Send us a textFew desserts capture the essence of French pâtisserie quite like the tarte au citron. Elegant, tangy, and perfectly balanced, this classic pairs crisp, buttery pâte sucrée with a silky lemon cream that dances between sweet and tart. And then there's its show-stopping cousin — the tarte au citron meringuée — with peaks of golden, fluffy meringue adding drama and sweetness to every bite. In this episode of Fabulously Delicious, we dive deep into the world of these beloved tarts, exploring what makes them so irresistible and why they've stood the test of time in French cuisine. We'll journey through the history of the lemon tart, from its early beginnings in English kitchens and Italian palaces to the refinements of French pastry chefs in the 18th and 19th centuries. Along the way, we uncover how lemons made their way to France, the role of Mediterranean citrus-growing regions like Menton, and how this sunny fruit became a staple in French gastronomy. We'll also look at the origins of meringue and how it became the perfect match for lemon's sharp brightness.Of course, this episode isn't just about history — it's about flavour. We'll break down the essential ingredients that make the perfect tart, from the butter-rich pastry to the smooth lemon curd and the choice between Italian and French meringue. And we'll explore how different versions of the lemon tart have evolved around the world, each with their own unique twists, from British simplicity to Italian citrus elegance.Whether you're a lifelong lover of tarte au citron, a fan of lemon meringue pie, or simply curious about the stories behind France's sweetest creations, this episode will leave you craving something delicious and a little bit zesty. So, pour yourself a cup of coffee — or perhaps a glass of Champagne — and join me, Andrew Prior, as we celebrate one of France's most fabulously delicious desserts.Looking to deepen your culinary journey beyond the podcast? Machine learning systems are making life-altering decisions for us: approving mortgage loans, determining whether a tumor is cancerous, or deciding if someone gets bail. They now influence developments and discoveries in chemistry, biology, and physics—the study of genomes, extrasolar planets, even the intricacies of quantum systems. And all this before large language models such as ChatGPT came on the scene. We are living through a revolution in machine learning-powered AI that shows no signs of slowing down. This technology is based on relatively simple mathematical ideas, some of which go back centuries, including linear algebra and calculus, the stuff of seventeenth- and eighteenth-century mathematics. It took the birth and advancement of computer science and the kindling of 1990s computer chips designed for video games to ignite the explosion of AI that we see today. In this enlightening book, Anil Ananthaswamy explains the fundamental math behind machine learning, while suggesting intriguing links between artificial and natural intelligence. This is such a special episode because, for the first time ever, I'm interviewing an author about their book, because it's one of my favorite books! Gingko Season by Naomi Xu Elegant is a story about a young woman, Penelope Lin, who is moving through the world after her first big heartbreak and discovering herself while on the cusp between young adulthood and adulthood. The depiction of this time of life is just one of the things I loved about this book, and I was thrilled to be able to discuss it with Naomi!Naomi Xu Elegant is a freelance journalist and the author of the novel Gingko Season. She lives in New York. Naomi's writing has appeared in Monocle, Fortune, Atlas Obscura, Nikkei Asia, The Drift, and elsewhere. She is co-editor of Gully, an independent literary magazine, and she writes a monthly Substack called Luanqibazao.I would love for you to read Gingko Season, check out this review from the New York Times! Our drink this week is a Lychee Martini, which is featured in the book. As I found out during our discussion, including these martinis was an Easter egg for Naomi's mom, because they're her favorite cocktail. I asked if she'd be willing to share the recipe with us as a special addition to the episode, and she did! She said the secret is to blend whole lychees and lychee juice together, then strain the mixture through a sieve to get that lovely, milky color.Lychee Martini Recipe2 oz. vodka2 oz. lychee juiceShake in a cocktail shaker over ice.Serve neat in a cocktail glass.Garnish with a whole lychee (optional)Naomi's mom's tip: Blend whole lychees with lychee juice (both canned), then strain through a sieve to get your juice. The blended fruit gives it that lovely, clouded look. You can also add a bit of citrus or a dash of dry vermouth—lychee martinis are meant for everyone! In This EpisodeGarden State FilmFriday I'm In Love - Phoebe Bridgers CoverNapoleon FilmFoot Binding HistoryMiddlemarch by George EliotIn Search of Lost Time by Marcel ProustKazou IshiguroSally RooneyElena FerranteA Feather on the Breath of God by Sigrid NunezThe Sympathizer by Viet Thanh NguyenThe Candy House by Jennifer EganNaomi's Substack
This episode, we finally return to taping into a full director's filmography (mostly). Guy Ritchie has been crazy busy lately, movies and shows coming out all the time. While some see his career as being very up and down, we review and speculate why the misteps make sense, and why some of his flops deserve more credit than they get. We discuss his original short film: The Hard Case, in addition to Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels, Snatch, Swept Away, Revolvr, RocknRolla, Sherlock Holmes & Sherlock Holmes: Game of Shadows, The Man from U.N.C.L.E., King Arthur: Legend of the Sword, Aladdin, The Gentlemen, Wrath of Man, Operation Fortune: Ruse de Guerre, The Covenant, and Dustin's favorite movie of 2024 - Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare (we only both didn't have time for Fountain of Youth and MobLand). It's also amazing how many times his work should have launched massive franchises, but didn't. We still hold out hope for revivals in the future! Before that, Dustin gives spoiler-free first impressions of Superman, Sinners, Jurassic World: Rebirth, Minecraft, Risen, and Monster Summer. Jake has watched most of Squid Game season 3 and The Better Sister.Have thoughts about the episode? David Hejl from Domaine Della is our guest on California Wine Country with Steve Jaxon and Dan Berger. Blair Hardman is also in the studio today. The Domaine Della winery is named after David's mother, Della. David used to be the CEO and general manager for Kosta Browne. He worked for Kosta Browne winery after they were sold to new owners. He was entrusted with managing the staff through a transition to go from 10,000 cases per year to 30,000. Before that, David started in the 1980s living in Paris, France, working for Nabisco. He had great French wine at dinner every night. That was the exposure to wine that started his lifelong interest. California Wine Country is brought to you by Rodney Strong Vineyards and Davis Bynum Wines. They are tasting a Chardonnay that Dan Berger calls, “Chardonnay to make you wake up,” and, “incredible.” David gives credit to the vineyard, one of Sonoma County's finest. It's all about picking to get the perfect acidity. He also prefers not to use too much oak. That is how he gets the fruit to take the lead. Dan calls this wine perfectly balanced. It has the rich fruit that you want, but the acidity to make it pair well with food. It is a remarkable balance between big and delicate. And of course, it should get better in about three years. David says, "We'll be in harvest before you know it!" Then they open a Pinot Noir. He uses fruit from some of the same vineyards that supplied Kosta Browne. The owners and growers are longtime friends. They are 85% direct to consumer. The rest sells through charity events around the country. Dan says the Pinot Noir is excellent, and has all the best characteristics of Russian River Pinot Noir. Elegant, raspberry aromas, a little bit of cherry, and a spice component. David explains that there are 6 different clones, in two different vineyards.
Naomi Xu Elegant's debut novel, Gingko Season (W. W. Norton: 2025), stars Penelope Lin, a young Chinese woman living in New York in the faraway year of 2018. With difficult parents and a bad break-up, she works for a museum's exhibition on bound feet, with a gaggle of other, somewhat clueless friends. But a meeting with Hoang, a researcher at a cancer lab, forces Penelope to rethink what she wants with her life. Naomi joins me today to talk about her book, her choice of characters, how she wanted to approach tropes like the meet-cute—and why 2018 now feels like ancient history, even to young-ish millennials. What does it mean to be free? Sometimes it means two wheels and an open road. This episode is a love song to and a celebration of the bicycle--from a dead-end American suburb, to a trail in Quebec, to a train station in Amsterdam. This is a story about how a few spinning gears can change the world.
Self care while traveling isn't just about bubble baths and beauty products. This is about reclaiming your presence even while in motion. Whether you're jetting off to Europe or exploring close to home, travel can either deplete you or restore you. In this episode, I'm sharing how to choose the latter by infusing intention and softness into your entire travel journey from packing and airport lines to morning rituals in your hotel and quiet moments by the sea. What we dive into: Why your nervous system travels with you and how to soothe it along the way How to build in-flight rituals that feel luxurious, not laborious Elegant ways to anchor yourself in a new destination (including scent, lighting, and pacing) Daily self-care habits that don't feel forced Useful Resources:

This SPECIAL EPISODE introduces my new single “THE CUT OF THE KNIFE”. It's the last of the four new singles that I've released monthly beginning in March. The first was “Rough Rider”, the second was “Moon Shot”, and the third was “Day At The Races”.I wrote “The Cut Of The Knife as a kind of homage to Dave Brubeck, the revered American jazz pianist. His saxophonist, Paul Desmond, wrote a song called “Take Five”, and the Brubeck band recorded it in 1959 on their album “Time Out”. That tune has become the biggest selling jazz song of all time. It even became a big crossover hit on the radio. One of the things that made “Take Five” so cool was that it was written in an odd time signature, 5/4 time. So the song's title was a play on words about its time signature and it was also an inside musician's phrase telling the band to relax for five minutes before the next set.“The Cut Of The Knife” features an incredible Guest Artist on guitar solo - Kerry Marx, the Musical Director of the Grand Ole Opry band who has been a guest on this podcast. His credits include touring with Johnny Mathis, Olivia Newton-John and Don McLean, recordings with Bob Dylan and Johnny Cash, movie albums like “Finding Nemo”, and music awards shows like Billboard, CMA and the American Music Awards. And a shout out goes to two of my longtime Project Grand Slam band mates - Baden Goyo on keys and Joel E. Mateo on drums. Both play terrific solos on the new single. And Joel's drum solo is particularly meaningful because Joe Morello, Brubeck's drummer, played a memorable drum solo on “Take Five”.“The Cut Of The Knife” has been called “Elegant”, “Beautiful” and “A Wonder”!CLICK HERE FOR ALL LINKSCLICK HERE FOR THE OFFICIAL VIDEO ---------------------------------------------The Follow Your Dream Podcast:Top 1% of all podcasts with Listeners in 200 countries!Click here for All Episodes Click here for Guest List Click here for Guest Groupings Click here for Guest TestimonialsClick here to Subscribe Click here to receive our Email UpdatesClick here to Rate and Review the podcast—----------------------------------------ROBERT'S RECENT SINGLES:“DAY AT THE RACES” is Robert's single that captures the thrills, chills and pageantry of horse racing's Triple Crown. A couple silver foxes from the Mink Mile took Jesse Brown for a ride. They said their names were Walter and Beverly. The Mink Mile, for those of you who aren't from Toronto or don't regularly drop three figures for socks, is a strip of upscale boutiques in the city's downtown. Anyway, the characters claiming to be Walter and Beverly offered to sell Mr. Brown an elegant cardigan. You may have heard the saying “everything in life is a negotiation.” It highlights the prevalence of negotiations across many facets of our everyday lives—sometimes with lower stakes like agreeing to an allowance with your children and in other cases much more impactful decisions that pertain to your career or that might affect long-term financial goals. If we can negotiate more effectively, it could make a big difference. But, how? On this episode of The Behavioral Divide, host Hal Hershfield discusses this question with Yale University's Daylian Cain, Ph.D., a Senior Lecturer in Negotiations, Leadership, and Ethics, and Scott Colangelo, Chairman and Managing Partner at Prime Capital. Our goal is to understand the types of negotiations we may face during our financial journey and identify well-researched and practically applied tips for potentially better outcomes. If you enjoy the show, please let us know by giving our series a five-star rating. We'd also love to hear from you. Go get Identity Based Manifesting here:https://freeneville.podia.com/the-state-stacking-formulaIdentity-Based Manifesting vs. Good IntentionsHe said…He had a good intention….You know where this is going already, don't you.Good intentions sound nice. They feel polite. They keep you stuck.“I intend to eat better.”“I intend to build my business and make some money.”“I intend to finally - well someday - and struggle towards…….”Have you noticed…It's all fluff.Intentions are mental.Intentions live in the land of maybe. They come with a built-in escape hatch:“Well, I meant to…”“But I haven't - again.”But living from - the LEVEL OF IDENTITY…That's a whole different animal. We're talking about ESSENCE ACTIVATION here…Identity doesn't say “I intend to…”IDENTITY reveals in every breath you take…“This is who I am.”Not someday. Not when I get my shit together. Now!Here's the difference in the wild:The guy with a good intention says,“I intend to go to the gym….”The guy living from identity,“Finds himself fit, and enjoyably doing, what fit people enjoy.”On the other hand…The intender is THE GREAT Pretender - hoping and praying. While still feeling foooked inside…Meanwhile…IDENTITY - those who live from IDENTITY ACTIVATED - they find freedom.Listen to them…Because “Intenders” say, “What should I do?” - Because they live in the land of confusion and delusion. On the other hand…Identity Based Manifestors share, “Here's how I live. Join me!”Intenders rely on reminders, goals, mood, and motivation. But when Identity is Activated - you just move. Smooth. Effortless. Elegant. Strong.Neville nailed it.“Assume the feeling of the wish fulfilled.”He didn't say “set a goal.”He didn't say “intend hard enough.”He revealed the POWER of being it.So stop “intending”.Stop trying again and again to be a better version of the old you…That's like putting a new bumper sticker on an old shit buggy. And expecting “real transformation”.Activate Identity. So you can start REALLY being the real you…You will start seeing from THE REAL EYES of that person! And that person only. The one who already is what they've been trying - indending - to become. That's where the magic is.Not in good intentions. In God in you…As you.In Identity-Based-Manifesting!

Unshakeable: Redefining Success on Your Own Terms In the pursuit of success, many individuals find themselves chasing external markers—such as wealth, recognition, or status—believing that these achievements will bring them happiness and fulfillment. However, as discussed in the podcast episode, true success, or "elegant success," is fundamentally about creating a life that aligns with your personal values and brings genuine satisfaction. Host Tonya Leigh explores the concept of elegant success—success that is rooted in personal values, alignment, and ease, rather than societal pressures to do more and be more. Tonya shares her reflections on the importance of creating a fulfilling life that feels good on the inside, as well as the challenges many are facing in today's uncertain world. Drawing from her personal experiences, including navigating her own emotional landscape during difficult times, she emphasizes the significance of managing one's nervous system and internal world to cultivate resilience and peace. Tune in for insights that challenge traditional definitions of success and encourage listeners to redefine what it means to thrive.
