His name is X-Y-Z. At least, that's what's on his gravestone in the town of Deep River. The man robbed a bank in 1899 and was shot dead during the attempt. The problem is that no one knows who he was. Perhaps the lady, dressed all in black, who put a flower on his grave each year on the anniversary of his death, knows his identity. But, nobody ever approached her and asked her if she knew who he was. This intriguing story is told by the Curator of the Deep River Historical Society, Rhonda Ferristall.

What is it like to go to war? What does the experience have to teach us, and could it in any way be a spiritual endeavor? What does the Temple of Mars have to teach us in a climate-changing world? Karl Marlantes is a Rhodes Scholar who put aside graduate studies at Oxford University to lead a Marine rifle platoon in Vietnam in 1968. He is featured extensively in the Ken Burns/Lynn Novick documentary series, The Vietnam War. His memoir, What It Is Like to Go to War, and novel, Matterhorn, address what we ask our nation's young warriors to do from within a cultural environment that denies the multifaceted truth of what it means to be a warrior. His recent novels Deep River and Cold Victory address big questions of agency and what it means to recognize oneself as a historical actor. Is combat terrifying? Exhilarating? Mystical? Carnal? Is it everything all at once? If we only acknowledge the experience as negative, how might that cause repression and misunderstanding in a world unlikely to leave war behind permanently? If climate change is not successfully addressed as soon as possible, the geopolitical situation may become more rivalrous and difficult. We need to understand the nature of war, of our relationship to our shadow, in order to chart an honest course to a better future. As you will hear in our conversation, Janice didn't know she was suffering from deep grief until she was in her 30s.   Janice Jernigan's life's work is centered around deepening connections within, with nature, and with each other. This shows up in her roles as a vineyard and winery owner, inner trailblazer, and best-selling author.    She and her husband are the founders and cultivators of Serenberry Vineyards in the beautiful mountains near Blue Ridge, Georgia. They are also owners and caretakers of The Vineyard House, an early 1900s farmhouse, where guests linger for an extended weekend while connecting with nature's simple pleasures.    Given her lived experience and decades of leading change for one of America's largest privately held companies, Janice has come to embrace life as an inner trailblazer. This way of being requires a willingness to go into the deepest parts of ourselves to learn, heal, and grow - especially when traversing life's crossroads and turning points.    In her courageous and heartfelt memoir, Opening Up to Grief, Janice shares her journey with loss and love, growing up with grief as a surviving sibling since the age of three, and her path to hope and healing. She offers loving guidance for grievers to feel seen and acknowledged, gain insight into their own personal journey, and spark a level of healing that is truly transformative.    Beyond trailblazing, Janice enjoys exploring nature's abundant gifts, capturing stories and discoveries through the written word, and sharing meaningful moments with those she holds dear.    **TRIGGER WARNING** This episode covers sensitive subject matter and is not suitable for all listeners. Welcome to LEAP, where we sit down with people from all walks of life to hear their unique stories and perspectives on grief.    In this episode, I'm joined by Amy Daughters, a freelance writer and debut author, and her dear friend Dana Dugas Rivera.   Their story is one of reconnection in the wake of heartache through letter writing. After reconnecting on Facebook after 30 years, Amy was inspired to begin writing weekly letters to Dana and her son Parker, who was battling cancer. When Parker passed away, Amy continued to write Dana, and the two became unlikely pen pals.   Their friendship and the power of letter writing had a profound impact on Amy's life, leading her to write letters to all of her Facebook friends. Through this experience, she learned the true value of connecting with individuals behind the social media profiles and how love and friendship can transcend politics, beliefs, and lifestyle.   Amy and Dana's story is one of inspiration and the power of human connection. So, join us as we sit down with Amy and Dana to hear more about their incredible journey.   **TRIGGER WARNING** This episode covers sensitive subject matter and is not suitable for all listeners. In this episode, I sit down with Simona Costantini, who shares her personal journey of how loss has triggered fears about safety. She opens up about losing her friend in a freak accident and the impact that community played in her healing journey. Simona also shares her experience with the death of her cousin at 17 and how these losses led to a phase of partying and a four-year blackout in her memory.   As she navigated her grief, Simona learned to trust again and have faith in synchronicities. She shares the first spiritual signs she started to receive and how she began to see spirits in multiple ways.   Simona also delves into the powerful role that music plays in our memories and how songs can take us to memories we thought were buried. She also talks about psychic abilities running through her family and how learning to ask for signs and guidance from the universe has helped her in her journey.   Towards the end of the episode, Simona talks about what self-love looks like for her today. Join us as we listen to her powerful story and gain insight on how to navigate loss and grief.   Simona Costantini is the Founder and CEO of Costantini Productions, a full-service podcast production agency. Emily started 2023 with a bit of a reading slump, but you'd never know it! Some of the books she enjoyed since our last regular episode are Oona Out of Order by Margarita Montimore, Trespasses by Louise Kennedy, The Change by Kirsten Miller, Hello Beautiful by Ann Napolitano (coming out 3/14/2023), and What the Fortune Teller Would Have Said by Shuly Cawood. For the third year in a row, Chris kicked off her January reading with a novel from Alice Hoffman's Practical Magic Series: The Rules of Magic. She's also brushing up on her stirfrying skills with The Wok: Recipes and Techniques by J. Kenji López-Alt. Speaking of cooking, Emily attended a cooking class with the cookbook author Julia Turshen. Chris visited a couple of used bookstores: The Book Barn in Niantic, CT, and Bennett's Books in Deep River, CT. We also had a lovely joint jaunt to New Haven, where we checked in on a large Little Free Library in Wooster Square after a yummy lunch at Haven Hot Chicken. We are extending our listener top reads of 2022 submissions until January 22nd, so if you haven't submitted your Top 10 Reads, please send them our way!
