Today we welcome Author Nancy Blakey Nancy was born in Idaho and raised in the Pacific Northwest where she now lives on an island in Puget Sound. In her adult life she married in Scotland and lived in the Highlands, then they moved to South Australia. Later she spent summers in Alaska with her family during the Bristol Bay salmon season. Nancy and her husband Greg have four children. While raising her family she had a syndicated kids' activity column called Mudpies that was collected and published into five books. Years later, after Greg's premature death, she was drawn to spend more time outdoors, and By the Shore and The Mountains Are Calling were born. These guide books encourage people to explore the wonders of the Pacific Northwest and make memories--one of the most precious assets we possess. Nancy believes there is no rewind. Today we welcome author Anisa Ashabi “If my life were a TV show, Chaz Humbert would be the bad guy.” Roxie Nazari's had it. She's been subjected to Chaz Humbert's creepy come-ons and inappropriate antics for three years—and she's not his only victim. With teachers, guidance counselors, and school administration unwilling to end the harassment, Roxie exacts revenge on an anger-fueled impulse. What she doesn't realize is how her actions will completely change her life--and her worldview. Turns out, revenge is not so sweet, not just because of the guilt she feels, but because her sentence is an in-school suspension…with the perp himself! Trapped in close quarters with Chaz, Roxie is determined not to be fooled by the sudden drastic change in his behavior. But when Chaz reveals an unexpected truth, both he and Roxie hurtle down an entirely new path of self-discovery. Meanwhile, they aren't the only ones in their school—or town—with problems. Old friends, new friends, and family are all struggling with their own first steps into adulthood. Roxie's eyes are opened to the narrow-mindedness and limitations of her hometown. Will things ever improve? And can a girl who just started high school make a difference? An American coming-of-age story set against the social backdrop of the 2000s, Finding Chaz illustrates the pitfalls of adolescence with raw humor, honesty, and heart. Today we welcome Dawn Janow & Frank with their statements on why we should vote NO on the upcoming Aquatics Bond Measure. This is a two part podcast, please join me for both episodes. Ray Williamson Pool Bond Informational Meetings July 15 @ 6:30 pm - 7:30 pm Event Series (See All) If you would like to learn more about the proposed Ray Williamson Pool Bond Measure that will be on the August 6th ballot, join us at an upcoming public meeting: Monday, July 15, 6:30 pm Meeting location: Don Nakata Pool 8521 Madison Ave. Bainbridge Island Built in 1970, the Ray Williamson Pool has been in continual operation for 54 years. Due to aging infrastructure, the Park District began investigating options for renovation or replacement of the Ray Williamson pool in 2016. In 2022, the District engaged Stemper Architectural Collaborative to complete a comprehensive assessment of the pool. The study concluded that renovation was the most fiscally responsible option. Renovation did not include increasing capacity, which was one of the goals identified over the past decade. In December of 2023, an idea was presented to the District to add two additional lanes and change the tank depth while completing the renovation. This idea has been vetted and found to be a feasible option by Stemper. The funding plan for the original project will be a combination of district reserves, fundraising, grants and loans, committing the District to extended loan payments for a minimum of 15 years. The funding plan for the expansion project is only possible with a bond measure, which would eliminate the need for a loan. The use of District reserves and fundraising is anticipated to be less. To complete the project, the District will need to secure a loan and commit up to $2.5 M in reserves. Passage of the bond eliminates the need for a loan and reduces the burden on reserves. Fundraising in either scenario could further reduce the impact on District resources. If passed, the bond measure would: Expand the existing pool, adding two additional swimming lanes. Create a consistent pool depth to increase safety and meet user needs. What would the proposed bond measure cost if it passes? Estimated bond tax rate of $0.06 per $1,000 of assessed property value. The owner of a home assessed at $1,000,000 would pay $60 per year or $5 per month. What will happen if the proposed bond measure does not pass? The Ray Williamson Pool will be renovated in its current configuration. For more information on the Ray Williamson Pool Project, please visit our Current Projects page. Meet Greg Nance Greg Nance grew up in Kitsap and is on a mission to pay it forward for the next generation of Kitsap kids. He is a youth mentor, distance runner, and nonprofit leader recognized by President Obama. Greg grew up in a middle class union family on Bainbridge Island and worked as a landscaper, house painter, and firewood splitter. The son of a social worker and public defender, Greg learned the value of hard work and community service around the dinner table. His Mom spent over 20 years as a nursing home social worker ensuring seniors across Kitsap have access to quality care and are treated with dignity. His Dad was a Seattle Seahawks beer vendor before helping unionize the Seattle Public Defender to ensure everyone, including the poor and marginalized, are provided effective legal representation as guaranteed by our constitution. He grew up idolizing his grandfathers: Grandpa Charlie, a Marine who fought at Iwo Jima; and Grandpa Kick, a Navy Seabee who fought at Okinawa. WWII cut both their educations short so they stressed the gift of public education and the importance of lifelong learning. Greg attended Kitsap K-12 public schools and graduated from Bainbridge High. He played baseball, basketball, and football across the peninsula and excelled in track and debate. During his senior year at BHS, he was the 3A Washington State Debate Champion and proudly represented Team USA as 1 of 5 All-American debaters at the 2007 World Championships in Seoul, South Korea. Following competition, Greg loved telling debaters from Pakistan, Scotland, and Japan about the peninsula west of Seattle that he was lucky to call home. Congressman Jay Inslee nominated Greg to the United States Military Academy at West Point in December 2006, but he decided to attend UChicago after earning a scholarship. He was elected Student Government President at UChicago and was named Washington State's 2010 Harry S Truman Scholar — the Presidential Memorial to Public Service. In 2011 he earned a full ride to Cambridge University where he studied Management and innovation as a Gates Scholar. Despite early successes, Greg also struggled. Following the loss of his beloved Grandpa Charlie, Greg battled depression and began self-medicating with alcohol at age 16. He tried to quit drinking a hundred times before finally getting sober on December 29, 2011. Now sober for over 4300 days, Greg loves sharing lessons learned while working to help young people build resilience and compassion. Greg recently completed a 3,156 mile run from the Atlantic to the Pacific for youth mental health (read the Seattle Times recap). He is the CEO of Run Far Foundation, a nonprofit building youth resilience coast-to-coast. He founded Dyad Mentorship and Moneythink, organizations that helped students earn over $27 million in university scholarships. President Obama recognized Moneythink as a “Champion of Change” at the White House on March 15, 2012. He has been working to protect Puget Sound since 1995. His 6th grade science class raised and released salmon eggs (the chum salmon now returning from the Pacific are 7th generation). He represents Kitsap on the Citizens Advisory Group for the Hood Canal Coordinating Council, our region's Lead Entity on salmon recovery. He is working to mobilize the next generation of environmentalists to save our salmon and protect Puget Sound. Greg is a frequent speaker at Kitsap public schools because he loves inspiring kids with adventure stories like running 7 marathons in 7 days on 7 continents. He became the first person to ever run 86 miles — and climb 14,410ft. — from Puget Sound to the summit of Mt. Rainier. Greg's running career peaked in 2016 when his beloved Seattle Seahawks named him “12 Ambassador” and featured his ultrarunning in TV commercials (watch here). Greg now proudly represents Kitsap as State Rep — he's working for working families, like the one he grew up in. Let's work together to Fix our Ferries, Protect Puget Sound, and fully fund public schools so the next generation of Kitsap kids can grow up happy and healthy!

Today we welcome back Bill Marler! In 1993, Marler represented 9-year-old Brianne Kiner in litigation against Jack in the Box following an E. coli O157:H7 outbreak, securing a $15.6 million settlement.[3] He subsequently directed his practice toward foodborne illness, representing many more people affected by diseases such as E. coli, hepatitis A, and Salmonellosis. He has been involved in litigation relating to most of the large foodborne illness outbreaks in the United States, representing individuals against large companies such as Chili's, Kentucky Fried Chicken,[4] Dole, and ConAgra.[5] Marler is also involved with OutBreak, a nonprofit organization under the auspices of Marler Clark. In this capacity he travels extensively, discussing foodborne illness litigation and related issues with public health groups, fair associations, and food industry groups.[6] As a proponent of improved food regulation, Marler has been asked to speak to numerous groups to address the subject, including testimony to both the California State Senate Governmental Organization Committee[7] and the U.S. House Committee on Energy and Commerce.[8] Marler's involvement in the 1993 Jack in the Box E. coli outbreak is detailed in author Jeff Benedict's book Poisoned: The True Story of the Deadly E. Coli Outbreak That Changed the Way Americans Eat. "Poisoned". Official website of Jeff Benedict. Retrieved May 30, 2021. The book has been adapted into Marler is featured heavily in "Poisoned: The Dirty Truth About Your Food" a documentary that builds upon the book "Poisoned" by Jeff Benedict. The documentary delves into the public and private influences that shape decisions regarding food safety in the United States. It traces the origins of foodborne illnesses, starting with the Jack in the Box E. coli outbreak in 1992-1993 and continuing to the present day. The film is directed by Stephanie Soechtig and premiered at 2023 Tribeca Film Festival, and is set to be released on Netflix on August 2, 2023.[9] In 2009, Marler founded Food Safety News to "fill a void" in food safety's media coverage. He is a regular contributor to the Food Poison Journal. In January 2016, The Daily Meal named him one of "America's 50 Most Powerful People in Food for 2016".[10] His professional blog was listed by the American Bar Association as one of the top 100 legal blogs.[11] And in The New Yorker piece "A Bug in the System", journalist Wil S. Hylton referred to Marler as "the most prominent and powerful food-safety attorney in the country."[12] According to Marler's own estimation he has won over $600 million in food safety judgements for his clients.[13] A January 19, 2020 article in The Washington Post detailed Marler's fight for USDA regulations that would ban meat contaminated with certain Salmonella strains from being sold.[14] Poisoned on Netflix Marler Clark website The B.I.STANDER Podcast is a conversational podcast unique to Bainbridge Island and Seattle Washington, that covers the Arts, Society & Culture told through Human Interest stories. Today we welcome Cory Bennett C.Bennett | Iconic Neo-Pop Artist | b. 1986 “Iconic Neo-POP”, artist C.Bennett combines pop themes, iconic images and neo-expressionist techniques to produce work that is wary of modern society. Born and raised in Las Vegas, NV he has his own unique style of art that combines an urban “street” style with the use of found-media, providing the artist with an endless supply of complex and relevant subject matter. each painting allows the viewer to step into a nostalgic dream and the creative mind of the artist. “My artistic message is without judgment — both the outwardly obvious interpretation and the more subtle critical interpretation are equally valid. Rather, I intend my work simply as an exploration of dichotomy and an exercise in encouraging viewers to recognize the duality of all things.” C.Bennett studied at CalPoly San Luis Obispo and graduated with a Graphic communications degree in 2009. He has participated in art events worldwide. From Art Basel Miami to Art Basel Shanghai. He had his first museum showing at Coral Spring Museum of Art in 2017. He has created stunning large scale murals along the West Coast. Anyone who has met Bennett knows of his glowing personality focused on spreading positivity through art. Today we welcome Stephen Rowley author of The Lost Coin The coin lost in the river is found in the river.-Zen kōan In The Lost Coin, Stephen Rowley shares his lifelong journey-searching for his birth parents, seeking his true identity, and discovering his soul's calling. We join him when, as a boy growing up in Iowa, he visits Chicago for the first time and is shocked by blatant racial segregation and sprawling urban poverty. We see Stephen as a young athlete sustaining a life-changing injury, then becoming radicalized at the University of Wisconsin, entering the field of education at Stanford, and becoming a visionary school administrator before being fired by a vindictive Silicon Valley school board. He plays golf with a Tibetan lama, and experiences transcendence in a vivid dream, ultimately becoming a psychotherapist in his sixties. We witness the heart-rending scene when he and his wife adopt their own son, and we join him for a poignant reunion with his birth mother, who, it turns out, had desperately hoped he might appear in her life after she'd given him up for adoption. As we accompany Stephen Rowley on this adventurous and reflective journey, we come to understand more deeply the trauma engendered when separating mother from child, and the unspoken restlessness and yearning for connection many adoptees feel. "It is my hope," he writes, that we all "may discover the unique capacity within us to heal and even thrive, not in spite of the wounds we carry, but because of them." George is the director and lead singer of the ‘Lelala Dance Society', a family of traditional singers and dancers of the Kwakwaka'wakw (Kwakiutl) Nation. 'Lelala' means 'traveling from here to there' in the Kwakwala language and reflects the fact that George and his dancers have traveled to over a dozen countries as cultural arts ambassadors sharing their deep connection to the NW ecology. George has been in charge of assembling a talented group of NW Native culture keepers in Washington State and British Columbia to collaborate closely with talented NW Native artists to produce several performance tours and films. Craig was raised in Washington State where he trained and worked as a performer and puppet maker in European, Turkish and Balinese mask and puppetry styles. He completed an apprenticeship with internationally known NW Coast Native caver Duane Pasco, and another with dancer and cultural expert Chief Henry Seaweed of the Kwakwaka'wakw Nation. Craig owns and operates an arts business called The Maskery, producing masks for sale and mask theater performances across the US and in many parts of the world. Joe Ives is an internationally renown artist and the lead designer in a well respected Port Gamble S'Klallam family of artists. He has also designed many masks that illustrate the stories he likes to tell. Joe has heard many stories from his grandmother and other first Nations elders. Joe joined the Hamumu Arts Collective to promote the rich stories, values, arts and culture of his Northwest Native S'Klallam community. Joe designed and invited James Smith, a Suquamish tribal member and Craig Jacobrown to create this array of Salmon Story masks and puppets to be used in the films 'Natural Gifts' and 'Gift of Salmon'. The 'Ives' style is internationally recognized and particularly well known throughout Washington State. Joe Ives carvings are on display throughout State Indian reservations, tribal casinos and private collections. Today we welcome Paula Petry Paula Petry, PhD, is an author, speaker, presenter, and energy medicine practitioner. She specializes in stress and burnout, grief and loss, mindfulness, and personal empowerment. Dr. Paula Petry's journey of self-discovery, healing, and personal empowerment began with the birth of her daughter, Alexandra, who was born with a severe disability. In lieu of accepting the fate prescribed by physicians, other health professionals, and educators, Paula chose to pave a new path for not only her daughter, but for many others. She became a strong advocate to meet the needs of her daughter and in that she formed what is now one of the leading parent advocacy organization in the country. She brought that knowledge and her passion for family-centered care services to her faculty position at the University of Miami, School of Medicine, Department of Pediatrics— for over a decade preparing pediatricians to work with children with special health care needs. Her daughter's death brought great loss, suffering, and new beginnings. She studied energy medicine, sound healing, mindfulness, and somatic therapies to heal. She now finds purpose and meaning in helping others pave their path forward to their own bright beginnings. Dr. Petry has provided hundreds of energy medicine healing sessions to individuals with chronic pain, grief, depression, anxiety, burnout, and high levels of stress. Individuals consistently report higher satisfaction with their lives, a sense of renewal, and a new found purpose and meaning in their lives. Dr. Petry has presented to large audiences as well as small groups, totaling over 10,000 individuals. Presentations are designed to meet the needs of the organization on topics including stress and burnout, grief and loss, life after life, mindfulness strategies for well-being, shifting limiting beliefs, and wellness strategies to build one's inner power. Dr. Petry is responsible for the development of an annual Women's Summit for caregivers held in Orlando, Florida each year sponsored by the Family Café, Inc. This mind, body, spirit conference is designed to bring evidence-based wellness strategies that result in lowered stress and anxiety for caregivers of individuals with disabilities. Sponsors include the Department of Education, Department of Health, and private donors. Dr. Petry uses rigorous evaluation methods to determine the effectiveness of her conferences, workshops and retreats. Using her Joyful Living Instrument, the pre and post evaluation results consistently show a significant improvement in their levels of mindfulness and joyfulness. Mr. Vice President, Mr. Speaker, Members of the Senate, and of the House of Representatives: Yesterday, December 7th, 1941 -- a date which will live in infamy -- the United States of America was suddenly and deliberately attacked by naval and air forces of the Empire of Japan. The United States was at peace with that nation and, at the solicitation of Japan, was still in conversation with its government and its emperor looking toward the maintenance of peace in the Pacific. Indeed, one hour after Japanese air squadrons had commenced bombing in the American island of Oahu, the Japanese ambassador to the United States and his colleague delivered to our Secretary of State a formal reply to a recent American message. And while this reply stated that it seemed useless to continue the existing diplomatic negotiations, it contained no threat or hint of war or of armed attack.1 It will be recorded that the distance of Hawaii from Japan makes it obvious that the attack was deliberately planned many days or even weeks ago. During the intervening time, the Japanese government has deliberately sought to deceive the United States by false statements and expressions of hope for continued peace. The attack yesterday on the Hawaiian islands has caused severe damage to American naval and military forces. I regret to tell you that very many American lives have been lost. In addition, American ships have been reported torpedoed on the high seas between San Francisco and Honolulu. Yesterday, the Japanese government also launched an attack against Malaya. Last night, Japanese forces attacked Hong Kong. Last night, Japanese forces attacked Guam. Last night, Japanese forces attacked the Philippine Islands. Last night, the Japanese attacked Wake Island. And this morning, the Japanese attacked Midway Island. Japan has, therefore, undertaken a surprise offensive extending throughout the Pacific area. The facts of yesterday and today speak for themselves. The people of the United States have already formed their opinions and well understand the implications to the very life and safety of our nation. As Commander in Chief of the Army and Navy, I have directed that all measures be taken for our defense. But always will our whole nation remember the character of the onslaught against us. No matter how long it may take us to overcome this premeditated invasion, the American people in their righteous might will win through to absolute victory. I believe that I interpret the will of the Congress and of the people when I assert that we will not only defend ourselves to the uttermost, but will make it very certain that this form of treachery shall never again endanger us. Hostilities exist. There is no blinking at the fact that our people, our territory, and our interests are in grave danger.
Today we welcome Bill Marler Meet William Marler An accomplished attorney and national expert in food safety, William (Bill) Marler has become the most prominent foodborne illness lawyer in America and a major force in food policy in the U.S. and around the world. Marler Clark, The Food Safety Law Firm, has represented thousands of individuals in claims against food companies whose contaminated products have caused life-altering injury and even death. He began litigating foodborne illness cases in 1993 when he represented Brianne Kiner, the most seriously injured survivor of the historic Jack in the Box E. coli O157:H7 outbreak, in her landmark $15.6 million settlement with the company. The 2011 book, Poisoned: The True Story of the Deadly E. coli Outbreak that Changed the Way Americans Eat, by best-selling author Jeff Benedict, chronicles the Jack in the Box outbreak and the rise of Bill Marler as a food safety attorney. For the last 26 years, he has represented victims of nearly every large foodborne illness outbreak in the United States. He has filed lawsuits against such companies as Chili's, Chi-Chi's, Cargill, ConAgra, Dole, Excel, Golden Corral, KFC, McDonald's, Odwalla, Peanut Corporation of America, Sheetz, Sizzler, Supervalu, Taco Bell, and Wendy's, securing over $700,000,000 for victims of E. coli, Salmonella, Listeria, and other foodborne illnesses. Among the most notable cases he has litigated, Bill counts those of nineteen-year-old dancer Stephanie Smith, who was sickened by an E. coli-contaminated hamburger that left her brain-damaged and paralyzed, and Linda Rivera, a fifty-seven-year-old mother of six from Nevada, who was hospitalized for over 2 years after she was stricken with what her doctor described as “the most severe multi-organ [bowel, kidney, brain, lung, gall bladder, and pancreas] case of E. coli mediated HUS I have seen in my extensive experience.” New York Times reporter Michael Moss won a Pulitzer Prize for his coverage of Smith's case, which was settled by Cargill in 2010 for an amount “to care for her throughout her life.” Linda's story hit the front page of the Washington Post and became Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid's touchstone for successfully moving forward the Food Safety Modernization Act in 2010. Today we welcome Robert Chelsea Brigham Surgeons Perform First Full Face Transplant for Black Patient Boston, MA — Robert Chelsea, 68, became the first black patient, and the oldest, to receive a full face transplant in a procedure at Brigham and Women's Hospital this July. Chelsea, a Los Angeles area resident, suffered burns over 60 percent of his body and face after his car was struck by a drunk driver in 2013. The 16-hour surgery, involving a team of over 45 surgeons, nurses, anesthesiologists, residents and research fellows and led by Bohdan Pomahac, MD, was the ninth face transplant procedure at the Brigham and the 15th nationwide. “Despite being the oldest face transplant patient at 68, Robert is progressing and recovering remarkably fast,” said Pomahac, the Roberta and Stephen R. Weiner Distinguished Chair in Surgery and director of Plastic Surgery Transplantation at Brigham Health. “We are looking forward to seeing a significant improvement in Robert's quality of life.” The wait for a donor was longer than that of previous Brigham face transplant recipients due to the effort to find a match that would work for Chelsea's skin tone. Chelsea is the first known black full face transplant recipient. Another black patient in Paris received a partial face transplant in 2007. “It is vitally important for individuals of all races and ethnicities to consider organ donation, including the donation of external grafts, such as face and hands,” said Alexandra Glazier, President and CEO of New England Donor Services. “Unlike internal organs, the skin tone of the donor may be important to finding a match.” “May God bless the donor and his family who chose to donate this precious gift and give me a second chance,” said Chelsea. “Words cannot describe how I feel. I am overwhelmed with gratitude and feel very blessed to receive such an amazing gift.” Chelsea's injuries stemmed from a fiery freeway accident outside of LA in August 2013. Chelsea was sitting in his overheated vehicle on the side of the road when his car was struck by a drunk driver. The vehicle burst into flames, burning Chelsea and drastically altering both his physical function and his appearance. Chelsea remained in a coma for six months and hospitalized for a year and a half. During that time, Chelsea underwent more than 30 surgeries. His lips, part of his nose, and left ear were unable to be reconstructed. After evaluation by Dr. Pomahac, and an extensive screening process, he was listed for a face transplant in March 2018. Data from a follow-up study of face transplant recipient outcomes, recently published in the New England Journal of Medicine, found that the first Brigham face transplant patients experienced robust return of motor and sensory function of their face, as well as functionality, which allowed them to socially reintegrate in a way that would not have been possible before the transplant. These data indicate that Chelsea is likely to achieve near normal sensation and about 60 percent restoration of facial motor function within a year, including the ability to eat, smile and speak normally. “Our previous experience has demonstrated that face transplantation is a viable option for patients with severe disfigurement and limited function who have no alternatives,” said Pomahac. “As we continue to expand this treatment to more patients, we are exploring the ways in which we can quantify how much benefit our patients receive as well as identifying opportunities to limit the risks of this transplant through new immunosuppression protocols.” The Brigham has long been recognized as one of the world's leaders in transplantation, having performed the first successful human organ donor transplant, a kidney, in 1954, the first heart transplant in New England in 1984, and the first heart-lung transplant in Massachusetts in 1992. The Brigham performed the nation's first full face transplant in 2011, and the first bilateral hand transplant in New England in 2011. “I am forever indebted to Brigham and Women's Hospital, the most amazing surgical and nurse team ever assembled. The place oozes compassion,” said Chelsea.” More information about Robert Chelsea and face transplantation at Brigham and Women's Hospital.
