Holly Dunn tells her account of the August 29, 1997 attack on the railroad tracks by the University of Kentucky. Chris Maier was killed and Holly Dunn, who was stabbed, beaten and raped, miraculously survived her injuries. Fourteen months after Holly's attack, Dr. Claudia Benton was murdered inside her Houston, TX area home, located near railroad tracks. Lexington Detective Craig Sorrell received a call from ViCAP, a national crime registry database, linking the crimes. Through fingerprint analysis, they identified a suspect. Holly Dunn is originally from Colorado. She started racing around 1982. Her Brother chad raced and she soon followed. Her first race was at Boothill BMX. Soon after she started racing her family moved to Arizona. Moving to AZ really kicked off her racing. The first team she rode for was Bike Barn. Dunn says she raced the boys most times. She says it was normal for her and her brother to hit three local races each day on weekends. Dunn says hitting the national circuit soon followed. Her first factory team that sent all over the country was called ESP. Literally Dunn says she hit every race she could. The one thing she told she never worried about was burn out. Leaving ESP she went to Pedal Power for a short stint and eventually landed on the all girl team Titan. Eventually Dunn walked away from BMX. Before coming back in 2015 she would have two kids with freestyle legend Jim Burgess and living a bit of life. By 2018 Dunn said she enough is enough and moved on from BMX again. But like I say "Once BMX is in your blood it's hard to stay away." Dunn is back racing again on a part time bases. She even qualified for worlds this year. In this interview we also touch on her friendship with Robert Raymonde, losing Burgess, and her desire to continue racing. She discusses her physical and emotional recovery, and how she continues to advocate for other victims today. Hello and welcome back! In today's episode, we talk all about the life and crimes of the infamous Railroad Killer. Angel Maturino Reséndiz was a Mexican citizen who routinely snuck his way into the United States over the span of decades in order to inflict terror and commit heinous crimes across the country and under the cover of the many trains he hopped to get from place to place. Reséndiz struck without discrimination or timidity across the whole United States but what he wasn't counting on was one of his victims surviving. After surviving a horrifying assault, Holly Dunn found a way to keep pushing forward, proving that the power of love and courage is far more powerful than any serial killer could ever dream to be. Today episode is inspired by the fabulous Holly Dunn's recent blog titled: To Count or Not to Count – The Calorie Conundrum Exert: When it comes to recovering from hypothalamic amenorrhea (HA), relative energy deficiency in sport (RED-S) or a malnourishment disorder in the context of an energy deficit – it's logical and potentially appropriate to consider using calorie counting as a method to restore a healthy energy balance. But is counting calories ever truly appropriate or helpful and should you count calories when you're looking to get your period back? My aim in this article is to provide a review of the notion of calorie counting, including potential pitfalls and possible benefits in the context of HA recovery. It is not my intention to provide a definitive answer to the “calorie conundrum” for those looking to recover missing periods, but rather to provide you with knowledge and insights to enable you to decide what may work best for you. https://hollydunn.co.uk/blog/calories What is a calorie? What are the pitfalls of counting calories? As promised, we are talking today about the serial killer from Episode 266. In that episode, we focused on the only survivor of his crimes, Holly Dunn. Today, we take a walk through all of his crimes. Throughout the 80's and 90's, Angel Maturino Resendiz was one of the most brutal killers the United States had ever seen. Known by the media as the Railroad Killer, he stalked victims nears railroad tracks before brutally butchering them either next to the tracks or in their own homes. His mode of operation involved sexual assault and a gruesome amount of overkill. He moved freely between his home in Mexico and the States before finally being caught through fingerprints and SNA. After a reign of terror that was as prolific as it was terrorizing, he was fortunately coerced into turning himself into authorities in 1999. In this week's episode we're featuring the third album from one of the neo-traditional movement's shining lights: Holly Dunn's "Across The Rio Grande" (1988). In this reviewer's estimation, the late 80s saw only a handful of female country voices making honest-to-goodness roots-inspired country music, of which Dunn was one (another being Patty Loveless); and on this, her third album and final for MTM Records, Holly Dunn took on a much bigger production role. "Across The Rio Grande" was a mostly stripped-down affair compared to Dunn's previous offerings - there was barely an electric instrument to be seen (except maybe a bass, according to Dunn). There's some excellent songwriting with her brother Chris Waters as well as a couple of chart singles which did well enough, but the real strength lies in the heartfelt delivery of album cuts including the tender (and poignant, given Dunn's untimely passing) "On The Wings Of An Angel" and the yearning "Just Across The Rio Grande". A fine textured and multi-layered album from one of the neo-traditional era's finest young talents.

This week, Lindsey and Tiffany are admiring the strength of two amazing survivors. Tiffany starts us off with her case about the Railroad’s sole survivor, Holly Dunn. Lindsey talks about the rather unfortunate case of Kristy Frensely’s attack and survival. Both ladies wanted to point out how much inner strength it must take to survive such horrid circumstances and continue living every day after such an attack. The ladies of Luminol Cocktail are enjoying some fruity yellow hammer slammers for this episode. Next week, Lindsey and Tiffany will be collaborating on criminal profiling from research conducted by both Robert Ressler and John Douglas. Be sure to come back for another round of Luminol Cocktail! Alice Randall, a Harvard-educated novelist, professor, and songwriter, is the only African-American woman to have written a #1 country hit. She joins us to talk about her career as a songwriter and so much more EPISODE DETAILS: PART ONE The guys chat about why Paul has been M.I.A. and announce a new contest for a personalized signed copy of Lamont Dozier's new autobiography. PART TWO - 7:13 mark Scott gets together with Alice Randall in Nashville to find out why her dad was so driven to highlight women's contributions to music; how she concluded that country lyrics are the modern day equivalent of metaphysical poetry and 17th Century Puritan sermons; the encouragement she received from Hal David; why she spent hours studying lyrics in the basement of the Country Music Hall of Fame; the reason that Steve Earle cussed her out; why it's harder to be a woman in country music than to be black; and her theory that country music should be defined as three chords and four specific truths. ABOUT ALICE RANDALL Alice Randall is a Harvard-educated African-American novelist who lives in Nashville and writes country songs. Along with Matraca Berg, Alice co-wrote Trisha Yearwood’s chart-topping single “XXX’s and OOO’s (An American Girl),” making her the first—and, so far, only—African-American woman to write a #1 country hit. Additionally, she co-wrote Mo Bandy’s Top 40 hit “Many Mansions,” as well as Judy Rodman’s “Girls Ride Horses, Too,” which was the first Top 10 written by either Alice or her co-writer, future Nashville Songwriters Hall of Famer Mark D. Sanders. After forming an early songwriting partnership with Steve Earle, Alice went on to have her songs recorded by a long list of artists, including Holly Dunn, Marie Osmond, Glen Campbell, Jo-El Sonnier, Walter Hyatt, Pat Alger, Matraca Berg, Radney Foster, Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, Crystal Gayle, and Hank Thompson. Along with Mark O’Connor and Harry Stinson she wrote the groundbreaking “Ballad of Sally Anne.” Alice is a New York Times Bestselling novelist who has authored The Wind Done Gone, Pushkin and the Queen of Spades, Rebel Yell, Ada's Rules, and the forthcoming Black Bottom Saints, which is partially inspired by her formative years in Detroit. In addition to her fiction writing, Alice teamed with her daughter, Caroline Randall Williams, to write Soul Food Love: Healthy Recipes Inspired by One Hundred Years of Cooking in a Black Family. She is currently a Writer-in-Residence at Vanderbilt University where she teaches a number of courses, including Country Lyric in American Culture. She was featured in Ken Burns’ acclaimed Country Music documentary spotlighting the often-overlooked contributions of African Americans to the genre’s development. Not only does she write songs, but Randall thinks deeply about, and is deeply moved by, the literary value of song lyrics.
