Struggling to get the words out, MacDonald haltingly and breathlessly repeated his address –– 544 Castle Drive –– along with the word “stabbed.” When the MPs arrived at 544 Castle Drive minutes later, they encountered a scene of staggering brutality. MacDonald's wife and two young daughters had been hacked and beaten to death in their respective bedrooms, there was blood on the walls and ceiling of the apartment, and someone had written the word “PiG,” in blood, on the headboard of the bed in the master bedroom. On seeing that word, “PiG,” military investigators all had the same thought: “PiG” is what had been written in blood on Sharon Tate's front door six months earlier, after the Manson Family had slaughtered Tate and her houseguests on Cielo Drive, in Los Angeles. Had the Manson Family come to North Carolina?If Jeffrey MacDonald was to be believed, perhaps they had. MacDonald told investigators that a group of at least three men and one woman had broken into the apartment and attacked him and his family. The Book of Job asks some of life's most challenging questions... and the answers it gives call us to trust the Lord. But is there any benefit to trusting Him and obeying Him? Definitely! Military correspondent Emanuel Fabian and environment reporter Sue Surkes join host Amanda Borschel-Dan on today's episode. To start the program, the panel weighs in briefly with thoughts on King Charles III's coronation yesterday. Unfortunately, over this weekend, there were numerous reports of violent incidents and murder. Fabian puts the numbers in the context of the past bloody week, as well as the total murdered this year. On Thursday, two Palestinians accused of killing Lucy Dee and her daughters Maia and Rina in a shooting attack in the Jordan Valley last month were shot dead by Israeli troops in the West Bank city of Nablus along with a third Palestinian gunman. Leo Dee, the husband and father of the victims, said he was grateful the operation was “done in a way that has not endangered the lives of Israeli soldiers, nor innocent Palestinian civilians — in a way that only the Israeli army knows how to do.” Fabian explains how the operation was carried out. Last week Surkes wrote about two environmental reports that indicate that Israel isn't living up to its promises. The first reviewed existing data through the end of 2021 and states that Israel isn't fulfilling its global warming emissions targets. The second report discusses an ombudsman's findings on pesticide misuse and lack of environmental enforcement. She describes a dire situation. For years, Surkes has followed the building and promised opening of the Tolerance Museum in Jerusalem. When will it finally be opening its doors? Israel Aerospace Industries announced Thursday that it has been developing its first large autonomous underwater vehicle. It's called BlueWhale and it is meant to gather covert intelligence and detect enemy threats. Fabian describes its capability. Answers to suffering are not easy or simple and today, as we look at Job 39-41, the Lord helps Job understand His wisdom and power and that even when we do not understand what God is doing, He has a wise and good plan. DISCUSSION AND STUDY QUESTIONS: 1.    Today's passage continues the opening instructions from Job 38 that we looked at yesterday. What did we discuss regarding the importance of knowing “who” the Lord is?  2.    The main focus of Job 39 is on the Lord's work in creation. What kinds of things does the Lord focus on? How does His designs in creation reflect His sovereignty? 3.    When the Lord asks Job what he has to say for himself in Job 40:2, what was Job's answer? What does this show us about Job's understanding of himself in relation to God? How is this different from the people who proudly predict what they will say to God when they finally meet Him? 4.    What did the podcast mention about the difficulty of knowing who the animals are in Job 40 & 41? 5.    How is the “behemoth” described in chapter 40, verses 15, 19, 20, 23 and 24? What do you think this was? 6.    How is the “leviathan” described in chapter 41, verses 7, 10, 13? What do you think this was? 7.    The ultimate point of all these instructions about animals is that everything is under God's control and operates according to His design. How might these truths help a person who is struggling to understand why bad things happen? 8.    The podcast moves on to Isaiah 45:20-24. According to the podcast, how does this passage help us understand God's wisdom and His ways? What will all people one day say about Him?  9.    As we wrap up today's study, we saw that Job repented of his irreverent questioning of God. One of life's most universal questions is "Why?" That's the question Job was asking all along, but today we find out that the question he really should have been asking was "Who? Join us for today's study in a powerful passage dealing with questions we sometimes ask.  DISCUSSION AND STUDY QUESTIONS: 1.    Although we have blitzed through the book of Job, at this point you probably have a good idea of the situation. What is going on in Job's life? 2.    What kinds of answers did Job's friends offer? Why were these answers not helpful? What were they based on? How does the Lord describe their prattling in verse 2? 3.    Verse 1 tells us that the Lord answered Job out of a whirlwind. Think about the last time you were in a windstorm, what would any conversation have been like with all that noise? How does this help us understand that this was truly the Lord speaking and not just some vague “impression” that Job might have had? 4.    The podcast points out that one of the most common words throughout this passage is the word “Who?” It occurs 13 times in verses 2, 5, 25, 36, and 37. Glance over these verses. Who is the “who” referring to?  5.    How does this help us understand shifting our questions of “why?” to “who?” Why is the answer of “who” necessary to understand the answer to the question “why?” How is the answer of “who” foundational to the answers of every other question? 6.    Look over these verses. What do they tell us about the Lord's power and character? How does knowing about His character help us trust Him when we still have unanswered questions? 7.    What questions of “why?” are you facing now? By Job 19, Job thinks he's at death's door and yet, he has total hope in his coming Redeemer who is God. Join us for a special excursus study in one of the Key Verses in the Entire Old Testament! 1.    In verse 25, when Job says that he “knows” his Redeemer lives, what does this word “know” indicate about the depth of Job's certainty regarding this? Where do you think this kind of conviction comes from? How are you pursuing this kind of conviction in your own life?  2.    In verse 25, what is a “redeemer”? How does Galatians 4:4-5 help us understand this concept more?  3.    According to Colossians 1:13-14, what has Christ's redemption accomplished?  4.    The podcast explained that the word for “redemption” in verse 25 is a specific word “ga'al” which is used when the two people (the redeemER and the redeemED) who were related to each other. What does this tell us about the nature of Jesus? How does this tie back to the Lord's promise in Genesis 3:15?  5.    In verse 25, Job says that his redeemer “lives”. Given that Job was written well over 1,000 years before Christ, why is this a startling pronouncement?  6.    What event is Job talking about in verse 26? What is Job saying that he believes?  7.    Look up Isaiah 26:29, Ezekiel 37:12-14 and Daniel 12:2. What do these passages tell us about the resurrection?  8.    According to the podcast, how is the word “see” that's used in verse 27 a different word than the word “see” that's used in verse 26? Deputy speaker of Kyiv's parliament Olena Kondratiuk was in Israel on Monday to ask for Israel's help in the release of tens of thousands of Ukrainian children taken illegally from their homes to Russia. Berman explains what aid she is requesting and what the country can do. Foreign Minister Eli Cohen and the European Union's foreign policy chief Josep Borrell met in Brussels on Tuesday to bury the hatchet after a period of strained relations with the EU. Why now? The Knesset reconvened this week and anti-judicial overhaul protestors ramped up their demonstrations with Thursday's nationwide Day of Disruptions. While these protests were going on nationwide, a panel appearing on Israel's Channel 14 talked about the upcoming protest outside former Supreme Court president Aharon Barak's house that night. Barak, the panel agreed, is the puppet master who is pulling all the strings in the anti-judicial overhaul movement. He is to blame for the mess the country is in and only if Barak agrees to the reform, they said, will all protests stop. Even as Fox News captures headlines throughout the world for skewed coverage, Israel's version, Channel 14, is slowly capturing an increasingly larger audience. So, I sat down this week with Zman Yisrael editor Biranit Goren to make sense of Israel's Hebrew-language media map. A three-decade veteran of Israeli journalism, Goren started out as an investigative reporter at the Ha'aretz group, moved on to become the news and magazine editor at Yedioth Aharonot and then editor-in-chief of Ma'ariv's website. Goren also crossed into the tech world, developing and maintaining dozens of media websites -- including The Times of Israel and Zman Israel, where she is also the editor-in-chief since its foundation. Now celebrating four years, Zman Israel, The Times of Israel's sister Hebrew website, covers politics, economy, environment, diplomacy and the rule of law.
