SEC Announces It Will Not Respond to Most No-Action Requests for Rule 14a-8 Shareholder Proposals.Government shutdown - the staff claimed they COULDN'T respond because after the shutdown, they had too much other work to do: “current resource and timing considerations following the lengthy government shutdown and the large volume of registration statements and other filings requiring prompt staff attention.” It just happens to coincide with Atkins saying there shouldn't be shareholder proposals, that's just a coincidence.John Cheveddan and Jim McRitchie - let's be honest, if it weren't for Cheveddan and McRitchie over 3 decades, we'd have less shareholder rights, and companies would not be such big whiners about “woke” shareholder proposals. Guys, you ruined it for all of us with your attention to democracy.Woke ESG shareholders like As You Sow, Arjuna, Trillium, and nuns - if we're honest, the nuns and SRI crowd might have been the straw, right? I mean they're putting in proposals that MAKE Exxon sue them! How dare they ask for carbon scope 3 emissions data!Antiwoke shareholders like NCPPR and Jesus - excluding Cheveddan/McRitchie, the highest volume of shareholder proposals have actually been the ANTI-woke filers, asking for things like a report on how companies will stop funding trans conversions (or one actual one where they asked about the reputational risk of NOT supporting un-trans-ing). Some of the proposals are so comically stupid, but the companies have to respond using third party lawyers and do the whole thing - maybe National Legal whatever center for whatever is the REAL straw?ISS and Glass Lewis - this was like 90% of what they did, since they certainly didn't suggest voting against any directors unless an activist was involved. So when Ramaswamy and Musk and DeSantis and Texas declared proxy advisors woke activists, it was hard to deny since they didn't do any work to vote out directors - just offer customers whatever voting pablum they wantedBlackRock and investors who never voted anywayOther - Atkins and Manhattan institute - lobbyists, administrationPepsi to cut product offering nearly 20% in deal with $4 billion activist ElliottPepsiCo said it also plans to accelerate the introduction of new offerings with simpler and more functional ingredients, including Doritos Protein and Simply NKD Cheetos and Doritos, which contain no artificial flavors or colors. The company also recently introduced a prebiotic version of its signature cola..WHO DO YOU BLAME?Pepsi CEO Ramon Laguarta - CEO since 2018, 21% influence, 43% connected to the board (so they're basically all known entities), has overseen basically zero shareholder value increase in the last 5 years, overall .513 TSR batting average - what has he been doing? Did he put a sign on the door begging an activist to come hang?Activist Elliott Management - Paul Singer is notorious as a real foodie… wait, no, sorry, he's known as a “vulture capitalist” who helped oust Jack Dorsey from Twitter because he didn't want him to hang in Africa, but was happy to have Elon Musk (who has five jobs) take it over. In 2021, he did take a 3% stake in Ahold Delhaize, a grocery store owner, so he's probably had a protein shake sprinkled on Doritos before?Pepsi's board - first of all, it's 14 people, which is like 7 people too many. Second - 4 finance types? Two pharma/med types? There are more people who know medicine than food - only ONE agribusiness repped on the board (Bunge) with the only other food production from Pepsi or ex-Pepsi execs? There are three directors on the nom committee with 10+ years on the board, and the other two have.. 9 years. Vasella has been there 23 years - time for some turnover.Roberto P. Martínez (International Chief Commercial Officer and CEO of New Revenue Streams) and Tara Glasgow (Executive Vice President and Chief Science Officer) - someone needs to be held responsible for Doritos Protein and Simply NKD CheetosJimmy Kimmel signs ABC extension through 2027Most of Kimmel's recent renewals have been multiyear extensions. There was no immediate word on whose choice it was to extend his current contract by one year.WHO DO YOU BLAME?Bob Iger - he yanked Kimmel to kiss Brendan Carr's ass and the affiliates, then put him back on when subscribers cancelled, then convinced affiliates to re-air, all because Kimmel said conservatives really didn't want Kirk's killer to be conservative? Now Kimmel is EXTENDED? It has to be the dumbest series of events since “Don't Say Gay” bill in Chapek's era, right?Disney's board - these are well known directors in the bag for Iger, and Iger would not even be CEO again if not for them. Susan Arnold, who at the time had more influence on the board than Iger, was chair of the nominating committee, had Mel Lagomasino and Derica Rice on with her, all went with Iger's hand picked choice of Bob Chapek. Arnold left the board, but both Rice and Lagomasino stayed behind to help choose… Bob Iger to return? Then brought on James Gorman, who hand picked HIS successor, to lead succession with Bob Iger again? Is anyone doing a job on this board? ISS - when Nelson Peltz took his Ike Perlmutter borrowed stake in Disney in 2024, ISS sided with Peltz and suggested voting out Mel Lagamasino because she was the longest tenured director and “responsible” for Disney's failed succession. In 2025, after Peltz lost and no one cared, ISS backed Lagamasino. With analysis like that, it's no wonder Disney can bow to the Trump Administration since there's no way ISS will actually suggest changing the board unless an old racist takes a stake.Brendan Carr - is this just a finger in the eye of Carr, the FCC, and the angry conservative affiliates by Iger? Is this Disney's way of being woke now?Other - Baby Doll Dixon, Jimmy Kimmel's agent - should have gotten him a 10 year deal with a player option out. Optically way better, gets bought out if they fire him.Trump says Netflix, WBD deal could be 'problem' as son-in-law Kushner backs Paramount bid“I'll be involved in that decision too,” Trump said days after Netflix agreed to buy WBD's film studiosParamount revealed in a regulatory filing that its hostile bid for WBD bid is being backed by Trump's son-in-law, Jared Kushner, who is a former White House advisor - and every Middle Eastern sovereign fund, as well as over $40bn by Larry Ellison (and David Ellison committed to spend more in a text to co-CEO Ted SarandosWHO DO YOU BLAME?Larry Ellison - without daddy's $40bn (and more - what's $40bn when you have $269bn in net worth and own an island in Hawaii), there is no deal - literally no deal, this is pure nepo - THE OLIGARCHYMiddle Eastern sovereign funds - I mean, they're involved in EVERY major deal of a conservative figure (Musk/Twitter, Musk/Grok, Ellison/Paramount, Ellison/TikTok, Trump/Air Force One) and are backing another consolidation. Is this the greatest capitalist manipulation ever? Dictator capitalism?Robby Starbuck - he claimed “victory” in the Skydance acquisition terms for killing DEI at Paramount, used the opportunity to lick the boot of Brendan Carr, who is almost guaranteed to investigate Netflix given their wokeness. Somehow it's all Robby Starbuck's fault, right?WBD chair Sam Di Piazza - a near lifer at PwC as an accountant until he want to Citi as an i-banker for a stint, served on AT&T's board… an ACCOUNTANT is running the show! No one has heard of him, he's not in any of the news, but ostensibly he (and the board) approved the Netflix deal after dealing with Baby Ellison. The board is the only group that gets all the bids, compares them, and ultimately decides what to agree on and send to shareholders. If they chose Baby Ellison to avoid him throwing a temper tantrum to daddy, there's no hostile takeover and conservatives can rejoice in owning all of media, right? Snap appoints Arlo CEO Matthew McRae to board of directorsPrior to his current role as CEO of Arlo Technologies, which he has held since August 2018, McRae served as Senior Vice President of Strategy at NETGEAR and as Chief Technology Officer at VIZIO for over seven yearsWHO DO YOU BLAME?Evan Spiegel - he owns 53.1% of voting power - there is no one else to blameRobert Murphy - he owns 46.4% of voting power - what if he doesn't like Matt McRae? Do they resort to a thumb war? Who are we kidding, it's still Evan Spiegel's faultInvestors, who, for whatever reason, have OK'ed the idea of dual class shares such that Spiegel and Murphy own 99.5% of the voting power and less than 8% of the economic interest - while Fidelity owns 14.6% of the shares that control 0% of the overall vote. It was banned from index inclusion because the shares had NO voting rights - but somehow Meta is ALLOWED on every index because you have voting rights even if you can NEVER EVER WIN as Zuck owns control. Send us a textThe COVID-19 pandemic exposed a harsh truth about Ontario's long-term care homes: many were woefully understaffed, a factor that helped fuel the rapid spread of the deadly virus.Doug Ford's government promised a major overhaul, including this key goal: by the end of 2024-25, LTC homes would have enough staff that each resident would receive an average of at least four hours a day of direct “hands-on care” from nurses and personal support workers (PSWs).As it worked toward that goal, the government crunched the numbers and regularly disclosed the provincial average. Although Ontario just missed its final target — recording an average of 3 hours and 49 minutes of hands-on care in the fourth quarter of the 2024-25 fiscal year — it exceeded the four-hour mark the following quarter. But data on individual homes' performance has not been made public. Until now.The Trillium, Village Media's bureau at Queen's Park, obtained the internal government data via a freedom of information request. The exclusive report includes a searchable tool that anyone can use to access the data regarding their local long-term care homes.Jessica Smith Cross, editor-in-chief of The Trillium, is our guest on tonight's episode of Closer Look.Along with her investigative report, we also talk about The Trillium's ongoing crowdfunding campaign related to the Ford government's Skills Development Fund (SDF). Send us a textIf you follow Ontario politics, you've no doubt heard of the Skills Development Fund (SDF). One of the Ford government's signature initiatives, the multi-billion-dollar program doles out taxpayer dollars to companies and organizations that provide training programs and other support for workers. Premier Doug Ford has called it “the best investment we've ever done in the province.”But the Skills Development Fund has been at the centre of a political firestorm during the current sitting of the Ontario Legislature — in large part because of investigative reporting from The Trillium, Village Media's bureau at Queen's Park. Our reporting has revealed that some recipients of SDF money have close ties to the Ford government, either through leaders who've donated to the PC Party or via well-connected lobbyists. These deep-dive stories have been fuelled by freedom of information (FOI) requests, a process that can be expensive, depending on how much time and effort it takes provincial ministries to find and prepare requested records. How expensive? The Trillium recently filed five more requests for specific information regarding the SDF, including emails and other documents — and the ministry came back with a total estimate of nearly $12,000.That's why we've decided to launch a crowdfunding campaign asking for your support. We're looking for readers and voters who value our reporting and want to help shine a light on how millions in taxpayer dollars are being spent.Joining us on tonight's Closer Look podcast to talk about the contribution drive, and the latest news on the SDF scandal, is Jessica Smith Cross, editor-in-chief of The Trillium. You can read more about the crowdfunding campaign HERE — and if you want to contribute, please click HERE.Hosted by Village Media's Michael Friscolanti and Scott Sexsmith, and produced by Derek Turner, Closer Look is a new daily podcast that goes way beyond the headlines with insightful, in-depth conversations featuring our reporters and editors, leading experts, key stakeholders and big newsmakers.Fresh episodes drop every Monday to Friday at 7 p.m. right in your local news feed — and on the show's dedicated website: closerlookpodcast.ca. Send us a textThe Carney government tabled its first-ever budget this week — and like the recent federal election, the spectre of Donald Trump looms large over the entire thing.Although the U.S. President's name doesn't actually appear anywhere in the 493-page document, the budget lays out the Liberal government's detailed plan to defend Canada from America's ramped-up trade aggressions. The key figure is $78.3 billion — the total projected deficit for 2025-2026 — with targeted spending on defence, infrastructure and attracting investment to Canada. The budget also includes major cuts to the country's civil service.Joining us on tonight's Closer Look to break down all the specifics are three Village Media journalists who were on Parliament Hill for the budget's release: Jessica Smith Cross, editor-in-chief of The Trillium, and Katherine DeClerq and Palak Mangat of Parliament Today.Hosted by Village Media's Michael Friscolanti and Scott Sexsmith, and produced by Derek Turner, Closer Look is a new daily podcast that goes way beyond the headlines with insightful, in-depth conversations featuring our reporters and editors, leading experts, key stakeholders and big newsmakers.Fresh episodes drop every Monday to Friday at 7 p.m. right in your local news feed — and on the show's dedicated website: closerlookpodcast.ca. Send us a textNot so fast. That's the message from a growing number of Ontarians trying hard to convince Premier Doug Ford to ditch his plan to outlaw speed cameras.Protesters in cities across the province rallied against Ford's proposed speed camera ban on Monday morning, just as MPPs returned to Queen's Park for a new legislative session. Ford has called the devices nothing but a “cash grab,” and his government is promising to introduce legislation that prevents cities and towns from operating automated speed enforcement (ASE) cameras. But research shows the cameras are not only effective at reducing speeds, they are actually widely supported by the general public. Many municipalities also point out that the bulk of revenue from the devices gets reinvested in road safety measures.Last week, more than a dozen former law enforcement leaders — including retired police chiefs from Peel, Halton, Niagara and Ottawa — joined the chorus of critics calling on Ford to change his mind.“The results are clear: when drivers know that automated speed enforcement cameras are in place, they slow down,” reads a letter from the group. “This means fewer tickets, lower costs, and safer roads for everyone.”On tonight's Closer Look, we revisit a recent episode that featured a panel of expert guests: Pamela Fuselli, president and CEO of the injury prevention charity Parachute; Michael Stewart of the Canadian Automobile Association; and Jack Hauen, a reporter at Village Media's The Trillium. You can watch the full episode HERE.Hosted by Village Media's Michael Friscolanti and Scott Sexsmith, and produced by Derek Turner, Closer Look is a new daily podcast that goes way beyond the headlines with insightful, in-depth conversations featuring our reporters and editors, leading experts, key stakeholders and big newsmakers.Fresh episodes drop every Monday to Friday at 7 p.m. right in your local news feed — and on the show's dedicated website: closerlookpodcast.ca. Send us a textThe Skipper and The Gipper? That's one way of putting it.Ontario Premier Doug Ford is spending big bucks to try to convince Americans that tariffs aren't the way to go — and he's enlisting the unmistakable voice of former U.S. President Ronald Reagan to help in the fight.Ford revealed Tuesday that his government is launching a $75-million advertising campaign across most major U.S. networks, highlighting the pitfalls of protectionism for American workers and consumers. The first ad, found HERE, features Reagan's famous 1987 radio address, in which he says that “high tariffs inevitably lead to retaliation by foreign countries and the triggering of fierce trade wars.”“Then the worst happens,” Reagan goes on to say in the ad. “Markets shrink and collapse, businesses and industries shut down, and millions of people lose their jobs. Throughout the world, there's a growing realization that the weight of prosperity for all nations is rejecting protectionist legislation and promoting fair and free competition.”Will the commercial blitz make any difference? Will average Americans even notice the ads? Or could all those millions be better spent somewhere else?Joining us on tonight's episode of Closer Look is Katherine DeClerq, a journalist at The Trillium who has spent a lot of time covering Doug Ford's fight against Donald Trump's tariffs.Hosted by Village Media's Michael Friscolanti and Scott Sexsmith, and produced by Derek Turner, Closer Look is a new daily podcast that goes way beyond the headlines with insightful, in-depth conversations featuring our reporters and editors, leading experts, key stakeholders and big newsmakers.Fresh episodes drop every Monday to Friday at 7 p.m. right in your local news feed — and on the show's dedicated website: closerlookpodcast.ca. Send us a textLeafs tickets, a Parisian wedding, Rob Ford's favourite nightclub owner — even Drake. This evolving story out of Queen's Park has it all.Last week, Ontario's auditor general had some scathing words for the Ford government's $2.5-billion Skills Development Fund (SDF), which supports “innovative projects” aimed at hiring, training and retraining Ontario workers.Shelley Spence found that the selection process was “not fair, transparent or accountable” — and that provincial labour ministers handpicked groups to receive hundreds of millions in taxpayer dollars against the advice of civil servants. The auditor general's findings followed exclusive reporting from Village Media's The Trillium, which revealed that multiple groups connected to the Ford government received generous SDF grants.Beneficiaries included a restaurant business with connections to a former key aide to the premier; a centre that trains people to work in clubs run by a longtime Ford associate; and a dental practice brokerage whose CEO worked closely with the wife of the former labour minister.Joining us on tonight's Closer Look to connect all the dots are three of The Trillium journalists who've been following the money: editor-in-chief Jessica Smith Cross and reporters Charlier Pinkerton and Jack Hauen.Hosted by Village Media's Michael Friscolanti and Scott Sexsmith, and produced by Derek Turner, Closer Look is a new daily podcast that goes way beyond the headlines with insightful, in-depth conversations featuring our reporters and editors, leading experts, key stakeholders and big newsmakers.Fresh episodes drop every Monday to Friday at 7 p.m. right in your local news feed — and on the show's dedicated website: closerlookpodcast.ca. Cheryl Smith, economist and portfolio manager at Trillium Asset Management, says the equity market is "very excited, very ecstatic and continuing to move up," but she warns that stock valuations are extended and she says the market is setting up a fall. Smith says two phrases -- "The Emperor is wearing no clothes" and "The band played on" -- tell the story of this market, but she expects that when the investing public wakes up to see damaging impacts of tariffs and other policies, the market will fall hard. She's not expecting that turn soon, but she says it's unavoidable if current policies are followed through to their economic conclusion. Vijay Marolia, chief investment officer at Regal Point Capital, brings his "five-lens approach" to stock research to the Market Call. He warns that investors should be worrying about euphoria over recent market results, noting that if your bartender or barber is giving you stock advice, it's a sign that the market is overbought and investors should be patient. Natalie Iannello discusses a study done for IPX1031.com which showed that 2 in 5 Americans are changing investment strategies and moving money due to a tough economy, with 42% shifting to safer investments and 36% adding new income streams. Reducing debt is a key priority, but Iannello says an alarming number of Americans have tapped their emergency assets or sold investments to get by in current conditions.

Send us a textMarit Stiles is still the face of the Ontario NDP after surviving a leadership review at her party's September convention. But she is the first to admit that the result — 68 per cent support — wasn't exactly a ringing endorsement.“I'm not satisfied with that, and the message I got very clearly in talking to NDP members at our convention a couple weeks ago was people want to defeat Doug Ford in the next election, and they were not happy that we weren't able to do that in that snap election,” Stiles said today, during an interview on Village Media's Closer Look podcast. “I think they understand what we were up against, but they need us to do better…We have to do better. I have to do better.”Stiles spent Tuesday and Wednesday in Sault Ste. Marie, where local MPP Chris Scott was recently booted from Premier Doug Ford's PC caucus after police charged him with spousal assault. Now sitting as an Independent MPP, Scott has faced numerous calls to resign in order to pave the way for a by-election.“I do think he should resign,” Stiles told the podcast. “And I don't say that lightly. Those are very serious allegations and charges. But you know, really importantly — and this is what I'm hearing as I've been in town — is the people of Sault Ste. Marie need somebody who's there right now fighting for them.”Stiles also had some things to say about The Trillium's latest scoop surrounding the Ford government's controversial Skills Development Fund.Hosted by Village Media's Michael Friscolanti and Scott Sexsmith, and produced by Derek Turner, Closer Look is a new daily podcast that goes way beyond the headlines with insightful, in-depth conversations featuring our reporters and editors, leading experts, key stakeholders and big newsmakers.Fresh episodes drop every Monday to Friday at 7 p.m. right in your local news feed — and on the show's dedicated website: closerlookpodcast.ca. Send us a textDoug Ford is making good on his promise to ban speed cameras, calling the devices nothing but a “cash grab” by Ontario municipalities.Premier Ford said when the house returns in October, his Progressive Conservatives will introduce legislation that prevents cities and towns from operating automated speed enforcement (ASE) cameras. In their place, the government is promising to create a new fund for other traffic-calming measures such as speed bumps, roundabouts, raised crosswalks, curb extensions and signage. Ford's announcement flies in the face of advice provided by numerous expert organizations, including SickKids Hospital, the Ontario Association of Chiefs of Police, and the Ontario Traffic Council.Research shows that automated cameras are not only effective at reducing speeds, they are actually widely supported by the general public. Send us a textCatch and release? Chris Scott now knows the process firsthand. The rookie MPP for Sault Ste. Marie was arrested Sunday night for alleged spousal abuse and released on bail the following day. He is charged with one count of assault and one count of assault with a weapon — the weapon being “a high chair,” according to court documents. (None of the allegations have been tested in court and Scott is presumed innocent until proven guilty). The 35-year-old was promptly booted from Doug Ford's PC caucus and is now an Independent MPP (at least for the time being). Although the NDP is demanding his resignation, Scott has yet to answer questions about the criminal case or his future as a politician.Should he step down? Can fellow MPPs force him to resign? And what do we know about Chris Scott, a one-time senior Ford staffer handpicked by the Premier to run in February's provincial election?Joining us on tonight's Closer Look are two Village Media journalists who covered the breaking story: Jessica Smith Cross, editor-in-chief at The Trillium, and Kenneth Armstrong, a reporter at SooToday. You can watch the full episode in the above YouTube video. Earlier this year, Scott sat down with SooToday for a one-on-one interview during the provincial election race.Hosted by Village Media's Michael Friscolanti and Scott Sexsmith, and produced by Derek Turner, Closer Look is a new daily podcast that goes way beyond the headlines with insightful, in-depth conversations featuring our reporters and editors, leading experts, key stakeholders and big newsmakers.Fresh episodes drop every Monday to Friday at 7 p.m. right in your local news feed — and on the show's dedicated website: closerlookpodcast.ca. Send us a textOntario Premier Doug Ford says he has faith that Prime Minister Mark Carney will back his dream of a massive tunnel underneath Highway 401.Carney recently revealed the first five projects in the national interest that will be fast-tracked, which is intended to strengthen the country's economy in the face of U.S. tariffs.Ford's highway tunnel was not on the initial list, but he told reporters this week he's confident the PM will eventually get on board."I just believe he will," Ford said. "Considering it's the busiest highway in North America, and 50 per cent of the GDP comes through Toronto, and [gridlock is] costing us $58 billion of lost productivity, I think it's pretty national."Village Media's new Closer Look podcast dug a little deeper into Ford's tunnel vision during a recent episode with guests Jessica Smith Cross, editor-in-chief of The Trillium, and Professor Matti Siemiatycki, director of the Infrastructure Institute at the University of Toronto.“I think we can start from the basic premise that this is likely build-able, that you likely could build a tunnel of this length in this location,” Siemiatycki told the podcast. “The question isn't just: ‘Can we build it?' The question is: ‘Should we? Does this actually solve the congestion problem? How much does it cost? And are there better alternatives that we could address this issue at a lower cost?”You can watch the full episode HERE.Hosted by Village Media's Michael Friscolanti and Scott Sexsmith, and produced by Derek Turner, Closer Look is a new daily podcast that goes way beyond the headlines with insightful, in-depth conversations featuring our reporters and editors, leading experts, key stakeholders and big newsmakers.Fresh episodes drop every Monday to Friday at 7 p.m. right in your local news feed — and on the show's dedicated website: closerlookpodcast.ca. Send us a textJudgment day looms for Bonnie Crombie. The Ontario Liberal leader faces a mandatory leadership review at the party's annual general meeting this weekend, and it's certainly not certain which way the vote will go.Although Crombie has admitted to being caught off guard by Doug Ford's snap election call — and faced criticism for making health care the centrepiece of her party's platform — the Liberals did win enough seats to regain official party status. We'll know by Sunday night if the party faithful still have faith.SEE: Should she stay or should she go? Liberals split on Bonnie Crombie ahead of voteJoining us on tonight's Closer Look podcast are two journalists from The Trillium who will be covering this weekend's Liberal get-together: Editor-in-Chief Jessica Smith Cross and reporter Steve Cornwell. In case you missed it, tonight's show also includes snippets from our recent interviews with both Crombie and Nate Erskine-Smith, a former leadership rival who has been very vocal about the need for a new voice at the top of the party.VIDEO: Nate Erskine-Smith tells us why Bonnie Crombie needs to goVIDEO: ‘I'm not going anywhere': Bonnie Crombie tells us why she should keep her jobHosted by Village Media's Michael Friscolanti and Scott Sexsmith, and produced by Derek Turner, Closer Look is a new daily podcast that goes way beyond the headlines with insightful, in-depth conversations featuring our reporters and editors, leading experts, key stakeholders and big newsmakers.Fresh episodes drop every Monday to Friday at 7 p.m. right in your local news feed — and on the show's dedicated website: closerlookpodcast.ca. Send us a textTonight on Village Media's new daily podcast: Amid a summer heat wave, parents are calling on the province to create new regulations to deal with scorching temperatures in daycares and classrooms. As heat waves continue to grip the province, parents are speaking out about the "sweltering" conditions inside some child-care centres. The Trillium, Village Media's bureau at Queen's Park, reported this week that some kids are being left in diapers as a way to keep cool. While some facilities have window or portable air conditioning units, parents say the devices aren't enough to keep the rooms comfortable. As The Trillium reported, parents are calling on the province to set maximum allowable temperatures for child-care centres — a move supported by Opposition parties.Pressed about the issue at a news conference this week, Premier Doug Ford did not rule out implementing air conditioning standards in child-care settings."It's terrible that kids have to sit in the boiling hot heat. And I'm all for putting window air conditioning units in and helping them out ... any way they can," Ford said. "But this has been going on for decades and decades and decades, and we need to help the young kids any way we possibly can."Sneh Duggal, deputy editor of The Trillium, has been leading the coverage of this story and joins us tonight on Closer Look.Spoiler alert: Building a giant highway tunnel is probably not the solution to this particular problem.
We start with 3 Stakes races from Woodbine - the Trillium, the Niagara and the Seagram, then on to Saratoga for the $1 Million Whitney. Garnet Barnsdale was at the Meadowlands for the 100th Hambletonian. He tells us how that race went and about success on the day from James MacDonald and the great Sylvia Hanover. Less than 2 weeks until the 166th King's Plate, so Woodbine's Klaus Ebner teases us with a tempting parimutuel buffet of available wagers. We talk with Melanie Giddings, the leading Canadian trainer at Saratoga and we have natural hattricks from 2 jockeys – Ryan Munger at Woodbine and Ismael Mosqueira at Ajax Downs.
They ran the Trillium and Ontario Colleen Stakes at Woodbine Saturday and that made it a great day for jockey Sahin Civaci. At Saratoga, it was the Jim Dandy with the heavy favourite, Sovereign. Only one Canadian trainer has found the winners circle at Saratoga this summer and we will tell you who she is. We have a pair of inspirational jockey stories in this podcast A year ago, Rico Walcott was diagnosed with brain cancer and given maybe 18 months to live, but now he's cancer free, winning races and making his backers a lot of coin. We've got Walcott and his agent, Ron Burke Then there's 71-year-old Perry Ouzts still bringing in winners and setting an amazing record Saturday at Belterra park. The terrific pacing mare, Sylvia Hanover went really fast at a track in Massachusetts last week...we chat with her trainer Marc Steacy. At Ajax Downs, 2 horses are carving out perfect records; we have their latest wins and a son of Bulldog Hanover made an eye-catching debut at Mohawk last Friday. You will wish that you bet on him.

The classes and videos take an approach that all can not only understand, but learn from without complicating things. He started foraging in 2008 and since then has covered thousands of miles on foot foraging and learning plants in his state of Indiana. Josh often spends 40 or more hours a week in nature and loves to encourage others to connect with nature and themselves. He has worked with girl scout troops, boy scout troops, and conservation societies in his state. The connection with nature goes deep as he has healed himself from depression and controlled a lifelong struggle with it and suicidal thoughts by connecting with nature in unconventional ways. He loves giving thanks to nature and embraces the title of “Tree Hugger,” challenging the idea that being called a “Tree Hugger” is a bad thing. His approach to teaching is down to earth and often times will include some light humor and references to popular media as a way to bring us all together. His Youtube channel and business is named after his favorite plant, Trillium, because of the trinity of leaves representing healthful Mind, Soul, and Nature. Welcome back to The DC Beer Show, your hub for all things craft beer across DC, Maryland, and Virginia! This episode, we welcome Tasha Dixon from Ardent Craft Ales in Richmond, Virginia, for a lively conversation packed with brewing insights, local flavor, and community celebrations. The show kicks off with the crew sharing what's in their glasses—expect shout-outs to Trillium's foeder-aged lager, Ardent's Bohemian Pilsner and IPA 14, and a juicy Kolsch from Bearchase. Tasha dives into Ardent's brewing philosophy, revealing the story behind their flagship IPA 14 (it's all about that 14th, all-Citra batch!) and the magic of scaling up their canning operations with a lean, cross-trained team. If you've ever wondered what it takes to juggle 12- and 16-ounce cans or wrangle small-batch innovation into a flagship core lineup, this behind-the-scenes peek is for you!Get ready for some hop talk as Tasha explains the role of Yakima Chief's Cryo Pop hops in Ardent's vibrant “Pop!” pale ale, and dishes on tweaking recipes for maximum aroma on a budget. The episode takes a fun detour into cannabis-inspired brewing, with Tasha describing her forays into terpene beers—think Pineapple Express and Winner Winner. While there's no THC or CBD involved (yet, Virginia law!), these botanic brews deliver big “wow” factor and bring curious crowds into the taproom. The conversation also digs into the resilience and evolution of the Richmond beer scene. Tasha speaks candidly about recent brewery closures in the area, the pressures of leases, and the importance of community support—plus what makes Richmond's Scott's Addition neighborhood such a vibrant, collaborative hotspot for breweries, cideries, and distilleries. With Pride Month upon us, Tasha shares how Ardent and their Scotts Addition neighbors are teaming up for a Pride Bar Crawl, with special releases (including a berry seltzer called “Berry Proud”), passports, and proceeds benefiting Richmond Habitat for Humanity's Pride Build. Expect plenty of events throughout June and again for Virginia Pride in September, all designed to foster inclusion and celebration across the community. As always, our hosts shout out coming events in DC and the broader DMV, including Womxn's Brew Culture Club meetups at Denizens, a members-only beer share at Sovereign, and the Wheatland Spring Land Beer Fest (hello, Tre Fontane!). They also salute longtime Richmond beer fans—special birthday cheers to Frank Chang!—and encourage everyone to experience Richmond's hospitality, food, and ever-evolving beer scene. The episode wraps up with a heartfelt toast to closed and closing breweries, the promise of more openings ahead, and the enduring truth: Beer always helps. So grab your favorite brew and join us for another round with The DC Beer Show—where the spirit of craft, community, and creativity never stops flowing! This fall, the Meadowlark Day Program held an official ribbon cutting ceremony, to celebrate the unique mental health program for Salem-Keizer students in need. Trillium Community Health Plan and the school district had an existing partnership to provide lower levels of mental health care in some schools. But for some kids, their challenges from depression, anxiety, PTSD and other disorders are so steep as to make it impossible for them to be able to get any educational benefit in school. Meadowlark is a 10-12 week program that gives kids intense treatment as well as instructional support every day, so they don’t fall further behind. We get the details from Chris Moore, the director of mental health and social-emotional learning for the district, and from Chiharu Blatt, Trillium’s vice president of community services in the Willamette Valley and Central Oregon.
