Damian Kulash of OK Go discusses his evolution from punk music fan, working with Dischord records, and creating boundary-pushing music, vinyl packaging and viral videos Topics Include: New album "And The Adjacent Possible" available for streaming now. Discussion about physical media's role in OK Go's output. OK Go primarily known for videos that "live in the ether." Damian was into physical record packaging during college years. First record was Herbie Hancock's "Rockit," bought at Tower Records. Young Damian damaged the record trying to scratch like DJ. Later played with Herbie Hancock at Obama's 50th birthday party. Musical journey from hip-hop through Prince, Beatles, Led Zeppelin. DC punk scene was influential, with bands playing in cafeterias. Started Level Records at age 15,with funding from Dischord Records. Ian MacKaye lent teenager Damian money to start label. Level Records produced 7-inches and compilation CDs for friends' bands. College made running a record label difficult for Damian. Studied art semiotics at Brown University. Worked as NPR radio engineer and Photoshop retoucher after college. Indifferent to Napster's rise during OK Go's early days. Band finances operated like "roadrunner off the cliff" cartoon. Discussion about gift economy model working for the band. Belief that making things you love matters most, not success. Music sometimes gets overshadowed by video's visual impact. Videos gave OK Go longevity beyond typical radio-hit bands. New album theme explores Stuart Kaufman's "adjacent possible" concept. OK Go doesn't have unified sound; band is "like a mixtape." Treadmill video was originally made for "nerdiest fans" only. Videos aim to create real events that connect with viewers. Physical pressings of OK Go albums are costly in secondary market. New vinyl features elaborate pop-up sphere in custom packaging. Hidden track on second album deliberately blocked copy-protection software. Record label "Paracadute" means parachute in Italian. Ten-year album gap wasn't intentional; life and pandemic happened. Directed "The Beanie Bubble" film with his wife for Apple. Film directing different from making music videos; less adrenaline-driven. Video production typically takes 3-6 months from concept to completion. Some video ideas abandoned when technology made them commonplace. Ryan Allen, a multi-faceted musician from Detroit, Michigan, has been an active and influential figure in the music scene since the early 1990s. Allen has been a part of too many groups to mention, but here is a sampling: Destroy This Place, Friendly Foes, Red Shirt Brigade, Ryan + Jono, and Thunderbirds Are Now! Far from an exhaustive list, each of these bands showcased different facets of Allen's musical prowess and interests, ranging from indie and punk to hardcore and alternative rock In 2011, Allen launched "Ryan Allen & His Extra Arms." What began as a solo project has evolved into a full-fledged band, now simply known as Extra Arms. This project allowed Allen to explore a more personal and memoir-esque musical style, reminiscent of post-hardcore troubadours like Ted Leo, and Bob Mould Allen's music often reflects his personal life and experience, featuring songs about his family, friends, and his journey through music over the years. Allen has also been involved in the band BIG LIFE, a group of seasoned local musicians creating Melodic Hardcore music inspired by Dischord Records' "Revolution Summer" era. BIG LIFE's sound draws influence from bands like Dag Nasty, and Fugazi. Ryan Allen's career illustrates a dedication to evolving and experimenting within the realm of music, making him a distinctive and respected figure in Detroit's rich musical landscape. Well, we can now add writer to the list of things Ryan Allen excels at. In the Fall/Winter Edition of Remember the Lightning: A Guitar Pop Journal, Volume 2, Allen penned the piece “The Ties That Bind Hardcore Punk & Power Pop.” Ryan stopped by Thunderlove Studio recently to chat with Keith about the article and the whole of his music career. Their original intent was simply to release a single to document their recently defunct band, Teen Idles. However, the label has gone on to release music from more than 60 bands, with more than 160 albums over the last 25 years and counting. As musicians Ian and Jeff went on to form Minor Threat, who along with Bad Brains are credited in the early 80s with introducing the D.C. hardcore ethic to an audience well beyond Washington, D.C. In 1986, Ian formed Fugazi with Joe Lally, Brendan Canty and Guy Picciotto. Over 20+ years the band has released seven albums and toured the world extensively covering all fifty United States, Europe, Australia, South America, Japan and many points in between. Fugazi is self managed and maintains a policy of affordable access to their work through low record and ticket prices and all concerts are all-ages. In 2003 Fugazi decided to take an indefinite hiatus from recording and touring as young families and other priorities began to take center stage. Since 2001, Ian has played in The Evens, a duo with Amy Farina. The Evens revel in short-circuiting the conventions of rock music and perform mostly in non-traditional music spaces — libraries, art spaces, schools, theaters, etc. They have released two albums and have toured extensively in North America, Europe, South America, Australia, and New Zealand. Ian has also been taking on speaking engagements, delivering talks that take the form of informal Question and Answer sessions.

Franz Stahl, guitarist of seminal hardcore band Scream, helped shape the band's journey from its inception in 1979. Alongside drummer Kent Stacks(AKA Kent Stax), bassist Skeeter Enoch Thompson, and his brother Pete Stahl, Franz attended school in Bailey's Crossroads, Virginia, where they discovered the punk and new wave scene of Washington, D.C.  Influenced by the Bad Brains like many other DC punk bands, Scream's fusion of punk with rock and roll set them apart. Their collaboration with Ian MacKaye and Eddie Janney led to the recording of Dischord's first full-length album, Still Screaming, in 1982. Over the years, they experienced lineup changes, with Franz's friend Harley Davidson joining on second guitar, and eventually, a local drummer named Dave Grohl. Scream's legacy endures, with their latest album, DC Special, set to release in November of 2023 on Dischord Records.

Dr. T and the Truth Fairy welcome writer Seth Lorinczi to the show to talk about his writing focus on psychedelics, Jewish intergenerational trauma, and the punk scene of the eighties and nineties. Seth also shares insights from his new book, Fatherland, coming out in Fall 2023.Seth opens up about all the real life experiences that informed his new book; his marriage crisis, family trauma, how his father left Hungary after the Holocaust and the journey after. There were many disconnected moments of struggle and searching for truths throughout Seth's story. He found that psychedelic medicines and a connection to the punk scene gave him a much-needed creative outlet and lightness. The discussion Dr. T and the Truth Fairy have with Seth Lorinczi is honest, raw, and deeply interrogative of his father-son dynamic, what he views as the link between psychedelic healing and punk, the truths about the Holocaust confronted in his father's story, and what the journey through psychedelic therapy looks like. It's a powerful episode, not to be missed.“I mean, some people who've researched ayahuasca and DMT in particular, the active molecule suggests that those who drink it are essentially disconnected from time's forward flow. That time can sort of pool and eddy around you. And any of us who have worked with that medicine know that there is a sense of forward-looking and backwards-looking through the generations, connecting with those who came before, connecting with those who will come later. It's sort of like time has been suspended.” -  Seth LorincziAbout Seth Lorinczi:Born in Milwaukee, Wisconsin but raised in Washington, D.C., Seth Lorinczi is a writer and musician. In the ‘80s and ‘90s, he participated in the punk scene that centered largely around Dischord Records. In addition to writing for nonprofits and the music, food, and cannabis industries, Seth writes nonfiction. Born in NYC but spending his formative years in Washington DC, Chad Clark's passion for music was born when his dad dropped a pair of headphones on his son's head and introduced him to the Beatles. In the mid-90s, Clark formed the artsy, indie rock outfit Smart Went Crazy with Abram Goodrich and Hilary Soldati, signed with Dischord Records and released an EP and two full lengths - 1995's Now We're Even and 1997's Con Art. Even before Smart Went Crazy's ending, Clark was thinking about his next project, Beauty Pill, which he started with Goodrich in 2001 and continues through this day. With members coming and going over the last 20+ years, Beauty Pill's released two full lengths - 2004's The Unsustainable Lifestyle and 2015's Beauty Pill Describes Things As They Are - and a handful of EPs, most of which have been critically lauded. Earlier this year, Beauty Pill released a double album, Blue Period, consisting of their Dischord output - The Unsustainable Lifestyle and the You Are Right to Be Afraid EP - as well as previously unreleased outtakes and demos. On this episode, Beauty Pill members past (Ryan Nelson) and present (Erin Nelson), join Clark to talk about the last 25+ years of music.   Songs In This Episode: Intro - A Good Day by Smart Went Crazy 6:39 - Goodnight For Real by Beauty Pill Outro - Fugue State Companion by Beauty Pill   Support the podcast, join the DMO UNION at Patreon. Aquarium Drunkard - SIDECAR (TRANSMISSIONS) - Podcast

Our 2023 season is officially underway. This week on the show, Chad Clark of Beauty Pill. He and his bandmate Erin Nelson joined AD in March last year, and on January 20th, Ernest Jenning Record Co. releases Blue Period, a double LP compilation featuring music Clark recorded for the legendary punk label Dischord Records between 2003-2005—including the full-length LP The Unsustainable Lifestyle, the You Are Right To Be Afraid EP, and a whole slew of outtakes, demos, and rarities. When this music was originally released, fans accustomed to Clark's pioneering punk band Smart Went Crazy, early Beauty Pill, or Clark's work with Fugazi and The Dismemberment Plan, wasn't sure what to make of its art-pop ambitions, detours into jazz, and complex lyricism. Clark and Transmissions host Jason P. Woodbury get into all that, and along the way, they touch on his recurring health issues, race, mortality, what it feels like when critics dismiss your work, and much more. Thanks for checking out Transmissions. If you dig the show, please consider leaving a five star rating or a review—or just forwarding your favorite episodes to a friend. We're a part of the Talkhouse Podcast Network. Aquarium Drunkard is powered by its Patrons—if you'd like to become one, visit us on Patreon. Seth Lorinczi - Vile Cherubs - in conversation with David Eastaugh https://www.sethlorinczi.com Vile Cherubs blended the avant-garde of the '60s with the punk bluntness of the '80s. The group broke into the late-'80s D.C. punk club scene, eventually drawing the attention of Ian MacKaye and Dischord Records. They released one full-length with Dischord, Posthumous Relief, in 1990. A collection of demos from 1987-1988, The Man Who Has No Eats Has No Sweats, was released in 1993. Singer Tim Green went on to play guitar in Nation of Ulysses, while Seth Lorinczi later joined Circus Lupus as a bassist and Jesse Quitslund went onto play bass for the Capitol City Dusters. Green and Lorinczi later reunited in Evolution Revolution.
