Inside Ascension IL's ED Throughput Playbook: 4-Minute Door-to-Doc and Better Flow

Bright Spots in Healthcare Podcast

Emergency department performance is often shaped long before a patient is admitted, or discharged. This episode features a presentation from the recently held ROI-Centered Care Summit, a half-day virtual summit produced by Bright Spots Ventures in partnership with TytoCare and the American Telemedicine Association (ATA). In this episode, Robert Sumter, PhD, FACHE, EVP / Market Chief Operating Officer at Ascension Illinois, shares how his team redesigned the emergency department front door to improve patient flow, reduce waiting, and strengthen both operational and financial performance.  Rather than treating ED congestion as a staffing problem alone, Ascension focused on redesigning throughput across the full process: front-end intake, middle-care treatment, and back-end disposition and transition. The goal was not simply to move faster, but to build a more coordinated operating model that improves access, creates capacity, and supports a better experience for patients and staff alike.  You'll hear how Ascension Illinois: Uses a "pull to full" model to reduce waiting room congestion by moving patients directly into treatment areas  Combines triage nurse and provider teamwork to accelerate assessment and initiate care earlier  Deploys discharge nurses to free up clinical staff, improve transitions, and arrange PCP follow-up Uses standing order sets, bi-hourly huddles, and dedicated patient transport to reduce bottlenecks and keep patients moving  Focuses on "heads in the bed" to move admitted patients to assigned beds in under 30 minutes and preserve ED capacity  Key topics covered: Why ED throughput is about more than speed The emergency department as the true front door of the health system Reducing overcrowding, LWOT/AMA, and staff burnout through workflow redesign Connecting patient flow to consumer satisfaction and financial sustainability Building operational discipline without compromising quality of care Ascension reported an average door-to-doc time of 4 minutes and median outpatient throughput under 145 minutes, alongside a broader focus on improving patient experience, reducing overcrowding, stabilizing staffing, and increasing capacity without simply expanding footprint.  If you're a hospital operations leader, ED executive, or health system decision-maker working to improve access, throughput, and sustainability, this episode offers a practical look at what it takes to redesign the front door of care in a way that actually performs. Link to Rob Sumter's Presentation: https://www.brightspotsinhealthcare.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/06/Improving-Patient-Access.pdf  Bio: Robert Sumter, PhD has more than 25 years of healthcare leadership experience driving operational excellence, strategic growth, and innovation across hospitals and health systems. He currently serves as Market COO for Ascension, where he oversees operations and strategic initiatives focused on improving patient outcomes, financial performance, and care delivery. Prior to Ascension, Robert served with UnitedHealth Group as the Interim Deputy COO and Chief Operating Officer for UnitedHealthcare Community & State. His leadership experience also includes executive roles at Hawaii Pacific Health, Regional One Health in Memphis, Tennessee, and Spectrum Health, where he served as Chief Operating Officer. Throughout his career, he has consistently led initiatives that improved patient satisfaction, reduced hospital length of stay, increased operational efficiency, and enhanced financial performance. Robert is widely recognized for his ability to lead large-scale operational transformations and build high-performing teams focused on delivering quality care and sustainable growth. About Bright Spots Ventures: Bright Spots Ventures exists to help healthcare organizations accelerate the adoption of what's actually working.   Healthcare does not suffer from a lack of innovation. It suffers from slow adoption, fragmented learning, and limited trust between stakeholders. For example, one health plan or provider may solve a major operational or clinical challenge while others spend the next 5–10 years rediscovering the same answer.   We close that gap by creating trusted environments where health plans, providers, and innovators can share practical strategies, operational lessons, and scalable models that drive measurable improvement.   Through the Bright Spots in Healthcare podcast, leadership councils, executive roundtables, curated events, and strategic advisory work, we help organizations build credibility, strengthen strategic relationships, and accelerate the spread of proven ideas across healthcare.

That's the ethos of Ruido Tovar; the new collaborative project between Eblis Alvarez of Meridian Brothers and Camilo Lara of the Mexican Institute of Sound.  Before releasing their debut self-titled record together, both Alvarez and Lara were known to experiment with electronics, fusing modern sounds with music styles that are typically considered traditional. Alvarez put a spin on cumbia and salsa with his band Meridian Brothers, while Lara pushed the electronica movement in Mexico forward with his project, the Mexican Institute of Sound.  Coming together as Ruido Tovar, the duo joins the Soundcheck host, John Schaefer, with their pocket-sized effects pedals and compact synthesizers to perform some new songs from their new record and discuss their journey in music thus far.  (- Sırma Munyar) Setlist: 1. Hosts: Ed Jones (Owner – Nutrition World) & Clint Powell A variety of topics all related to living a healthy life Presented by: Nutrition World www.nutritionw.com Broadcasting from the Nooga Dentistry Studio www.noogadentistry.com Production of: Whitfield Media Group www.vitalhealthradio.com Title: All About Peptides, & The Good, Bad & Ugly of GLP-1's [0:00:00]  Ed's Restaurant Story & Healthy Eating Choices Ed's recurring bit: “Where did Ed eat this week?” Long‑time favorite restaurant Epicurean. Discussion of consistent healthy ordering and making good choices at long‑standing, family‑owned restaurants. [0:03:13]  Building a Health “Team” & Ed's Top Learning Resources Tease of today's main topic: peptides with local expert Noel Lawson, NP. Ed stresses “team approach” to aging—no single practitioner has all the answers. Learners vs. non‑learners: why ongoing self‑education is critical for health. Ed's 4 favorite online resources: Mercola.com – more cutting‑edge, sometimes controversial content. DrJockers.com – accessible, visual education on ailments and nutrients. GreenMedInfo.com – indexed medical literature backing natural claims. Nutrition World Instagram – short, practical health “snippets”. Story: Nutrition World wins a surprise $10,000 award from Ancient Nutrition for #1 sales growth in the U.S., tied to belief in product quality. [0:10:38] Introducing Noel Lawson & “What Are Peptides?” Introduction of Noel Lawson, NP (Double Bridges Health & Wellness), now practicing on the Nutrition World campus. Noel's background: Transition from traditional medicine to functional medicine due to patient frustration, worsening chronic illness, and provider burnout. Goal: more prevention and root‑cause care. Orthopedic background led her to peptides. What is a peptide? Peptides are like the body's Morse code—specific chains of amino acids acting as signals. Under ~40 amino acids = peptide; longer chains = protein. Body breaks down dietary protein into amino acids and re‑assembles them into peptides as needed (e.g., for repair). As we age, the body produces fewer peptides, which is why we heal slower and are more prone to injury and inflammation. [0:19:26] Functional Medicine + Peptides: Approach, Expectations & Use Noel's approach: Combines functional medicine with peptides. Peptides only work well if the materials (sleep, nutrients, stress management, movement) are in place. Uses comprehensive labs to optimize baseline health first. Delivery & protocols: ~90% of peptides are injectable (tiny insulin‑type needle, usually daily). Some oral options exist Local injections near the injury area Expectations & timelines First 2–3 weeks: less inflammation, modest improvement in pain, sleep, and energy. 6–8 weeks: improved range of motion and strength. After 3 months: realistic minimum for true tissue change; peptides can't shortcut normal cell‑turnover timelines. [0:21:41] Specific Peptides & Treatment Logistics High‑demand musculoskeletal peptides: BPC‑157 and TB‑500: commonly used for tendons, ligaments, muscle and injury recovery. Growth hormone related peptides: Examples: samorelin, CJC, ipamorelin, tesamorelin. Stimulate the pituitary to release natural human growth hormone (HGH) rather than supplying exogenous HGH. Potential benefits: lean muscle mass, better body composition, cardiometabolic support. Monitored via IGF‑1 levels to avoid excess. PT‑141 for sexual health: Crosses the blood–brain barrier and activates pleasure/desire centers. Can cause nausea in some people; alternative forms (nasal spray, sublingual troche) may reduce side effects. How Noel works with patients: Website: doublebridgeswellness.com Contact form → email → optional free 20‑minute expectations call to see if there's a good fit. 1‑hour new patient visits, not rushed; she practices on the Nutrition World campus. [0:35:01] GLP‑1 Drugs (Ozempic, Trulicity, Mounjaro): Good, Bad & Ugly Case study: 65‑year‑old woman with pre‑existing gastroparesis put on Trulicity. Developed severe vomiting, dehydration, abdominal pain; was initially reassured to “get used to it.” Second dose led to life‑threatening pancreatitis, requiring hospitalization. Later prescribed Mounjaro by same clinic despite this history. The “Good” of GLP‑1s: In Curt's clinic, used selectively for: Poorly controlled diabetes (A1c > 10, average sugars in the 300s). Significant obesity. Can lower blood sugar and drive weight loss, by suppressing appetite The “Bad”: Common GI side effects (up to ~50% of users): Nausea, vomiting, constipation. Worsening gastroparesis (slow gut motility). Rapid weight loss often includes loss of muscle and bone, not just fat—hurts longevity and functional strength. Ozempic face: gaunt facial appearance from aggressive fat/muscle loss. Risk of hypoglycemia Visual issues, including increased macular degeneration risk. Psychiatric concerns: Emerging data on increased suicidal ideation, especially notable because trials excluded psychiatric patients. The “Ugly”: Pancreatitis, gallbladder problems. Thyroid tumors in some models. Possible cardiac atrophy. Massive growth in use: tens of millions prescribed, with many discontinuing within a year due to side effects or cost. Risk that people treat GLP‑1s as a “magic bullet” without nutrition or lifestyle change—and regain ~85% of lost weight after stopping. Curt's conclusion: GLP‑1s should be reserved for specific, high‑risk cases and paired with close coaching. For most people, there are safer, natural options. [0:50:12] “Nature's Ozempic,” Gut Health & Upcoming Events Ed and Curt on supporting GLP‑1 pathways naturally: Berberine – “nature's Ozempic” for blood sugar and metabolic support. Akkermansia (probiotic strain) – gut health, metabolic benefits, GLP‑1 stimulation. Butyrate – short‑chain fatty acid that: Supports gut lining / leaky gut repair. Improves colon health and may help increase GLP‑1. Ed reports best bowel function of his life using 2 caps/day. People who start GLP‑1s often increase supplement use, but tend to stop supplements when the drug stops. Coaching is needed so they maintain nutrition and supplementation after GLP‑1 discontinuation. Practical tips & announcements: Colonoscopies: clear protein drinks are now typically allowed on prep day—can help preserve muscle and stabilize blood sugar. Upcoming Lunch & Learn (online): Topic: “The Microbiome's Impact on Longevity”. Format: Instagram Live (@NutritionWorld), Tuesday, May 5 at 12:15 PM. Upcoming in‑person lecture at Nutrition World campus: Topic: “Taming the Yeast: Candida‑Reducing Strategies”. Thursday, May 21 at 5:30 PM. Registration via nutritionw.com → Events. Closing: Ed and Clint wrap up, reiterating their mission of clear, actionable health guidance and noting the show will be out on major podcast platforms. Ep 221: Why You're Not Making Money on Furnishings (Even When You Think You Are)

Designed for the Creative Mind

Play Episode Listen Later Apr 13, 2026 34:28

Furnishings should be one of the most profitable parts of your interior design business—but for many designers, it feels like the exact opposite. In this episode, Michelle pulls back the curtain on what's really happening behind the scenes with furniture and procurement. From underpriced markups to disorganized systems and hidden time drains, she breaks down why your margins might look fine on paper… but still leave you feeling overwhelmed and underpaid. If procurement feels like it's running you instead of supporting your business, this conversation will help you rethink your pricing, your process, and your role as a designer.   What You'll Learn Why furnishings are not a transaction—but a full process The biggest mistake designers make when pricing furniture What's actually included in procurement (hint: it's a LOT more than you think) Why a 30% markup is outdated—and what to consider instead How underpricing happens gradually (even when you think you're doing it right) The hidden cost of disorganized systems and double entry Why raising your markup alone won't fix profitability How to shift from "order taker" to trusted expert The power of presenting a complete design vs. individual pieces Two common patterns designers fall into (and how to break them)   Key Takeaways 1. Procurement is a Process, Not a Line Item Sourcing, quoting, ordering, tracking, receiving, managing damages, and client communication—procurement includes far more than just buying furniture. 2. Your Markup Must Reflect Reality If you're still using cost-plus 30%, you're likely undercharging. Your pricing should account for your time, expertise, and responsibility—not just the product. 3. Disorganization is Expensive Spreadsheets, inbox tracking, and disconnected systems create inefficiencies, errors, and unnecessary labor costs. 4. You're Not a Personal Shopper Presenting one item at a time positions you as a vendor. Presenting a full design positions you as the expert. 5. Profit Comes from Structure + Pricing You can't fix a broken process with higher prices. Real profitability happens when your systems and pricing work together.   Signs Your Procurement Process Needs Work You feel constantly "on" managing orders and updates You're tracking items in your inbox, head, or spreadsheets Projects feel chaotic behind the scenes Your profit doesn't match the effort you're putting in You avoid furnishings altogether to reduce stress   Michelle's Perspective There's no single "right" pricing model—but there is a wrong one: Any structure that doesn't properly compensate you for your time, energy, and responsibility Minimum suggested markup on wholesale furnishings: 75%+ Procurement, when structured correctly, becomes a scalable and repeatable profit center   Tools & Resources Mentioned Profit Mixer – A project management and financial system designed specifically for interior designers Combines procurement tracking + financial data Eliminates double entry between systems Provides real-time visibility into project profitability 16-Step Project Management Framework Michelle's complete process from client inquiry to project completion Coaching Options VIP Intensives 90-Day Advisory Learn more at: thedesignbakehouse.com/coaching Coming Next Week Michelle shares a special panel conversation from High Point Market on: Hiring for Profit (Not Just Growth) You'll learn: What it actually costs to hire How to know if a hire supports revenue Lessons learned (the hard way) from experienced design firm owners

Predicting Colorectal Cancer Survival: How Machine Learning Combines Clinical and Biological Clues

Colorectal cancer (CRC) ranks among the most common and lethal cancers worldwide, accounting for approximately 10% of all cancer diagnoses. While advances in prevention and treatment have improved outcomes, predicting which patients will survive remains a complex challenge—one that depends on an intricate interplay between molecular biology and clinical factors. A research paper, titled “Machine learning-based survival prediction in colorectal cancer combining clinical and biological features” was published in Volume 16 of Oncotarget by an international team of researchers, demonstrating how machine learning can integrate these two domains to achieve highly accurate survival predictions. The team's investigation demonstrates that combining clinical features—such as pathological stage, age, and lymph node status—with biological markers—including the E2F8 gene and hsa-miR-495-3p—can significantly improve the ability to predict patient survival. How Can a Sentientist Philosophy Improve the World? Guest Jamie Woodhouse Combines Reason with Compassion for All Sentient Beings

We explore an ethical worldview that may be new to a lot of people (but may capture how you really feel if you care for animals). It's called sentientism, described by our guest Jamie Woodhouse (creator of Sentientism.info and the Sentientism podcast) as “a simple, potentially unifying, philosophy or worldview. It commits to using evidence and applying reason, and grants moral consideration to all sentient beings." Basically, animals are sentient beings, as they (we) experience consciousness and feelings of pleasure or pain and suffering, which tends to be the actual basis of most moral concerns for others (rather than limiting it to species boundaries). In this 46-minute discussion in February 2026, host Carrie Freeman talks with Jamie Woodhouse (from his home in London) about what society would be like (and how our environmental policies and our political systems would be improved) if the focus of our concerns and laws were not just on human beings, but on all sentient beings, since we humans impact and often harm them so greatly -- we would be applying reason and scientific evidence (avoiding dogma, misinformation, and conspiracies) to help determine what all us animals need to flourish. "In Tune to Nature" is a weekly hour-long radio show airing Wednesdays at 6pm Eastern Time on 89.3FM-Atlanta radio and streaming worldwide on wrfg.org (Radio Free Georgia, a nonprofit indie station) hosted by me, Carrie Freeman, or friend Melody Paris. Business and finance news from the Asia-Pacific. Elon Musk is combining SpaceX and xAI in a deal that values the enlarged entity at $1.25 trillion, as the world's richest man looks to fuel his increasingly costly ambitions in artificial intelligence and space exploration. The acquisition of xAI was announced in a statement on SpaceX's website signed by Musk and confirming a Bloomberg News report earlier Monday. The deal gives SpaceX a valuation of $1 trillion, and xAI a value of $250 billion, people familiar with the matter said. The combined company's valuation was announced to employees in a memo on Monday, some of the people said earlier. Asian stocks climbed after their steepest two-day drop since April as markets found footing following sharp swings in gold and silver that sent ripples across assets. The precious metals rose in early trading. For more on what is moving the markets, we spoke to Paul Dobson, Bloomberg's Executive Editor for Asia Markets. President Donald Trump said he would roll back punitive tariffs on India in return for an agreement that Prime Minister Narendra Modi would stop buying Russian oil, easing months of tension between the two countries. Following a phone call with Modi, Trump said on social media that he would cut a US levy on Indian goods to 18% from 25%. The US President is also removing an extra punitive 25% duty applied in response to India's purchases of crude from Russia, according to officials familiar with the matter. We got reaction from Basant Sanghera, Managing Principal at the Asia Group. He spoke to Bloomberg's Paul Allen and Shery Ahn. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Salesology - Conversations with Sales Leaders

Guest Bio: Ivana Taylor has spent 35 years translating complex marketing into simple, executable strategies. She's the founder of DIYMarketers.com, where she helps entrepreneurs compete without enterprise budgets. She's a self-described AI power user who tests tools for six hours a day. And she's built follow-up systems for everyone from manufacturing companies to consultants.   Key Points: AI has fundamentally changed prospecting and outreach—making it faster, cheaper, and more targeted—but only when combined with clear strategy and direct sales fundamentals. The Old Way Is Broken Cold outreach traditionally means endless spreadsheets, bad or outdated contact data, spray-and-pray marketing (webinars, lead magnets, mass email blasts), and huge time investment with little guarantee of ROI. Buying lists or relying solely on inbound marketing is increasingly ineffective. What Still Works Direct sales and direct outreach remain the most reliable growth strategy. Success starts with absolute clarity on your Ideal Prospect; industry, role/title, geography and specific expertise or problem area. Without this clarity, AI just produces faster garbage. How AI Changes Prospect List Building AI dramatically reduces the manual labor of prospect research. Instead of hours of Googling and data entry AI can find names, companies, websites, social profiles, and sometimes contact info and AI can organize data into usable spreadsheets. AI works best in small-to-medium batches (10–50 at a time). Tools Mentioned for Prospecting & Enrichment General AI platforms (for defining criteria and searching): ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini. Spreadsheet & research automation: GenSpark (noted for strong spreadsheet creation) Data enrichment & contact info (especially B2B): Apollo.io, Hunter.io, Clay.com Outreach & CRM tools: Nimble.com (emails sent directly through Gmail for 1:1 feel) Deal-finding for tools: AppSumo (one-time purchase tools) What AI Can (and Can't) Do AI can build targeted prospect lists faster. Find websites, LinkedIn profiles, phone numbers, and some emails. Segment prospects by expertise or role. Reduce human error in outreach sequences. Ai can't guarantee perfect data (bounces still happen). Replace human judgment. Eliminate the need to review and understand each prospect. Best Practices for AI-Powered Prospecting Always review and "get your hands dirty" with the data. Read prospect websites and make personal notes. Expect some bad data—scrubbing is still required. B2B data is far easier to find than consumer data. Free versions of tools are sufficient to test and validate workflows. Outreach Strategy Matters Use AI to support structured outreach sequences, not spam. Follow a 3–5 touch email sequence. Personalization improves responses. Segment based on expertise, role, or interest. Automation reduces mistakes while preserving a personal tone.    Guest Links: FREE GIFT Business by Referral Course: https://diymarketers.trainercentralsite.com/course/business-by-referral  Promo Code "WENDY25"   AI + Sales Tools from the Podcast ChatGPT – Use it to write outreach emails, brainstorm follow-ups, or summarize client notes quickly and naturally. What if the fastest path to reliable clean electricity is not a new reactor design, but a new place to put one?   In this conversation, Paul Shapiro speaks with Elizabeth Muller, CEO of Deep Fission, about a plan to place a conventional pressurized water reactor roughly a mile underground to use geology, gravity, and groundwater for containment, pressure, and emergency cooling, potentially cutting total nuclear costs by as much as 80%. They unpack how a narrow borehole reactor could serve always-on demand from data centers and industrial users, what "proven tech combined in a new way" really means, how safety and groundwater concerns are handled through regulation and engineering practices, and the practical milestones from pilot to commercial operation so listeners can evaluate what it would take for underground nuclear to scale.   Things You Will Learn How putting a conventional reactor in a mile-deep borehole can replace major above-ground systems and cut nuclear cost drivers. Welcome to November, Cosmic Cousins. On this episode, Jeff Hinshaw of 'Cosmic Cousins'  joins forces with Taylor Ursula of 'That's So Pisces'  to explore the transits of November 2025. We enter November deep in Scorpio Season, a time of release, renewal, and emotional truth-telling. The veil is thin, the energy is potent, and transformation is inevitable. As the month unfolds, we move from Scorpio's waters into Sagittarius' fire, from introspection into expansion, from death into renewal, from mystery into meaning. Neptune Retrograde in Pisces (final return) Theme: The last veil before awakening. Tone: Dreamlike, nostalgic, spiritually dissolving. Neptune revisits the past 15 years of mystical growth. A reflective passage to integrate lessons before Neptune enters Aries next year. October 29 — Mercury Enters Sagittarius Theme: Expansive thinking, philosophical dialogue. Tone: Curious, blunt, humorous. Conversations take on big-picture meaning. Ideal for storytelling and exploring new perspectives, but avoid over-promising. November 4 — Mars Enters Sagittarius Theme: Adventure, inspired action. Tone: Fiery, restless, truth-driven. Mars fuels pursuit of ideals. Paired with Mercury, early November has preacher energy, bold, outspoken, needing freedom. November 5 — Taurus Full Moon Theme: Grounded embodiment of desire. Tone: Sensual, stabilizing. This lunation balances Scorpio season with tangible pleasure, focus on finances, creativity, and embodiment. November 6 — Venus Enters Scorpio Theme: Deep intimacy, emotional alchemy. Tone: Seductive, investigative. Venus explores loyalty, shadow, and soul bonds. Prioritize truth and passion over comfort. November 7 — Uranus Re-enters Taurus Theme: Stability through disruption. Tone: Earthquaking yet inventive. Uranus revisits Taurus for the last time in our lifetime, reinvention of finances, material structures, both personally and collectively. November 9 — Mercury Retrograde in Sagittarius Theme: Re-examining beliefs. Tone: Reflective, revealing. A time to revise philosophy, education, travel, or messaging.  November 11 — Jupiter Retrograde Theme: Faith under review. Tone: Slow growth, inner optimism. Big dreams gestate internally before expansion resumes in 2026. Practice patience and gratitude for small wins. November 15 — Vesta Enters Capricorn Theme: Sacred discipline. Tone: Grounded, devotional. Focus on legacy, sustainable effort, and aligning purpose with structure. November 18 — Mercury Re-enters Scorpio Theme: Truth-digging, intuitive perception. Tone: Investigative, psychological. Words gain emotional depth. Ideal for journaling, therapy, or uncovering hidden motives. November 19 — Scorpio New Moon Theme: Emotional renewal through release. Tone: Transformative, ritualistic. A portal for shadow work, regeneration, and reclaiming power. Tie into Mercury retrograde for re-exploring unspeakable truths. November 21 — Sun Enters Sagittarius Theme: Shift towards expansion and optimism. Tone: Celebratory, adventurous. Shifts focus from depth to horizon. Encourage laughter, storytelling, teaching, growth and expansion. November 27 — Saturn Stations Direct at 25° Pisces Theme: Maturity of faith. Tone: Grounded mysticism. Progress in integrating compassion into boundaries. Collective issues around institutions, spirituality, and accountability move forward. November 29 — Mercury Stations Direct at 20° Scorpio Theme: Clarity returns. Tone: Sharp intuition, empowered communication. Fog lifts, understanding and resolution emerge. Strong day for declarations and agreements. November 30 — Venus Enters Sagittarius Theme: Playful love, cross-cultural beauty. Tone: Flirtatious, inspired, generous. Relationships and creative connections lighten through expansion. Desire for freedom and shared growth blooms. Late November — Mars Conjunct Juno at 17° Sagittarius Theme: Partnerships aligned through mission. Tone: Purpose-driven union. Combines desire with commitment, amplifying collaboration in relationships or creative projects.
