Join The Revd Canon Dr Alison Joyce, Rector of St Bride's, and St Bride's Choir for this week's reflection in words and music. "Christe, adoramus te" – Christ, we adore you – are the opening words of the short but moving choral anthem by Claudio Monteverdi which opens this week's reflection. Monteverdi was maestro di cappella at St Mark's, Venice for 30 years in the first half of the seventeenth century and was an ardent champion of using music to convey the emotional import of words which he achieved beautifully in this motet. Our reading is from the St Matthew's Gospel and includes one of the many biblical Gospel passages that seem bewildering and hard to understand. Alison remembers the uncomfortable reaction of a group of theological students when she read it to them and goes on to offer her understanding of its meaning which is embedded in the challenge of how we respond to Christ's presence in our lives. Our closing hymn is the ever-popular "Lead us, heavenly Father, lead us" by James Edmeston, who wrote a staggering 2000+ hymn texts. This one was written for the Children of the London Orphan Asylum. Edmeston took a great interest in the welfare of orphaned children which is reflected in the line "Guard us, guide use, keep us, feed us." At 80, Regan Burke is still organizing, advocating, and speaking out.But her path to becoming a respected activist, columnist, memoirist, and political influencer was anything but straightforward. Before she found sobriety in her twenties, drugs and alcohol shaped much of her daily life. She attended five different high schools, searching for direction until one perceptive nun recognized her talent and changed the course of her future by encouraging her to write. That spark ignited a lifelong commitment to telling the truth. For decades, Regan immersed herself in political organizing, volunteering for campaigns she believed could make a difference. A devoted member of the recovery community, she carried the lessons of honesty and accountability into her writing, becoming a blogger, newspaper columnist, and memoirist known for speaking candidly about politics, power, and personal struggle.Today, despite living with chronic pain, Regan refuses to retreat from public life. She organizes rallies for people with limited mobility, mentors younger political leaders, and works tirelessly to encourage civic engagement. While she may no longer knock on doors, her determination to create change remains as strong as ever.In this conversation, Regan reflects on sobriety, activism, aging, courage, and why using your voice may be more important now than ever. And when the work gets hard? She sings. Choir music helps ease her pain, sharpens her mind, and reminds her that community can be one of life's most powerful forms of healing."It's risky to stand up - it takes bravery." - Regan BurkeConnect with Regan:Blog: ReganBurke.comEmail: Regan.Burke@gmail.comShining the Light on Age-Wise Collective—Women Over 70 is proud to be part of the Age-Wise Collective, a group of women podcasters championing pro-aging voices. Have you ever noticed that good pedagogy and the perfect methodology only goes so far? The job of a teacher, conductor or a coach is a complicated cocktail with almost infinitely changing ingredients. The main variables can be found within the groups themselves. In this episode of That Ain't In the Bible, Jonathan and Brandon step directly into one of the fastest ways to start a church argument: music styles in worship. Should church music be traditional? Contemporary? Hymns only? Full band? Choir and orchestra? Acoustic? Loud? Quiet? And perhaps the biggest question of all: does the Bible actually command one specific style of music for the church? With a few spicy hot takes and some honest pushback against personal preferences disguised as biblical mandates, the guys discuss what Scripture does clearly command—namely that believers are to worship, sing, and glorify God together. At the same time, they challenge listeners to be careful not to elevate cultural tastes and personal opinions to the level of divine instruction.Because while singing praises to God is absolutely in the Bible…the commandment, “Thou shalt use only this musical style”?Yeah… that ain't in the Bible.10 Key Bible Verses on Singing Article

Dr. Brian Hill (Senior Pastor), "Lessons From James: In This Together", Children's Time, Choir, Blended Worship Praise Team (8:45 Service). 13. Is anyone among you in trouble? Let them pray. Is anyone happy? Let them sing songs of praise. 14. Is anyone among you sick? Let them call the elders of the church to pray over them and anoint them with oil in the name of the Lord. 15. And the prayer offered in faith will make the sick person well; the Lord will raise them up. If they have sinned, they will be forgiven. 16. Therefore confess your sins to each other and pray for each other so that you may be healed. The prayer of a righteous person is powerful and effective. 17. Elijah was a human being, even as we are. He prayed earnestly that it would not rain, and it did not rain on the land for three and a half years. 18. Again he prayed, and the heavens gave rain, and the earth produced its crops. 19. My brothers and sisters, if one of you should wander from the truth and someone should bring that person back, 20. remember this: Whoever turns a sinner from the error of their way will save them from death and cover over a multitude of sins. (James 5:13-20 NIV)
Send us Fan MailMy guest today is Elisabeth Storrs, author of Fables and Lies, listed in the Visual Arts category on Art In Fiction.Watch on YouTube: https://youtu.be/lCJfOypSQr4The genesis of Fables and Lies: how a 30-year obsession with Priam's Gold and its mysterious disappearance after the Russians took it from Berlin led Elisabeth to create Freya, a young German woman working at the Museum of Pre- and Early History in Berlin as the war closes in.Himmler's SS Ahnenerbe, the pseudo-academic research institute that weaponized archaeology to justify Nazi ideology, and how the curator of Freya's museum being a member of it transformed what began as a novel about two women into something far more complex and sinister. The real inspiration behind Indiana Jones: Himmler's belief in the occult, Atlantis, and the Holy Grail, and the expeditions he sent to Tibet and Bolivia that Spielberg later drew on.Writing from inside the Nazi regime: Elisabeth's personal hesitation about telling the story from a German point of view given her father's experience as an Australian soldier in World War II, and why she decided the story needed to be told anyway. The Brenner family as microcosm: how Freya, her morally anchored father Konrad, her MAGA-adjacent mother Elsa, and her fully indoctrinated sister Volla each represent a different response to life under the Reich. Why Freya had to start as a true believer: the challenge of creating a protagonist who is indoctrinated, the small cracks in her worldview from the opening pages, and how Darien, the Cambridge-educated outsider archaeologist, opens her eyes.Berlin as a character in the novel: Elisabeth's research trip to the city, the walking tour with a Humboldt University history student, and the discovery that the Museum of Pre- and Early History sat next door to Gestapo headquarters on what is now the Topography of Terror site. The parallels to today: how Elisabeth finished the novel before the current global rise of fascism made it feel even more relevant, and what the preconditions for Hitler's rise in Weimar Germany have in common with what we are seeing now.The carpet bombing of Berlin, the Soviet artillery siege, and the absurdity of dropping leaflets telling civilians to overthrow the regime while destroying their city around them.A reading from the opening pages of Fables and Lies: Freya cycling home through Berlin on 24 August 1939, and her first encounter with Dieter, the jazz-loving teenager whose punishment plants the first seed of doubt. What Elisabeth is working on next: a four-timeline novel tracing Priam's Gold from a Bronze Age goldsmith in Troy through Schliemann's 1873 discovery, the Russian Trophy Brigade, and Freya's granddaughter piecing it all together in the 1990s.Read more about Elisabeth Storrs on her website: https://elisabethstorrs.com/Are you enjoying The Art In Fiction Podcast? What if the key to making people care about rangelands wasn't a fact sheet, a policy brief, or even a podcast — but interactive art that people can view, hear, touch, and smell? WSU Extension's Stephen Bramwell joins the show to talk about a first-of-its-kind public art project that's deploying multisensory exhibits across 18 states to reach audiences who've never thought twice about grasslands or the people who steward them. From tactile fiber samples and scent jars to life-size 3D sheep cutouts, this is rangeland outreach like you've never heard of — and you can host an exhibit or submit your own art at grasslandsproject.org. Music by Lewis Roise. Support for The Art of Range comes from RanchBot and the Western Extension Risk Management Education Center. The transcript of this episode and links to resources mentioned in the interview are available at artofrange.com.

Many of the 800+ SFN Mentor Fathers, who are raising kids with special needs, have said: “I wish there was something like this when we first received our child's diagnosis. I felt so isolated. There was no one within my family, at work, at church or within my friend group who understood or could relate to what I was going through.”SFN Mentor Fathers share their experiences with younger dads closer to the beginning of their journey raising a child with the same or similar special needs. The SFN Mentor Fathers do NOT offer legal or medical advice, that is what lawyers and doctors do. They simply share their experiences and how they have made the most of challenging situations.Join the SFN U.S. Tour in one of 60+ locations all across the U.S. from May 21st to June 21st. Father Greg Boyle has spent nearly four decades alongside gang members in Los Angeles, founding Homeboy Industries from the poorest parish in the city. "An employed gang member may or may not go back to prison, but a healed one won't ever go back to prison." In this episode with Mark Labberton, Boyle reflects on what heals a life inside the world's largest gang-intervention program. Together they discuss tenderness as the highest form of spiritual maturity, kinship as the true goal (with peace and justice as byproducts), why "the poor evangelize you," why demonizing collapses on both political sides, and the mental-health roots of homelessness and gang life. Episode Highlights "The whole incarnation was necessary, not because of sin or salvation even. It's just, for me, it's God's love needed to become tender." "I think that's the singular agenda item for our God is just to look at you and say, 'Ah, you're here.'" "No kinship, no peace. No kinship, no justice. No kinship, no equality. It's how it works." "An employed gang member may or may not go back to prison, but a healed one won't ever go back to prison." "There aren't good guys and bad guys, you know? And God doesn't see it that way, as hard as that is for us to conceive." About Greg Boyle Father Gregory Boyle, SJ, is an American Jesuit priest and the founder of Homeboy Industries in Los Angeles, the largest gang-intervention, rehabilitation, and re-entry program in the world.
