The future of play on the island has never looked brighter. There is an effort, in partnership with the Bainbridge Island Parks & Recreation District and the Parks Foundation, to replace the damaged Kid’s Up Playground at Battle Point Park. If you’ve ever visited Battle Point with your kids or if you yourself remember playing on this playground as a child, you know it is one of the largest and most loved playgrounds on the island. But it has reached the end of its useful life and must be replaced for safety, and this gives us the opportunity to make some exciting improvements. Perhaps best of all, the future playground will be far more inclusive for all ages and abilities. No longer will a child or caregiver have to miss out on the fun.  Listen here as Curt Thomas and Stephanie Page describe the ongoing effort, why this work needs to take place, and the incredibly cool new features coming soon. Plus, listen for news regarding an upcoming community event where we can all pitch in to help build the future of play on the island. In this "What's Up" podcast, Battle Point Astronomical Association president Steve Ruhl and Kids Astronomy director Dr. Erica Saint Clare talk with BCB host Sonia Scaer about the upcoming Saturday May 14th planetarium shows in Battle Point Park. This month's theme is about exploring other planets that might possibly be inhabited by other life forms. Steve will present a talk on exoplanets, which are planets that orbit a star other than the Sun. Over 2000 exoplanets have been discovered since 1988! And there are many more to discover. Steve invites us to learn how we see them and what they tell us about our solar system and other habitable worlds which might be out there. Erica is offering a fun-filled children's program. Kids pre-K to 5th grade are invited with their parents to learn about the “Drake equation” and what that has to do with exoplanets and why the number 2 is important. In the hands-on activity, participants will create their own planets and match their planet to a solar system. Whether you are a beginner, experienced amateur or advanced astronomer, there's something for you at the Saturday May 14th shows. The “Kids' Shows” are at 5PM and 6PM, and the “Exoplanet” presentation is at 8PM. There is a suggested $2 donation for nonmembers of the association, $5 for families. The shows are free to members of BPAA. We are so fortunate on Bainbridge Island to live in a community with its own planetarium, big telescope, beautiful artist-built sundial, and an astronomical association with members who can and do, monthly, explain to us what we see out there in vast space. Frank Petrie, board member of the Battle Point Astronomical Association and project manager for the sundial is just one of those sky savvy guys who knows what's out there and can share his knowledge with us. In this podcast interview, Frank tells BCB host Channie Peters about the upcoming planetarium presentation at the Ritchie Observatory on Saturday January 9th at 7:30pm. Frank will talk about the history, science and art of sundials, with slides, videos and the technology inside the observatory. If you've never visited the planetarium, that is worth a visit and tour of the night sky represented in a dome-like screen on which accurate images of constellations, galaxies, planets, the moon and sun are projected on the concave surface to replicate what's happening in the sky. The projection can zoom in and out, run time fast-forward or backwards to show how the sky changes through the course of a night or a year. It can project far into the future or look back to prehistoric times when the constellations looked different. In addition to learning about how a sundial works, Dr. Erica Saint Clair will give a sundial-themed kids' presentation with fun activities. All this will be happening at the John Rudolph Planetarium in the Ritchie Observatory in Battle Point Park. Admission is free to members; for nonmembers, the suggested donation is $2/person or $5/family. The planetarium has limited seating - about 50 people - so come early to get a good seat. How do you design, build and install a 10 foot steel sundial, one of the biggest in Washington? Why have a sundial in a place where it rains a lot?  The answers to these questions and many more will be answered on Sunday, July 19th at 1 pm at the Ritchie Observatory near the southern parking areas along the service road in Battle Point Park.  The free public event is hosted by the Battle Point Astronomical Association (BPAA). In this interesting interview, meet Bill Baran-Mickle, a renowned metal artist who designed and built the sundial, and Frank Petrie, a BPAA board member and professional civil engineer, who was one of the main collaborators in the financing and engineering of the project. The elegant and massive 10-foot sundial on a 3-foot base is a stunning work of public art financed with private funds raised from individuals in our community as well as from others far afield.  This sundial represents a confluence of art and science set adjacent to Bainbridge Island's night sky observatory. This exciting dedication will be an opportunity for our community to experience this beautiful sculpture and ancient time piece together with the artist and many of those who have worked for many years to bring this installation to fruition. Bainbridge Island is home to a planetarium and the largest publicly accessible telescope in the Northwest. The Battle Point Astronomical Association (BPAA) holds regular planetarium shows and telescope viewings that are open to the public at the Edwin E. Ritchie Observatory at Battle Point Park. In this podcast, Dr. Erica Saint Clair tells BCB host Sonia Scaer about the upcoming Planetarium Show on Saturday evening June 13th at 8:30 pm. This family event about visiting the planets and exploring with planetary rovers is sure to inspire wonder and mystery. Erica's topic that evening will be “Exploring our Solar System”. If the sky is clear, visitors will be invited after the presentation to view the stars and planets of the night sky through the telescopes of BPAA astronomers. Erica explains: “From our first interplanetary landing on Venus to roving around Mars our venture to explore the solar system around us has been fraught with obstacles, heartache and unthinkable triumph. For the past 6 decades we have been exploring our solar system with landers, rovers, and probes. Spend the evening learning about the history and future of humankind's interaction with our other planets and top it off with viewing Venus, the first planet to have a probe successfully landed upon it, through our observatory telescopes.” Battle Point Astronomical Association welcomes individual and family memberships. Gain access to classes, talks and even the ability to check out telescopes allowing you to view the night sky all month long from the comfort of your own backyard. The evening is free to BPAA members. A $2 donation is suggested for nonmembers, and $5 for families.
