I met Alec in... Jesus, 2001? Ironically, we met partially in the context of me grieving a friend who had passed. We met again through music. He had started a record label in order to put out the music by a new band from Ohio called The National. I was managing Baby Dayliner, who wound up on Brassland. But our way into the conversation today is Mark Lanegan. When Lanegan's memoir 'Sing Backwards and Weep' published, Alec read it and plunged into Lanegan's music during the pandemic. We cover a lot here but honestly, you need to listen to this podcast because Alec is such an earnest fan of music, even after working in the industry for more than 20 years. Being a fan is deeply cool. Remaining a fan is even cooler.   Alec Hanley Bemis is a writer, producer & curator of creative projects, primarily in music. In 2001, he co-founded the Brassland label with Aaron and Bryce Dessner of The National. For that work, he has been covered by The Irish Times, The Guardian, Print Magazine, and The Wall Street Journal. In his first career as a writer & journalist, he was published in The New Yorker, The New York Times, Bookforum and LA Weekly on topics ranging from Beck to backyard wrestling. Once a month or so he posts algorithm-free music playlists to his mixtape delivery service AHB's Goodies: http://alechanleybemis.substack.com Learn more at http://brassland.org and http://alechanleybemis.com

The name of songwriter/multi-instrumentalist Rafael Cohen’s latest project is Las Palabras. Las Palabras’ self-titled Brassland debut finds him singing in Spanish for the first time and was inspired by post-tropicália Brazilian pop music. Rafael was previously in the Dischord band El Guapo and is a core member of !!!, who are working on their ninth album. Las Palabras is the plural-named solo project of Rafael Cohen, of the dance-punk band !!! (pronounced chk chk chk). Cohen, a Brooklyn-based musician by way of Washington DC (his band El Guapo was on Dischord Records), studied with Anthony Braxton in school, and lived in Mexico City until he was 10. In Las Palabras, (a Spanish phrase for “The Words”), he taps into his earliest musical memories of Guatemalan marimbas, Peruvian waltzes, Brazilian bossa nova, salsa, and reconciles these sonics with the musician he has become (Cohen’s statement, Brassland.org). He plays some of these charming and whimsical songs in his native language, remotely for the podcast. Set list: "Condesa," "Juan Pared," "Pescador" "Condesa": "Juan Pared" "Pescador" Web Extra: "Cayendo"

The Third Story Podcast with Leo Sidran

Alec Hanley Bemis, writer and manager of cultural projects, co-founded the Brassland record label in 2001 along with his friends Aaron and Bryce Dessner of the band The National. Over the years, the label has become home to a community of like minded creative musicians who defy category. Last month Alec published a piece in Creative Independent called 19 things I’d tell people contemplating starting a record label (after running one for 19 years). Here we discuss what happened in between.  Although this conversation was recorded in the before times of 2019, listening back I am struck by a few particularly interesting ideas that emerge in the talk: the distinction between culture and subculture; that we are now in an era of “constant content”; the shift over time from the taste maker as an institution to the taste maker as an individual personality; and what he describes as “the economy of cool”. www.third-story.com www.patreon.com/thirdstorypodcast www.brassland.org

Knowing how a piece of classical music came to be is often a bit of a guessing game. What inspired Bach to write the Goldberg Variations, or Beethoven to write his 9th Symphony? Context clues, letters, composers’ notes help us put the story together; we fill in the rest with our imaginations and mythology. But no more! In this episode of Classical Classroom, you’ll hear the entire story of a piece of modern classical music, Music for Wood and Strings, from commission to performance. Even the instruments on which the piece is played didn’t exist before this story began. You’ll meet composer Bryce Dessner (The National), instrument maker Aron Sanchez (Buke and Gase), and the members of So Percussion. You’ll hear a lot of awesome music. You’ll laugh! You’ll cry. Your life will be affirmed. But seriously, it’s a compelling (and thoroughly American) story about ingenuity, modernist music, and most importantly, joy.          Music in this episode: Music for Wood and Strings. Bryce Dessner.
