What is the relationship between fear and faith? This question is explored in Rivka Kahan's recent essay, “Fear and Faith in Religious Life” (TRADITION, Spring 2026). In this episode Kahan discusses these topics with our podcast host, Mali Brofsky. Together, they think through their strategies to show their students that emotions such as fear are not only acceptable but are actively explored and embraced within our tradition. Kahan outlines three primary frameworks for understanding fear within Jewish thought: Malbim posits that faith acts as a source of strength that helps a person overcome fear, serving a “buoy” to faith by providing inner strength. Abravanel suggests that fear is necessary for true faith, which is understood as the commitment to follow God’s will despite experiencing fear. Finally, the Midrashic approach holds that maintaining a level of worry reflects moral humility. Brofsky notes that these models are not mutually exclusive; rather, individuals may cycle through them depending on their circumstances. The speakers discuss how extreme confidence, even when based on faith, can inadvertently lead to hubris, and argue that experiencing anxiety or unworthiness can foster moral refinement and humility. They close by discussing the difference between individual and national fear, and how to maintain a healthy faith balanced with humility in times of national challenge—something all too familiar to our readers these days. Rivka Kahan's TRADITION essay will appear in her forthcoming book, which explores human emotions through the lens of Tanakh and its commentaries, to be published as part of Kitvuni Fellowship of Matan. She teaches post-high school students at several institutions in Israel and develops educational and scholarly resources for AlHaTorah.org. Mali Brofsky, MSW, a member of TRADITION's editorial board, is a senior faculty member at MMY and a social worker in private practice. Strafford's Noah Kahan is arguably the most famous musician to come out of Vermont in recent years. A new Netflix documentary, "Noah Kahan: Out of Body," follows the Upper Valley singer-songwriter as he grapples with fame, his mental health and complex family dynamics.Following the meteoric success of "Stick Season" in 2022, Kahan spent the next few years touring, playing increasingly larger venues. This culminated in stops at Madison Square Garden in New York City and Fenway Park in Boston. The "Out of Body" filmmakers joined him for those concerts, but also for many quieter moments at home in Nashville and Strafford. The cameras capture Kahan struggling with body dysmorphia and disordered eating, and trying to write new songs that could survive in the shadow of "Stick Season."The documentary premiered at SXSW last month, where it won an audience award. Its director, Nick Sweeney, made repeated trips to Strafford and the surrounding area during filming in order to better understand his subject. Then; JLee MacKenzie is an animator who grew up in Chittenden County. He was in film school in California when the pandemic hit, so he turned to animation to find a new way to tell stories. MacKenzie's new film is called “Definitely Gangster,” and it just premiered at the Made Here Film Festival. It follows the story of two kids who fly around the world to chase a dream. One of the kids is terminally ill, but the film is still a comedy. It was made with motion capture in a cabin in Worchester, Vermont and features local voice actors.Lastly; Seven Days music editor Chris Farnsworth chats with Vermont Edition managing producer Jon Ehrens about notable new music releases out of Vermont. They discuss Burlington stalwart Bob Wagner's new song "The Richest Man on Earth," and the improbable techno of Roost.World and their single "Genesis."

This 17-track project continues the folk-pop and Americana sound established on the 2022 breakthrough album Stick Season while introducing new elements including increased piano presence and rock-pop detours, most notably on “American Cars.”The album explores deep themes of family trauma, sobriety, mental health challenges including anxiety, depression, and body dysmorphia, identity, hometown disconnect, and the tension between fame and personal authenticity. Unlike Stick Season, The Great Divide expands beyond Kahan's personal perspective to incorporate multiple viewpoints, anchored by the recurring motif of small-town life versus global success. Key tracks include the lead single “The Great Divide,” which addresses fear, mortality, and existential reflection, alongside “Doors,” “Paid Time Off,” “Dan,” “23,” “Deny Deny Deny,” “Porch Light,” “Dashboard,” and “Haircut.”Production credits feature Gabe Simon and Aaron Dessner, with recording sessions held in Nashville and Upstate New York. The project is positioned as a direct successor to Stick Season rather than a radical reinvention, praised for its strong songwriting and emotional depth while drawing comparisons to Taylor Swift's pop structures, Don Henley's tone, Bon Iver, Zach Bryan, and Mumford & Sons.Analytic Dreamz examines the accompanying documentary Noah Kahan: Out of Body, which provides additional context on Kahan's mental health struggles, writer's block, and personal philosophy of confronting rather than curing his challenges. The segment also covers the 2026 The Great Divide Tour, a North American arena and stadium run launching June 11 in Orlando and concluding August 31 in Seattle, with multiple sold-out dates including a four-night Boston residency at Fenway Park.Ticket demand has driven high pricing, with resale values reaching up to $13,198 in Boston, while base tickets start around $220. Analytic Dreamz analyzes how this project represents Noah Kahan's transition into a stadium-level headliner while maintaining his “regular-guy” relatability and authentic storytelling. This segment provides comprehensive insight into the album's thematic ambition, commercial momentum, and cultural positioning as a key 2026 release in folk-pop and Americana. Privacy & Opt-Out: https://redcircle.com/privacy

LA SPINZ – March 30, 2026 – Final Sequence Segment 1: KPOP supergroup BTS returned to the limelight after a 4 year hiatus to complete military service. “Arirang,” the group's first studio album in six years, debuted with 110 million first-day streams on Spotify, which easily beat the 63 million that the year's previous leader, Harry Styles' “Kiss All the Time. Disco, Occasionally” did on ITS first day. SORRY HARRY. Segment 2: Noah Kahan made audiences laugh and cry at the South By Southwest Film Festival in Austin, Texas. Kahan is featured in a new Netflix documentary about depression and body dysmorphia, called “Out Of Body.” In the film, Kahan opens up about his disordered eating, saying he has struggled with his body image for 15 years. But DON'T pass the popcorn…he KAHAN't eat it. Segment 3: A video of Taylor Frankie Paul throwing barstools and cursing at her ex in front of her crying child caused Disney to pull the plug on Paul's upcoming season of “The Bachelorette”. However, Taylor's castmates on “The Secret Lives of Mormon Wives” had ALREADY complained to Disney previously about her behavior….so Disney already KNEW. Bad mouse! Segment 4: Director Sofia Coppola has shelved a planned 2026 film project with long-time collaborator Kirsten Dunst, stating the project felt “too SAD” given the current “dark times”. The untitled period piece, which was set to shoot in the U.S., is dead in the water. Coppola said she wants to direct a docu-drama on Britney Spears. And that's NOT sad? Segment 5: In her best-selling memoir, ‘You with the Sad Eyes', Christina Applegate confesses to dumping Brad Pitt for Skid Row frontman, Sebastian Bach. She says that Pitt was her date to the 1989 MTV Video Music Awards, but when she met Bach there, she dumped Pitt to hang out with the rocker. Bach, now 57, says he was just a YOUTH, GONE WILD. Segment 6: Dead Or Alive: Nicholas Brendon is best known for playing Xander Harris for 7 seasons of “Buffy, The Vampire Slayer.” Dead Or Alive? DEAD. In recent years, Harris had issues with drugs and had left the entertainment industry and focused on art and painting. He was NOT being considered for the “Buffy” spinoff which ALSO died last week. BOOO. Sorry. Segment 7: The trailer for “Spider-Man: Brand New Day” has become the biggest trailer of all time with 718 million views in just 24 hours. The Spidey trailer from Sony Pictures broke the previous record held by “Deadpool and Wolverine,” which had 365 million views. Good thing someone at Sony had the “SPIDEY SENSE” to green light the project. Segment 8: The argument between Justin Bieber and Usher at the Oscars after-party was HEATED and continued to escalate until others intervened between them. The incident occurred at the Chateau Marmont in Hollywood, hosted by Beyoncé and Jay-Z, and was attended by a star-studded guest list. The friendship between Man Baby and Usher has been strained. SURPRISING? NOOO. Segment 9: Attention geeks! There will be a Minecraft World amusement park opening in London in 2027. The $70 million project will open within Chessington World Adventures in the UK from Microsoft-owned “Minecraft” maker Mojang Studios and owner of the Legoland theme parks, Merlin Entertainments. But, you WILL have to leave your Mom's BASEMENT. Segment 10: Idiot Of The Week – TikTok star Benjamin Gleason was arrested and charged with rape. He is now in Columbia County jail in New York. He’s been charged with 2 counts of rape, 1 count of predatory sexual assault committed against more than 1 person, 1 count of criminal sexual act in the 1st degree by forcible compulsion, and 1 count of 1st degree sexual abuse. IDIOT! Segment 11: Kelly Osbourne and her fiancé, Slipknot keyboardist Sid Wilson, have ended their engagement. This is because of Kelly’s difficult time dealing with the loss of her father, Ozzy Osbourne, who died last July. The breakup comes 7 months after Sid proposed to Kelly at Ozzy’s final concert with Black Sabbath last summer. But did her EMACIATED look also contribute? Segment 12: Nicki Minaj is being sued for failing to pay a BIG bill. 24/7 Productions is suing Nicki for refusing to pay them $275,000 for the company's services to produce two concerts for Nicki. The rapper was evidently paid over $650,000 for the shows, but STILL won't pay the bill. Hey, what do you expect from a Super Freaky Girl? Segment 13: “REACHER” star Alan Ritchson was caught on video beating up his neighbor, Ronnie Taylor. The problem started when Ritchson loudly rode his motorcycle through their quiet Tennessee neighborhood at a high speed. After Taylor jumped out in front of Ritchson's bike, Alan punched him and kicked him four times. But no charges were filed, as a verdict of self-defense was…REACHED. Segment 14: A California jury found that Bill Cosby HAD drugged and sexually assaulted former waitress Donna Motsinger in 1972, awarding her $19.25 million for her trauma over the past 54 years. Cosby served three years in prison but was freed in 2021 after his conviction was overturned in Pennsylvania. Pay up, Bill! Segment 15: Trash Bin – Stars of “The Real Housewives of Pretoria”, a South African installment of the popular franchise, have been arrested for stealing thousands of dollars' worth of groceries from Publix, a Florida grocery store. Melany and Petrus Viljoen were charged with aggravated grand retail theft and accused of stealing 392 items. That's SOME shoplifting! Segment 16: News Wrap – a) Major League Baseball has signed a deal with gambling company Polymarket which will allow you to pretty much bet on anything to do with the game. b) Amazon is planning a new smartphone more than a decade after its Fire Phone flop. c) Xiaomi has trialed the use of its self-developed humanoid robots in its electric vehicle factory. Two humanoid robots can complete 90% of the work in three hours. Let THAT sink in. Segment 18: Song Of The Week – Dominic Fike – “Babydoll” – Dominic Fike had a difficult childhood, growing up in Naples, Florida because both of his parents were heroin addicts. His father briefly showed up over the course of a few weeks and taught him how to play guitar before disappearing again. Eight years ago, he made a tape of a song in a room a friend let him stay in, while he was under house arrest. He was dead poor and only had his music to guide him forward. He is now a well-known musician and actor on the hit series “Euphoria.” A song from that dark period of his life has taken off which we LOVE. Here's Dominic Fike with the Song of the Week, “Babydoll.” That was Dominic Fike with the Song of the Week, “Babydoll.” The post LA SPINZ – March 30 2026 appeared first on LA Spinz.

"The Great Divide" delves into emotional distance from rapid fame, reflecting on the gap between past and present self, strained ties with hometown friends and family, unsaid words, and unresolved conversations among those who grew up together but drifted apart. The narrative-driven music video—Kahan's first heavily story-focused—co-produced with Mastercard, premieres during the brand's commercial slot in the 2026 Grammy Awards broadcast (Sunday, February 1, 8:00 p.m. ET on CBS/Paramount+). The episode begins with a deep dive into the latest retail and economic headlines that are shaping the landscape. Steve and Michael dissect the U.S. government shutdown, its ripple effects on employment, and how cost-cutting in Washington could further weaken an already fragile job market. They then examine new tariffs on furniture, cabinets, and agricultural exports, highlighting how the policies are squeezing retailers and farmers alike—particularly soybean producers, who have been hit hard by China's retaliation. The hosts also analyze the latest on TikTok's uncertain U.S. future, as political maneuvering opens the door to a controversial joint venture involving major tech and media figures. In retail performance, Costco's continued dominance and Nike's early turnaround efforts take center stage, as both giants adapt to shifting consumer sentiment and inflationary pressure. The segment concludes with a discussion of AI's growing impact on the workplace, holiday hiring trends, and how discretionary spending and de minimis trade rules could redefine retail economics on both sides of the border. Then, in a wide-ranging interview, David Kahan, President & CEO Birkenstock Americas delivers a masterclass in brand stewardship and retail strategy. He traces Birkenstock's roots from a humble German cobbler to a global fashion phenomenon—revealing how the brand's success rests on “never deviating from its DNA.” Every product begins with the footbed, he says, making comfort, health, and purpose inseparable from style.Kahan credits Birkenstock's ongoing cultural resonance—from the Barbie movie to red carpet collaborations—to disciplined brand management and “engineered distribution.” He explains how each Birkenstock store is a unique community experience, blending tactile engagement with hyper-local curation. De-escalating High-Conflict Divorce: A Rabbi's Perspective on Finding PeaceRabbi Avi Kahan joins Seth Nelson and Pete Wright to explore how de-escalation techniques and cultural sensitivity can help families reach sustainable resolutions during divorce. As a mediator handling complex religious and cultural divorce cases, Rabbi Kahan brings unique insights into managing high-conflict situations and helping couples transition from being spouses to successful co-parents.The conversation delves deep into how fear and conflict often mask deeper emotional struggles during divorce. Seth and Pete explore with Rabbi Kahan how the legal system's focus on "fairness" can sometimes escalate tensions, while religious and cultural perspectives might offer alternative paths to resolution. They discuss how divorce doesn't actually separate parents—it unifies them in a new way as co-parents, requiring them to articulate a new future together for their children's sake.Questions we answer in this episode:How can you de-escalate high-conflict divorce situations? What role does "fairness" really play in divorce proceedings? How can religious perspectives help in understanding divorce as transformation rather than failure?Key Takeaways:Focus on living your life, not your divorce—don't let temporary legal proceedings define your actionsDe-escalation often requires helping both parties want the divorce, not just need itCourt litigation can force parents to suppress their authentic selves, potentially harming childrenThe episode offers valuable insights for anyone navigating a contentious divorce, especially those dealing with cultural or religious complexities. Rabbi Kahan's perspective on viewing divorce as a unifying rather than separating force provides a fresh framework for approaching this challenging life transition. Links & NotesVisit Rabbi Avi Kahan on the web, Instagram, LinkedIn, or YouTubeSchedule a consult with SethGot a question you want to ask on the show? In the retail world, we often throw around the term "disruptor" when we're talking about a promising new brand that breaks through the busy marketplace and challenges the status quo; or even leads the charge in a broader cultural movement. But in some cases, that story isn't about something new at all, but something enduring. Something that's been there all along, waiting for the world to catch up. Birkenstock is one such brand. For the majority of their roughly 250-year lifespan, Birkenstock—one of the oldest footwear brands in the world—has been slowly simmering in the background. They built a modestly successful business around the revolutionary innovation and the thoughtful evolution of their signature contoured footbeds, and over time their undeniable comfort and noticeable orthopedic benefits earned them an incredibly loyal yet hyper-niche following. Then, something remarkable happened. In 2012, at a Celine runway show, designer Phoebe Philo—known really in the fashion world for redefining modern luxury—walked out wearing a pair of fur-lined sandals that looked remarkably like Birkenstocks. It wasn't a marketing campaign. It wasn't a collaboration. It was just one woman, making a choice. And the world noticed. To help us better understand the incredible growth of this brand in the last decade plus, and the very tangible touchstone for its continued success, we're going to hear from David Kahan, President and General Manager of the Americas for Birkenstock. After that we'll take a closer look at Nordstrom's unique partnership with Birkenstock from one of our very own: Women's Footwear Buyer Randa Farran. Thanks for tuning in to episode 86.
