POPULARITY
I sure hope this one doesn't ruffle too many feathers. It's an honest and mostly appreciative, thoughtful appraisal of a highly regarded album that has aged remarkably well. Ken Smallwood is in the co-pilot seat this time and really brings his "A" game to the endeavor. Listen in as two very old friends talk well into the night about this recording.
Damian Kulash of OK Go discusses his evolution from punk music fan, working with Dischord records, and creating boundary-pushing music, vinyl packaging and viral videos Topics Include: New album "And The Adjacent Possible" available for streaming now. Discussion about physical media's role in OK Go's output. OK Go primarily known for videos that "live in the ether." Damian was into physical record packaging during college years. First record was Herbie Hancock's "Rockit," bought at Tower Records. Young Damian damaged the record trying to scratch like DJ. Later played with Herbie Hancock at Obama's 50th birthday party. Musical journey from hip-hop through Prince, Beatles, Led Zeppelin. DC punk scene was influential, with bands playing in cafeterias. Started Level Records at age 15,with funding from Dischord Records. Ian MacKaye lent teenager Damian money to start label. Level Records produced 7-inches and compilation CDs for friends' bands. College made running a record label difficult for Damian. Studied art semiotics at Brown University. Worked as NPR radio engineer and Photoshop retoucher after college. Indifferent to Napster's rise during OK Go's early days. Band finances operated like "roadrunner off the cliff" cartoon. Discussion about gift economy model working for the band. Belief that making things you love matters most, not success. Music sometimes gets overshadowed by video's visual impact. Videos gave OK Go longevity beyond typical radio-hit bands. New album theme explores Stuart Kaufman's "adjacent possible" concept. OK Go doesn't have unified sound; band is "like a mixtape." Treadmill video was originally made for "nerdiest fans" only. Videos aim to create real events that connect with viewers. Physical pressings of OK Go albums are costly in secondary market. New vinyl features elaborate pop-up sphere in custom packaging. Hidden track on second album deliberately blocked copy-protection software. Record label "Paracadute" means parachute in Italian. Ten-year album gap wasn't intentional; life and pandemic happened. Directed "The Beanie Bubble" film with his wife for Apple. Film directing different from making music videos; less adrenaline-driven. Video production typically takes 3-6 months from concept to completion. Some video ideas abandoned when technology made them commonplace. Cret Wilson (bass, vocals) and Areif Sless-Kitain (drums) are two-thirds of DC based 90's post punk band, Regulator Watts. Anddddddddddddd, we're back! Sorry for the unplanned "hiatus", but now the show is back with a vengeance. This is the second Patron-chosen topic episode. The indomitable story of DC legends Kingface. In the copilot chair this one was my old friend Ken Smallwood. It was a great pleasure getting to hear stories of old Dischord house days, the Slinkees, Sevens and of course the origin story of Kingface, from Mark Sullivan. Please do yourselves a favor and revisit this essential band! Apparently they're even gigging again.
Today on the podcast we welcome Amanda MacKaye. Amanda and I chat about the new Bed Maker record that's out on Dischord, a big discussion about genre, emo, and her take on it from the world she came from in DC. We talk about the industry as a whole and what's exciting for Amanda in 2024. This was a really great conversation and I kept a lot of the back and forth in more than usual to keep that feeling for you the listener. https://linktr.ee/bedmakerdc https://www.patreon.com/washedupemo Learn more about your ad choices. It's always a pleasure to have the opportunity to talk about and to a band that deserved so much more acclaim than they received in their time active. Rain Like The Sound Of Trains is the perfect case in point. They were such a powerful and heartfelt group of individuals playing revolutionary music together, while also living together and attempting to live out their beliefs. This episode Scott Sheridan and I sketch out what this band meant to us and why they were so important. Later in the show I talk with singer Bobby Sullivan, guitarist/vocalist Pete Chramiec and bass slayer Dug Bird. It's a true honor to share this episode with you.

Yes, we've already spoke about all these tracks in a couple of the earliest episodes, but this carries a differnt release number, so we get to do it all over again. Thank God it's some of the most inspiring and trail-blazing music the label has out out then! This time Ken Smallwood is my copilot and late in the show Ivor Hanson (drummer in the Faith) fills in lots of details about the Faith and those early Dischord years. Needless to say, I'm extremely proud of this episode.

We have an all new summer fun filled episode and we're kicking things off in DC with Brian Lowit. You may know him from his legendary indie label, Lovitt Records. He's also the label manager over at Dischord and one of the owners of Mount Desert Island Ice Cream in DC. We talked about how we started his own label, some of the different shows we've been at together throughout the years, and what it means to make an ice cream shop your new clubhouse. Then we head over to Iceland for the first time ever in Snacky Tunes history where we sit down with Paddan, who talk about their new EP, Fluid Time, which is out on Lovitt Records. We talk about their times in the early punk scene of Iceland, their long creative journey together, and what they like to put on the kettle when they're in the studio. As summer rolls on, please consider supporting HRN. On TNT this month, we're back with our friends at Dischord Records! Thanh + Tim dig into a record and a band that bring a little bit of youth and groove to the label: Q and Not U's debut album, “No KIll No Beep Beep,” released in October 2000. On the bands's debut and their roots in the Washington D.C. music scene, Pitchfork noted that "few bands sound like this, and even fewer towns sound like this."
On episode 83 of the Miserable Failure Podcast, Chuck Ragan from Hot Water Music called me to chat about the 30th anniversary tour as well as the bands newest album VOWS. We delve into the highs and lows of their extensive touring experiences, Life outside the band, his family and of course fishing! We also go into detail about HMW's visit to the Dischord house and meeting Ian and Amanda MacKeye in DC. All that so much much more! Hosted by Michael Crusty
This first Rain Like The Sound Of Trains 7" really made an impact when it first came out. It was a supergroup of sorts and caused some unlikely controversy in the punk scene. The message and sound of this group has aged incredibly well. Jeff Kaplan is bank in the copilot chair to discuss the record and the band's legacy. Then we're joined by Pete Chramiec, Joshua Larue and Dug Birdzell for a conversation about the origins of the band, recording this 7" and much more.
Yet another unslanted opinion on yet another new band for Dischord this episode. Slant 6's introductory release, What Kind Of Monster. Greg Polard (Where It Went, Somthin' To Du) joins me for a look under the hood of this machine. Combustion ensues.
This show we drop the needle on Holy Rollers mach two, specifically the "Watching The Grass Grow/ Toy" 7". In the copilot seat today is the prolific and illustrious Greg Polard (Where It Went and Somethin' To Du podcasts). Later in the episode we are joined by guitarist/singer Marc Lambiotte and bassist Chris Bopst! Come and knock on our door...
To conclude our Scream streak, longtime cohost Jeff Kaplan returns for a chat about their first non-Dischord album, No More Censorship. This episode is the first Patron-selected episode. Every five shows, we will do a special Patron's Choice episode (and no, it doesn't need to be a Dischord or DC band). It was pure kismet that one of the very first suggestions was actually this record! And I'm pretty proud of the conversation I had with the band's secret weapon on guitar (and one of the nicest guys you're likely to come across), Franz Stahl. Hit me!
As we near the end of our run of Scream releases, Scott Sheridan and I talk about the stand-alone Fumble album. Was it ahead omits time? Dated? Another classic or a misstep? Listen and find out.
Continuing our Scream month with the CD compilation of Banging The Drum and Fumble. This episode I'm joined by the illustrious Ben Merlis and growling Greg Polard to geek out on the Scream team and also discuss the debatable merits of their last album before 2023.
There is a grungy, punky, garage-y feeling on the January 2024 New Music train today, as Vasant Ramamurthy and Patrick are at the helm. Greg Polard joins me this episode to discuss the first Scream CD, chock full of over 30 tracks! The conversation was infinitely fun and insightful. Listen in as we talk about why this is an all time classic and why it's important that Scream are Still Screaming to this day.
Well, as a wise man once said, another one bites the dust...This was a unique addition to the catalog, in that it's probably the first and last documentary film on Dischord. Ben Merlis took the copilot chair for this wild ride. We laughed, we cried, we scratched our heads in confusion (and much more)! Enjoy
On this week's Talkhouse Podcast, we've got two guys whose work I've admired for decades, but who I never realized were as close as they are personally: David Wain and Craig Wedren. Wain is a writer-director-actor (and more) who first came to fame with the hilarious sketch-comedy group The State, whose mid-'90s MTV show was and is a cult sensation—and still holds up to this day. Proof of that: The State has been doing reunion shows recently, and today's podcast was inspired by the fact that I saw today's other guest, Craig Wedren, in the audience for their recent Chicago show. After The State, Wain went on to direct a bunch of hilarious movies, including Wet Hot American Summer, Wanderlust and Role Models. He's also done lots of acting, and way more stuff than I can list here in a reasonable amount of time. On top of that, he started the just-for-fun, cheekily named Middle Aged Dad Jam Band, whose core also includes State alumnus Ken Marino and lots of big special guests. The Jam band will be playing at SF Sketchfest, which starts today, with tons of other great acts, including… The State. Craig Wedren started his career as the singer of Shudder to Think, the DC-based band of art-rockers whose early records came out on Dischord. After that band split up—which had something to do with Wedren being diagnosed with a pretty serious cancer in his mid-20s—he switched his focus to scoring and soundtrack work, at which he has undoubtedly succeeded. He's made music for tons of TV and film, including many of Wain's projects. He's also made some fantastic solo albums, including one that's due for release next week called The Dream Dreaming. It's maybe the most accessible thing he's ever done, but as Wain points out in this conversation, accessible music by Craig Wedren is still beautifully odd. Check out “Play Innocent” from The Dream Dreaming. As a huge fan of both Shudder to Think and The State, I'm surprised I didn't realize that Wain and Wedren weren't just professional collaborators, but literally life-long friends. They've known each other since they were about 4, and they started making creative things together not long after that—they get into that history here. In this conversation, they talk about their history together, what they're doing now, the ups and downs of doing it yourself, bath-time tips, and Wedren's health issues over the years, including one that just happened. It's a great chat. Enjoy. Thanks for listening to the Talkhouse Podcast, and thanks to David Wain and Craig Wedren for chatting. If you liked what you heard, please follow Talkhouse on your favorite podcasting service, and check out all the goodness at Talkhouse.com. This episode was produced by Myron Kaplan, and the Talkhouse theme is composed and performed by the Range. See you next time!
This episode is about the Dischord half-release that brings a new band into the fold, Hoover. They were innovators and harbingers of much to come for the sonics of the 90s punk scene. Does this episode or my conversation with guitarist/vocalist, Joe McRedmond (absolutely the nicest guy I've interviewed this year), change my old bias against the band? Listen and find out. I even had to call in a favor to get old cohost, Jeff Kaplan, to take the sidecar on the episode. Check it!

As you'll most likely hear, it can be hard to find words to express all the nuance and depth of meaning a favorite piece of art elicits in you. This is a perfect case in point. This album has soundtracked many years of my life, and continues to do so. With that caveat, I hope you enjoy this conversation. I always know it'll be a good episode when Scott Sheridan is in the copilot chair, but this episode we get Scott squared. Not only Sheridan, but Hicks (who folks might know from his bands Totally Slow and Rights Reserved). Scott Hicks is a friend who can always crack me up and then turn around and touch me with a well placed insight. This was a fun one. Enjoy!

J. Robbins is likely a household name for any true music fan. Joe Hall should be right up there with him. Since 2006 his band Hammer No More the Fingers has been putting out rock with more hooks than a bait and tackle shop. They are celebrating the release of their third LP, "Silver Zebra", THIS friday via Defend Vinyl Records, and will be throwing some release parties early november WITH J. Robbins and his incredible band. It is in your best interests to listen to ALL of Hammer No More the Fingers's music, wherever you do that these days, as they have not had a miss in their catalogue so far; AND much of that has to do with their 15-year, working relationship with J. Robbins! So this is a fascinating conversation for anyone in a band that wants to get an in depth look into the journey behind some of music's best offerings ever. Get all things Hammer No More the Fingers at their Bandcamp Page and tickets do their release shows at Rubies here. Keep on the up and up with J. This episode was a lot of fun. Two bands, two songs called Static and three interviews! Ben Merlis makes a triumphant return to the cohost hotseat and we chop it up about so many things on the way to the matter at hand. J Robbins (Jawbox) returns once again, John Mohr (Tar) goes deep on the history and Mike Gitter (xXx Fanzine) takes us home with talk of his signing Jawbox to a major label, and basically what happened right after this 7", along with his abiding love for the band.
Franz Stahl, guitarist of seminal hardcore band Scream, helped shape the band's journey from its inception in 1979. Alongside drummer Kent Stacks(AKA Kent Stax), bassist Skeeter Enoch Thompson, and his brother Pete Stahl, Franz attended school in Bailey's Crossroads, Virginia, where they discovered the punk and new wave scene of Washington, D.C. Influenced by the Bad Brains like many other DC punk bands, Scream's fusion of punk with rock and roll set them apart. Their collaboration with Ian MacKaye and Eddie Janney led to the recording of Dischord's first full-length album, Still Screaming, in 1982. Over the years, they experienced lineup changes, with Franz's friend Harley Davidson joining on second guitar, and eventually, a local drummer named Dave Grohl. Scream's legacy endures, with their latest album, DC Special, set to release in November of 2023 on Dischord Records.
On this episode my old cohost, Jeff Kaplan, dusts off his microphone and we sink our teeth into the masterful last original material Jawbox would release on Dischord. Later in the show J Robbins drops by the EOE studio to talk about the tracks and J (G) Ballard.

It was a real pleasure to have one of my oldest friends, Ken Smallwood, on as copilot for the episode. There is definitely a little good cop/bad cop energy going on with us around this release. Guess who is who! Not many folks are aware of this band, so it was a fascinating one to cover. Kathleen Hanna, Sharon Cheslow and Dug E Bird!
The draft is back and this time we used Dischord records as the poolfor our picks. Dischord is perhaps the most well known DIY label inthe world and it has had many great releases. We went draft style andpicked our favorite full lengths from the label. There was a littletwist thrown in. None of the bands could contain members or MinorThreat . So no Minor Threat, Dag Nasty, Fugazi etc . So thatsignificantly reduced what many would pick in a normal draft includingpeople from those bands. It was fun and interesting and harder thanyou think (for us anyway) . Enjoy!
This episode marks the last Shudder To Think release on Dischord, and to mark the occasion, we've got the entire band (mach two) on the show talking about this 7' and their move from Dischord to a major label (Epic). Joining me for the record talk this week is Scott Sheridan and Ben Merlis.
Wow, the first Dischord-approved picture disc. Adventurous? Disastrous? No big deal? Regardless, both Circus Lupus and Trenchmouth bring strong material to the project. Hear Scott and I unwrap this sonic candy (and try to stop staring at the magazine poster-style shot of CL). Towards the end of the show, Chris Thomson and Seth Lorinczi drop by to recall why they chose the cover song for the release and their memories of the project. Enjoy!
Charles Steck - Rest in Inspiration
This world is a strange place to say the least. On this episode Greg Polard (Where It Went, Something To Du) and I rap rhapsodic about the track This World. After that, we present part two of my conversation with Joe Lally (Fugazi, Messthetics). Lots of mystery and magic to be had for all!
Joan Jett plus Circus Lupus equals magic! Who knew? Join Brian and Scott as they rhapsodize about the greatness of this strange 7'. Later in then show singer Chris Thomson and bassist Seth Lorinczi join us for a wild ride of a conversation about meeting Joan, playing crazy shows and the recording and reception of the Pop Man record. What else are you gonna do with the next three hours of your life?
