Elliot Broder is a standup comedian, DIY agriculture enthusiast, and former unofficial spokesperson of U.S. Catfish. When I landed a coveted elk tag this spring, I posted about it on social media, soliciting a more experienced hunter to accompany me on my elk hunt. Everyone who chimed in ended up washing out except for my last choice-- Elliot Broder. When you have one option, that's your best option, so I put the screws into him to get him to come. Spoiler alert: we weren't just successful on our hunt, we ended up having the best time, Elliot kicked much ass, and in the future, he's going to be the first person I call for my next hare-brained scheme. He's a deep dude, too, with much to say about building a meaningful life under the shadow of capitalism. Hope you dig it.

Thank you for listening!   Kyle Shutt is an American musician widely known for his guitar playing in the seminal stoner metal band, The Sword, since 2003. From the punk and indie clubs of Austin, TX to arenas all over the world on Metallica's World Magnetic Tour, The Sword climbed the Billboard Top 200 charts to number 17 with their fourth album, Apocryphon. Having played well over a thousand shows, The Sword changed the landscape of heavy metal during the early 2000's and their influence can be heard far and wide in music today. The Sword will be supporting Primus on their A Farwell to Kings tour in 2021. Not one to rest on his laurels, in 2017 Shutt produced Doom Side of the Moon, a heavy metal reimagining of Pink Floyd's greatest hits with an accompanying psychedelic live show spectacular. The completely independent endeavor landed at number 82 on the Billboard Top 200 charts the week of its release. A followup album will be coming in 2022. Shutt turned to crowdfunding in 2018 with the undertaking of a solo album in which he wrote every song and played every instrument over a 14 day period. The Kickstarter campaign went over its goal by 25% and the ensuing support tour saw him share the stage with Electric Six and even included a slot on the Exit 111 Festival. More punk than metal, Shutt's solo career set him apart from being just a stoner rock guitarist and set the stage for many of his other endeavors. A followup solo album will also be arriving in 2022. During the coronavirus pandemic, Shutt kicked his creativity into overdrive with a painting career that saw over 150 paraody versions of himself painted onto copies of his solo album LPs and were sold directly to fans. With subjects from Star Wars characters to superheroes, no pop culture icon was safe from his self portraits. Shutt also launched another successful crowdfunding effort during the pandemic to write the first in his series of lighthearted memoirs, “Written in Stoned”. The Kickstarter campaign once again went over its goal by 25% and the accompanying parody images promoting the book on his social media accounts further cemented his signature brand of humor in the eyes of his fans. At the turn of 2021 The High Way with Kyle Shutt was launched, a self produced podcast featuring musicians and entertainers conversing with Shutt about life in the industry. Guests included Neil Fallon (Clutch), Dave Wyndorf (Monster Magnet) and Buzz Osborne (Melvins) and was immediately embraced by fans. Although he launched the podcast in an admittedly over saturated market, the program quickly rose to number 23 on the Apple Podcast Music Interview Charts in the U.S. as well as other charts all over the world. Having built his fan base without anything but hard work and relentless dedication to his craft in the face of ever changing adversity, Shutt is a unique force in an unsure world and isn't going away any time soon.

In third grade, he recited an entire George Carlin album side for show-and-tell. He first performed standup at nine, and at an open mic at 13. He played music professionally for 15 years before returning to standup at age 35. His comedy often touches on personal topics such as his depression and alcoholism.   A gifted, one of a kind storyteller, Sheen has become a secret favorite among comedy fans across the globe. He has a gift for mining the dark depths of the human condition and excavating interesting and very personal stories, filled with shocks, laughter and hope. He is also a hopeless and gigantic idiot.   Catch Derek performing in my Sideyard on Nov 18th!

The Giraffes are a cult band from Brooklyn that has been leveling crowds with their signature mixture of heavy rock, punk, metal and surf since 1996. A well-earned reputation for mayhem has followed the band from the start. Their guitarist was shot in the leg outside of a White Castle late one night in Brooklyn after being accosted by an off-duty fire marshal with an itchy trigger finger. The bullet is still lodged in his knee. Their singer Aaron Lazar has suffered multiple Sudden Cardiac Death events. He has a defibrillator implanted in his chest which has erroneously shocked him on stage. During a show at Chicago's legendary Double Door, it sent 700 volts directly into his heart 3 times in 30 seconds. He finished the set. I've known Aaron for more than 20 years now and he's one of my closest friends. We have Been In Some Shit together. We've toured together, I punched him in the neck, I returned his rental car the first time he died, we were in a band together and it broke up in a hail of recrimination. We're still friends. I'm eerily close with his cat, Bill. We talk a lot here about how death renewed his interest in life and I think it's a really useful conversation. We also play a couple of new songs, one from his band D'NT with former Beat the Devil drummer Mitchell King and one from the Giraffes. Enjoy.

Joe Cardamone has been on my radar for fifteen years but I actually met him for the first time at Lanegan's funeral. He made a keychain for Mark's friends like the old hotel keys, imprinted with "Mark Lanegan, the Night Porter, 1964-2022." This is our first real conversation and, man, it was really so fantastic to talk to him.   Los Angeles native artist Joe Cardamone has lived a few lifetimes while leaving a wiry dent in the global underground music and film scenes. The band that Joe fronted for 17 years, The Icarus Line, formed in East Los Angeles in 1998. Over the course of six albums the punk agitators became an underground phenomenon and the most dangerous, if not the greatest, punk group of their generation. The cult band that never gave up. Performances at the Reading and Leeds Festivals in front of 30,000+ fans, multiple appearances on the legendary John Peel show, criss-crossing the US in a van opening a stadium tour for A Perfect Circle and The Cult and a UK tour with Primal Scream are just some of the "greatest hits" of a legend loaded with nearly mythic live performances and chaos. But it was the death of guitarist and original member Alvin DeGuzman in 2017 following a long battle with cancer, which was the actual end of The Icarus Line (a demise recently depicted in Michael Grodner's independent film "The Icarus Line Must Die" which is now streaming on Amazon and Hulu). The following year Joe released his solo debut, the frenzied Holy War album and film on his own imprint American Primitive. Cardamone's new approach was a modern one man show that forged R&B and crushing electronics with the combative spirit of his formative punk years. While crafting a pair of follow up albums in 2020 the world stopped and the QUARENTINA project emerged in response. Outside of his work as an artist Joe has produced and collaborated with some of the greatest artists of our time including Mark Lanegan, lan Astbury, Warren Ellis (Nick Cave and The Bad Seeds) and James Williamson (The Stooges).

"To describe Star Anna's sound would depend on the day, the show, the album, or the band. Alt country, folk, blues, soul, and Americana are all fitting, but what remains the central focus of every performance is her voice. Whether she's sitting on a stage with only her acoustic guitar or backed by some of Seattle's finest musicians, it's her voice that defines her music. It is belted with a raw, grittiness that bellows from a deep, dark reserve. It is softly laid down atop gentle strings, aching and tender. It is spit out with a fierce recklessness that echoes the glory days of punk. She's been compared to Joan Jett, Arlo Guthrie, Fiona Apple and Joe Cocker but she is unmistakably her own entity. Spare, fragile and gutsy, Star Anna is the real thing."
