For nearly two years, the city of Atlanta lived in fear as children and young adults began disappearing at an alarming rate. Between 1979 and 1981, at least 28–30 victims—most of them Black children, teenagers, and young adults—were abducted and murdered, leaving families desperate for answers and transforming one of America's fastest-growing cities into a community gripped by panic. On this episode of Grinding True Crime, ToddFox and Matty Matt take listeners through one of the most controversial criminal investigations in American history. Beginning with the first disappearances of Edward Smith and Alfred Evans, they examine how the murders escalated, the fear that spread through Atlanta's neighborhoods, and the enormous pressure placed on investigators to stop the killings before more children vanished. The episode explores the lives of the victims, the unprecedented task force created to investigate the crimes, the FBI's behavioral profiling, and the forensic breakthroughs that eventually focused investigators on Wayne Bertram Williams, a local freelance photographer and aspiring music promoter. Todd and Matty break down the famous bridge surveillance operation over the Chattahoochee River, the fiber and dog-hair evidence presented by prosecutors, and the investigation that led to Williams' arrest. The hosts also examine the 1982 trial, where Wayne Williams was convicted only of the murders of two adult victims—Nathaniel Cater and Jimmy Ray Payne—not any of the child murders. They discuss why authorities later attributed many of the child killings to Williams, why he has always maintained his innocence, and why the case continues to divide investigators, legal experts, journalists, and victims' families decades later. This episode also takes an honest look at the lingering questions that refuse to disappear. Were all of the murders committed by one person? Could there have been multiple offenders? Did race, politics, and public pressure influence the investigation? Todd and Matty present the known evidence, the competing theories, and the unanswered questions while honoring the memories of the young victims whose lives were tragically cut short.
