In this episode, Akron Beacon Journal film critic George Thomas breaks down the latest in cinema and streaming with his signature sharp eye and honest takes. The spotlight is on Marvel's "Thunderbolts", directed by Jake Schreier, which Thomas praises for breaking the typical Marvel mold. Unlike the usual formulaic blockbusters, Thunderbolts leans into a darker tone, delivers unexpected action, and features a stellar ensemble including Florence Pugh, Sebastian Stan, Hannah John-Kamen, and David Harbour. Thomas gives the film a solid B+, noting its potential to reshape expectations for the Marvel Cinematic Universe's next phase.Next, the conversation turns to “A Simple Favor 2”, the sequel to the stylish 2018 thriller. Unfortunately, Thomas finds it lacking the spark of its predecessor, calling it disappointing and uninspired, failing to live up to its potential despite returning stars and a promising setup.Switching gears, George discusses the strong box office performance of “Creed III”, which is nearing profitability and continuing the legacy of the franchise with a fresh directorial perspective from Michael B. Jordan. For fans of creative storytelling, Thomas highly recommends season two of Nathan Fielder's “The Rehearsal” on HBO Max. He calls it one of the most innovative shows on television, blending satire, emotional depth, and surreal humor in ways few shows attempt. The second season, according to Thomas, expands the format while remaining deeply insightful about human nature and performance.Whether you're looking for superhero grit, a streaming gem, or a movie to skip, George Thomas offers a thoughtful guide through the week's entertainment headlines.

Join George Thomas, the acclaimed film critic from the Akron Beacon Journal, as he dives deep into two of the most exciting new movie releases in this in-depth podcast review. In today's episode, George unpacks the thrills, twists, and cinematic nuances of two contrasting films that are making waves on the big screen and streaming platforms.Novocaine Movie Review – A Unique Premise with a C+ RatingGeorge kicks off his review with Novocaine, an action-packed adventure that stars Jack Quaid as a man with a rare condition—he cannot feel pain. This extraordinary premise sets the stage for a high-octane journey where physical invulnerability meets a world of dangerous exploits. George explores how the film leverages this unique concept to deliver exhilarating action sequences and edge-of-your-seat moments. However, while the film's storyline is inventive and packed with adrenaline, George notes that its character development and pacing leave something to be desired. Ultimately, Novocaine earns a C+ rating from George—a nod to its bold ideas tempered by narrative shortcomings. If you're a fan of offbeat action-adventures that push genre boundaries, this film offers plenty of entertainment, even if it might not become a lasting classic.Black Bag Movie Review – A Must-See Spy Thriller with an A- RatingNext, George shifts gears to review Black Bag, a taut and dialogue-driven spy thriller helmed by legendary director Steven Soderbergh. Starring powerhouse performances from Michael Fassbender and Cate Blanchett, Black Bag is a masterclass in suspense and cinematic storytelling. George delves into the film's intricate screenplay, praising its clever plot twists and sharp dialogue that keep you guessing at every turn. With its atmospheric tension and sophisticated narrative, Black Bag is awarded an A- rating—a testament to its quality and the skillful direction of Soderbergh. The review also highlights how the film fits into Soderbergh's storied career, drawing interesting comparisons with other auteurs like Darren Aronofsky, and underlining the director's ability to craft films that both entertain and provoke thoughtful reflection.Additional Movie Mentions: Mickey 17 & Dope ThiefIn this episode, George doesn't stop at just two films. He also offers brief insights into Mickey 17 and the new Apple TV+ series Dope Thief, adding them to the ever-growing list of fresh, innovative releases capturing the attention of cinephiles. Whether it's the buzz surrounding these projects or their unique storytelling approaches, George's quick mentions ensure you're updated on all the latest cinematic happenings.About George Thomas – Your Trusted Film CriticWith years of experience in film criticism at the Akron Beacon Journal, George Thomas brings a wealth of knowledge, insight, and passion to every review. In the early morning hours of June 2, 2009 a thunderstorm broke the constant quiet that existed in the Amish community of Apple Creek, OH. Inside the well kept two story white house the occupants slept fretfully because of the storm. What they did not know was that the loud noises outside were nothing compared to the danger that had sneaked its way inside. A figure walked its way through the unlocked house and down the hall to the main bedroom. They readied themselves to shoot the rifle they had brought with them. Temporarily they were illuminated by a bright flash of lighting and as a thunderclap roared its way through the house they fired the gun. The children slept on none the wiser that their lives had just been shattered by the murder of their mother.  Sources: Olsen, Gregg, and Rebecca Morris. After all, she knew a family member who was scared straight by a stint in a juvenile detention facility and went on to have a successful family and career. Tyler was to be sentenced on a breaking and entering charge in May of 2012; maybe this was lesson he needed to understand consequences. But Tyler never got the chance. He was gunned down the day before his hearing, and Akron police say they know exactly who did it. UNRESOLVED is collaboration between Ohio Mysteries and the Akron Beacon Journal. On the evening of October 6, 1898, forty-eight-year-old George Saxton, brother of First Lady Ida McKinley, was riding his bike to the home of his lady friend Eva Althouse when an assailant dressed in black emerged from the shadows and fired two shots. Wounded, George crawled towards Eva's house and had just reached the front steps when the shooter approached and fired two more shots, killing him almost instantly.Within hours of Saxton's death, his former mistress, Anna George, was arrested and charged with first-degree murder. For more than a decade, Saxton and George had been carrying on a scandalous relationship that began as an illicit affair until Saxton successfully convinced George to divorce her husband, supposedly with promises to marry her. However, once she was a single woman again, Saxton's enthusiasm for marriage had cooled and over time his interest in Anna waned. Anna George's sensational arrest and trial dominated headlines for months and, as Saxton was extremely unpopular, many people sympathized with the accused woman and even reveled in Saxton's death. After an intense and closely watched three-week trial, Anna George was acquitted of the murder and soon after she faded out of the spotlight, leaving the murder of George Saxton officially unsolved to this day.Thank you to the glorious David White, of the Bring Me The Axe Podcast, for research!ReferencesAkron Beacon Journal. 1906. Sheldon Ocker reflects on more than four decades of being a sportswriter in northeast Ohio with his customary wit and dry sense of humor. He takes into the clubhouse and behind the scenes during his 33 seasons of covering Major League Baseball in Cleveland for the Akron Beacon Journal. The Hall of Fame writer shares anecdotes from when the then-Indians were miserable in the 1980s and from when they morphed into memorable mashers in the '90s. Hear about the time Albert Belle raced Ocker in their rental cars, about Manny Ramirez asking him for a $60,000 loan, and about what pitch call Jose Mesa shook off in the ninth inning of Game 7 of the 1997 World Series. Sheldon also has some great tales from his 10 years of covering the NBA as a Cavaliers beat reporter in the 1970s. His story about a day spent with infamous Cavs owner Ted Stepien is one of the best we've heard in nearly 70 episodes.   Ocker was honored with the J.G. Taylor Spink Award for meritorious contributions to baseball writing. He was presented with that award in July 2018 at the National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum's induction in Cooperstown, N.Y. Besides his stellar reporting, Ocker was known for rarely taking a day off during a season when he covered baseball from 1981 until his retirement after the 2013 season. Sheldon was named the Ohio Sports Writer of the Year in 1997 and 2000 by the National Sportscasters and Sportswriters Association. He served as the president of the Baseball Writers' Assocation of America in 1985 and as chair of the Cleveland chapter 11 times. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Carol Costello is one the most authentic and trusted journalists in the modern era. Watching her conduct an interview is like a masterclass in how it should be done. Her warm and inviting presence always made her guests comfortable and willing, to tell the truth - no matter how difficult or sensitive the topic happens to be. I swear, she is either Wonder Woman in disguise or was gifted her very own "Lasso of Truth" by her. She's that good at getting real, truthful answers from whomever she might be interviewing. I've been a huge fan of Carol's for as long as I remember, and I still can't believe she said yes to come onto the show. She tells it like it is, and honestly, in a way we all need to hear it. Gosh, how I miss seeing her on television every day.  But she's creating even bigger RIpples today. Helping the next generation of journalists learn to think for themselves, question everything and pursue the facts, not simply strive for the likes, the views, or the notoriety. Why? Because journalists should never be part of the story. The good ones know how to tell it so that we understand and, hopefully, learn from it. To that end, I am grateful to know people like Carol are out there shaping the hearts and minds of our future journalists. Carol's Bio:   Carol Costello is an award-winning journalist and former anchor and correspondent at CNN and HLN. Her distinguished career as a local, regional, and national broadcaster spans three decades, covering a broad range of world leaders, events, and politics. Carol serves as Special Advisor and Ambassador at LMU and teaches a broadcast journalism course in LMU's journalism program. She also hosts “Carol Costello Presents: Blind Rage,” a true-crime serial podcast and “I Hate Your Generation,” a podcast series exploring the generational divide. In 2019, Carol created Project Citizen, a special program at LMU that provides resources and mentorship for student journalists. Project Citizen's core mission is to discover ways to ease the partisan divide in our country. Carol also serves on the journalism professional advisory board at Kent State University in Ohio and is a mentor to its journalism students. In 2001, Carol joined CNN as an anchor on “Headline News.” From 2002 to 2009, she anchored “Daybreak,” the network's former early morning news program. And from 2012 to 2018 she anchored “Newsroom.” She also sub- anchored and was a political reporter for “The Situation Room.” Carol contributed to CNN.com Opinion from 2015-2017. In 2018, she hosted HLN's Across America with Carol Costello. At CNN, Carol was at the forefront of some of the world's most significant stories. She was part of CNN's Peabody Award-winning coverage of the Gulf Oil Spill, Hurricane Katrina, and the 2008 presidential election. She also reported on Pope Francis' visit to the United States, the Boston Marathon bombing, the last space shuttle launch, the Ohio midterm elections, the shooting at Virginia Tech, the tsunami disaster in South Asia, the Russian school hostage crisis, and Hurricanes Charley, Frances, Ivan, and Jeanne. Carol interviewed four former U.S. presidents: President Jimmy Carter, President Ronald Reagan, President George H.W. Bush, and President Bill Clinton; and she covered five presidential inaugurations as well as the 1992, 2008, 2012 and 2016 presidential elections. Before joining CNN, Carol worked at WJLA-TV in Washington, D.C., where she was an anchor and investigative reporter for five years. Prior to that, she spent three years at WBAL-TV in Baltimore. She began her career as a weekend anchor and reporter for WAKR-TV in Akron, Ohio, then moved to WBNS-TV in Columbus, Ohio, to serve as the station's principal weeknight anchor. Costello earned a degree in journalism from Kent State University in Ohio. Carol's reporting has been honored numerous times, including a 1991 Emmy Award for a special on crack and cocaine, a UPI award, and several Associated Press awards. She received an Emmy nomination in 1993, then again in 2008 for outstanding coverage of a breaking news story after Benazir Bhutto's assassination. In 2009, she received an individual Emmy nomination for Outstanding Morning Program. Carol has been interviewed by the New York Times, Washington Post, LA Times, Chicago Tribune, Associated Press, Baltimore Sun, Baltimore Magazine, Columbus Monthly, Akron Beacon Journal, and the Canton Repository.
