Amanda Ree is the founder of Sama Dog, a Canine Wellbeing Practitioner and speaker. As a master educator of Ayurveda, Meditation and Yoga with Dr. Deepak Chopra since 2006, Amanda has taught people from around the world how to live healthier, more natural, spiritual lives. Now, the healing wisdom includes our dog friends too! Ayurveda is such a fascinating and honestly practical way to understand our animals and look for imbalances within them. In this episode, you'll learn about the three different doshas Vata, Pitta and Kapha and how these doshas can translate to how we care for, feed and live with our dogs. Here's a sneak peek of the doshas from Sama Dog's website: Vata Body/Mind Type has the qualities of dry, light and mobile. When in balance, dogs are energetic, active and especially social. When out of balance, this can manifest as weight loss, arthritis and lacking appetite. Behaviorally, an excess of Vata can present itself as anxiety, fear or hyperactivity. If your pup is shy, insecure or anxious, his Vata might be imbalanced.   Pitta Body/Mind Type  is marked by being hot, sharp and moist. When Pitta is in balance, dogs are focused, attentive and purposeful. When out of balance, excess Pitta can create digestive disorders, rashes and other skin problems. Mental evidence of Pitta imbalance will show as aggression, intense behavior, jealousy or over-reactivity.   Kapha Body/Mind Type is represented as heavy, stable and consistent. When in balance, Kapha is reliable, strong and has great stamina. But when too much Kapha is accumulated, stagnation, lethargy or possessive behavior can show up. In the mind, it might be expressed as withdrawal, laziness, and difficulty accepting change. A four-legged friend with bad breath or some body odor may also be Kapha imbalanced. Amanda also shares her journey into Ayurveda and founding Sama Dog along with her own dog's transformation using Ayurveda.     Show Notes:  Sama Dog Dosha Quiz: samadog.com/quiz Sama Dog Website: www.samadog.com Facebook: www.facebook.com/samadogwellbeing Instagram: www.instagram.com/sama_dog_wellbeing Sama Dog Youtube Channel Twitter: twitter.com/samadogwell

As caregivers to dogs, we can often put their needs first. Especially if you have multiple dogs or work with dogs daily it can be easy to put yourself last. Holistic pet wellness will be really hard to practice if you aren't practicing your own wellness. Trust me, the day I decided to put my wellness on the same pedestal as my dogs it benefitted them in more ways than I can count.  'My dogs eat better than I do' isn't necessarily how it should be. I used to have that mantra and I was also struggling and didn't feel well. If you want to learn how I made my own wellness just as much a priority as my dogs then this episode is for you! Ep 009: Food as Medicine for Shelter Dogs with A Purposeful Rescue

Play Episode Listen Later Mar 28, 2019 36:29

"I look at buying raw food for some of the dogs in rescue the same way I look at having to buy medication or taking them to the vet"  Hillary Rosen, the founder of A Purposeful Rescue in Los Angeles, is the wave of the future when it comes to dog rescue. Hillary rescues some of the neediest dogs I've seen, and I've been working in rescue for a long time. She primarily focuses on senior and medical needs dogs. Anything from autoimmune issues to severe malnourishment - she has some amazing before and after photos of the dog's she's saved. What makes her different, and amazing might I add, is that she approaches veterinary care for the dogs by using food as medicine.  The world of shelter medicine is a much different type of medicine than a holistic approach. Shelter medicine includes overvaccination, early spay/neuter, poor diet, extremely stressful conditions, minimal supportive care, etc... and I don't fault rescues at all. Cost is a major factor when you're a non-profit organization and saving as many lives as you can is the goal. However, when an advocate like Hillary comes around who works tirelessly to approach the whole dog despite the uphill battle of rescue bill costs, this is something to be shared because it can be done!  This episode will give you insight into A Purposeful Rescue and how Hillary rescues dogs giving them support with raw diets, alternative holistic care - and more! As a certified Animal Aromatherapist, I am dedicated to using essential oils safely with animals. Some would be shocked to know that is actually unpopular with a lot of the mainstream essential oil users. I approach using essential oils with animals from a place of helping as many animals as possible through the use of aromatherapy, and that means doing so safely and effectively. If you aren't being safe about dilution, avoiding internal use, and other factors I discuss in this podcast episode, then you might not be getting effective results and ultimately causing more damage than good.  For reference, dogs have highly sensitive systems and we have to respect that! Dogs have 300 million olfactory receptors in their noses whereas humans only have about six million. The area of a dog's brain that analyzes smells is also about 40 times greater than ours. Using essential oils safely around dogs (and all other animals) should be utilized not only as a measure of caution but respect to our animals.
