Bartees Strange is my guest on this episode of That's How I Remember It. In February, Bartees released a great record called Horror, and he's on the road now in support of it. We talked a lot about the record and also about Christian rock bands, which horror movies scare him, Bon Iver's song "Skinny Love," writing short songs on purpose, hardcore as an inspiration, and so much more. Great talk, I was really happy to get to speak to Bartees. Listen and subscribe!

John and Paige talk with photographer/tour manager/many-hat-wearer Ashley Gellman about life on the road and at home. Ashley has worked with artists like Bartees Strange, Jamie xx, Jonas Brothers, boygenius, and is currently on the road with Lucy Daucus. She's a larger-than-life personality, and she breaks down her life on the road, her upbringing as an independent kid doing her own thing, her relationships with the early artists she worked with, found family amidst her touring peers, and how to capture the best shot without being in the way. Amidst a whirlwind of travel and work, Ashley talks in depth about how she's grown to embrace being home, and how she balances the "all-in" touring lifestyle with the calmer vibes of being back in Philadelphia. If you can manage to pin her down, Ashley does do photo shoots for hire when she can, so follow her on IG.  On Sunday, May 18th, the 12th annual Brain Fest is happening at Fringe Bar in Philadelphia from 5pm to midnight. Brain Fest raises money and awareess for treatment of brain tumor, with all the proceeds going to the American Brain Tumor Association. Performers include Adventure Lost, The Lunar Year, Alright Junior, Trash Boy, Erin Fox and the Hounds, Annalise Curtim, and more. Bartees Strange makes music that doesn't sit still. One moment it's soaring indie rock, the next it's touched by soul, punk energy, or the weight of hip-hop—yet it all holds together in a way that feels completely his own. We sat down in a quiet Berlin hotel room to talk about the creative process behind his new album Horror, produced by Jack Antonoff and released on the iconic 4AD label.Bartees doesn't approach songwriting as a straight path. It's more like piecing together different fragments until something unexpected clicks. “I might write five or six sections and not know they're in the same song until I start plugging them into each other,” he said. That instinctive method pulls influence from across the board—Fleetwood Mac, Parliament, Burial, Neil Young—and filters it through a sound that's urgent, intimate, and ever-shifting.What stood out most in our conversation was his view on genre itself. For Bartees, it's not just about music—it's about identity, and how people are often encouraged to box themselves in. “Music is representative of people,” he told me. “And people separate themselves from each other because of all these things that don't make sense. Through music, I can show people that all those things you thought were unique to you are also unique to them.” His work holds a quiet defiance, a kind of gentle political energy that moves through emotion rather than statement. Before committing to music full-time, Bartees worked as deputy press secretary at the FCC under Obama. That experience brings a clear-eyed perspective to his writing—but it was never about strategy. “I tried not to do it. I got a job, I worked… but after a while, I was like I'd rather just not survive than not do what I want to do.” That sense of risk and necessity lives in every note.If you're enjoying Lost and Sound, please do subscribe and leave a rating or review on Apple, Spotify, Amazon, or wherever you listen. A group of government workers filed a lawsuit in federal court in California today, arguing that Elon Musk’s demands for federal employees to provide a bulleted list of everything they accomplished last week violates federal law. Some Democrats and a few Republicans have announced they’re running in California’s 2026 gubernatorial race. Others are waiting to see if 2024 Democratic presidential hopeful Kamala Harris will enter.  In his third album “Horror,” Bartees Strange channels terror and heartbreak into newfound confidence and wide-ranging sonic pastiche. Weight loss drugs like Ozempic bring health gains, but at what costs to relationships? Couples must face new challenges as eating habits, routines, and identities change.

Prepare yourself for bloat and bombast because we're discussing Joel Schumacher's 2004 adaptation of Andrew Lloyd Webber's The Phantom of the Opera for its 20th anniversary! Tagging in for the conversation is queer musician Bartees Strange, who provides some much needed musical insight on the film. Join us as we try to figure out why this movie doesn't sing (sorry) the way it should. It's a constant war of style vs. substance, with a lot of visuals that look great....but mean nothing. Adding insult to injury is the perplexing decision to cast non-singer Gerard Butler as the Phantom, who makes some questionable decisions regarding the villain's characterization. Plus: Emmy Rossum's breakout role, Patrick Wilson's Lord Farquad haircut, reprise after reprise after reprise, golden arm candelabra holders and a runaway chandelier. ***Episode Correction: During his prodcution history, Trace says that the stage production of The Phantom of the Opera premiered in 1968, but it was actually 1986. Broken Record with Rick Rubin, Malcolm Gladwell, Bruce Headlam and Justin Richmond

Bartees Strange is an amalgamation of musical styles. Listen to any given song on his newest release, Farm To Table, and you can hear hints of early aughts emo, auto-tuned hip-hop vocals, and country blues—all housed in an indie rock veneer. Bartees wide-reaching sound makes perfect sense given his Midwest upbringing and early influences. He was raised in Mustang, Oklahoma as one of the few Black kids in an area rife with racial violence. As a  teenager he discovered Christian hardcore punk and for the first time he felt at home in a scene that embraced outsiders of all kinds. After graduating college and a stint working in D.C., Bartees  moved to Brooklyn where he found a bunch of musical collaborators. In 2020 he released his debut album, Live Forever, and this year he dropped his follow-up album, Farm To Table, to critical acclaim. On today's episode Justin Richmond talks to Bartees Strange about his ascent into the upper echelon of indie rock, now that he considers artists like Phoebe Bridgers and Lucy Dacus friends. Bartees also performs an acoustic version of his song “Heavy Heart," and he plays stems from two songs off his new album, revealing how he is able to expertly build what he calls, “sections on sections.” You can listen to a playlist of some of our favorite Bartees Strange songs HERE.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
