Kinship and Gang Life, with Gregory Boyle

Father Greg Boyle has spent nearly four decades alongside gang members in Los Angeles, founding Homeboy Industries from the poorest parish in the city. "An employed gang member may or may not go back to prison, but a healed one won't ever go back to prison." In this episode with Mark Labberton, Boyle reflects on what heals a life inside the world's largest gang-intervention program. Together they discuss tenderness as the highest form of spiritual maturity, kinship as the true goal (with peace and justice as byproducts), why "the poor evangelize you," why demonizing collapses on both political sides, and the mental-health roots of homelessness and gang life. Episode Highlights "The whole incarnation was necessary, not because of sin or salvation even. It's just, for me, it's God's love needed to become tender." "I think that's the singular agenda item for our God is just to look at you and say, 'Ah, you're here.'" "No kinship, no peace. No kinship, no justice. No kinship, no equality. It's how it works." "An employed gang member may or may not go back to prison, but a healed one won't ever go back to prison." "There aren't good guys and bad guys, you know? And God doesn't see it that way, as hard as that is for us to conceive." About Greg Boyle Father Gregory Boyle, SJ, is an American Jesuit priest and the founder of Homeboy Industries in Los Angeles, the largest gang-intervention, rehabilitation, and re-entry program in the world. A native Angeleno, he served as pastor of Dolores Mission in Boyle Heights from 1986 to 1992. In 2024 he received the Presidential Medal of Freedom, along with the California Peace Prize and Notre Dame's 2017 Laetare Medal. Send us Fan MailMy guest today is Caroline Woods, author of The Lunar Housewife, listed in the Visual Arts category on Art In Fiction.Watch on YouTube: https://youtu.be/0nJmxXJcrQQHow Caroline discovered the CIA's secret program to fund and shape American literary culture during the Cold War, including its involvement in the founding of the Paris Review, and why she saw a novel in it.The real-life women who inspired Louise: the aspiring writers and girlfriends surrounding the men at the center of the 1950s New York literary scene, and the female journalist who eventually broke the story decades later. The novel within a novel structure: why Louise's book had to be science fiction, how its chapters shift as Louise's disillusionment deepens, and the freedom of writing a melodramatic '50s romance as an "implied author" who isn't Caroline. The Hemingway interview at the heart of the book, based on Lillian Ross's real New Yorker profile, and how Hemingway, who is portrayed here as a kind of fairy godmother to Louise, inadvertently became Caroline's writing coach for the whole novel.Class tension in the 1950s literary world: why Louise's working-class origins matter in a scene dominated by Harvard and Yale men, and what that gave her as a character and as someone for readers to root for.How the title came about -- originally The Long Leash, the CIA's own term for the program -- and why her agent's suggestion of The Lunar Housewife did so much more work for the book.Writing The Lunar Housewife in spring 2020, during COVID lockdown, with a four-year-old and a one-year-old, writing after bedtime every night, and why that particular moment gave the lunar colony chapters their flavor. Why the 1950s is having a moment in historical fiction: the scrim of conformity and domestic bliss concealing postwar darkness, the seeds of the counterculture, and women who had tasted wartime freedom and had it yanked back. The common thread across Caroline's novels -- The Mesmerist, For All the Moons, and The Lunar Housewife -- women who question the status quo and push against systems, often in the face of government interference in private life.Caroline's advice to writers: write every single day (not just on Saturdays), and write what genuinely entertains you because if you're having fun, the reader will feel it.Reading from the opening pages of The Lunar Housewife: the launch party for Downtown magazine's second issue.Read more about Caroline Woods on her website: https://www.carolinewoodsauthor.com/Are you enjoying The Art In Fiction Podcast? Send us Fan MailMy guest today is Aimie K. Runyan, author of Mademoiselle Eiffel, listed in the Visual Arts category on Art In Fiction.View the video on YouTube: https://youtu.be/_JcFmRQ4PcQWhy Aimie chose to write about Claire Eiffel rather than her more famous father, and the surprising role Claire played in running Gustave's household, social life, and business from the age of 14.The wax figure of Claire at the top of the Eiffel Tower, alongside Gustave and Thomas Edison, and the historical meeting it commemorates. How clothing functions as armor and identity in the novel, particularly Claire's corset as a symbol of constraint reframed as protection in a world not built for ambitious women. The invisible female labor at the heart of the story, and what Claire sacrificed, including her art and her choice of husband, to secure her place at her father's side. The opposition to the Eiffel Tower from artists, architects, and Gustave's own friend Garnier, and what the contrast between the Opéra Garnier and the tower reveals about two competing visions of modernity.Aimie's research trips to Paris and the Musée d'Orsay archives, where the Eiffel family correspondence, party menus, and letters from admirers have been preserved since 1981.What Aimie gained by returning to the archives after the story was already written. The Panama Canal scandal, Gustave's complicated legacy, and why writing through Claire's adoring lens required Aimie to be deliberately even-handed with a man who was "no more of a villain than your average rich man used to getting his own way."The oldest daughter narrative and why Claire's story resonates today, including a frank conversation about the undervaluing of women's labor and the difference between "emotional labor" and plain old mental load.Aimie's advice to writers on research: travel if you can, use Google Earth if you can't, never hesitate to contact museum curators, and know that one good research trip can fuel three books.Reading from the scene in Portugal where 14-year-old Claire organizes a workers' dinner and earns her first public acknowledgment from her father.Read more about Aimie K. Send us Fan MailThis week on The Art In Fiction Podcast, I'm doing something a little different: a solo episode about my new novel, The Choir, listed in the Music category on Art In Fiction. View the video on YouTube: https://youtu.be/SHb4USfSeE0The family mystery at the heart of the novel: a great-great-grandmother who left her husband with six children in Victorian England and went on to have seven more children with another man, all documented on Ancestry.com.How a chance discovery about Victorian choral competitions and their cash prizes gave Eliza, the novel's protagonist, her escape route and the plot its engine. The role of Carol's mother, a lifelong learner who helped with research before she passed, and her grandmother Granny, who died at 98 and whose reluctance to "get above herself" shaped the novel's themes of class.Research trips to Quarry Bank Mill in Cheshire, where Carol heard the deafening looms firsthand, and to the Birmingham Back-to-Backs, the National Trust's preserved court of working-class Victorian housing. How choir membership was transformative for working-class women in the 1890s; in a world where women had no political voice and no authority at home, a choir gave them a voice that was literally heard.Ruth Henton, Eliza's childhood friend who escaped to the London stage and ends up performing Yum-Yum in Gilbert and Sullivan's The Mikado, and how her glamorous but precarious world eventually collides with Eliza's.The real historical figure Mary Wakefield, who launched the competitive music festival movement in England and makes a cameo in the novel. Why The Choir is Carol's most personal novel: her great-great-grandmother and great-grandmother both have roles, and the novel is her way of giving back the stories of working-class women whose lives rarely make it into the historical record.Reading from The Choir:Read more about Carol M. Dr. Brian Hill (Senior Pastor), "Lessons From James:  Patient Persistence", Parent Child Dedication, Choir, Blended Worship Praise Team (8:45 Service).       7.  Be patient, then, brothers and sisters, until the Lord's coming. See how the farmer waits for the land to yield its valuable crop, patiently waiting for the autumn and spring rains.  8.  You too, be patient and stand firm, because the Lord's coming is near.  9.  Don't grumble against one another, brothers and sisters, or you will be judged. The Judge is standing at the door!       10.  Brothers and sisters, as an example of patience in the face of suffering, take the prophets who spoke in the name of the Lord.  11.  As you know, we count as blessed those who have persevered. You have heard of Job's perseverance and have seen what the Lord finally brought about. The Lord is full of compassion and mercy.       (James 5:7-11 NIV)To view a video version of the Blended Worship Service please click on the following link:   https://youtu.be/BQCbjZYPEmA(The audio version of the Blended Worship Service will most likely have to be stopped from playing or else it will be heard as well as the audio track of the video version.)

Lila Forde: Finding Your Voice and Getting Out of the Way

The Bandwich Tapes

Play Episode Listen Later May 11, 2026 47:56

On this episode of The Bandwich Tapes, I sit down with singer and songwriter Lila Forde for a conversation that feels like it's unfolding mid-song, equal parts instinct, craft, and heart. I actually discovered Lila in the most “Bandwich” way possible: while preparing for my episode with Larry Goldings, I heard her voice in a video and immediately texted a few musician friends saying, “You need to hear this singer.” That moment led to this conversation.Lila shares how her collaboration with Larry Goldings has been developing, and the creative process behind it: record everything, follow the spark, and build outward from the accidental moments that feel alive. Hearing her describe that approach, trusting discovery instead of forcing results, made me even more excited about what they're creating together. We spend a lot of time talking about voice, not range or technique, but identity. Lila recalls a powerful moment from John Legend during her time on The Voice: "Don't try to out-sing anyone… just be Lila." That idea opens up a deeper conversation about influence versus imitation, the pressure to fit into genre boxes, and the constant temptation to chase whatever sound the internet is rewarding in the moment.Lila's musical roots run deep, from classical piano at home to years in the Seattle Girls Choir, and later jazz studies that reshaped how she hears harmony and melody. She explains how ear training and solfege still influence her songwriting today, and why understanding just a little bit of theory can unlock creative freedom for singers. We also talk honestly about the gig-life reality that many musicians know well: some of your biggest growth happens when nobody is paying attention. For Lila, that meant years of hotel-lobby gigs, four hours a night, five nights a week, where she learned to experiment, take risks, and build a durable musical voice. We close by talking about her debut album Vessel, recorded live with the band in just three days, and how she's stepping into a bigger creative leadership role as she works on her next record.Key TakeawaysAuthenticity defines artistic voice — the goal isn't to out-sing others, but to sound like yourself.Creative discovery often comes from accidents — capturing and following spontaneous musical moments can lead to powerful ideas.Influence is different from imitation — artists grow by absorbing influences while protecting their own identity.Musical training builds creative vocabulary — ear training, harmony, and theory can open doors for singers.Gig experience shapes real musicianship — long, quiet gigs often provide the space to experiment and grow.Recording live captures energy — tracking Vessel with the band in three days preserved the immediacy of the music.Leadership evolves with each project — Lila is stepping further into the creative driver's seat with her next record.Music from the EpisodeTemptation - Lila FordeAll I Expected - Lila FordeBrick by Brick - Lila FordeAbout the PodcastThe Bandwich Tapes is a podcast hosted by Brad Williams, featuring conversations with musicians, composers, producers, and creative thinkers about their musical journeys. Dr. Craig Christina (Associate Executive Director of the Baptist General Convention of Texas), "Dancing in the Storm", Orchestra, Choir, Blended Worship Praise Team (8:45 Service).       35. That day when evening came, he said to his disciples, “Let us go over to the other side.”  36.  Leaving the crowd behind, they took him along, just as he was, in the boat. There were also other boats with him.  37.  A furious squall came up, and the waves broke over the boat, so that it was nearly swamped.  38.  Jesus was in the stern, sleeping on a cushion. The disciples woke him and said to him, “Teacher, don't you care if we drown?”       39.  He got up, rebuked the wind and said to the waves, “Quiet! Be still!” Then the wind died down and it was completely calm.       40.  He said to his disciples, “Why are you so afraid? Do you still have no faith?”       41.  They were terrified and asked each other, “Who is this? Even the wind and the waves obey him!”       (Mark 4:35-41 NIV)

Music isn't just an activity; it's a powerful tool for connection, dignity, and redefining what's possible for people living with dementia. This has been proven by Second Verse Choir, a community choir created for people living with dementia and their care partners, and the subject of this week's episode. AgingIN CEO Susan Ryan sits down with Second Verse Co-Founders Anne Rigley and Kris Boggs to discuss their impetus for creating the choir and how it has grown from a small group of 13 into a thriving choir of 20 members who meet weekly and perform for the community. Anne's background in social work, combined with Kris' lifelong passion for music and advocacy, has culminated into a program that fosters joy, connection, and belonging. The two share how music supports cognitive engagement, strengthens social bonds, and challenges the stigma surrounding dementia and aging. From early inspiration to their first "magical" performance, they reflect on the meaningful impact the choir has had on participants and their families. The conversation also explores the practical side of launching a dementia-friendly choir, from logistics and partnerships to person-centered approaches that meet participants where they are. Looking ahead, Anne and Kris are focused on expanding the model and bringing the power of music to more communities. More information about Second Verse here: https://www.secondversechoir.org/

Rather than an earthly arrangement or a physical dwelling, true community is recognized as a living demonstration of love, collaboration, and shared purpose. It is a holy classroom where fixed beliefs about personal identity and isolation melt away through open dialogue, presence, and pure reflection. The gathering begins beautifully with the Choir of Angels, opening hearts and preparing the mind to receive the profound gifts of the Spirit. David, alongside presenters Urpi, Marina, and Jason, provides deep commentary on how relationships and dedicated collaboration become our swiftest means for healing.
