The raw pet food sector was shocked when Jacqueline Hill and Roxanne Stone, the original founders and operators of Answers Pet Food, resigned and disassociated entirely from the company they helped build into a success. As the company's revenue began to plummet with CEO Keith Hill at the helm, Keith launched an aggressive attack against Jacqueline Hill and Roxanne Stone, as well as against the independent farmers who wanted to expand their business opportunities beyond Keith Hill. Most of what has happened has been a mystery, until now. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/kohl-harrington/support

Why does our dog have bad breath? Why do so many pets have digestive issues and even cancer? What's going on? Billy Hoekman, the Nutrition Science Director for Answers Pet Food, discusses the role that diet plays in pet health. Just as with people, animals could benefit from a dietary overhaul that leads back to what suits their constitution best. Billy goes over the ingredients in most pet food, and explains how pet food labels don't tell the entire story. He covers why a raw diet is preferable over kibble. And he gives concrete tips for how to transition pets to a more suitable diet to cultivate good health and avoid disease. Go to answerspetfood.com for blogs and more resources. Rowan Sanderson sits down with Billy Hoekman, Science Director at Answers Pet Food, to discuss the health benefits of fermentation, fermented dog food & fermented milk. They also discuss ‘good’ vs ‘bad’ bacteria & yeast. The key to a healthy diet is to nurture diversity in the community within the gut. According to Billy, people need to realize that there is a difference between good and bad bacteria. It is possible to over-sterilize one’s environment and food, which is actually unhealthy in the long run. “We should be looking to harness bacteria rather than avoid it,” agrees Rowan. By harnessing what nature has been providing “since people have been people”, food can be made safer and more bioavailable.

Rowan Sanderson sits down with Billy Hoekman, Director of Nutrition Science at Answers Pet Food. He speaks to us about being the only company in America to produce fermented raw pet food. Billy describes the many benefits of feeding your dog all-fermented meats, vegetables, and milk. Fermenting dog food preserves and exponentially increases the amount of enzymes, vitamins, and other nutrients found in it. He notes that “Food in your refrigerator is good for a week.” That food has about 2.5 billion probiotics on average from the food matrixes that were added to it. When you leave it out at room temperature for 48 hours, that number shoots up to 12 billion probiotics per ounce of food.

1 day after we recorded this podcast, Hillary had to put down sweet Huey for internal bleeding. My heart broke for her. He was her everything. This podcast is still very relevant and we decided to air it as-is. Love you Hillary. So sorry "Do you love your pet?"  "Nutrition is not a crisis until it is. If you are not working to be healthy than you are a actively becoming unhealthy."   A dog's diet has proven time and again to derail illness and at times cure a dog. With a booming pet industry, it is time to look at a diet for many reasons. In October, shortly after our podcast Hillary Rosen got a cancer diagnosis for her dog Huey that put her life into spin cycle. She went on a rampage reading everything she could, which lead her to Billy from Answers Pet Food. In today's podcast, Billy joined Hillary and I to talk about how important a dog's diet REALLY is. I learned a ton....you will, too.
