Gus Clemens on Wine explores and explains the world of wine in simple, humorous, fun posts

This is the weekly newspaper column.Bright side of wine crisis 9-7-2022Winemakers have a mandatory character trait: resiliency. They certainly have needed that trait in recent years while facing flattening wine sales, dramatic weather worries, global warming, Covid, rising production costs, and supply chain woes.Resilient winemakers actually see a sliver lining to all of this travail.Global wine consumption increased only by a disappointing four percent last year. Same time, value increased by 16 percent to $36.15 billion. There were only slightly more sales, but those who bought, bought significantly up. A silver lining for winemakers.Flip side, supply chain disruptions and inflation pinched profits. Glass for bottles has increased by 20 percent the past two years. Shipping costs soared—up to 300 percent—plus long delays in ports and shipping points. Bad thing for winemakers.Silver lining: many winemakers transition to more efficient packaging. Lighter bottles. Screw caps. Bonus silver lining—supply chain and port disruptions are abating.Extreme weather—drought, frost, hail, scorching temperatures—reduced production worldwide by one percent. Premium regions like Champagne, Bordeaux, and Beaujolais saw harvests plunge by 30 percent. Really bad for some winemakers.Silver lining: in recent years, winemakers fretted about over-production. There is wine from previous harvests to take care of supply for this year and likely another. And production did not decline, it just didn't increase by much. Wine is worldwide. Plight in one region, plentitude in another. There is another movement that has been in motion for some years. Recent misery significantly encouraged the movement to organic, sustainable, biodynamic vine growing. The techniques which eliminate artificial chemicals, fertilizers, and pesticides produce quality grapes and better wines. And winegrowers found they deliver significant savings, too. Several vineyards used natural fertilizers and weed control to cut costs in half or more. Better grapes, lower costs. That is a winning formula in testing times for resilient winemakers.Tasting notes:• Joseph Carr Josh Cellars Rosé 2020: People who think they don't like wine will find this pleasantly appealing. $11-15. Link to my review• Goose Ridge Winery Revelation Rosé 2021: Refreshing, versatile. Clearly built as crowd-pleaser from elite Washington maker headed by women. $18-26. Link to my review• Chalk Hill Estate Chardonnay, Chalk Hill Appellation 2020: Juicy, fruit-driven, lush, plush opulent example of classic Cali big fruit, butter, oak chard. $35-40. Link to my review• Adobe Road Carbon 2018: Elegant, pleasantly enjoyable, rich, easy drinking red blend led by petite sirah. $85. Link to my reviewLast round: OK, I may not be totally sane. I'll give you that. But at least all of my personalities agree wine is amazing. This is a reader-supported publication. In the very first story of our second season we listen as powerful men make big plans and pretty speeches and it is left to an elegant lady to do the heavy lifting of creating our town ... practically from nothing! We travel back to January 1, 1855 to witness the arrival of the Lady Elgin and trace the myriad of ways that historic day and its visitor impacted every part of our town's history right up to today. After the story we dig a little deeper into a couple of the characters associated with the events detailed. One famous fellow (he has his very own Canada Heritage Minute devoted to his story) has very strong connections to our town and the other person has a very dubious connection to our host. We also give you an update of all the fun and exciting activities happening at the museum (boy are we busy!) so you won't miss out on the excitement and as always we invite your feedback. This week we're reairing episodes featuring some of our favorite audiobooks we've covered on Behind the Mic. Host Jo Reed and AudioFile contributor Alan Minskoff discuss this unusual and absorbing audiobook full of interwoven stories from Jennifer Egan. Each performance is exceptional. Michael Boatman narrates the opening chapter, capturing the interior life of the enigmatic Bix Boughton, who invents a world-altering technology central to the plot. The time-traveling chapters reprise some of the characters from Egan's award-winning A VISIT FROM THE GOON SQUAD, but this novel has a wider timeframe, a greater trajectory, and a more complex plot. Read the full review of the audiobook on AudioFile's website. Published by Simon & Schuster Audio. Find more audiobook recommendations at audiofilemagazine.com Support for AudioFile's Behind the Mic comes from Naxos AudioBooks. Read by Andrew Wincott, Flaubert's Three Tales is a collection of three compelling short stories about faith, loneliness and love.

While the subtitle may refer to “corporate politics”, my readers are telling me it applies to much, much more. As a refresher, here are the five principles along with the past podcasts we have done. 1: Discern Signal from Noise2: Focus on what You Want3: Take Nothing Personally4: Master Your Stories5: Develop A Sense of InquiryJen and I have been working together for several years, and given that we are mother/daughter, we get lots of opportunities to encounter some personal politics. The Elegant Pivot, which is about how to assume positive intent, is a really powerful tool to use -- if you can get out of your own way. We've had so much fun having these conversations, because we've been applying the principles in the book with each other. We even encountered some live-and-real-time mother/daughter moments about how we have gotten in our own way, and how we navigated some of our difficult conversations. In this wrap up, we dive deep into the trickiest character in the book, Fighting Francis. That's the situation where someone truly has it out for you. When I ask people about assuming positive intent, and where it works for them, they say, “I'm okay to assume positive intent if I don't think they're out to get me, but if I think the other person has negative intent or is out to get me, I just can't do it. I am going to assume the worst.” I get it and I've been there. I still have found that assuming positive intent works wonders and in this conversation, we talk through some practical situations that ended well – and give some strategies for how to use the five principles to navigate the dreaded Fighting Francis.Guest Contact Info:Website: ManeelyConsulting.com Email: Jennifer@maneelyconsulting.com

The little-known and under-studied 1807 Insurrection Act was passed to give the president the ability to deploy federal military forces to fend off lawlessness and rebellion, but it soon became much more than the sum of its parts. Its power is integrally linked to the perceived threat of black American equity in what lawyer and critic Hawa Allan demonstrates is a dangerous paradox. While the Act was initially used to repress rebellion against slavery, during Reconstruction it was invoked by President Grant to quell white-supremacist uprisings in the South. During the civil rights movement, it enabled the protection of black students who attended previously segregated educational institutions. Most recently, the Insurrection Act has been the vehicle for presidents to call upon federal troops to suppress so-called “race riots” like those in Los Angeles in 1992, and for them to threaten to do so in other cases of racial justice activism. Yet when the US Capitol was stormed in January 2021, the impulse to restore law and order and counter insurrectionary threats to the republic lay dormant. Allan's distinctly literary voice underscores her paradigm-shifting reflections on the presence of fear and silence in history and their shadowy impact on the law. Throughout, she draws revealing insight from her own experiences as one of the only black girls in her leafy Long Island suburb, as a black lawyer at a predominantly white firm during a visit from presidential candidate Barack Obama, and as a thinker about the use and misuse of appeals to law and order. Elegant and profound, deeply researched and intensely felt, Insurrection: Rebellion, Civil Rights, and the Paradoxical State of Black Citizenship (Norton, 2022) is necessary reading in our reckoning with structural racism, government power, and protest in the United States. Episode 163. Venus spends about a month in a sign. Venus transits indicate how we're loving, creating, or spending. Let's go through each sign: Aries - When Venus is in Aries, romance gets red-hot. This is a bold, fast-paced transit, which loves the chase more than the commitment. If you're single, it's a great time to be on the prowl! Venus in Aries isn't shy - you can find your swagger now. Original artistic ideas are easier to come by and you might spend your dough faster than it comes in. Watch out for impulse spending under this transit. Taurus - When Venus is in Taurus, romance gets sensuous, affectionate, and tactile. Quality time and plenty of physical touch are IN. However, you can be overindulgent or possessive too. You'll want to keep those tendencies in check. This is an intensely creative period, and artists will find inspiration everywhere. Under this transit, you'll want to invest in quality pieces and plenty of pampering. Gemini - When Venus is in Gemini, you can get your flirt on! Words enchant, and it's best to approach romance through the mind. Your social life could be more active at this time - or you could be dating numerous people. However, this is restless transit so you might find someone fascinating one day, only to get bored with them the next. This transit is excellent for writers. It's also your time to spend money on books, stationery, classes, and anything that feeds your curiosity. Cancer - When Venus is in Cancer, romance becomes old-fashioned. Flowers, home-cooked meals by candlelight, and long walks under the moon keep it burning bright. Emotions tend to be tender, so you'll want to be extra sensitive with your loved ones. During this transit, you'll want to invest in property or things for the home. Leo - When Venus is in Leo, expect plenty of romantic fireworks! Grand gestures, extravagant gifts, and bold declarations of love (preferably in front of an audience) are the way to go. Give your partner plenty of attention and you'll get it returned ten-fold. Also: flattery will get you far! This is an affectionate transit, so the bedroom will be super-hot. Venus in Leo is your best time for splurging on all the self-indulgent things. Elegant dinners, new threads, skimpy lingerie, and all the entertainment - yes, please! Virgo - When Venus is in Virgo, acts of service is the love language. The little things matter now - taking care of details, catering to your partner's needs, or being practical will keep love humming along. This isn't considered the most romantic transit, but I have found it can be an opportunity to be thoughtful. What's more loving than paying attention to what your partner needs? This transit is best for spending on pragmatic things such as organizational products, tools, and cleaning supplies. It's also a fantastic time to edit your creative work. Libra - When Venus is in Libra, you can expect romance to rise a few octaves. Venus is happy here and lends an elegant, refined air to matters of the heart. This is an excellent transit to wine and dine. It's also sublime for artists - the muses are singing! Indulge in fine artwork, beautiful clothes, cosmetics, and jewelry. Scorpio - When Venus is in Scorpio, love gets passionate, sexy, and all-consuming. The urge to merge is at an all-time high - a surface relationship won't do. You want to go deep! The shadow side is obsession and possessiveness, two vibes you'll want to guard against if you want to avoid drama. Money attraction seems easier at this time and it's an ideal period for investing in the future - although some folks think it's best for spending on occult supplies and edgy, adult-oriented entertainment. Sagittarius - When Venus is in Sagittarius, fun, and freedom are the name of the game. This is an easy-breezy vibe, which makes it a bit restless. You might feel like you want to roam - and the grass may seem much greener on the other side. A few romantic adventures (more like rom-com capers) are possible under this transit. This is an excellent time to spend your moolah on travel, education, and spiritual growth. Capricorn - When Venus is in Capricorn, quality is important. Not just in love, but also in expenditures. This transit values commitment - so you may be interested in a serious relationship or purchasing things that are built to last. It's also a reserved transit, which means you're less likely to take an impulsive approach to relationships or your finances. Aquarius - When Venus is in Aquarius, you're more likely to want breathing room in your relationships. Instead of closeness, your mantra might be “why can't we be friends?” Friends can become lovers and lovers can become friends. The unconventional is intriguing while conformity is dreadful. Free love, experimenting, and a little rebellion keep things interesting. You might be interested in spending your money on technology, humanitarian causes, and parties with your buddies. Pisces - When Venus is in Pisces, love is next-level. After all, Venus is exalted in the sign of the Fish, which means it's the best expression for the Goddess of Love. Romance is gentle and affectionate -  love is unconditional. Poetry, music, and long make-out sessions allow relationships to bond. You'll have to watch out for boundaries though. It's too easy to say yes when you really mean no. This transit is great for spending on art, music, and giving back to the community. But you'll want to be careful of retail therapy. If you're feeling down, put the credit card away.

This episode is a bit different, and I'm sharing something really exclusive with you. About 12 or 13 years ago I created a training called The Elegant Femme Intention, which showed how to set elegant intentionn. I'm sharing the full hour-long training with you today! Intention setting is something that I've done for quite awhile now consistently in my life, and there is something very specific about setting an elegant intention, which I'll talk about today.  This training is longer than our usual episodes and you may notice the audio quality is a bit different than what you normally hear on this podcast, being recorded such a long time ago. However, the information is still very relevant and powerful, so please let me know how it supports you, and what it is that you receive from it!  If you have a question that you would like answered on an upcoming episode, you can go to https://elegantfemme.com/podcast and click on “Have Une Question” on the right hand side of the page.   If this episode inspires you in some way, take a screenshot of you listening on your device and post it to your Instagram Stories, and tag @elegantfemme1.
