Nhân một cuộc phỏng vấn gần đây trên kênh truyền hình RTL, Gerard Joling cho biết là tính đến nay anh đã bán được hơn 30 triệu đĩa nhạc, trong đó có một nửa là nhờ vào thành công trên các thị trường châu Á từ cuối những năm 1980.  Song song với nghề ca hát, Gerard Joling càng thêm nổi tiếng một thập niên sau đó nhờ dẫn nhiều show truyền hình, hay làm giám khảo trong các cuộc thi tuyển lựa tài năng mới như « Popstars », Giọng ca hay nhất Hà Lan « The Voice Senior of Holland » hay Ca sĩ mặt nạ « The Masked Singer » …Ban đầu khởi nghiệp hát solo, ông còn nổi tiếng nhờ hợp tac với nhiều tên tuổi khác trong làng giải trí : trong đó thành công nhất vẫn là ban nhạc De Toppers được thành lập lần đầu tiên vào năm 2005, cách đây vừa đúng hai thập niên.  Khi Gerard Joling hợp tác với hai ca sĩ trứ danh khác là René Froger và Gordon Heuckeroth, kế hoạch ban đầu của họ là tổ chức một đêm nhạc chủ đề với những ca khúc nổi tiếng, ba ca sĩ hát luân phiên, tiếp sức cho nhau và thường chỉ biểu diễn một lần duy nhất trên sân vận động. Thế nhưng trước sự thành công vang dội, vượt ngoài mọi dự đoán, nhóm De Toppers tổ chức biểu diễn ở quy mô lớn thường xuyên hơn.  Các đêm nhạc của họ trở thành điểm hẹn hàng năm của giới yêu nhạc nhẹ. Đội hình của nhóm đã thay đổi sau hai thập niên hoạt động và hiện bao gồm Gerard Joling, René Froger, Jeroen Van Der Boom và Jan Smit, chứ không còn có sự tham gia của Gordon Heuckeroth.
