Tim Conway Jr Show Hour 3 (6.1) Conway kicks off the hour with a mission to help a classic Mexican restaurant in L.A., plus the wild story of a 6th grader discovering an 80-million-year-old fossil. Not bad for middle school — most kids are just trying to survive homework. Then the show turns to a scary celebrity security story involving Sabrina Carpenter, who was granted a temporary restraining order after a man allegedly trespassed at her Hollywood Hills home, tried to open her front door, and assaulted a security guard. The protective order also covers her sister Sarah and Sarah’s partner, with court dates coming up in June. Later, Conway and Mark Thompson get ready to head to Engelbert Humperdinck’s concert, but things take a classic Conway turn with a story about getting kicked out of a casino — recently. That leads into a bigger conversation about young people, gambling apps, and the growing issue of sports betting addiction. The hour wraps with the latest on the massive Kimberly-Clark warehouse fire in Ontario, California. The 1.2 million-square-foot distribution center was destroyed in a huge arson fire, and demolition crews are now tearing down what remains. Tim Conway Jr Show Hour 3 (5.29) Conway kicks off the hour with a classic showbiz throwback: when Johnny Carson liked a comedian, he waved them over to the couch — and now Neil gets the couch treatment! Conway also recaps hosting the 2026 ACG Awards Gala, the “Oscars for Business,” celebrating major middle-market companies across Orange County and the Inland Empire. Big shoutout to Consolidated Contracting and all the companies expanding, building, and staying bullish. Then the crew dives into Hawaiian Airlines cutting free hot meals in the Main Cabin on most mainland flights, replacing them with prepaid meals from chef Sheldon Simeon. Conway jokes that Main Cabin is where “the animals” sit, which launches a hilarious conversation about airplane behavior, first-class air rage, fame, privacy, and why being famous may not be worth the headache. Later, the legendary Engelbert Humperdinck, the King of Romance, is coming into the studio at 90 years old with new music. The Foosh grew up on Engelbert and knows all the hits, leading to a perfect game show idea: “Seniors, Name That Tune.” The hour wraps with a look back at the final Carol Burnett Show in 1978, which drew around 30 million viewers, plus a wild Santa Monica story involving a mountain lion roaming the neighborhood before being immobilized. S04.E09 - From Page to Stage: Mike Bernard Discusses His Book 'Concert Dates'

Seeing Them Live

Play Episode Listen Later May 24, 2026 33:31

In this episode, Charles sits down with Mike Bernard, a Boston-area author, screenwriter, and playwright who came to writing later in life and hasn't slowed down since. Mike has published eight novels, written a stage musical, and optioned multiple screenplays through prestigious competitions including the Academy Nicholl Fellowship, the Page International Screenwriting Awards, ScreenCraft, and the Nantucket Film Festival. The conversation weaves together music, memory, friendship, and the creative life — all anchored in the gritty, soulful sounds of the 1970s and early '80s. Mike's live music journey begins with a memorable — if reluctant — first show: escorting his grandmother to see Liberace at the Cape Cod Melody Tent. His real musical awakening came when he saw the J. Geils Band at the old Boston Garden as a teenager, an experience he still counts among his best. The blues-driven energy of "House Party" and "Musta Got Lost" made a lifelong impression, and he draws a sharp distinction between that era of J. Geils and the MTV-era band that followed. Other standout shows include Elvis Costello at the Cape Cod Coliseum — where the opening silhouettes under blue light during "Watching the Detectives" hit him like a gut punch — and an extraordinary 1990 benefit concert at Worcester's Clark University featuring Don Henley, Glenn Frey, Timothy B. Schmit, Bob Seger, Jackson Browne, Bonnie Raitt, and Jimmy Buffett all on the same bill. And for pure comedic gold, Mike recounts the moment a Little River Band guitar pick landed — and stuck — to his bare thigh at the Melody Tent, with zero competition from the crowd for the souvenir. Charles and Mike then discuss Mike's book Concert Dates; a fictional story told in interview form — inspired by Daisy Jones & The Six — that follows six friends who meet at a concert at age 15 and are reunited decades later through a video diary. The backdrop is the Cape Cod Coliseum, a converted hockey rink that hosted an extraordinary run of classic rock shows from 1972 to 1983, including Van Halen, The Clash, Talking Heads, Peter Frampton, Lynyrd Skynyrd, and J. Geils (twelve times). Mike also shares the remarkable story of connecting with photographer Rudy Childs — a previous Seeing Them Live guest — through a Facebook group dedicated to the Coliseum, only to discover that Rudy's candid parking lot photos included a picture of Mike and his own friends from a Clash show. Listeners who enjoy music, nostalgia, and deeply human storytelling will find Concert Dates — and Mike's wider catalog, including Crossing the Sagamore — well worth picking up on Amazon. BANDS: Aerosmith, Black Sabbath, Billy Joel, Bob Seger, Bon Iver, Bonnie Raitt, Don Henley, Eagles (Glenn Frey, Timothy B. Schmit), Elvis Costello, Engelbert Humperdinck, Frankie Avalon, Huey Lewis and the News, J. This episode celebrates the artistic accomplishments of two of the finest twentieth century singers to come from the environs of Dresden, Peter Schreier and Olaf Bär. Both were former child choristers in the Dresdner Kreuzchor (albeit from two different generations). Both went on as adults to rise to the top of the musical firmament, particularly in their performance of German art song.  Each of these two singers were celebrated in the music of Bach, and in their performance of what their fellow Germans call Kunstlieder and both made memorable and substantial recordings of Christmas art songs, Schreier's in 1979, accompanied by the late Norman Shetler, and Bär's in 1996, with the superb Helmut Deutsch. The focus in this episode is on their performance on these respective recordings of the Christmas songs of Max Reger, Engelbert Humperdinck, and Hugo Wolf. We also hear a recording of Schreier during his days as a boy alto in the Dresdner Kreuzchor) singing a selection from the Weihnachtslieder of Peter Cornelius. Countermelody is a podcast devoted to the glory and the power of the human voice raised in song. Singer and vocal aficionado Daniel Gundlach explores great singers of the past and present focusing in particular on those who are less well-remembered today than they should be. Daniel's lifetime in music as a professional countertenor, pianist, vocal coach, voice teacher, and author yields an exciting array of anecdotes, impressions, and “inside stories.” At Countermelody's core is the celebration of great singers of all stripes, their instruments, and the connection they make to the words they sing. Bell brings blink-182's "Greatest Hits", their first such compilation, released in 2005. A fun, often goofy release from the masters of pop-punk, it came out two years after their fifth album. Adam's pick, Engelbert Humperdinck's "20 Great Hits", released in 1977, raises two questions. Firstly, what constitutes a "great hit"? Second, what is a "middle of the road balladeer"? The boys grapple with both questions. Finally, Jamie's pick, Patsy Cline's "Patsy Cline's Greatest Hits", is a brief exploration of Patsy Cline's unfortunately short music career. Will this episode be our greatest hit? Come along and find out!

Music was destined to be in the family – dad played the drums when he was younger, and mum the violin. Nicki's brother, Tim, is very musical too – a guitarist and singer who is a fabulous song-writer. However, her two sisters, Allison and Carolyn, stayed away from music – probably plenty to listen to already in the household! The family moved down to Tenterden in Kent when Nicki was four years old. Always a keen singer, one of her early memories was sitting next to the radio, listening to the new chart rundown and singing along to all the songs, when Auntie Sally, her Godmother, came in and said to mum and dad, "She'll be a singer when she grows up!"The first ‘gig' came at the age of seven, when Nicki was chosen to sing a solo - the first verse of "O Little Town of Bethlehem" at the Infants' School Christmas Concert! From then on there was no turning back! A few years later she won the local talent contest, and within the year had joined her first band, Krisp, run by Tim and his friend Kelvin. They worked the most salubrious places – working mens' clubs and holiday camps – wooh! From the age of 16, Nicki studied Music and Drama at West Kent College in Tonbridge, Kent, passing her ‘A' Levels two years later. At the annual college musical, she played the lead role of Laurey in Oklahoma!, earning rave reviews for her performance. She then moved up to London and started auditioning for bands and theatre shows. Not many know that Nicki actually was part of a duo in the early 1980s – name of Whisky and Sofa! They released a song called "Dirty Den," about the Eastenders character! It was played on the Radio One Breakfast Show and that was about it! Amazing though, it was written by an extremely well-known writer, Barry Mason. He wrote "The Last Waltz" for Engelbert Humperdinck and "Delilah" for Tom Jones. Credibility sadly was NOT in existence on "Dirty Den."Nicki started working the pubs and clubs, moving onto gay pubs and clubs a short while later – The Spread Eagle in Shoreditch was her first! However the most exciting show for Nicki was at the Player of the Season annual dinner/dance at Tottenham Hotspur FC – her team! They had just signed a new player and were introducing him to the fans – a player by the name of Paul Gascoigne, and Gazza and all the other players got up on stage with her to perform a couple of songs – a special moment. Nicki had been working on the gay scene for some time, when she made one of her regular visits to perform in a club in...

SynopsisIn the 1930s, many Americans had a hard time making ends meet. During the Great Depression, opera and concert tickets didn't always figure into most family's budgets, but thanks to live radio broadcasts, American families enjoyed a veritable Golden Age of operatic and symphonic music in the comfort of their homes. On Christmas Day in 1931, NBC made radio history when it broadcast a matinee performance of Engelbert Humperdinck's opera Hansel und Gretel live from the stage of the old Metropolitan Opera House in New York City to radio listeners coast to coast. The on-air host was American composer Deems Taylor, whose opera Peter Ibbetson would be included in a live Met broadcast the following spring. And on Christmas Day in 1937, music of Antonio Vivaldi opened the first live NBC Symphony broadcast conducted by legendary Italian conductor Arturo Toscanini. Live NBC Symphony broadcasts under Toscanini would continue until the conductor's retirement in 1954. Along with Bach, Beethoven and Brahms, Toscanini included a handful of American works in his programs and, in 1938, conducted the broadcast premiere of Samuel Barber's well-known Adagio for Strings.Music Played in Today's ProgramEnglebert Humperdinck (1854-1921) Hansel and Gretel Overture; Bamberg Symphony; Karl Anton Rickenbacher, cond. Donald Macleod explores the life and music of German composer Engelbert Humperdinck German composer, Engelbert Humperdinck, became an international celebrity with his music for the stage. His lasting hit was his opera, Hansel and Gretel. There were other huge successes too. Die Heirat wider Willen (The Reluctant Marriage) was highly praised after its premiere at the Royal Opera in Berlin, and Humperdinck took 19 curtain calls in London for his stage work Das Wunder (The Miracle). In New York, at the Metropolitan Opera House, after the premiere of Humperdinck's opera Königskinder (King's Children), the applause just kept going so that the management had to turn the lights off, in order to force the audience to leave.Humperdinck was born in Siegburg, and from early on his parents encouraged his musical abilities, provided he focused on his other school commitments, too. He went on to study at the Cologne Conservatoire and soon fell under the spell of Wagner whom he met, and later worked with, in the preparation of Wagner's opera, Parsifal. Humperdinck travelled Europe, and in the early 1890s he saw the premiere of his own opera Hansel and Gretel, which was performed on sixty-nine German stages within one year. Humperdinck became a professor of composition in Berlin and, between his teaching duties, he continued to write many works for the stage. Opera houses clambered to give the premiere of a new work by Humperdinck and he became a giant of his times.
