Bainbridge Youth Talent Showcase Are you a creative expression teacher or student? You now have a community platform where you can submit a video and share your talents with a virtual audience! Live performances have been put on hold this past year during the pandemic, but a local voice teacher sparked the idea of a virtual outlet for students to perform what they’ve been working on. Arts & Humanities Bainbridge is sponsoring a new youth program called Bainbridge Talent Showcase It is described as a “virtual stage for the community’s creative youth and to highlight the work of their teachers” In this episode of What’s Up Bainbridge AHB Board members Linda Kramer Jenning and Stephanie Reese share with us what inspired the program and the vision for showcasing local youth talent on the cultural platform Currents. Stephanie tells us about the value for the young performer on reaching an audience, as well as her experience in showcasing her students and what that means to her as a teacher. Climate Action Bainbridge is sponsoring a community virtual forum Carbon Footprint of Food Waste Tuesday April 27th 5:00 pm to 6:30 pm “The goal of the Forum is to expand people’s understanding of issues related to climate change and energy.” In this episode of What’s Up Bainbridge, Deb Rudnick, of Bainbridge Watershed Council, and Diane Landry, of Zero Waste, explain that food waste is an area of climate change where everyone can make an impact in their daily lives. Meet Steve Leveen in this episode of What’s Up Bainbridge. A fierce champion of bilingualism in America, he is the author of the recently published America’s Bilingual Century, his third book which serves as a call to action to Americans to advance to a country where a majority knows English and another language. Judy Lindsley of the Seattle Children’s Hospital Bainbridge Island Bargain Boutique joins us in this edition of What’s Up Bainbridge to discuss the importance of this Island institution. Judy provides an historical overview of the organization, the mission and the important services it provides to many children in the region by raising funds and community awareness. In 1991 the retail stores were all brought together to form the Retail Division. Today there are 5 Thrift Stores, now called Bargain Boutiques: Redmond, Kent, Olympia, Bainbridge Island, and Tricities. The Bainbridge Island Bargain Boutique opened in 1968 by the Lenore Ostrander Guild, and opened with both donated and consigned goods. This guild went Emeritus after 30 years in 1997. In September of 2010 the store moved to Winslow Way West and moved to its current location at 1050 Hildebrand Ln in July of 2020. The Bainbridge Island City Council approved the Climate Action Plan (CAP) this past November 2020. What is the CAP and how will it be implemented? The Climate Change Advisory Committee (CCAC) will be hosting an online community event this month giving presentations of the plan, answer questions on the CAP and discuss next steps. Tahmina Watson, a Seattle immigration attorney and well-known media figure in the immigration field joins us on this edition of What’s Up Bainbridge.
