On December 17, 1998, a 39 year old prominent clinical geneticist at the Baylor College of Medicine in West University Place, Texas, is raped, stabbed, and bludgeoned to death at her home by an intruder. When investigators find the victim's Jeep Cherokee in San Antonio, a stranger's fingerprints are on the steering column. It wouldn't be until at least six month later, in June 1999, that law enforcement would apprehend the killer. Tragically, by this stage he'd killed another six people across two states. But the body count was far greater than anyone initially realised. In episode 212, Jac and Alexis detail the disturbing case of Angel Resendiz, a violent offender who became known as the Railroad Killer, and struck terror into the hearts of railroad communities across Florida, Kentucky, Texas, Georgia, IIlinois, and as far west as California.

On a morally conscious episode of After Hours AM/The Criminal Code — with hosts Joel Sturgis, Eric Olsen and our secret weapon, forensic psychologist Dr. Clarissa Cole — we talk murderabilia and victim’s right’s with Houston victim’s advocate Andy Kahan. We speak with Andy in the hour 2; In hour 1 we talk the week’s freaky True Crime news and banter amiably. Andy Kahan, victim advocate for the city of Houston, has spent more than 20 years working against the sale of “murderabilia,” a term he coined for any items that have market value because of their connection to a murderer. Letters and artwork make up the bulk of murderabilia sales, but available items range from an unused paper towel (“guaranteed authentic”) that belonged to Charles Manson to the flaked-off foot skin of Angel Resendiz, “The Railway Killer.” Kahan believes murderabilia glorifies violent crime and causes the loved ones of victims undue pain. murderabiliaEight states have “notoriety-for-profit” laws, which prohibit criminals from making money from their crimes, but visitors to the Serial Killer Ink website can buy digital recordings of Charles Manson, the 243-page confession of Jeffrey Dahmer and — recently added — a painting signed by Craigslist killer Richard Beasley. Kahan, whose self-appointed side job is tracking and calling attention to murderabilia, notified the Akron Beacon Journal recently when he saw the Beasley painting on Serial Killer Ink, one of several sites that he regularly checks. He said he hopes to persuade Ohio to take this step when he talks about murderabilia at an Ohio attorney general’s conference for victim advocates in mid-May. “Frankly, your state’s in dire need,” Kahan said of these notoriety laws, noting that Ohio is among the states with the most serial killers with items for sale online. Kahan pointed to online items tied to Anthony Sowell, who was sentenced
