This event is co-organized by IFPRI and The London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine (LSHTM) Research Consortium for School Health and Nutrition Undernutrition during childhood and early adolescence has long-term consequences for development and health, and for girls it can affect the survival and wellbeing of their children. Diet-related risk factors are estimated to cause 20% of global mortality, and changes in food systems have led to rapid shifts to unhealthy diets and reductions in physical activity, contributing to the increase in rates of overweight and obesity. Moreover, current dietary and population trends will exacerbate risks to humans and the planet. School feeding programs, or school meals, are a widely implemented safety net with documented impacts across social protection, education, health and nutrition dimensions, and substantial projected economic returns to investment. Globally, programs reach over 400 million children for a total investment of over $50 billion a year. By being most effective for the most disadvantaged children, school meal programs can “level the playing field” in education, health, and nutrition. Experiences in high- and middle-income countries have also linked school meals to food systems transformation, where food procurement for school meals is used as an outlet for commercial farmers. National governments in LIMCs have shown interest in explicitly linking food systems transformation with the school feeding market through “home-grown” school feeding (HGSF). In HGSF, the “structured demand” for school food and related services is channeled to smallholders and other supply chain actors with the intent of stimulating agricultural productivity, increasing incomes, improving diets, and reducing food insecurity. How can we create holiday outreach programs that truly lift up our students, without compromising their dignity? Join me, Steph Johnson, and let's discuss the heart of compassionate holiday outreach. We'll explore practical, ethical strategies that make a real impact, especially for students facing economic challenges or homelessness. Together, we'll look at what works (and what doesn't) with programs like coat drives and gift trees, and how we can avoid the common pitfalls that sometimes reinforce the very barriers we're trying to break. It takes more than just good intentions to plan a successful holiday outreach program: it takes foresight, collaboration, and a solid game plan. We'll walk through the essential steps for organizing an initiative that hits home, from early planning and community buy-in to volunteer coordination and mindful promotion. With a little strategic thinking and support from resources like the School for School Counselors Mastermind Initiatives, even the smallest contributions can make a huge difference. Dr. Whitaker is back with us to talk about back-to-school health. He explains how children get virus and why it's more common for some children than others. We also chat about how stress and the introduction of new viruses during the holiday season also play a role. Dr. Whitaker gives some ideas on ways to minimize risks of getting sick so often and how often is actually “normal” to get sick for school aged children.TakeawaysRespiratory droplets and contaminated surfaces are common ways to contract viruses.Children's immature immune systems and increased exposure to other children in school contribute to their susceptibility to illness.Stress and the introduction of new viruses during the holiday season can weaken the immune system.Maintaining good hygiene, getting enough sleep, managing stress, and eating a balanced diet can support the immune system.Vaccines can help the immune system develop a memory for fighting specific viruses.Find Dr. Whitaker here:Austin's Concierge Pediatrician | Direct Primary Care | Lakeway (bluemonarchpediatrics.com)IG: @‌bluemonarchpediatricsThis episode is sponsored by BirthCo. School nurses and school health and safety are intertwined and yet often misunderstood. The role that nurses play in the school environment varies across states and districts - although far too many schools and districts have no or too few school nurses. Feeling safe is fundamental for students to be able to learn and for teachers and others to help students learn. Unfortunately, school nurses are often not included in conversations about school safety despite their being on the front lines of students' lives.Ensuring safety in school requires attention to a wide range of needs including supporting student physical and mental health and reducing risk of harm at school. Including school nurses proactively in health and safety discussions, utilizing their knowledge and experience, could make a big difference for students and adults in a school setting. School nurses can help guide discussions and provide ideas for healthier and safer schools.Robin Cogan is currently in her 23rd year as a New Jersey school nurse in the Camden City School District. Robin is the New Jersey Director for the National Association of School Nurses representing the New Jersey State School Nurses Association. She teaches at the Rutgers University School Nursing in the School Nurses Certificate program. She writes and speaks about school nursing, with a focus on the role school nurses play in school health and safety. In her work Robin highlights the toll many aspects of our lives have on student and adult mental health in the school environment. From pandemic changes to bullying, from tired and hungry students to frightening drills at school, along with many other stressors, Robin advocates for strategies to make schools safer by reducing risks. She also promotes learning about how brains work and how they process stress and emotions so that students of all ages and the adults who work with them can learn strategies and skills to better manage difficult times that we all face at some time in our lives.www.relentlessschoolnurse.com@RobinCogan - Twitter (aka X)The Relentless School Nurse - FacebookRelentless_schoolnurse - InstagramThe work of Dr. Lori Desautels - APPLIED EDUCATIONAL NEUROSCIENCEThe work of Dr. Sean Ginwright - Healing Centered EngagementThe work of Dr. Wendy Ellis - A Pair of ACEs - Resilience TreeElevating the Role of School Nurses in School Based Mental and Behavioral HealthChild Mind InstituteMental Health Training Intervention for Health Providers in Schools (MH-TIPS)StopBullying.govSubstance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA)If you enjoy our content, please like and follow - and review if you can!

On Wednesday, May 10th the State of Oregon announced that in alignment with the federal government ending the COVID-19 public health emergency on Thursday, May 11th they would be lifting health-protective measures related to COVID-19. Some of these changes are effective immediately, and others will take effect in the coming weeks. Here is a summary of the changes as they pertain to school and district staff and students. Vaccination Requirements - As of Saturday, June 17th, 2023 school staff and volunteers are no longer required to either provide proof of vaccination against COVID-19 or request a religious or medical exception. The vaccination/exception requirement remains in effect for any new hires/volunteer approvals between now and June 16th.   Exposure and Isolation Guidance - Effective immediately, a five-day period of isolation for those infected with COVID-19 is no longer recommended for the general population, including people in K-12 education settings. Instead, students or staff members who are ill should follow the Too Sick for School/Work guidelines and stay home until they are fever-free for at least 24 hours without the aid of medication and other symptoms are improving.  School Health and Isolation Rooms - Isolation Rooms will remain in place through the end of this school year as spaces where students who are ill can await pick-up from their family/caregiver. Health Rooms will be used for routine medication administration, minor wound care, and other illnesses that cannot be categorized as a communicable disease - for example: upset stomach, headache, and so on.  COVID-19 Tests - Schools will still have access to COVID-19 test kits to send home with families who request them until our current supply has been depleted.  Mask wearing will remain optional for students and staff, and is still recommended for those who are returning to school/work after a COVID-19 infection. Staying current on COVID vaccinations is also strongly encouraged.  Our Featured Event was our Proud to be HSD Festival on Saturday, May 13th. What a beautiful and fantastic day we had! Everything went off without a hitch and we were thrilled to see so many students, staff, families, and community members interacting with and celebrating our students. We are already planning for next year's Festival, which promises to be bigger and better than ever. Mark your calendars for Saturday, May 12th, 2024 and if you know of any student garage bands - send them our way! We're trying to arrange an old-school battle of the bands as part of the festivities! There will be no school for all students on Monday, May 29th in observance of Memorial Day. Please enjoy a safe and relaxing holiday weekend! Oregon's June Economic and Revenue forecast was released on Wednesday, May 17th. The forecast showed another surge in tax collections and resources available for the 2023-25 biennium, which presents an opportunity for Legislators to appropriate $10.3 billion to the State School Fund. This is the level that would meet Current Service Level in all school districts across the state. Learn more on the Budget Matters page of our website. According to new data from CDC's Youth Risk Behavior Survey (YRBS), America's youth are engulfed in a growing wave of sadness and violence, with teen girls and teens who identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual, and questioning (LGBQ+) experiencing extremely high levels of violence and mental health challenges. While solving this mental health crisis seems overwhelming, one step forward is to focus on the place where 95% of kids spend much of their time – school. But how exactly can schools help to support our teens, and what can we do to further support our schools? https://www.cdc.gov/nchhstp/newsroom/2023/increased-sadness-and-violence-press-release.html Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) / 1) https://www.cdc.gov/healthyyouth/whatworks/what-works-overview.htm 2) Call or text 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline if you are experiencing mental health-related distress or are worried about a loved one who may need crisis support. Recently released CDC data found that teen girls are experiencing startling levels of sadness and violence -- nearly 1 in 3 had seriously considered suicide and 57 percent felt persistently sad or hopeless. The report also found high levels of distress among LGBQ+ teens. Dr. Kathleen Ethier, director of the CDC's Division of Adolescent and School Health, discusses what's behind this crisis in teen mental health, why girls seem to be suffering more than boys, and what parents, peers, schools and communities do to help teens cope. An Amber Alert flashed across Cecily's phone leading us to a big conversation on parental rights. In this episode we let you in on a true hashing out of our thoughts. 1. Medical Kidnaping: Is it ever ok for the medical community to say THEY know what's best for your child? If so, where is that line drawn? 2. Transgenderism... Kids Transitioning: When kids are allowed to make permanent, life altering decisions and invoke irreparable physical damage, what is our responsibility? Where should our aim be directed? 3. School Health Centers: A dad finds out his son was prescribed and taking psych meds at school without his knowledge... and it was completely legal. Is there something more than "helping the less fortunate" behind the massive push for these centers around the United States? When we ask our governments to intervene in issues that we see clearly leading to suffering as a natural consequence of living outside of a moral foundation we'd be well served to remember our goverments have no moral foundation, their authority is culture. Teen Innovator's New AI Tool Helps Create Affordable Drugs The U.S. has some of the highest prescription drug prices in the world, which can push patients into bankruptcy over medications they cannot afford. More than three in four American adults think the prices of prescription drugs are unaffordable, prompting the Senate to recently pass a bill intended to help lower prescription drug costs for seniors. One young innovator set out to find his own solution. 17 year-old Rishab Jain developed ICOR, a tool to improve the rapid production of drugs like COVID-19 vaccines. Ira talks with  Jain from Portland, Oregon, about his innovation and vision for the future.   When Trapping Invasive Bugs Is Science Homework The spotted lanternfly, an invasive species, was first introduced to the U.S. in Pennsylvania, around 2014. Since then, it has spread aggressively, and has now been spotted in 11 states. The bug is pretty—adult spotted lanternflies are about an inch long, and feature striking spotted forewings and a flashy red patch on the hindwings. But they are also very hungry, and pose a significant threat to agricultural crops, including grapevines. Many control efforts have focused on either stomping the insects on sight, or on spotting and destroying the egg masses that the lanternflies lay in the fall. However, researchers have been developing trapping techniques for the bugs as well. One, involving a sticky band looped around a tree, is effective—but can also snare other insects and even birds. Experts at the Penn State Extension have come up with a new style of circle trap for lanternflies, based upon an existing trap for pecan weevils. Now, STEM educators at Rutgers University are using that design as the starting point for an engineering design challenge, asking K-12 teachers and students to come up with improvements to the design. Read the rest at sciencefriday.com. Should Kids Get Vaccinated If They've Already Had COVID-19? It's nearing the end of August, which means it's back-to-school season. There's a big difference between this school year and last: All children are now eligible for the COVID-19 vaccine. This means the risk of disease will likely be way down, compared to the past two autumns, according to vaccine researcher and pediatrician Paul Offit. But for kids who have already been infected by COVID-19, will the vaccine add meaningful immunity? “My answer to that question is yes,” Dr. Offit tells Ira. “Then you can be sure that they will then develop the kind of immunity that will likely lead to fairly long-lived protection against serious illness.” Ira and Dr. Offit also discuss the risk of monkeypox and polio spreading in schools, and how to best keep our kids safe against infectious disease this fall.   The Countdown Begins For Humanity's Return To The Moon NASA's largest and most powerful rocket ever began inching its way to Launch Pad 39B at Kennedy Space Center in Florida on Tuesday night. Over twelve years in the making, the long-delayed, over-budget Space Launch System rocket is finally nearing its first chance for liftoff at the end of this month. The August 29th targeted launch will mark the beginning of the Artemis program—NASA's series of missions designed to send humans to the Moon and, eventually, Mars. The multi-billion dollar orange rocket now stands taller than the Statue of Liberty, resembling a colossal upside-down carrot. Its maiden uncrewed flight will carry a trio of mannequins equipped with radiation sensor vests in preparation for crewed flights slated for 2024. These future missions will be the first to return people to the Moon since Apollo 17 in 1972.
