What if one of punk rock's most essential records wasn't born in London or New York—but in a repressive corner of 1970s Australia? In this episode, we dive into I'm Stranded, the ferocious, lo-fi debut from Brisbane's own The Saints—a band that burned bright before punk even knew what it was supposed to sound like.Recorded in just two days with cranked amps, no overdubs, and a heavy dose of youth rebellion, I'm Stranded delivers raw power with surprising musical depth. The Saints weren't copying anyone—they couldn't. Isolated from punk's UK and US scenes, they built something unique: a mix of garage rock swing, proto-punk energy, and rock 'n' roll heart that would go on to influence everyone from Kurt Cobain to Mark Lanegan. This episode unpacks the album's explosive origins, its unexpected impact overseas, and how the band's refusal to conform—musically or stylistically—helped set a new standard for underground music. We also explore its enduring influence on punk, garage, grunge, and beyond. If you dig bands like The Stooges, The Damned, Radio Birdman, Nirvana, or The Hives, you'll want to hear this one.

My guest today is just fun to talk with. It's Jeff Fielder. I first heard Jeff when researching for Mark Lanegan's episode. He's worked with so many people and made so much great music that it's almost unbelievable. But he started off admiring rock before playing any. He grew up in Alaska with much older brothers. Long haired, Les Paul playing, Barracuda driving brothers. So Jeff got into music early. In fact, he started gigging before middle school in a 17 piece jazz band led by his future middle school music teacher and at one point, probably took one guitar lesson from the devil. His family moved to Seattle in the heyday of grunge. He played in a few bands that should have gone farther than they did. He started hanging out with Dave Abruzzesse and getting into session work. But after a while he put down music completely and became a craft bartender. But working with one artist brought him back. That's when things started to snowball and they haven't stopped. He's played with Mark Lanegan, Amy Ray, Indigo Girls, Satchel, and Painted Shield. And despite his best efforts to the contrary, has made beautiful music with his wife, Tekla Waterfield. Most recently, he's recorded a wild cover of Megadeth's Peace Sells…But Who's Buying with some amazing musicians, including mutual friend, Mike Squires for Couch Riffs. It's great to have an old friend on the show — and this week we've got Jonny Polonsky. Lucky you. This is a great episode where we talk to the great singer-songwriter-studio rat about moving to and prospering in LA, growing up as a backstage-teenaged Chicago presence, bossing around Rick Rubin, Mark Lanegan, playing on a Neil Diamond session, being Frank Black's boy, Chris Cornell & Dio, Gabe as Sid Haig, and Jonny's great new record that comes out June 7 on Loosegroove records.

Flea. Putting last week behind us, this was genuinely one of my favourite conversations I've had for the show. Like many, I was first aware of Isobel as member of Scottish indie band Belle and Sebastian. I found her such a compelling figure. She looked like she had stepped out of a French new wave movie. She was a cello player in an indie rock band. And when she sang, she had this enigmatic, whisper-quiet vocal style. While still a member of Belle and Sebastian she made a couple of solo albums under the name The Gentle Waves, the second of which, “Swansong For You”, is particularly lovely and one I listened to a lot when I was younger. It was recently reissued for Record Store Day. She left Belle and Sebastian in the middle of a US tour in 2002. Things were somewhat complicated by her romantic entanglement with the bands frontman Stuart Murdoch, and the unravelling of that relationship clearly ramped up the tension for Isobel. We get into it in our chat, and I reference some comments she made in a recent Uncut magazine feature, I think it was in the December 2023 issue. If you have access to it, it's definitely worth reading in the light of our conversation. It was a reminder to me, that for as much as we can get fascinated and a degree of entertainment out of the interpersonal relationships and fallouts in the history of bands we love, on the other side of it are real people and real feelings, and I was certainly reminded of that during out chat. Isobel also made 3 well-received albums with the late Mark Lanegan, and clearly Mark's well-documented erratic behaviour also took a toll on Isobel, and that bleeds into our chat as well. We also talk about her recent single 4316. We delve into her fascinating childhood. It's a “life, the universe and everything” chat this week. I hope you enjoy it. Welcome to the LEGENDS Podcast by All Day Vinyl, hosted by Scott Dudelson. Our guest is rock and roll icon Duff McKagan, founding member of Guns N' Roses, Velvet Revolver & Loaded. This in depth conversation digs deep into McKagan's songwriting style, influences and process as well as the evolution of his solo work from loud rock to singer-songwriter over the last 10 years. We also dive into McKagan's creative journey, particularly over the pandemic year, a period that teased out some of his most fruitful inspirations and his latest album "Lighthouse." In addition to digging deep into his creative process, McKagan talks about the status of his unreleased album 'Beautiful Disease,' Mark Lanegan's legacy and influence, working and learning from Iggy Pop, the current status of The Neurotic Outsiders, creating music with Chad Smith and Andrew Watt as the new 'Wrecking Crew' and his dedication to the craft of songwriting. This conversation is an essential listen for fans of Duff McKagan and those eager to explore the songwriting process of a rock legend. -- Please Rate & Subscribe if you enjoy this episode, Thank You!

Brett Netson is a guitarist, singer and song-writer from Boise, Idaho. He has toured and recorded extensively with Built To Spill, Mark Lanegan, Earth and is a founding member of Caustic Resin. His most recent contribution is a re-imagined version of Teeth Of Lions Rule The Divine by Earth, and is out now on special "low frequency" re-release of the classic Earth 2 record on Sub Pop Records. In this episode, the longtime friends and forever ago bandmates discuss the state of "work", why Brett quit playing music for a short period of time, and what brought him back. Brett shares his thoughts on the healthy benefits of Drone music, how it enhances his life and why singular thought is beneficial. We learn what is the glue that binds Brett and Dylan Carlson's musical relationship, why Brett found himself having to choose between not ONE but TWO deals with the devil and he explains the process of tearing apart and rebuilding an Earth song on his own. Brett and Joe make fun of themselves and we hear a few magnificent tunes. Daníel Hjálmtýsson - No Reception (feat. Aðalbjörn Tryggvason) from the 2022 self-released album Labyrinthia. While Daníel Hjálmtýsson's recorded work only dates back to 2020, he's made quite a splash in the past few years, perking the ears of his fellow Icelanders as well as a particular Seattleite - Kevin Cole. He recently caught their performance at Tremor Festival which is set at secret locations around São Miguel island in the Azores and has been said by some to be the “world's weirdest music festival.” So stunned by their performance, he had to share their music with the world. In November, Daníel Hjálmtýsson, which also includes Hálfdán Árnason and Skúli Gíslason, released their debut full-length Labyrinthia. The album leans into Nick Cave-esque gothic rock that Mark Lanegan, also a clear inspiration, cited as, “Neo-goth music that brings to mind the forbidding landscapes of his native Iceland. One can imagine him on a stage in a church-turned-dungeon somewhere in the Reykjavik underbelly.” I don't think I could possibly describe it better than Lanegan so I'll let him do the talking. Our Song of the Day is the lead single off Labyrinthia, “No Reception,” which features guest vocals from fellow Icelandic rocker, Aðalbjörn Tryggvason, of the long-running post-metal band Sólstafir. It's a slow-churner about the anxieties of loneliness and unhealthy coping mechanisms. Also, perhaps because I've recently binged the new Interview with a Vampire series, the words, “I'll never see another /I'll never see another /Day” seem like a song Louis might write. A melancholy ode to the plight of eternal darkness. The official video for “No Reception” debuts today, alongside our Song of the Day, and was directed, edited, and produced by Jónatan Leó.
