The district is known for its many theatres, like the incredible Palais Garnier, home to Paris's historic opera house. The ninth stretches from the opera house to the foot of Montmartre in the north and it's a shopper's paradise in between. You'll find two incredible department stores and the world's oldest auction house – selling everything from dinosaur bones to Picassos! The ninth is nothing if not varied, and it's the latest stop on our discovery of Paris's neighbourhoods.

Stāsta velosipēdu vēstures pētnieks, Saulkrastu Velosipēdu muzeja līdzizveidotājs Eduards Seregins Velosipēds tika izgatavots 1943. gada vasarā Rīgā, Valsts Elektrotehniskās fabrikas (VEF) sporta lidmašīnu darbnīcā. Elegantā velosipēda konstrukcijas autors un izgatavošanas procesa vadītājs bija neviens cits kā slavenais latviešu aviokonstruktors, viens no rūpnieciskā dizaina aizsācējiem Latvijā – Kārlis Irbītis (1904. gada 14. oktobris, Lādes pagasts – 1997. gada 13. oktobris, Kanāda), kurš laikā no 1935. līdz 1943. gadam vadīja Valsts Elektrotehniskajā fabrikas Sporta lidmašīnu būves nodaļu. Kā atceras Kārļa Irbīša līdzgaitnieki, viņa konstruktora talantam un izgudrotāja domu lidojumam nebija robežu. Slavenā vīra vadībā, kurš pamatoti tiek dēvēts par Latvijas aviobūves spožāko dārgakmeni, ir radīti ne tikai lidaparāti. Savulaik Kārlis Irbītis ir konstruējis un izgatavojis vairāku unikālu modeļu automobiļus, īpašu motociklu un arī šo velosipēdu, kurš tika izgatavots vienā eksemplārā. Velosipēds ir ievērojams ne vien ar savu lielisko "Art Deco" stila dizainu: abi velosipēda riteņi ir aprīkoti ar atsperēm, taču pakaļējā riteņa komfortam radīts speciāls hidraulisks monoamortizators, kādi velosipēdu ražošanā oficiāli parādījās vien 80. gados, ienākot modē kalnu divriteņiem! Šādu piekares veidu Irbītis saskatīja par perspektīvu jau tālajā 1943. gadā. Savās atmiņās velosipēda pasūtītājs un faktiskais īpašnieks Aleksandrs Egle 1989. gadā rakstīja: "Kad velosipēds tika izgatavots, to izmēģinājām VEF pagalmā daudzu skatītāju klātbūtnē. Uz ceļa ik pa dažiem metriem nolikām pusapaļas malkas šķilas. Ieskrējos un lielā ātrumā braucu tām pāri - noklakšķēja atsperotie riteņi un visiem bija liels brīnums par šo skaisto, jauno velosipēdu." Ziņa par konstruktora Kārļa Irbīša meistardarbu tika publicēta arī laikraksta "Tēvija" 1943. gada 24. jūlija numurā. Avīze diezgan detalizēti aprakstīja velosipēda konstrukciju un pieminēja, ka būvei lietots saplākšņu fabrikā "Potempo" sagatavots augstvērtīgs bakelizēts koks un G. Ērenpreisa firmas divriteņu metāla daļas. Interesanti, ka līdz mūsdienām ir saglabājies arī Kārļa Irbīša pašrocīgi izgatavotais šī velosipēda zīmējums, kurš šobrīd glabājas VEF vēstures muzejā Rīgā. Skaistā koka divriteņa rāmi rotā paša konstruktora firmas zīme – lidojoša kaija; tāda pati kā tās, kuras greznoja arī Kārļa Irbīša būvēto lidmašīnu sānus. Velosipēds līdz mūsdienām ir saglabājies absolūti nevainojamā stāvoklī un apskatāms Saulkrastu Velosipēdu muzeja kolekcijā. Šī velosipēda radīšana visciešākā veidā ir saistāma ne vien ar velorūpniecības vēsturi Latvijā, bet arī ar Latvijas aviāciju un lidmašīnu būvi mūsu zemē.

Well, you'd be hard-pressed to find a more picturesque spot to paint than our location today. We are at PleinAir Vineyards, one of Amador County's newest wineries. This is a small, intimate winery started by husband and wife team Tom and Sarah Malone, with an eye for design and a taste for good wine. We're excited to have Tom and his consulting winemaker Steve Leveque (whose pedigree includes Mondavi, Opus One, and Hall Wines) here to paint the picture of PleinAir for us.Tom and Sarah were in the home remodeling business, renovating houses with a French country flair. The heart of transition is navigating liminal space. This in-between place offers an entry point into reality, a portal into deeper relationship with oneself and the Divine. We are continually in the process of transition. Each transition is an invitation to awaken to possibility, to consciously go with life rather than resist it. In the Vedic tradition, tirtha is a Sanskrit term for a crossing-over point from ordinary to sacred space. Hospitals, churches, and airports are transitional places. Everything in the universe is food; we just have to figure out how to use it. Savasana, the corpse pose in yoga, can be used to practice dying. We will encounter trials and crises on the path, an inner overturning such that things will never again be what they were. To transform, we must understand that our present form and the way we conceive of ourselves and the world has to disappear for another reality to appear. Winning without losing anything is a vain and illusory hope of ego. There's suffering and struggle but also joy and love in letting go. What if we turned toward transition rather than away from it? We have a capacity to totally agree with the moment. We have to remember to breathe during transitions. If we can relax, we'll have no problem. We can learn to befriend the cage we are in. A gap is a place where the shoreline we have left behind is no longer visible and the shore we are heading for is shrouded in uncertainty. The Way is for heroes. Part of us is afraid, but another part is courageous. There is joy in comradeship and companionship on the path. When we are in transition, it is useful to consider the inevitability of it.
