the issues driving debate today, and how international pressures and global events influence domestic policy. Tobias also sheds light on the media's role in shaping public perception and political accountability.------ About the Krewe ------The Krewe of Japan Podcast is a weekly episodic podcast sponsored by the Japan Society of New Orleans. Hey Slackers, we're taking a fun detour this episode!Longtime listeners know I was a die-hard hair band and metal fan back in the '80s, which, let's be honest, made me a bit of a genre snob. Looking back, I realize I missed out on a ton of incredible music from that decade.Inspired by my son's request for a fresh playlist, I decided to step outside my usual rock, metal, punk, and emo comfort zone. Instead, I dove into the vibrant world of synth-pop, new wave, EDM, and alt-rock, curating a collection of tracks spanning 1980 to 1989. These are songs that lit up the charts or defined the underground scene—definitely not my typical picks! From the moody brilliance of Joy Division to the raw energy of the Pixies, I've crafted what I'm calling an "Offbeat '80s" playlist. But I need your help to make it even better! Early Gen Xers, 120 Minutes devotees, and alternative music lovers—hit me up with your must-have tracks to round out this out. What gems am I missing? Let's build this playlist together!

Becky, Obviously: Becky Albertalli on Bullies, Bodies and Breaking Through

“There were kind of always like two simultaneous stories happening with my coming out. One was the realization and breaking through some of that denial and repression, seeing kind of what was right there in front of me, and I gave that story to Imogen.” – Becky AlbertalliWhat if there were two stories running through your life: the one you're telling the world, and the one you haven't even admitted to yourself? That's the kind of truth Becky Albertalli explores in her writing, and that she's lived in her own life. Becky is the bestselling author of Simon vs. the Homo Sapiens Agenda, Leah on the Offbeat, Imogen, Obviously, and many more. Her books capture the awkward, earnest, messy work of figuring out who you are–and remind us that coming out, growing up, and becoming yourself rarely happen all at once. In this episode, Becky opens up about growing up and fitting (or not fitting) in a conservative suburb, finding refuge in theater, and The Babysitters Club. She also reflects on how writing helped her work through parts of herself she hadn't yet named, discusses why queer-coming-of-age stories still matter, and reminds us of the power of Rent. ***For her reading challenge, Queer Coming of Age Stories, Becky has curated a list packed with queer stories, identity shifts, big feelings, and characters trying to make sense of themselves, one awkward moment at a time.Peruse selected titles and Becky's complete reading challenge for free at thereadingculturepod.com/becky-albertalli.This week's Beanstack Featured Librarian is Kelly Shelton, an elementary librarian for Garland ISD in Garland, Texas. She's been an educator for 26 years, and in the library for nearly a decade. She shares how unlocking a love of reading can start with dinosaurs, Dog Man, or a well-timed Taylor Swift Break. Show ChaptersChapter 1: Georgia PeachChapter 2: I Hate School, But I'm Very Good At ItChapter 3: Proud Member of the Babysitter's ClubChapter 4: The Year of Secret AssignmentsChapter 5: Hindsight 20/20Chapter 6: Best Friends ForeverChapter 7: Reading ChallengeChapter 8: Beanstack Featured LibrarianLinksThe Reading CultureThe Reading Culture Newsletter SignupFollow The Reading Culture on Instagram (for giveaways and bonus content)Becky AlbertalliBecky Albertalli InstagramLove, Simon filmThe Babysitters Club ScholasticThe Babysitters Club Netflix seriesRent musicalThe Year of Secret AssignmentsWesleyan UniversityBeanstack resources to build your community's reading cultureJordan Lloyd BookeyHost and Production CreditsHost: Jordan Lloyd BookeyProducers: Mel Webb and Lower Street MediaScript Editors: Josia Lamberto-Egan, Mel Webb, Jordan Lloyd Bookey

In “Off Beat,” Pastor Robert Madu reminds us that God has a rhythm and it includes rest. Drawing from Exodus 16, he shares that the Sabbath isn't just a necessary break but an act of trust in God's provision. Once you recognize God's beat, it's your responsibility to get in sync. This happens by realizing rest isn't a reward, its a gift from God that's available now. Thank you for partnering with Social Dallas! Reading projects take all shapes and sizes, and today's guest has set a goal to read all the Women's Prize for Fiction shortlists and winners. Today, Anne is talking books with Kathryn, who lives on the island of Okinawa, Japan, with her military husband and energetic golden retriever. Kathryn works for a nonprofit and spends her leisure time reading, knitting, or walking on the beach close to their home. Since Kathryn's project is an ambitious one, she's come up with a strategy of reading one year at a time, though not necessarily in chronological order. Today she and Anne talk about which years or titles she may want to bump to the top of her read-next list. They also touch on reading project fatigue and ways Kathryn can truly enjoy the process of reaching her reading goal. Find the list of titles mentioned today and share your reading and project recommendations for Kathryn by leaving a comment over at whatshouldireadnextpodcast.com/476.
