Met Chorus Artists will perform on May 4 A few photos on the Met Chorus Artists website show five singers and an accompanist performing at the Howland Cultural Center in 2018. On Sunday (May 4), the group will return with a pianist and narrator along with two tenors, three sopranos, a mezzo-soprano and a bass-baritone to present History of Opera: Up Close. There's a long tradition of classical chamber settings featuring vocalists, usually paired with a piano or small ensemble. The repertoire is known as lieder in Germany, melodie in France and art songs elsewhere, says Sara Heaton, a soprano who will be performing. But selling tickets for stripped-down vocal concerts can be a challenge, says Akiko Sasaki, music director at the Howland Chamber Music Circle. In 2017, Sasaki introduced a Classics for Kids series and eight years ago, Met Chorus Artists performed a show for the wee ones. On May 4, they will present a young person's concert in the afternoon that pulls examples from The Magic Flute to punctuate points. The 4 p.m. adult-oriented retrospective is being performed for the first time ever. Selections range from the Baroque era, represented by Claudio Monteverdi (born 1567) and George Friedrich Handel, to contemporary opera, including works by Igor Stravinsky and Kevin Puts (born 1972). Excerpts by the genre's one-name stars - Mozart, Verdi, Wagner and Puccini - will also air. Heaton and Sasaki's friendship spawned the 2018 visit from Met Chorus Artists, a nonprofit outreach for members of the Metropolitan Opera chorus. "We started it a few years ago with the goal of bringing the music to other spaces outside the opera house and to work on a smaller scale than the grand opera that we do at the Met," says Heaton. Sasaki also takes chamber music beyond the concert hall by programming pop-ups in libraries, art galleries and Beacon Music Factory (on May 3). But the Howland Cultural Center, with its renowned acoustics for unplugged instruments, is a special place to see such a performance, she says. "A program like this fits well in a chamber setting," she says. "It's exciting because opera is usually performed in a big house with 4,000 people in the audience. Here, the singing fills up the room and you can feel their vibrato." The narrator, Whitney Young, a composer and conductor who shatters the stereotype with sleeves, neck tattoos and attitude, inspired the format after several singers in the Met Chorus attended Young's lecture on the history of the string quartet at the Strand Bookstore in Manhattan. The lecture was augmented with a cellist, violist and two violinists who provided live examples on the spot, says Heaton, who lived in Beacon for seven years but moved in 2022 to Westchester to shorten her commute to Lincoln Center. Bringing an expansive ensemble from New York City that provides flexibility to mix and match presents a more varied performance than a soloist singing lieder and art songs. "This is such a great format," she says. "We worked hard putting together a taste of Opera 101." The Howland Cultural Center is located at 477 Main St. in Beacon. Opera for Kids will be performed at 1 p.m. on May 4. Tickets are $15 for adults and free for children. All ages are welcome, but it is recommended for ages 6 and older. The Met Chorus Artists concert is scheduled for 4 p.m. on May 4. Tickets are $35, or $10 for students ages 25 and younger. See howlandmusic.org/tickets for both shows.

The topic of this episode is, “Does Congress still suffer from Demosclerosis?"My guest is Jonathan Rauch, the author of the classic book, Demosclerosis: The Silent Killer of American Government (Times Books, 1994). Jonathan is a fellow at the Brookings Institution, and the author of numerous books, including The Constitution of Knowledge (Brookings Institution Press, 2021), and Kindly Inquisitors: The New Attacks on Free Thought (University of Chicago Press, 2014).I first read Demosclerosis nearly 30 years ago, when I was a graduate school student. I was rifling offerings outside the Strand Bookstore in Manhattan, and the book's title grabbed me. Once I cracked it, the writing got me hook, line, and sinker. Rauch had taken social scientific insights to explain the mounting federal government dysfunctionality. Today I welcome actor, filmmaker, playwright, and novelist Tim Blake Nelson to the show. Tim is one of the great character actors of our time. Like a lot of people, I first became aware of him in the Coen Bros film O Brother Where Art Thou. Tim's novel is called City of Blows and it just came out on Unnamed Press. It didn't click with me that Tim was actually the writer of this incredible book until I saw his picture on the promo materials. When I read the synopsis, I knew it was my kind of book. Black Diamond Queens, the second book from Maureen Mahon is an examination of African-American women in rock. The book is not only a fascinating study of their achievements, but also illustrates their wide influence in the genre. From Big Mama Thornton and her original version “Hound Dog” to girl group The Shirelles and of course, Tina Turner. Despite their contribution, these legends weren't always paid their dues, figuratively and/or financially. Black Diamond Queens is a beautiful celebration of the talent and struggles these women. Sam is an NYC-based comedian. He is a writer on Blind Date currently airing on Bravo TV. He has participated in some of the most prestigious showcases in the country. He was selected as a Stand-Up NBC Finalist, the network's nationwide talent search. The same year he was selected to perform at The Tonight Show Showcase, named Best of New Talent at the New York Comedy Festival, and performed at RuPaul's DragCon. He has been featured in the NY Times, Time Out, GQ, Vanity Fair, Buzzfeed, National Lampoon, The Independent, The Guardian, Metro UK, and his writing has been published in Chortle. Opening at the Strand Bookstore, in New York City, Una realizes how popular Trungpa Rinpoche continues to be. It gives her the impetus to tell her story. Traveling back to age two, when her memories in this life begin, Una and her mother visit her father in Puerto Rico, travel to New York, and end up in California, living in a 1955 Chevy. Una's mother finds Trungpa Rinpoche again and the two end up at Padma Jong, one of his new dharma centers in Mendocino County. When Trungpa Rinpoche forms Naropa Institute, Una and her mother travel to Boulder, Colorado for the first time, to sit at his feet and hear what he has to say.

This episode is a replay of the virtual launch event I did to release my debut novel OLIVE in America in March 2021! OLIVE is my debut novel about a group of four friends, with different ideas and expectations of motherhood. The novel begins with Olive having just broken up with her boyfriend of almost a decade in which he decides he’s ready for kids, and she is not. Her decision to be child-free impacts her friendships too as they navigate their 30s. The wonderful Strand Book Store put on this virtual event for me (one of my absolute favourite bookstores in New York) and one of my favourite multi-hyphenate writers Ann Friedman interviewed me! Ann is a previous Ctrl Alt Delete guest (number #271 if you’re interested).In this conversation we discuss why I wrote OLIVE, why I wanted to write about child-free-by-choice character, my writing process, some of the challenges and my writing inspirations.
