Il semble que le constant intérêt de Debussy pour la composition de mélodies soit né lors de sa fréquentation, de 1881 à 1884, des époux Vasnier : très cultivés, grands amateurs d'art, ils lui firent connaître le monde de la poésie et de la peinture. C'est pour la jeune et belle Mme Vasnier (Marie), dont il était amoureux, qu'il écrivit, entre dix-sept et vingt et un ans, ses vingt-sept premières mélodies. Marie, qui était soprano aigu et qu'il accompagnait au piano, les créa toutes de sa « bouche de fée mélodieuse ». À l'origine pour voix seule, les mélodies de Debussy ont connu un tel succès que certaines d'entre elles, grâce aux arrangements pour quatre voix mixtes, sont devenues partie intégrante du répertoire des choeurs...
