Join The Revd Canon Dr Alison Joyce, Rector of St Bride's, and St Bride's Choir for this week's reflection in words and music. This week's Gospel reading which we hear describes St Matthew's account of the transfiguration of Christ. "O nata lux de lumine" by Thomas Tallis is a simple yet beautifully refined setting of two verses from a hymn for the feast of the transfiguration. It was published in 1575 in a volume of motets by Tallis and Byrd called Cantiones Sacrae which they dedicated to Elizabeth I. Alison recalls a story she heard the comedian Billy Connolly tell and reflects on how we can all at times be unable to see the wonder of what confronts us until our eyes are opened and we finally see. We close with a nineteenth century hymn text on the same theme of Christ's glory, "God of mercy, God of grace, show the brightness of your face." Over twelve episodes, we're unpacking the mindset + strategy shifts shaping the future of fundraising, leadership, and doing good in 2026. Explore the series at weareforgood.com/12shiftsShift 11 / Story as InfrastructureIn today's episode, Jon and Becky welcome Carolina Garcia Jayaram, CEO of the Elevate Prize Foundation, for a reflective and forward-looking conversation on why story is no longer a communications tool — it's essential infrastructure for mission and culture. As attention fragments, trust erodes, and technology reshapes how people connect, Carolina invites nonprofit leaders to rethink storytelling as a relational practice rooted in humanity, proximity, and long-term investment. Together, they explore how centering people over issues, building trust-based relationships, and intentionally distributing stories can expand influence without sacrificing integrity.Carolina shares insights from Elevate's work at the intersection of philanthropy, media, and culture — from scaling visibility for proximate leaders to embracing AI in ways that deepen creativity rather than replace it. This episode is both a mindset shift and a practical invitation for leaders ready to treat story as something to protect, resource, and evolve from the inside out.Episode Highlights: People Over Issues: What Actually Moves Audiences to Action (03:45)Trust → Relationship-Based Philanthropy (05:10)Distribution as Strategy: Reaching Beyond the Choir (07:20)Owning Platforms & Visibility (YouTube, Creators, Times Square) (08:45)Case Study: Scaling Impact Through Story — Hannah Freed & Democracy Defenders (11:00)Scaffolding Stories: Why Nothing Should Be One-and-Done (14:50)Building Story Systems: Briefs, Libraries, and Iteration (16:30)Low-Fi Tools That Make High-Impact Stories Possible (18:40)Visibility = Fundraising: What the Data Shows (20:30)AI, Creativity & Neurodiversity: Scaling Without Losing Humanity (23:35)Carolina's One Good Thing (25:50)Episode Shownotes: www.weareforgood.com/episode/681Save your free seat at the We Are For Good Summit

Join The Revd Canon Dr Alison Joyce, Rector of St Bride's, and St Bride's Choir for this week's reflection in words and music. Our opening anthem – Everything holds together – is a song for the season of creation which was commissioned for St Bride's Choir by the Church of England's Environment Working Group. It is a setting composed by Ian Stephens of a poem by Malcolm Guite and is a timely reminder of our duty of stewardship to protect and enhance the environment in which we live. Alison reflects this week on how St Bride's observes a candle-lit hour of silence at the end of each working day which we call a Space for Silence – offering the gift of stillness and quiet calm in the heart of one of the busiest cities on Earth. We close with the hymn "For the beauty of the Earth" written by Folliott Pierpoint who was inspired to write the poem by the glorious view from a hilltop outside his home city of Bath in 1863. Rock and Roots Collide To Make a Joyful Noise: SUSTO Stringband and Holler Choir

It is interesting to compare and contrast the genres of rock and roll with old time and string band music. In some ways, string bands can be more raw and intense than rock bands. No bridges. Odd tunings. Dancing to exhaustion. Music made for intimate social gatherings versus music made for the wide world. The stereotypes of old time musicians being country bumpkins have not been entirely erased, however our guests in this episode are making music that reveals how deep and refreshing that wellspring of what was the first original music export of America can be in a new context. Taking the intricacy and edge of old time, string band music and marrying that with the punch and strut of indie rock, we arrive at a hybrid, a musical animal that sings a song seldom heard in the roots music world. As Justin Osborne pointed out, “It's just been so fun and really educational for me too, because I think coming from the indie rock world, I underestimated what it was going to require of me to be able to hang. And I just, it's one of those things you don't realize how much you don't know. But it's been really enjoyable lessons in humility for me and really fun to learn, and to continue to realize how much I don't know.” Justin, of the Austin-based indie rock band SUSTO may never sound the same again after teaming up with Appalachian acoustic troubadours Clint Robinson and Jackson Grimm of Holler Choir, and they are soon to return with Volume 2 from their project SUSTO Stringband. In this episode, we get to hear from Justin, Jackson and Clint about their rock and string band amalgamation, the importance of strong songwriting, the joys of live performance, the advantages of playing festival shows and more, with music from both SUSTO Stringband and Holler Choir along the way. SUSTO Stringband Songs heard in this episode:“Rooster” by SUSTO Stringband, from SUSTO Stringband Volume 1“Friends, Lovers, Ex-lovers: Whatever” by SUSTO Stringband, performed live at The Albino Skunk Music Festival 10/02/25, excerpt“Tell My Blues” by SUSTO Stringband, performed live at The Albino Skunk Music Festival 10/02/25, excerpt“Hamlet Blues” by Holler Choir, performed live at The Albino Skunk Music Festival 10/02/25Thank you for listening, and we hope you can spread awareness of this endeavor and help us reach more music fans just like yourself. Please take a moment and give us a top rating on your podcast platform of choice, and where you can, a review. It makes a big impact on the ranking and therefore the visibility of this series to all the other music fans who also follow podcasts. This is Southern Songs and Stories, where our quest is to explore and celebrate the unfolding history and culture of music rooted in the American South, and going beyond to the styles and artists that it inspired and informed. - Joe Kendrick

It's almost Family Day here in British Columbia, and to celebrate, we've got a tenuously connected episode theme! By request, we listen to "Christmas Must Be Tonight" as performed by SCALA and Kolacny Brothers, a song about the son of a carpenter. Then we pair it with "Let's Make a Baby King" by Wynnona Judd, a song about that same guy and also his mom and also his cousin, and also maybe the concept of an infant-based form of government. Dr. Brian Hill (Senior Pastor), "Lessons From James:  Live With Focus", Orchestra, Choir, Blended Worship Praise Team (8:45 Service).     19.  My dear brothers and sisters, take note of this: Everyone should be quick to listen, slow to speak and slow to become angry,  20.  because human anger does not produce the righteousness that God desires.  21.  Therefore, get rid of all moral filth and the evil that is so prevalent and humbly accept the word planted in you, which can save you.       22.  Do not merely listen to the word, and so deceive yourselves. Do what it says.  23.  Anyone who listens to the word but does not do what it says is like someone who looks at his face in a mirror  24.  and, after looking at himself, goes away and immediately forgets what he looks like.   25.  But whoever looks intently into the perfect law that gives freedom, and continues in it—not forgetting what they have heard, but doing it—they will be blessed in what they do.       (James 1:19-25 NIV)To view the video version of the Blended Worship Service please click on the following link:   https://youtu.be/r1OtMY2g7FI(The audio version of the Blended Worship Service will most likely have to be stopped from playing or else it will be heard as well as the audio track of the video version.)

Drawing from a recent multi-ensemble festival experience, he explores how thoughtfully curated choral gatherings can energize singers, expand audiences, strengthen inter-ensemble relationships, and provide invaluable promotional momentum for every participating organization. Today's Question addresses repertoire selection for folk, spiritual, and multicultural music, with a focused discussion on authenticity as the single most important criterion in choosing arrangements. Today's Inspiration features Moses Hogan's powerful spiritual "My God Is So High," performed by the William Baker Festival Singers.

Dr. Brian Hill (Senior Pastor), "Lessons From James:  God is Good", Orchestra, Choir, Blended Worship Praise Team (8:45 Service).         12.  Blessed is the one who perseveres under trial because, having stood the test, that person will receive the crown of life that the Lord has promised to those who love him.       13.  When tempted, no one should say, “God is tempting me.” For God cannot be tempted by evil, nor does he tempt anyone;  14.  but each person is tempted when they are dragged away by their own evil desire and enticed.  15.  Then, after desire has conceived, it gives birth to sin; and sin, when it is full-grown, gives birth to death.       16.  Don't be deceived, my dear brothers and sisters.  17.  Every good and perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of the heavenly lights, who does not change like shifting shadows.  18.  He chose to give us birth through the word of truth, that we might be a kind of firstfruits of all he created.       (James 1:12-18 NIV)To view the video version of the Blended Worship Service please click on the following link:    https://youtu.be/rL1QpdJ7r6M(The audio version of the Blended Worship Service will most likely have to be stopped from playing or else it will be heard as well as the audio track of the video version.)

“Politics taught me and prepared me for a world that is more political than politics.” Wayne County Commissioner (District 2) and 13th Congressional District Democratic Party Chair Jonathan Kinloch joins Detroit is Different for a Detroit-rooted, world-spanning conversation that starts at Second & Myrtle—“you know you're Detroit when you remember” it was once Myrtle, now MLK—and reaches back to South Carolina and New Jersey family migrations. Kinloch breaks down how elders like Erma Henderson wrapped their arms around a young volunteer, handing him the City Charter and saying, “I want you to read that and… explain it to me,” then sending him to police, planning, and historic commission meetings to learn how power really moves. From Northwestern's Motown pipeline—meeting Esther Gordy Edwards—to giving artists civic honors, Kinloch reveals the thread between culture and governance: legacy is built when we protect the block, the schools, and the ballot. He names Reagan-era disinvestment, party infrastructure fights, and why “this bipartisan thing is… bull crap” when working families need results. This episode ties past and future Black Detroit: migration, mentorship, music, and the mandate to organize precinct by precinct so our people steer what's next. "Every single workshop I give is all about excellence, singing well, singing properly, and achieving the very best we can achieve. Why do we it? We don't do it because we'll be paid millions and millions of pounds. It's not cash-motivated. We do it because there is a higher purpose, a higher calling that makes us do it. I got offered a graduate scheme at university, so I could have been a corporate sellout. I'd probably arguably work less hours than I do in music, but I didn't do that. I don't have any regrets, because on an evening, I go home, I look myself in the mirror, and I can say to myself, 'we did some good stuff today.'"Caius Lee began as a chorister at Bradford Cathedral at 11 and became the Cathedral Organ Scholar at 15. At age 17, he joined Leeds Cathedral, concurrently holding the Idlewild Conducting Scholarship and Cathedral Organ Scholarship, and was appointed Assistant Organist a year later, where he was the Diocesean Organist & Director of Music for the Lourdes annual pilgrimage and he studied Music as the Neville Burston Organ Scholar at St Catharine's College, University of Cambridge. While at the university, he founded the Florence International Singing Programme, which holds several courses yearly and has sung at prestigious churches, including Westminster Abbey, St Paul's Cathedral, Saint Sulpice, Florence Cathedral, and the Vatican. For the Addamus Choral Programme Caius Lee conducts the internationally acclaimed College Choir and Boys' Choir as well as The Jericho Youth Choir and the All Sorts Community Choir. He is also responsible for a wide range of collegiate, community, and outreach initiatives, curating Music at Worcester College at the University of Oxford, including The Oxford Choral Experience, a groundbreaking instrument learning scheme, and guest lecturer as part of Institute of Sacred Music run by the University, St Stephen's House, and The Royal School of Church Music. He has worked with choirs, festivals and played solo recitals in Europe, Asia and South America. Caius's musical journey is marked by numerous collaborations that have enriched his work and excited audiences. He has conducted, played, and sang on BBC Radio (1, 2, 3 & 4), and made numerous TV appearances on BBC's Songs of Praise, and live Christmas and Easter TV broadcasts on BBC1. His commitment to community engagement and choral excellence has been recognised with a Royal Society of Arts Fellowship and a keynote speech at the 2022 National Music Teachers Association Conference. To get in touch with Caius, you can find the Addamus Choral Programme on Facebook (@addamuschoralprogramme) or Instagram (@addamus_official) or email him at caius.lee@worc.ox.ac.uk. Email choirfampodcast@gmail.com to contact our hosts.Podcast music from Podcast.coPhoto in episode artwork by Trace Hudson

[4:05] Venus conjoins Mars (Jan. 7, 6:43 pm PST) at 18º09' Capricorn. The Sabian symbol for this conjunction is 19 Capricorn, A child of about five carrying a huge shopping bag. Motivation will be high to pursue the things that you want and enjoy. [6:54] Sun conjoins Mars (Jan. 9, 3:41 am PST) at 19º12' Capricorn, on the Sabian symbol, 20 Capricorn, A hidden choir singing. The Sun, Venus, and Mars are together at 19º Capricorn and opposed Jupiter in Cancer. This Mars cazimi day is ideal for sharing something you've been working on with the world. [9:03] Venus opposes Jupiter (Jan. 9, 9:35 am PST) at 20º11' Capricorn-Cancer. This transit can indicate a tendency to overdo it, to spend more money than you need to on things that don't necessarily satisfy you. Give some thought to what could make your relationships happier. [10:46] On Jan. 10, the Sun and Mars in Capricorn oppose Jupiter within about six hours of each other. The Sun opposes Jupiter at 12:42 am PST, and Mars opposes Jupiter at 6:25 am PST. Avoid negative solar tendencies, such as boasting, bragging, and demanding the spotlight. Temper Mars tendencies such as insisting on having your own way. On the flipside, your hard work could be acknowledged. [12:06] Moon Report! The Libra Last Quarter Moon (Jan. 10, 7:48 am PST) is at 20º24' Libra-Capricorn. This Last Quarter Moon is the last major phase in the New Moon cycle that began with the Sagittarius New Moon (Dec. 19, 2025). Seek resolution to the conflict between collaboration and individual ambition. Sabian symbols: 21 Libra, A crowd upon the beach (Moon) and 21 Capricorn, A relay race (Sun). [15:09] Lunar Phase Family Cycle (LPFC). This is the Last Quarter in an LPFC that began with a Solar Eclipse New Moon on Oct. 14, 2023, at 21º07' Libra. The First Quarter of this LPFC was on July 13, 2024. The Full Moon in this LPFC was on April 12, 2025, at 23º19' minutes Libra. [17:05] The Moon in Leo squares Uranus in Taurus (Jan. 6, 5:05 am PST). It is VOC for 3 hours, 52 minutes, then enters Virgo (8:57 am PST). Use this VOC Moon period to get in the habit of stretching your creative muscles. [18:34] The Moon opposes Neptune in Virgo-Pisces (Jan. 8, 3:23 pm PST). It's VOC for 43 minutes, then enters Libra (4:06 pm PST). Use this VOC Moon period to get in the habit of appreciating the artistic and non-conformist people in your life, without feeling like you need to change them. [20:06] The Moon squares Venus in Libra-Capricorn (Jan. 10, 9:54 am PST). It's VOC for 17 hours, 1 minute, then enters Scorpio (Jan. 11, 2:55 am PST). On this episode of Preaching to the Choir, I challenge a comfortable lie too many men believe: that saying you'd die for your family somehow equals leadership.Words are easy. Declarations are cheap. Virtue signaling costs nothing.Living for your family is where the real work begins. Consistency. Discipline. Showing up in the mundane and the boring, day after day, when no one is watching. That's how trust is built. That's how families are strengthened. That's how legacy is earned. We live in a culture obsessed with talk and performance, yet allergic to responsibility and follow-through. This episode is a reminder that leadership isn't found in dramatic sacrifice, but in quiet obedience, daily effort, and long-term commitment.Stop talking about who you'd die for. Start proving who you're willing to live for.CarniVault Freeze Dried Meats-Use "MG10" to save!https://carnivault.comUse MG20 to save 20% at Wasatch Wagyuhttps://wasatchwagyu.comUse Code "MGS15" for %15 OFF on your first order!https://firecracker.farm/Join my patreonhttps://patreon.com/mikeglover
