Energized from her coaching retreat, Jen shares with Pete five learnings from the three-day discourse between herself, the coaches, and their clients. Specifically, in this episode, the learnings that Jen and Pete talk about are: Know what hat you, as the coach, are wearing. Know what hat they, as the client, are wearing. Say less. Sort your thoughts into objective and subjective, before you say them out loud. Doing is much more powerful than talking about doing. More from us in your inbox. Subscribe to Box O' Goodies. Bean and Peat are once again joined by Davinia (Dee) Evans, having talked about Scott Lynch's The Lies Of Locke Lamora last time around. How she represents a new type of fantasy author; her own journey, from taking a copy of The Hobbit from the school library and having dreams of being published by Robert Jordan's publisher (Orbit), to the eventual publication of her Notorious Sorcerer trilogy.... with Orbit. Along the way how Dee's own Notorious Sorcerer evolved from fan fiction, being raised on British comedy such as Monty Python, The Goodies, and Fawlty Towers (despite growing up in the tropics), and how the fantasy market is shifting away from exploration and towards finding the fantastical at home.

Send us Fan MailShe's been a fine art major, a print designer, a Barbie packaging designer at Mattel, a surface pattern designer, an art licensing exhibitor, and, for the past 10 years, an artist coach. In this episode, we sit with Jeanetta Gonzales, Ilana's first art licensing mentor, for a conversation that goes way beyond business strategy. We're talking about the long, winding road of building a creative career, what it was actually like to exhibit at art licensing trade shows, and why the seeds you plant at a show might not sprout for years.Jeanetta also shares all about her brand new book series, Free Pass, four illustrated coupon books published with Chronicle that are essentially permission slips for creatives, workers, resters, and parents. The creativity book was born directly out of her coaching work after she noticed that the moment she gave an artist the green light, everything changed. If you've felt stuck in a creative funk, wondered if your winding career path was “wrong,” or needed someone to just give you permission to rest, this one's for you.All that and more when you listen to this episode:How Jeanetta went from UCLA fine art major to Barbie packaging designer at MattelStumbling into art licensing and what Surtex was (and why it mattered)Whether art licensing trade shows are still worth it, and what the long game really looks likeWhat it's actually like to design and work on a trade show booth The story behind her new book series, Free PassHow she illustrated 72 pieces in the middle of a cross-country moveWorking with ADHD: procrastination, pressure, and finally getting it doneWhy your environment has more impact on your creativity than you thinkBeing honest about being in a creative funk, and not rushing to fix itHer plans to rebrand for the first time in 10 years Connect with Jeanetta GonzalesWebsite: https://www.jeanettagonzales.com/ Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/nettdesigns Free Pass Book Series: https://www.jeanettagonzales.com/freepasscoupons Jeanetta select client work: NY Times, Pantone, Target, Michaels, Edible Arrangements, and Brumate.Mentioned in this episode:Free Pass, Jeanetta's 4-book seriesSurtex (art licensing trade show)National Stationery ShowLas Vegas Trade ShowUpper Limit Challenge (concept from The Big Leap)Connect with Katie & Ilana from GoodtypeGoodtype WebsiteGoodtype on InstagramGoodtype on YoutubeWe wrote a book! Episode 184: Some Of The Vinyl Goodies From 1969 Hello and welcome! It's another Tales Vinyl Tells, an excursion into the great album cuts of our vinyl records of the 60s & 70s. Today we're tuned into some of the 1969 releases that rocked and changed the consciousness of the world. Tommy, the Who's Rock Opera came out in 69. So did the Stones' Let It Bleed, Santana's first, The Stooges debuted with Iggy Pop and the first two Zeppelin LPs came out in that year. So did Abbey Road. And “The Band” LP, with Cripple Creek and The night they drove old dixie down. Yeh! It was a great musical year, 1969. I'm Brian Hallgren. I've been doing this podcast since December 2019 and the radio program since January of 2022. And here's today's episode, #184, exposing some of the Tales Vinyl Tells. Welcome to the camp. Thanks for listening today. My email is talesvinyltells@gmail.com. You can hear a Tales Vinyl Tells radio program when it streams live on RadioFreeNashville.org and here. We do that at 5 PM central time Wednesdays. The program can also be played and downloaded anytime at podbean.com, Apple podcasts, Google podcasts, iHeart podcasts, Player FM podcasts, Listen Notes podcasts and many other podcast places. And of course you can count on hearing the Tales on studiomillswellness.com/tales-vinyl-tells anytime.

Send a textWhat happens when a journalist from Venezuela becomes a self-taught designer, typeface foundry founder, and curator of one of the most ambitious graphic design exhibitions in recent memory? You get Lope Gutiérrez-Ruiz, and our conversation with him does not disappoint. Lope is a partner and project lead at In-House International, a design studio and typeface foundry. He's also a TED Fellow, a Knight Fellow at Stanford, and the curator behind One Hundred Points. In this episode, we dig into what it actually looks like to build a creative practice rooted in curiosity and systems–not just style. Lope shares his take on design rules (and whether you should bother learning them) and how his journalism background still shapes every creative decision he makes. We also get into the realities of working with nonprofits, font piracy, and how he pulled off a massive exhibition without taking a sabbatical. Inspired by another learning from his triathlon, Pete shares with Jen a training technique, and both of them noodle on what it might look like to work within Zone 2 (and not constantly overexerting in Zone 5). Specifically, in this episode Jen and Pete talk about: What are the five zones of energy and effort? Why is it important to take periods of rest? This week, Jen and Pete noodle on a mental framework in which they revisit and recommit, or revise, or replace, or remove the goals they've set for themselves this year (which leaves them feeling re-invigorated, re-energized, and re-inspired). Specifically, in this episode Jen and Pete talk about: How might we add and consider the context surrounding our goals? How might we reframe a pivot away from a certain goal as not a failure but a learning? What are some tactics to give ourselves more grace in the journey towards our goals? She was telling me a story about how she had gone to the East Coast of Florida to visit her family. She's from there and loves it. She wants to move back there, but there are a lot of “practical” things keeping her on the West Coast. “I told him that I just have 5 more years of my job before I can slow things down and maybe move back there and spend time with him,” she continued. I knew she and her 85 uncle were close. And when she told me what he said next, I could feel the weight in her heart. “I may not be here by then,” her uncle said with sadness. I saw her eyes tear up as her brain tried to make sense of it all. “That really hit me hard, Katie,” she said. “Have I just been living on Autopilot for all these years?” What does Living on Autopilot look like? Living on Autopilot means you're just kinda coasting through life. You're showing up and doing what you “should” do, or continuing to do life in a certain way because that's how you've always done it, or that's how it “should” be done, or that's how everyone else does it. We're told that this way of living is “safe” and “conventional” and even “normal.” We keep showing up to the job that doesn't fulfill us… We keep eating the same foods that don't nourish us… We tote our kids around to all the activities because we're supposed to… We slowly forget about our big dreams because they're not practical… And we fall into the habit of living a “good enough” life that's run on autopilot. The Scariest Part About Living on Autopilot The scariest part about living on Autopilot is not realizing that we are living on autopilot until it's too late. Well, technically, it's never too late, but you get my point. Autopilot living eats up our precious time here. And isn't the point to actually live our lives? How Do I Know If I'm Living My Life on Autopilot? Are you deeply in love with your life? Are you excited for the days ahead? Do you feel a sense of fulfillment and joy? If you answered yes, then congratulations! You are living an intentional life, building it brick by brick! It's a hard job, but a worthwhile one. :) If you answered no to any of these questions…then maybe it's worth considering that some parts of your life are on autopilot right now. How Do I Get Out of Autopilot Mode? Self-Awareness. Meditation is a free, simple tool to use to practice listening to your intuition. And your intuition will help you identify what feels off, unfulfilled or hungry for change. Try this guided meditation right now…just press play and let me do the guiding. ;) Living an Intentional Life Once you start unraveling the areas of your life that are on autopilot, you'll be free to create each piece of your life with intention. And this is where meditation can be used seamlessly in your life to help you stay deeply connected to yourself as you navigate your life every single day! If you want to learn a bit more about how powerful meditation can be to get you out of an autopilot life and into creating a life from intention, then get on the waitlist for the Meditate to Magic course…there are lots of goodies and deals that those on the waitlist are getting this week!
