The novel follows Inspector Killian Tong's investigation of a brutal murder against a backdrop of political chaos, police tensions, and also personal conflict – Killian's half-sister is a radical protester. John and Simon also discuss the background to the 2019 protests, including the National Security Law and the earlier 2014 Umbrella Movement. There is a lie that has been quietly holding you back, and it is not the one you think. You already know the prosperity gospel is a lie. But there is a second lie sitting on the other end of that same spectrum, and it is the one that got me. For 12 years it made me feel guilty for teaching women how to build profitable businesses. In this episode I am naming it out loud, walking you through what Scripture actually says, and telling you the story of the assignment nobody around me understood. This one is for the entrepreneurs. If God gave you a business idea, a business vision, that restless entrepreneurial spirit that not everybody carries, this episode is written with you in mind. I am naming a lie I have believed almost the entire time I have been a believer. Most of us can spot the prosperity gospel from a mile away. The idea that God's goal for your life is to make you rich, and that wealth is the proof you are pleasing Him, is a lie from the pit of hell. But there is a second lie living on the opposite end of that same spectrum, and it is the one that got me. It sounds spiritual. It says that if you are broke, scraping by, or buried in debt, you must be living a more godly life. Both ends breed the same pride. I have watched prosperity gospel people look down on the broke, and I have watched people with a poverty mindset look down on the wealthy. Neither one glorifies God. Here is why that second lie is so costly for us specifically. When you are called into business, generating revenue is not greed. It is the assignment. If you have no revenue and you have overhead, and every single one of us has overhead, you slide into debt fast. I have lived there. And I cannot find one place in Scripture where being in debt glorifies God. Owe no one anything except to love one another. The borrower is servant to the lender. When the widow in 2 Kings went to Elisha about the debt that was about to cost her her sons, God did not hand her money. He told her to take the little she had, multiplied it, and sent her out to sell it, pay the debt, and live on the rest. That is the essence of business right there. So the real question is never how much money you want. The question is what has God called you to do, and are you being diligent in it. If He called you into nonprofit, your assignment includes asking for money. If He called you into business, your assignment includes creating solutions, solving problems, and selling. There are entrepreneurs sitting on a God given calling who are too afraid to start, or too afraid to ask for the sale, and they call it humility. It is not humility. It is a lie standing in the way of obedience. I share the personal side of this too. My year in discipleship school was five hours a day in the Word, at a mission equipping school built to send people overseas. I could not go. I had just been diagnosed with an autoimmune disease and had extreme dietary restrictions, so the mission field was closed to me. I watched people around me quit careers, raise funds, and go. And I felt like I was not doing God's work. What I did instead was start a podcast. Nobody in that school looked at a podcast and saw a mission field. But it was an assignment, and I obeyed it. Over 260 episodes later, millions of downloads later, hundreds of people have told me they gave their lives to Christ or recommitted their lives to Christ through it. Those are only the ones I know about. I also tell you about the email that got under my skin. I hosted a beautiful business event for my ladies at the Ritz Carlton. Elegant setting, incredible service, and the most God centered conversations, with lives changing in front of me. Then came an email from a missionary telling me it was not godly to host a business event in a place like that. And I listened. I let it shrink me. That is the danger of handing your assignment over to people who were never given it, even well meaning believers who mean you no harm at all. If you have been quietly wondering whether your calling counts, whether helping people with their marriage or their health or their finances is spiritual enough to matter, hear me. When you help someone get back into integrity in an area of their life, you free them to do what God put them here to do. That is kingdom work. And the revenue that comes from it is not the point, it is the fuel. More to give to the church and to those in need. More time for the Bible study, the street corner, the video, the ministry you cannot get to while you are trading every hour for a paycheck. I have had a vision on my board for six years now. A thousand women building six figure incomes, and even ten percent of that flowing to the kingdom is millions of dollars a year. This lie has been standing between me and that vision, and I am done with it. You will never hear me preach the prosperity gospel here. You will never hear me preach the poverty gospel either. We do not chase money. We do the assignment. And if the assignment is business, part of it is generating revenue and growing it with integrity, diligence, and excellence. The episode closes with a prayer over you, that you would not bury the talents and the skills God handed you.   Three Take Home Points 1. Both ends of the spectrum are a lie. The prosperity gospel says wealth proves your righteousness. The poverty gospel says lack proves it. Both produce the exact same fruit, which is pride, and both take your eyes off the only question that matters. Your application: Ask yourself honestly which of the two you have been quietly agreeing with. If you have ever felt a flicker of spiritual superiority over someone with money, or felt shame for wanting your business to be profitable, name it today and put it under the truth of God's Word instead. 2. Revenue is an integrity issue, not a money issue. If God called you into business, then creating solutions and selling them is not a distraction from your assignment. It is the assignment. Not generating revenue in a business you were called to build is not humility. It is disobedience wearing humility's clothes. Your application: Look at the offer you have been avoiding, the price you have been apologizing for, or the ask you have not made. Make it this week. Treat it as obedience, because that is exactly what it is. 3. Your assignment will not look like everyone else's, and the wrong voices will try to talk you out of it. Nobody in my discipleship school saw a podcast as a mission field. One email from a missionary had me questioning whether I should host business events at all. Millions of downloads and hundreds of salvations later, I know what that obedience was worth. Your application: Get clear on who actually has permission to speak into your calling. If a voice does not understand the assignment God gave you, that voice does not get a vote. “It was a completely unthinking exercise in cost-cutting that made no sense in terms of the newspaper. I think perhaps if you want to destroy the newspaper, it made sense.” — Simon Elegant on being ‘eliminated' by the Washington Post Hong Kong in 2019. A dismembered body is found in a landfill. A disgraced police superintendent is called back from internal exile to solve it. The city around him is burning. Rather than a John Woo movie, this is the setting for a Simon Elegant thriller. Born in Hong Kong, former Beijing bureau chief for Time magazine, most recently the Washington Post's man in China until Jeff Bezos “eliminated” him three months ago — Elegant has written the definitive Hong Kong novel. First and foremost, City on Fire: A Novel of Hong Kong is a crime thriller. Superintendent Killian Tong — half-Chinese, half-Irish, loved by no one in his department — investigates a murder while his sister is noisily demonstrating on the other side of the barricades. But the book doubles as a compressed history of Hong Kong: from Palmerston's “barren rock” in the 1840s — seized from China after the opium wars — through the ninety-nine-year lease, the handover in 1997, and the slow strangulation of the “one country, two systems” promise. Elegant is neither a hardline China hawk nor an apologist for Beijing. Yes, he credits the British with a relatively enlightened administration — from its public housing to the uncorrupt civil service that inspired the Singapore model. But he is also clear about what happened after 1997. Hong Kong people assumed Beijing would honour the Thatcher-Deng terms, and then discovered, to their horror, that they had no rights. It was a silent coup rather than a gaudy takeover of power. And so the 2019 protests — when a million people went onto the streets — are not just a backdrop to City on Fire but also the real-life stage on which Hong Kong burnt. Five Takeaways •       Enlightened Colonialism — With Caveats: Was Hong Kong an example of enlightened British colonialism? Elegant says: relatively, yes. The administration was light-handed. The public housing was so good that Singapore copied it. The civil service was — after 1972, when they had to create the ICAC following a police corruption scandal — genuinely clean. Milton Friedman praised the free-market model. But it was also racialized: the upper levels were almost entirely white Anglo, and the Chinese were largely excluded from administrative power. Governor Jock MacLehose changed this. Enlightened colonialism, Elegant concludes, is not a contradiction in terms — but it is relative. Compared to the Belgian Congo, Hong Kong was paradise. •       One Country, Two Systems: A Promise Broken: The terms negotiated by Thatcher and Deng in the 1980s guaranteed Hong Kong's autonomy until 2047. Hong Kong people assumed these terms were real and would be adhered to. They were not. The first attempt to pass a national security law came in 2004. There were mass protests in 2014. In 2019, a million people — in a city of six million — were on the streets. Beijing's choice was not between crushing them or not. It was between blood in the streets and a silent coup. They chose the silent coup. The national security law of 2020 was the final instrument. There is no longer any meaningful “one country, two systems.” •       The Policeman as Moral Complexity: Elegant's decision to make his protagonist a policeman — rather than a protester — is the novel's central artistic choice. Superintendent Killian Tong is not a villain. He is a man caught between institutions he has served his whole life and a conscience that knows what's happening is wrong. His younger sister is on the other side of the barricades. The murder investigation forces him to confront not just the crime but the system that made it possible. Elegant wanted to write about moral complexity, not propaganda — and the only way to do that was to give the story to the person most implicated in the system. •       Bezos ‘Eliminated' the Washington Post's Foreign Staff: Simon Elegant's final paycheck from the Washington Post used the word “eliminated.” He was one of 35-40 foreign correspondents let go in a single exercise — one of the biggest foreign staffs at any American newspaper. No one, he says, can explain what the thinking was, or if there was any. Every person he meets in Washington has cancelled their subscription. The Post still has excellent national security reporters, but in terms of foreign coverage it is, Elegant says, “doomed.” His conclusion: “perhaps if you want to destroy the newspaper, it made sense.” •       Hemingway's Iceberg, Applied: What did writing fiction teach Simon Elegant after a career in journalism? The iceberg principle, which Hemingway described: seven-eighths of a book — the knowledge, the research, the reported detail — should sit below the waterline. Only the tippy-top should be visible. The weight of the knowledge gives the visible surface its authority. The book started at 128,000 words — every reported detail jammed in. By the third or fourth round of cuts with the editor's blade, it was 75,000. The lesson: don't jam in your entire notebook. Fiction goes more directly into the heart. It bypasses the brain and seeks a different truth. About the Guest Simon Elegant is a journalist and novelist born in Hong Kong. What blew me away wasn't the numbers; it was the simplicity. One product. One funnel. Two launches a year. Relentless customer research. She's the clearest example I've seen of someone who found the main thing and refused to let anything pull her off it.
