In a quick 1-2 punch after talking with Daniel Blumberg (The Brutalist), Bryce Dessner (The National, The Revenant, The Two Popes) joins The Film Scorer podcast! Bryce released two scores last year, for the films Sing Sing and We Live In Time. However, Bryce and I were under a tight time constraint and so had to pick and choose what we chatted about; no time for a classic rambling conversation. As such, we spend much of our conversation covering his score for Sing Sing. This includes, among other things, choosing to focus the music on nature and escapism (rather than the more obvious matching of the prison setting), making space for the performers, and the film's equitable compensation system. Of course, we still manage to pack a lot in, so we cover quite a bit more as well, both about Sing Sing and various unexpected topics. Bryce's score, and much of his other music, is available on all major platforms. Sing Sing was released earlier last year and will be re-released in theaters (at least in the US) on January 1. You can find out more about Bryce on his website.
I first heard The National 17 years ago this month I think, and I fell in love instantly. They've continued to be one of my favourite bands, and it's been great to see them ascend to new heights of popularity and pursue interesting creative directions in the band and outside. Guitarist Aaron Dessner is now a key producer and co-writer for the likes of Taylor Swift and Gracie Abrams. His twin brother Bryce Dessner is a composer whose orchestral and chamber compositions have been commissioned by the LA Philharmonic, Edinburgh International Festival and Kronos Quartet amongst others, and he's collaborated with the likes of Philip Glass, Steve Reich, Paul Simon, Sufjan Stevens and many more. Frontman Matt Berninger has become one of the most compelling rock frontman of the 21st century with his often darkly funny, self-deprecating lyrics, and gangly, physical stage presence. Drummer Bryan Devendorf is one of the most distinctive drummers operating in rock today. Which leaves my guest this episode, bassist Scott Devendorf. I feel like Scott is the member of the band I knew least about. Obviously I've seen him onstage many times anchoring the band, but I was intrigued to see how the interview would go, and was pleased to discover Scott was excellent company. The National have just released a new live album entitled “Rome” which was recorded this past June in, well Rome obviously. It does a pretty good job of capturing the catharsis and sometimes chaos of a National show. I thought it was an interesting decision to focus on one particular show rather than compile tracks from across the tour. I was curious how they would handle the situations where Matt goes walkabout with the microphone, climbing into the crowd and getting mobbed with fans singing their heads off. Scott had a lot to say about these decisions, and about The National as a live act in general. He was really generous with his time. I only found out this interview was happening less than 24 hours before it took place, so it was quite a whirlwind getting it prepped and organised. I again had some technical issues so I've mostly just used the zoom feed but it sounds fine. To have The National represented on the podcast really means a lot. This will be the last episode of the year, and what a way to go out.
"Sing Sing" premiered at the 2023 Toronto International Film Festival, where it was praised for its relevance to current social issues, powerful performances, and skilled direction. It's one of the most acclaimed films of 2024 and a strong Oscar contender for A24. The film tells the important story of a group of people who are incarcerated at Sing Sing Correctional Facility who find redemption through the art of creating theatrical stage shows in the Rehabilitation Through the Arts (RTA) program. I had the privilege of hearing from breakthrough actor, the Gotham Award-winning Clarence Maclin, about his life, experience making the film, and dreams for the future, which you can listen to below. Following this conversation, Daniel Howat was fortunate to speak with the people behind the music from the film, composer Bryce Dessner and songwriters Adrian Quesada & Abraham Alexander, for the closing credits track "Like A Bird." Don't miss the opportunity to see this remarkable film, which will be returning to theaters on January 17th, 2025, from A24 and is up for your consideration in all eligible categories for the upcoming 97th Academy Awards. Playlist:Judeline, rusowsky - HeavenlyDinamarca, Irenegarry - casandraOklou, underscores - harvest skyDJ Seinfeld - HopecoreLogic1000, Empress Of - side by sideDisclosure - ArachnidsTwo Shell - be gentle with meCharli xcx - club classics featuring bb trickzParis Texas - RökKOutRalphie Choo, Paris Texas - WHIPCREAMNicolas Jaar - AquíBikôkô, Crystal Murray - LA MANOcaracazador - MI ROSTROCarlos Ares - ImportanteLaura Marling - CarolineSufjan Stevens, Katia Labèque, Marielle Labèque, David Chalmin, Bryce Dessner – Reflexion Escuchar audio

Send us a Text Message.I've been feeling a bit under the weather, while also preparing for my sweetie's upcoming visit (a much longer visit this time), and my heart's full of romance and thoughts about when we first fell in love. So it's the perfect time to replay my episode about Cyrano, Joe Wright's lush romantic musical version of the classic Cyrano de Bergerac story. Every gorgeous musical phrase and motif by Aaron and Bryce Dessner of The National, and lyric by The National lead singer Matt Berninger and his partner, Carin Besser, embodies the yearning thrill and desperate longing of falling deeply in love with someone. Guitarist, composer, and teacher Benjamin Verdery seems to know everybody who's ever picked up the instrument. Ben is a classical guitarist himself, but his musical friends include Andy Summers of the Police, the fingerpicking virtuoso Leo Kottke, flamenco legend Paco Pena, guitarist Bryce Dessner of the indie rock band The National – the list goes on and on. Lots of contemporary composers have written works for him, and Ben himself has written a wide range of works. He's filled a 40 year career with a wild assortment of collaborations and collaborators. Recently, Ben emailed to say he was retiring next year, so it seemed high time that we invite him back here before he jets off to Hawaii. Benjamin Verdery plays some of his own pieces from his collection called Some Towns and Cities, and yes, at least one of those towns is in Hawaii. Set list: 1. Capitola, CA 2. Keanae, HI 3. Secretly Society presents a three-episode mini-series about collaboration, friendship, and a community-driven project; originally formed by Justin Vernon and Aaron Dessner in 2008, this is the magical and illusive tale of Big Red Machine. This series is narrated by music writer and broadcaster Laura Barton, including live interviews with Vernon, Aaron Dessner, Bryce Dessner, Sharon Van Etten, Anais Mitchell, and more. The conclusion to the story, for now. Big Red Machine has been a rejection of the music industry's expectations weighing upon Dessner and Vernon, but also a place of solace for the pair amongst their sometimes painful struggles with mental health. The pair take turns grounding each other through their successes and supporting during their lows, while writing songs like “Brycie” and “Hutch” that pay tribute to close-knit family and friends. The pool of collaborators ripples out ever-further, and new methods of working to complement each others' contributions carry on the experimental spirit of Big Red Machine. Jean-Yves talks to Tom about the need to collaborate, his love of Debussy, Gershwin and Bill Evans, and why challenging conventions and being yourself as an artist are the keys to success and happiness. He also shares his excitement about an upcoming multisensory performance of Alexander Scriabin's 1910 tone poem 'Prometheus, The Poem of Fire' - a collaboration with Cartier in-house perfumer Mathilde Laurent, conductor Esa-Pekka Salonen and San Francisco Symphony which involves not only light and colour in addition to the music, but scent too.Tom talks to pianist Alice Sara Ott and composer Bryce Dessner about a new piano concerto he's written for her, which receives its UK premiere in February. Inspired by Alice's playing, the piece is also dedicated to Bryce's sister Jessica, a dancer and choreographer who has shaped his musical life. Alice talks about her love of Bryce's music and the challenges of getting inside a new piece. Bryce discusses his approach to the concerto, the power of acoustic music and how his work as a composer for the concert hall relates to his life as guitarist and writer in the band The National.

Aaron and Bryce Dessner did the music, and this really excited Hunter because of their previous collaborations with other musicians he likes. This film follows an uncle and his nephew who are brought together by unforeseen circumstances and learn to coexist and bond, while untangling their own troubles. It is a joy to watch and we think you will enjoy it. But... Is C'mon C'mon Good?If you'd like to suggest a film or film franchise, or if you'd just like to say hello, you can reach us at biigpodcast@gmail.com, @biigpodcast on Twitter, or @butisitgoodpodcast on Instagram, TikTok, and YouTube! Derived from Erica Schmidt's musical retelling of Edmond Rostand's oft-staged play, Cyrano stars Peter Dinklage as the titular protagonist. Caught in romantic intrigue alongside him is Haley Bennett as Roxanne and Kelvin Harrison Jr. as Christian. The basic plot of this version isn't too different from most of the traditional renditions, but several key alterations are present in both the text and the subtext of Cyrano; this is apparent both in the dialogue and in the songs composed by Aaron and Bryce Dessner of The National. Ryan is joined by Sylvan and Cheryl for a discussion about this striking (if uneven) film. Talking points naturally include unrequited love, the pitfalls of escalating lies, and Sylvan's pet peeve about casting Hollywood musicals with actors who don't have professional singing ability. --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/ryan-valentine3/support
Matt Berninger and Bryce Dessner of The National join Norah by the fireplace to talk about and play songs from their amazing new album, The First Two Pages of Frankenstein. They fill her in on what it was like to come together as a band while living in far away places, the inspiration for the album, and writers block. Matt's warm baritone inspires Norah to ask for a duet on the first-ever acoustic performance of a decade-old song. Recorded 4/29/23. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
«This album is dedicated to the light of my life, my beloved partner and best friend Evans Richardson, who passed away in April.» Gute Besserung! Wie immer verlosen wir das Sounds! Album der Woche: Gewinnt «Javelin» von Sufjan Stevens auf CD jeden Tag live im Radio.

Anchored by evocative melodies and an enthralling lyrical narrative, First Two Pages of Frankenstein signals a thrilling new chapter in the band's discography. The 11-song album was produced by The National at Long Pond Studios in upstate New York and features guest appearances by Taylor Swift, Phoebe Bridgers and Sufjan Stevens. The follow-up to 2019's top five hit album I Am Easy To Find, First Two Pages of Frankenstein was initially stalled while lead singer Matt Berninger navigated “a very dark spot where I couldn't come up with lyrics or melodies at all, and that period lasted for over a year. Even though we'd always been anxious and argued quite a lot whenever we were working on a record, this was the first time it ever felt like maybe things really had come to an end.” Instead, The National “managed to come back together and approach everything from a different angle, and because of that we arrived at what feels like a new era for the band,” according to guitarist/pianist Bryce Dessner. Pianist Lisa Kaplan of eighth blackbird joins us to chat about the many evolutions of their organization, from the original ensemble to their many teaching endeavors. We chat about the Chicago Artists Workshop and Blackbird Creative Lab, two of the ways in which they continue to “move music forward” beyond their primarily performance-based projects. Kaplan shares about how the ensemble conceptualizes and puts projects—such as This is my Home—into action. We speak about how the organization integrates interns into their administrative process. And, we ask, "why 'eighth blackbird'?" Born in Motown, Lisa Kaplan is a pianist specializing in the performance of new work by living composers. Kaplan is the founding pianist and Executive Director of the four-time Grammy Award-winning sextet Eighth Blackbird. Kaplan has won numerous awards, performed all over the country and has premiered new pieces by hundreds of composers, including Andy Akiho, Jennifer Higdon, Amy Beth Kirsten, David Lang, Missy Mazzoli, Nico Muhly, George Perle, and Pamela Z. She has had the great pleasure to collaborate and make music with an eclectic array of incredibly talented people - Laurie Anderson, Jeremy Denk, Bryce Dessner, Philip Glass, Bon Iver, J. Ivy, Glenn Kotche, Shara Nova, Will Oldham, Natalie Portman, Gustavo Santaolalla, Robert Spano, Tarrey Torae, Dawn Upshaw and Michael Ward-Bergeman to name a few. As a proud, single-mama-by-choice, Kaplan has been having an incredible time raising and learning from her happy-go-lucky 4 year old, Frida. Musically as of late, she has also greatly enjoyed and appreciated the opportunity to do both composing and arranging for Eighth Blackbird as well as some producing. In 2019, Kaplan co-produced her first record, When We Are Inhuman with Bryce Dessner. Kaplan is a true foodie, gourmet cook, avid reader, crossword and Scrabble addict, enjoys baking ridiculously complicated pastry and loves outdoor adventures. She has summited Mt. Kilimanjaro, braved the Australian outback, stared an enormous elephant in the face in Tanzania's Ngorongoro Crater and survived close encounters with grizzly bears in the Brooks Range of Alaska. I met Alec in... Jesus, 2001? Ironically, we met partially in the context of me grieving a friend who had passed. We met again through music. He had started a record label in order to put out the music by a new band from Ohio called The National. I was managing Baby Dayliner, who wound up on Brassland. But our way into the conversation today is Mark Lanegan. When Lanegan's memoir 'Sing Backwards and Weep' published, Alec read it and plunged into Lanegan's music during the pandemic. We cover a lot here but honestly, you need to listen to this podcast because Alec is such an earnest fan of music, even after working in the industry for more than 20 years. Being a fan is deeply cool. Remaining a fan is even cooler. Alec Hanley Bemis is a writer, producer & curator of creative projects, primarily in music. In 2001, he co-founded the Brassland label with Aaron and Bryce Dessner of The National. For that work, he has been covered by The Irish Times, The Guardian, Print Magazine, and The Wall Street Journal. In his first career as a writer & journalist, he was published in The New Yorker, The New York Times, Bookforum and LA Weekly on topics ranging from Beck to backyard wrestling. Once a month or so he posts algorithm-free music playlists to his mixtape delivery service AHB's Goodies: http://alechanleybemis.substack.com Learn more at http://brassland.org and http://alechanleybemis.com
Ladies and gentlemen, this is a really good one and I've been so excited to share it with you. My next guest is an actor I consider one of the greatest of our generation. He's worked with everyone from Del Toro to Malick, Tarantino to Soderbergh. He's an extraordinary actor who loses himself in the life of his film and television characters. Ever evolving, he's a true chameleon and shapeshifter, presenting us with a new and intriguing character. This is Clifton Collins. Jr. Clifton Collins Jr. has acting in his blood. His grandfather, Pedro Gonzalez Gonzalez, became an American icon, starring alongside John Wayne and Mel Blanc throughout his career. Clifton burst onto the scene in 1997, but it was his portrayal of Frankie Flowers in Traffic that forever cemented his status as an actor to be taken seriously. Since then he's stolen the screen in films like Capote and Sunshine Cleaning. Clifton's latest film Jockey is yet another work of art, with his titular performance earning him the Sundance Film Festival U.S. Dramatic Special Jury Award for Best Acting.Jockey tells the story of an aging jockey competing to win one last title for his longtime trainer, who has acquired what appears to be a championship horse. But the years – and injuries – have taken a toll on his body, throwing into question his ability to continue his lifelong passion. And the arrival of a young rookie rider, who claims to be his son, and whom he takes under his wing, further complicates the path to fulfilling his dream. The Smith Society is an interview series focused on storytellers. It's an intimate look at artists -- who they are, how they got from A to B, a detailed look at what makes them tick and advice to those pursuing a career in telling stories, as well as some insight into the industry, pitching projects, and, of course, how we can make the world a better place. The Smith Society Podcast: This is the Smith Society, a podcast about storytellers and storytelling.
