Amanda Toups, partner with her husband Isaac Toups in New Orleans' Toups Meatery, flew into action when COVID-19 closed the restaurant back in March, 2020. The couple cooked and handed out to-go meals for their employees and their families and anyone else who showed up in need. Within a few days, 500 people wrapped around the block.Through the end of 2020, they prepped and distributed 100,000 meals, but the need didn't end once the pandemic eased and restaurants were back in operation. In 2021, Hurricane Ida hit New Orleans, and in 2024, the governor of Louisiana cut back funds on summer feeding programs for school children. Amanda immediately brought back Toups Family Meal, starting with Easter boxes. Then she got in front of the media to broadcast the dire need in the community and spread the word on her active social platforms. As a result, she was able to drum up support from locals and other nonprofits to raise funds and help with meal deliveries. The Toups amassed a volunteer delivery driver army of 200 people and this summer delivered 70,500 meals.Now Toups Family Meal is a fully operative nonprofit with a commissary kitchen, meal and grocery distribution center and delivery hub, mostly self-funded but supported by donations and volunteers. Make America Healthy Again? Have we ever been healthy? I've been in the health field for thirty-five years. In all that time, I had never heard a news media report on red dyes in food. For the first time, I'm encouraged by the future of our American food system! For me, this is not a political issue. I truly want to give people the same opportunities that I have. I know how to read labels and avoid cancer-causing ingredients in my food. Most people don't. Americans are starting to question our food manufacturers. That's a big first step in eliminating harmful ingredients from food (many of which have been banned in Europe for decades). Today's podcast, with MAHA advocate and activist Kelly Ryerson, made me sad and mad. Kelly (Glyphosate Girl) discussed the damage glyphosate (the active ingredient in Roundup) does to our environment and bodies. Kelly has spent years in the trenches explaining why this chemical is so dangerous to anyone who would listen. It's such an easy default to use a heavy chemical load to kill weeks. Did you know there are simple alternatives to using such a large amount of chemicals in farming? Kelly also explained that while this product is sold in Europe, the company that makes Roundup has created a less toxic alternative for sale in Europe. This, to me, is mind-blowing! My friend Kim loves crime stories from Crime Junkie to Dateline. Me? Not so much. But I enjoy a good, not-too-gory crime story where the bad guy gets it in the end. Since I'm part of a vast cancer community, I hear stories that encourage me and some that make me so upset that I can't sleep. This is one of those stories. In 1898, Pierre and Madam Curie discovered radium. In 1903, Pierre Curie said, "He would not care to be alone with radium in a room as it would burn all the skin off his body, destroy his eyesight, and probably kill him."  In the 1920s, young women (average age 14) were hired to paint radium on watches and clock dials. Radium was fluorescent, so it made the numbers easier to read. However, it was also incredibly toxic and could turn bones into a fragile honeycomb. Fast forward to New Jersey in 1920 to the U.S. Radium Corporation (USRC). The owners and scientists at USRC knew that radium in large amounts was very dangerous. Yet these young girls were told, "After you dip your paintbrush in radium, put the tip in your mouth to make it a finer point before you start painting." When I told my husband how many of these young women died from radium poisoning, he said, "This is murder." Yes, it was murder. But no one went to jail. And before I was diagnosed with breast cancer, I never gave it a second thought. Alcohol was part of my social life, or I'd have a glass of wine on a flight to chill out. Recent research has made me rethink my choices. Research shared by the Susan G. Komen Center tells us that each cocktail I consume can increase my breast cancer risk by 7%. I first saw Kris on The Oprah Winfrey Show years ago, long before I was diagnosed with cancer. Kris has been living with stage four incurable cancer for twenty-one years. HELP! Reading labels takes a lot of time, and even with a science degree, I have a hard time figuring out what's good and what's bad. If I'm struggling, I guess you are as well. Food companies must convince you that their product is the best item on the supermarket shelves. Their marketing message is on the front, and the truth is on the back. For example, I picked up a package of high-protein chips at Costco. The front of the package said, "made with the highest quality ingredients." Well, that's great. I flipped the bag over and saw they use canola, sunflower, and safflower oils. These oils are highly inflammatory AND highly processed, NOT GREAT. I hate to say it, but you'll need to assume that most food companies are not going to tell you the truth. It reminds me of that movie with Jack Nicholson and Diane Keeton, Something's Gotta Give. In it, he tells her, "I've always told you some version of the truth," and she responds, "The Truth Doesn't Have Versions!" Unfortunately, there are many versions of the truth in the food world.
