In the second part of this deep dive Hear the Dance discussion of Jerome Robbins' The Goldberg Variations, host Silas Farley is joined by former NYCB Dancers and current Repertory Directors Christine Redpath and Jean-Pierre Frohlich. Redpath, an original cast member of Goldberg, digs into Robbins' approach to the creation of this remarkably multi-faceted ballet, while Frohlich remembers the adjustments the choreographer made through the ensuing performances. Both talk about coaching Goldberg on today's company members and the ways in which the work has influenced the dancemakers of today. In a special two-part Hear the Dance Episode, host Silas Farley leads us on a wide-ranging discussion of Jerome Robbins' 1971 ballet The Goldberg Variations. In this first part, Farley is joined by former NYCB Dancer Bruce Wells, an original cast member, and current Principal Dancer Emilie Gerrity, one of the ballet's present-day interpreters. Wells shares the challenges Robbins faced after an injury forced him to choreograph from a wheelchair, as well as highlights from the year-long creative process. Gerrity describes the "class" section of this monumental ballet as "simple but beautiful," and recalls learning the work from original dancer Christine Redpath, among other memorable coaches. Grandpa Bill Asks: listeners, picture this: We're standing with Dr. Metivier inside the early structure of his physical Memory Palace in Australia. Sunlight streams through the unglazed windows, illuminating the concrete floor where the A-to-Z memory wheel will soon be. In the center of this space, Dr. Metivier stands with his real bass guitar. Now, let's use the Major System to create a memorable scene of him playing multiple Bach works, associating each number with a specific action or element related to a piece.0 - S/Z/Soft C: Imagine Dr. Metivier zipping up a black leather jacket as he prepares to play the opening of Bach's Toccata and Fugue in D minor (often adapted for bass). The 'zipping' sound and the dramatic nature of the piece connect to the 'S' sound of zero.1 - T/Th: He then begins the famous Air on the G String from Orchestral Suite No. 3. Imagine him gently tapping his foot in time with the melody. The 'T' sound links to the number one and the flowing, gentle nature of the piece.2 - N: Next, he transitions to a lively section from one of the Brandenburg Concertos. Visualize a flock of gnats buzzing around his head as he plays a particularly intricate and fast passage, representing the quick, busy nature of the music. The 'N' sound connects to the number two.3 - M: For the powerful Passacaglia and Fugue in C minor, imagine a giant ham swinging rhythmically in front of him as he plays the deep, grounding bass line of the Passacaglia. The 'M' sound links to three, and the weighty image reflects the music's gravitas.4 - R: As he moves to a movement from one of the Cello Suites, picture a rower in a small boat gently rocking back and forth in time with the bowing motions his right hand makes on the bass strings. The 'R' sound connects to four and evokes the smooth, flowing quality of the cello.5 - L: Imagine a bright light suddenly illuminating the fretboard as he plays a particularly beautiful and soaring melodic line from the Mass in B minor (again, a bass adaptation). The 'L' sound connects to five and emphasizes the radiant quality of the music.6 - J/Sh/Ch/Soft G: For an adaptation of one of the English Suites, see him suddenly wearing a chef's hat and playfully conducting with his head while he plays a more dance-like and rhythmic section. The 'Ch' sound connects to six and adds a whimsical element.8 - F/V: As he plays a section from the Goldberg Variations (arranged for bass), imagine fluffy white foam suddenly erupting from the sound holes in his bass, bubbling and dissipating with the intricate variations. The 'F' sound connects to eight and provides a visual texture to the complex music.9 - P/B: Finally, for a powerful cadence, imagine a large purple balloon inflating and then gently deflating in time with the final, resonant notes of a Bach Chorale. The 'P/B' sounds connect to nine and provide a strong visual conclusion. So, there you have it, Dr. Metivier in his future Memory Palace, playing a medley of Bach, with each piece and a corresponding Major System number brought to life through a vivid mnemonic image. This is the power of the Magnetic Memory Method in action, connecting sound, image, and location in a truly unforgettable way. Dr. Metivier will be on my Podcast on 8/12/25 WE will discuss his thoughts on this at that time stay tuned!#BachOnBass,#MajorSystem,#MnemonicMusic,#PhysicalMemoryPalace,#Dr.AnthonyMetivier#MagneticMemoryMethod,#Bach,#MemoryPalace,#GrandpaBill,#BHSalesKennelKelpHolisticHealingHour,Join us at The BH Sales Kennel Kelp Holistic Healing Hour Podcast Daily and YouTube @billholt8792

This episode is a deviation from our normal programming. It is an eulogy - an end of life dedication of sorts - to a few loved ones that have passed away recently. I wrote this account to honor them; Robert O'Neill, Philip Waln, and Larry Reedy. Though there are no really scary parts to this episode, as it is almost entirely non-fiction, there are some disturbing subjects. TW: addiction and real-life death. If you are okay with these subjects being briefly discussed, I hope that you proceed with the episode as it was written to honor and praise those that have left our world - people who were very dear to me in life. Please enjoy. This story was written by Phillip Clark. It was directed, engineered, and edited by Phillip Clark. There's a moment in Mel Brooks' “History of the World Part 1” where we're told that shortly after the first artists came the first art critics…..I'll leave you to determine what happens…. The music world is certainly not short of people with opinions in regards to others' ability to perform and provide nuance to the work they present for us as music lovers to listen to. In the classical world, interpretation of the canon of baroque, classical, romantic and modernist music can be a mystery to some of us who are not classically trained musicians. There's no shortage of classical soloists who've captured the wider public's imagination, yet have their critics as well. Welcome to episode 128 of See Hear Podcast. Glenn Gould is regarded as one of the great pianists of the 20th century, known in particular for his love of and heavy focus on the composition of J.S. Bach. However, he wasn't unanimously revered. Pianist Alfred Brendel was vocally not a fan. Even Leonard Bernstein who did love Gould's approach covered himself before a TV broadcast of a Brahms piano concerto by saying Gould's approach was not going to be for everybody. Therein lies the heart of the matter – when you depart from an accepted orthodox style of playing of the canon, you're going to upset people. Glenn Gould upset some people. BUT….the reason he is still being talked about was for what he DID, not what he didn't do. He's most famous for his first and last released recordings, Bach's Goldberg Variations (1955 and 1981). Even there his recordings are wildly different, and the latter upset some who championed the earlier recording. He's also remembered for his intellect and could discuss may other issues outside of music – something he did on radio and TV specials. In 1993, film director Francois Girard released a brilliant biopic / documentary called “Thirty Two Short Films About Glenn Gould”. Like its subject, the film takes a wildly different approach from the accepted norm of musician biopic. As the name implies, the film comprises of 32 shorts featuring narratives, interviews, performance and experimentation that provide a strong sense of Gould's character. There is a 3 act structure, but not in the usual way that you get in a conventional musician biography. June 2025 sees the reissue of the film by Criterion, and I was thrilled to welcome Francois to the podcast to talk about this film and Gould in general. Unfortunately, we couldn't coordinate the timing to have Tim or Kerry available, but I still had a fascinating conversation with Francois that I hope you find illuminating. This Day in Legal History: Atkins v. VirginiaOn June 20, 2002, the U.S. Supreme Court delivered a landmark ruling in Atkins v. Virginia, holding that the execution of individuals with intellectual disabilities violates the Eighth Amendment's prohibition on cruel and unusual punishment. The case centered on Daryl Renard Atkins, who was convicted of abduction, armed robbery, and capital murder in Virginia. During the penalty phase of his trial, defense attorneys presented evidence that Atkins had an IQ of 59 and functioned at the level of a child. Despite this, he was sentenced to death. In a 6-3 decision, the Court reversed its earlier stance from Penry v. Lynaugh (1989), which had allowed such executions. Justice John Paul Stevens, writing for the majority, emphasized the "evolving standards of decency" in American society, noting that a growing number of states had barred the death penalty for individuals with intellectual disabilities. The Court recognized that such defendants are at a heightened risk of wrongful execution due to difficulties in assisting their own defense and the possibility of false confessions. The decision did not establish a national standard for determining intellectual disability, leaving that to the states, but it set a constitutional floor by barring executions in these cases outright. Atkins significantly reshaped the legal landscape of capital punishment, prompting states to revise death penalty statutes and sentencing procedures. The ruling reinforced the importance of individualized sentencing and safeguarded vulnerable populations from the most severe penalties. It also underscored the role of psychological and scientific evidence in constitutional interpretation. While not without criticism, Atkins remains a cornerstone of Eighth Amendment jurisprudence and a key moment in the Court's ongoing reevaluation of capital punishment.Technology giants Apple and Meta are currently facing possible penalties under the EU's Digital Markets Act (DMA), but the European Commission has decided not to immediately fine them—even if they don't fully comply by the deadline next week.In April, both companies were fined—€500 million for Apple and €200 million for Meta—and given 60 days (ending 26 June) to align their practices with DMA requirements. Apple was penalized for preventing app developers from directing users to alternatives outside its platform, infringing DMA fairness rules. Meta was fined for its “pay or consent” system, which required users to either pay for an ad-free experience or agree to extensive personal data use; the Commission saw this as limiting user choice.Since November 2024, Meta has offered a new, lower-data personalized advertising model, which remains under Commission review. The current situation involves ongoing dialogue: any future fines will depend on the outcome of that review and will be imposed only after detailed assessments, rather than automatically once the deadline passed. These April fines were deliberately modest—reflecting the short duration of non-compliance and signaling the EU's priority on achieving compliance over punishment, marking a softer approach compared to previous, harsher antitrust actions. The situation also plays into broader economic tensions: EU leaders have threatened digital advertising taxes in response to recent US tariffs, while a US trade report criticized EU digital regulation as a trade barrier.Tech giants Apple and Meta to escape sanctions for failing to meet EU digital rules | EuronewsA U.S. appeals court has temporarily allowed Donald Trump to retain control over California's National Guard, despite a legal challenge from California Governor Gavin Newsom. The decision from the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals pauses an earlier ruling by Judge Charles Breyer, who found Trump had unlawfully federalized the Guard without meeting statutory requirements or adequately coordinating with Newsom. The court stated Trump likely acted within his authority and that even if coordination with the governor was insufficient, Newsom lacked the power to override a presidential order. Still, the court left open the possibility of further challenges under laws barring federal troops from engaging in domestic law enforcement. Newsom plans to pursue his challenge, arguing Trump is misusing military force against civilians. The case stems from Trump's deployment of 4,000 National Guard troops and 700 U.S. Marines to Los Angeles earlier in June to suppress protests tied to his immigration policies—actions Newsom said infringed on state sovereignty and legal limits on military involvement in civilian matters. The Trump administration argued troops are protecting federal property, not performing law enforcement.During a hearing, the appellate judges examined whether courts can assess a president's decision to federalize troops under a law allowing such moves only during invasion, rebellion, or when civilian enforcement fails. The court found the last condition may have applied, given protest-related violence. However, it rejected the Justice Department's claim that such presidential decisions are beyond judicial review. The Insurrection Act and related federalization authority are central to this case. The Act allows a president to take control of a state's National Guard in limited situations—such as rebellion or when laws can't be enforced by normal means. This case illustrates both the expansive view of executive power and the judiciary's role in checking it, even amid claims of national emergency.US court lets Trump keep control of California National Guard for nowPresident Trump has once again extended the deadline for TikTok to be sold to a U.S. owner, granting a third 90-day reprieve through an executive order despite lacking a clear legal basis for the extensions. The move allows TikTok to continue operating in the U.S. while negotiations persist to transfer ownership from China-based ByteDance to an American entity. The previous extension fell through when China withdrew from talks following Trump's new tariffs. This delay has not yet faced a court challenge, even though the original ban—passed by Congress and upheld by the Supreme Court—briefly took effect in January. Trump's personal popularity on the platform, where he has more than 15 million followers, adds a political twist to the ongoing negotiations. TikTok praised the decision and emphasized its importance to 170 million users and 7.5 million U.S. businesses.Despite concerns from national security officials and lawmakers like Senator Mark Warner, who accuse the administration of ignoring known risks, the repeated extensions suggest a softening of resolve. Analysts describe the situation as a recurring political maneuver with no clear endpoint—likening it to the endless debates over the debt ceiling.Meanwhile, TikTok continues to roll out new features and expand its services, including AI tools debuted in Cannes, signaling confidence in its long-term U.S. presence. Tech giants Apple, Google, and Oracle remain engaged with TikTok, reassured that the administration won't penalize them under current law.Public opinion has shifted, with fewer Americans now supporting a ban compared to 2023. Concerns remain over data privacy, but many citizens are unsure or opposed to banning the app outright.Trump extends TikTok ban deadline for a third time, without clear legal basisThis week's closing theme is by Johann Sebastian Bach. Johann Sebastian Bach, one of the most influential composers in Western music history, composed the Goldberg Variations, BWV 988, in 1741. Originally written for harpsichord, the work consists of an aria followed by 30 variations, returning to the aria at the end in a da capo structure. It was likely commissioned by Count Hermann Karl von Keyserlingk, a Russian diplomat suffering from insomnia, who wanted music to soothe his sleepless nights—though this origin story is debated. The aria, which opens and closes the piece, is a gentle, sarabande-like melody in G major. Unlike other variation sets built on melodies, Bach bases the Goldberg Variations on the aria's bass line and harmonic structure. This allows for extraordinary variety in texture, form, and mood across the variations, while keeping a consistent foundation. The aria itself is simple and elegant, consisting of two balanced halves, each repeated. Its serene tone contrasts with the technical brilliance and contrapuntal complexity found in many of the following variations. Yet, the aria's emotional restraint and clarity set the tone for the entire cycle.Over the centuries, the Goldberg Variations have come to be seen as a pinnacle of keyboard composition. The aria, both opening and closing the work, serves as a kind of spiritual bookend—calm, contemplative, and timeless. Performers often approach it with reverence, as a moment of stillness and symmetry amid musical adventure.Without further ado, Johann Sebastian Bach's Goldberg Variations, BMV 988 – the aria. Enjoy! Ricky Ian Gordon has written a cycle of songs about flowers. In this episode, we hear one of them. Rachmaninoff wrote a song called “Lilacs.” We hear that, too. Bach opens his Goldberg Variations with an aria (and closes the work with that same aria). Tchaikovsky's wrote a couple of blockbuster arias in The Queen of Spades. And on we go. You don't always get to choose your relations in life: it is neither your choice what family you're born into, nor who you work with. This gamble doesn't always work out, and is sometimes made especially more tragic because we spend the majority of our days working, and we must grow up with our family - regardless of who they are. That's why it is important to choose carefully the relationships where choice is an option. You might think I'm talking about “friends” here. But, more specifically, what I mean are those little friends that come from a different species - our pets. Just as with human relations, we have to work and put a serious effort into developing the relationships we have with our pets. So make sure you are sincere with this effort. Otherwise, you risk only being Fair Weather Friends. This story was written by Phillip Clark. It was directed, engineered, and edited by Phillip Clark. When you go through a tough time, you will have people tell you that “it could be worse.” Frequently, the consolation of “worse things have happened to better people” is offered - as if to diminish the gravity of our suffering. But to imply that something could be “worse” is to state that it could be “different.” In tonight's story, we find out what truly lies behind the facade of a set of circumstances that appear to be “different” than the circumstances that have come before. So pay close attention, and be prepared to take notes, lest you have to go through all of this Again. This story was written by Phillip Clark. We've seen it time and again, nearly daily: a solution that has no problem. No, I didn't mispeak. The world is full of solutions to things that aren't even problems to begin with. But when you've only ever known problems, how could you help but think only of solutions? That is the exact situation our character finds himself in in tonight's story. He is confronted with a number of small, yet unsolvable, problems for which he seems to find one extraordinary and inexplicable solution. Of course, we know there is a name for this: we know the Latin term is Deus Ex Machina. This story was written by Phillip Clark. It was directed, engineered, and edited by Phillip Clark. Twenty-one years after Jamie Lee Curtis and Lindsay Lohan revolutionized the chick-flick with Freaky Friday, the powers that be have finally greenlit a remake. Fans were surprised to discover that the studio has taken a different approach to the reboot; this iteration of the film will feature two of the foremost voices in American political punditry, and will concern the intellectual history of one Jonah Goldberg. Jonathan Rauch of the Brookings Institution has taken over Jonah's role as host extraordinaire to flip the script and provide you, dear listener, with an understanding of Jonah's intellectual journey throughout his career, ultimately hoping to understand how Jonah prevented himself from turning into a grifting, red-hatted pod person. Jon forces Jonah to revisit his first book, leading to an epic dive into the history of the American conservative movement, along with some hypothesizing behind its disappointing pivot to populism. Further lines of questioning from Mr. Rauch cast a wide net: Did Jonah pioneer horseshoe theory? Can we blame all of this on Sarah Palin? How did Jonah process the rise of Trump and prepare his defensive strategy? Was Jonah ever tempted to join the ranks of the sellouts? The host with the most who is no longer the host reveals all, including The Dispatch's origin story, the final word on Hillary Clinton, and the hope that rests in the moral minority. Show Notes: —Liberal Fascism —Jonah and Jon on the weakness of parties —Steve Hayes, Donald Trump, and John McCain —National Review: Against Trump —Jonah on the body snatchers The Remnant is a production of The Dispatch, a digital media company covering politics, policy, and culture from a non-partisan, conservative perspective. For your *continued* pleasure: a second, special bonus episode. The response of our audience has been overwhelmingly enthusiastic about the world premiere of the private, recorded conversation between Tim Page and Glenn Gould. They wanted to learn more about this unique audio document, and we're happy to oblige. In this special program, Tim Page reflects on his spontaneous phone conversation with Glenn, and contrasts it with a later scripted interview for the 1982 Goldberg Variations recording, and recounts personal anecdotes, including a private piano performance by Gould. The episode also highlights Gould's appreciation for in-depth conversations free from clichéd questions and his humour, expressed through his fictitious alter egos, Theodore Slutz, Nigel Twitt-Thornwaite and Karlheinz Klopweisser. The discussion encompasses Gould's enormous influence on restoring the reputations composers like Strauss and Sibelius.

For a long time I've received emails and messages from people asking, and sometimes demanding, that I explore the solo piano repertoire. Other than a look at the Goldberg Variations of Bach, I've basically neglected a huge amount music, including some of the greatest works ever written. Why have I been doing this? Well, if I'm totally honest, it's been slightly out of a sense of intimidation. I'm not a pianist, and I've always been somewhat in awe of the piano and pianists. Even after spending years with this music, I still felt that I just simply didn't know the solo piano repertoire well enough to do it justice. Well, now that I've gone through ALMOST all of the symphonic standard repertoire, and now that I've started exploring the string quartet repertoire, I think it's time to throw off this sense of awe and dive right in. You might think I might not reach too high to start off, maybe an early Beethoven sonata, or a Mozart or Haydn Sonata. Well, in my opinion you've got to go big or go home, so I've decided to explore one of the towering masterpieces not only of the solo piano genre, but of all music, Schubert's Sonata in B Flat Major. This is a piece that has been described as “well-nigh perfect,” as “beyond analysis,” as including “the most extraordinary trill in the history of music,” and as “the climax and apotheosis of Schubert's instrumental lyricism and his simplicity of form.” These are just a few of the superlatives I've found in researching this piece. It was written in the last weeks of Schubert's short life, and it truly does take the listener on an unforgettable journey. There is nothing quite like Schubert's final works, and so over the next two episodes, I will take you through this remarkable sonata, a piece that Alex Ross has described as “a premature communication from the beyond.” This is a huge piece, with so much to talk about, so I've split this episode into two parts. This week we'll look at the first movement, and then in two weeks we'll cover the final three movements. Join us!

You know that portrait of Bach holding a little scrap of music? Ever wonder what the piece was? What it sounded like? That piece of paper is a six-voice, triple canon: number thirteen in the fourteen additional canons found on the back of Bach's personal copy of the Goldberg Variations. (Analysis of that specific canon around 32 min.)We've covered nine of these puzzling pieces in three previous episodes, but now it's time to call it a wrap on all fourteen. These additional canons were discovered only as late as the 1970s. For a more detailed history, check the three previous episodes dealing with these canons:Here is the image of the canon, “Christ will Crown the Cross-bearers” that appears in the family registry book belonging to J.G. Fulde:And of course, Bach and his “business card:”The bass line in both the images (and in all of the canons) is our beloved “first eight fundamental notes of the preceding aria” on which all the canons are based.Be sure to get my forthcoming three albums on PRESALE before they go live on May 17th!Volume One:Apple Music: https://tinyurl.com/nhfuws4tAmazon Music: https://tinyurl.com/mrxj7pwsVolume Two:Apple Music: https://tinyurl.com/mtykbxnzAmazon Music: https://tinyurl.com/3m7b9v6wVolume Three:Apple Music: https://tinyurl.com/mr44kwmfAmazon Music: https://tinyurl.com/3e4kwnsbHow To Support This Podcast:https://www.paypal.me/wtfbachhttps://venmo.com/wtfbachhttps://cash.app/$wtfbachor become a paid subscriber at wtfbach.substack.com Get full access to WTF Bach at wtfbach.substack.com/subscribe
Today we return to the 7th of the Goldberg Variations, the "Canary Jig." We discuss that peculiar name, and then we get into some smaller moments. Soaring flares up the keyboard, surprising altered tones, and crunchy grace notes are all over. Pushing forward into the ending, a high note leads us to the finish. We discuss why the contour of the hands makes this ending so satisfying. Goldberg var. no. 7 as performed by Jean Rondeau for the Netherlands Bach Society
In our second look at the monumental Goldberg Variations, Christian selects the beginning of the sprightly and innocent "gigue" (jig), a particular dance set here for an interplay between two hands. The jaunty rhythm of the dance is rather uneven; this leads us into a discussion about how music is naturally not even in this way (and when it is, it's too square). We discuss the Goldberg bass line which underpins the whole sequence of 30 variations and discover how it works with this one also. In two weeks, Christian will return to this variation and get more into the weeds with particular notes. Goldberg var. no. 7 as performed by Jean Rondeau for the Netherlands Bach Society
On the latest episode of ‘New Classical Tracks,' Icelandic pianist Víkingur Ólafsson explores, performs and becomes J.S. Bach's 'Goldberg Variations' on his latest album. Find out more!
Víkingur Ólafsson, Iceland's superstar pianist, engages in captivating dialogue in Part One of his interview on the Gould Standard. From Reykjavik to New York, Ólafsson delves into the profound influence of his Icelandic roots and reflects on his educational journey from early studies with his parents to Juilliard. The conversation unveils a multifaceted glimpse into his musical philosophy, exploring topics ranging from his insights into Bach's Goldberg Variations (which he has just recorded, and which he calls the greatest work of keyboard music ever written) to his nuanced views on music competitions. Ólafsson boldly contends that exceptional art should act as a catalyst for societal discourse, with the potential to overcome divisions, following in the footsteps of one of his inspirations, Glenn Gould.
Marina Abramović is an artist renowned for performances and feats of endurance, in which her body is pushed to its limits. She has moved, scandalised and delighted audiences for half a century, and is now celebrated by world-leading galleries and institutions. Marina was born in Belgrade in 1946. Her parents were honoured as war heroes for their work for the Partisan resistance movement, and both took up senior roles in the post-war Yugoslav government. Marina became interested in painting during her childhood, and went on to study art. She first made her name as a performance artist in her 20s, creating events which often shocked viewers – and were equally traumatic for her. In 1974 she placed 72 objects, including sharp tools, a whip and a loaded pistol, on a table and invited gallery goers to use them on her, however they wished. She was attacked and left scarred, and part of her hair went white. For many years she led a nomadic existence, creating works with her partner, the German artist Ulay. In 1997, in response to the war in Bosnia, she created a prize-winning work for the Venice Biennale, in which for four days she attempted to scrub the blood from a vast pile of cow bones. In 2010 her exhibition at the Museum of Modern Art in New York attracted almost a million people, many queuing for hours for a chance to sit opposite her in silence as part of her marathon performance The Artist is Present. More recently her work has been celebrated in a major retrospective exhibition at the Royal Academy in London, along with performances at English National Opera, marking the centenary of Maria Callas.
