Tools of Life is written and produced by Julie Ford of Julz of Life where we've been supporting parents and teens as they navigate the challenging richness of raising the next generation. This stage of life is full of our own "remember when" and "oh boy, here we go" moments that we can choose to either DREAD or RELISH. No stage of parenting should need to be endured. JOY is a choice and that's where we've started our continuing conversation: 7 Habits I've Adopted Since Choosing JOY! And the 4th of our habits is choosing ALL DAY everyday. Some call it course-correction – When I’m choosing fearful or judgmental thoughts, I can choose again. It's a simple but powerful process with some interesting twists. -------------------- On Tools of Life, we offer you something to ponder, something to practice, and something to play with. Here you go! Ponder: “Joy is a decision, a really brave one, about how you are going to respond to life.” — Wess Stafford. Practice: 3 steps - from Judgment Detox by Gabrielle Bernstein Notice (without further judgment). Forgive the limiting thought. Choose again. Choose a better feeling thought closer to love. Play with: When you're stuck in a fearful place or a limiting belief, you might want or need a deeper look at it. Look up Byron Katie’s THE WORK – and DO it – talk through it or WRITE it. Then SHARE it with a friend. It's very powerful for moving through blocks. -------------------- Resources: Judgment Detox by Gabrielle Bernstein. Grab a journal and check out this amazing book. She has a free Facebook reading group as well. Life changer! Don't just skim it… DO the work. You'll be grateful you did. Speaking of the work… Byron Katie's - "The Work." Linked here is an explanation from Byron herself. The short version is here: Question 1: Is it true? Question 2: Can you absolutely know it's true? Question 3: How do you react—what happens—when you believe that thought? Question 4: Who would you be without the thought? Turn the thought around! ------------------------------- About the "7 Habits I've Adopted Since Choosing JOY" series - After going through alife swamp, Julie learned a few lessons about climbing out of the muck and thriving. Each of these nuggets is a show in itself, so that's just what we're all about in this series! Buckle up for some perspective to help you get from "frustrated and frazzled" to "laughing and lovin it" faster. Tools of Life - where we bring enough levity and perspective to you on Friday that you love the weekend big time and make people wonder what on EARTH got into you by Monday. I love all my guests, and this week's is no exception. Shari Teigman is a whirlwind of straight-talking, powerhouse New York determination and grit. In this week's conversation we talk about her realisation that to live and thrive, she needed to break away from the traditional mother and matriarch roles handed down through her Modern Orthodox Jewish upbringing, and what it meant to do that in the community where she was raised.Shari still lives and mothers in the place where she grew up; she's founded her business, launched three podcasts, raises her two boys on her own and keeps exploring different ways to belong in this new, truer form of herself. Shari and I talk about the insidiousness of mothers being valued for being selfless, how living in the place you grew up can blind you to the structures that others impose upon you, and how damaging it is that we don't learn to trust ourselves from the outset. We talk about Byron Katie's The Work, which you can learn more about here, how important it is to choose the stories you believe, the importance of learning to be ok with yourself FIRST and foremost, how damaging it is to judge and compare ourselves to others, and so much more.I know I'll be listening over and over to this episode, and I can't wait to hear what you think of it. Make sure you visit us over in the free Facebook group here to continue the conversation about this episode. If you'd like to learn more about Shari and her work, you can find her here online, check out her Facebook profile or follow her on Instagram.

Today I am going to be very personal. It hits pretty close to home.  I am sharing something from my journal to help those who genuinely want to learn and do The Work.  This is a very open and vulnerable episode. On this journey of Me Being Me on my 50th episode, I am going to walk you through how to correctly, efficiently, and effectively use Byron Katie's The Work on a relationship that  I am still working through. Let me be very clear. The names have been changed to protect out of respect and love for those people.  I am going to read some statements today that are basically my judgements I wrote down.  To be very clear, my judgements about this person have nothing to do with this person.  These judgements exist in me. So, as you listen, you may think ill of John. Do NOT think it - it is not true. This is all part of the work of Byron Katie. Do I love John? Am I willing to become him? Am I willing to see it his way? I willing to see it the way he sees it? Am I willing to see it through his eyes? Am I willing to get myself out of the way for long enough and well enough to see a clear picture of how he sees it?This podcast is dedicated to that question - Am I willing to become you? It is part of my journey as Me Being Me to become Paid More to Be Me!  I invite you today to listen and look at your own life. Is there a relationship that could be better? Can you do The Work?Reach out to me if you need help or have questions at the MeBeingMe.Live on Instagram or Facebook or email mebeingmelive@gmail.com.  This journey is not an easy one, but being committed to doing the daily Work / Ladder / Scale will yield the fast growth in my own development.

Sam and Katie discuss the nature of reality and where pain and suffering fit in. They talk about living in the moment, free from your painful thoughts and beliefs, and do Byron Katie's The Work around Sam's recent heartbreak. more about Byron Katie via www.thework.com Byron Katie became severely depressed in her early thirties. For almost a decade she spiraled down into rage, self-loathing, and constant thoughts of suicide. For the last two years she was often unable to leave her bedroom. Then one morning in February 1986, she experienced a life-changing realization. There are various names for an experience like this. Katie calls it “waking up to reality.” In that instant, she says, I discovered that when I believed my thoughts, I suffered, but that when I didn't believe them, I didn't suffer, and that this is true for every human being. Freedom is as simple as that. I found that suffering is optional. I found a joy within me that has never disappeared, not for a single moment. That joy is in everyone, always. She realized that what had been causing her depression was not the world around her, but the beliefs she'd had about the world. Instead of hopelessly trying to change the world to match her thoughts about how it should be, she could question these thoughts and, by meeting reality as it is, experience unimaginable freedom and joy. As a result, a bedridden, suicidal woman was instantly filled with love for everything life brings. The Work, Katie's process of self-inquiry, didn't develop from this experience; she says that it woke up with her, as her, that February morning in 1986. The first people who did The Work reported that it had transformed their lives, and she soon began receiving invitations to teach the process publicly. Since 1986, she has brought The Work to millions of people across the world, at free public events, in prisons, hospitals, churches, corporations, universities, schools, at weekend workshops, at her amazing nine-day School for The Work, and through the Institute for The Work of Byron Katie. What can you do when you know you have thoughts that are limiting you, disempowering you, and making you feel like all around crap? You can start to challenge them. Because our thoughts are just that; only thoughts. They only have power to dictate our experience if we allow them to.Today I'm talking through a model that I find really useful from a woman called Byron Katie, called - The Work. I'll cover how you can apply her 4 questions to your thinking, to make you feel more confident, empowered and alive. Her questions (in my summarized form) are:Is it true? Can you absolutely know it is true? How do you feel when you believe that thought?Who are you without that thought? The four components of a turnaround thought:An alternative/opposing thoughtThat is likely just as true as the original thoughtThat makes you feel empoweredAnd that you can believeTo read more about Byron Katie's The Work model, visit her website: http://thework.com/en or you can find resources and links to certified facilitators here: http://thework.com/en/tools-do-work(please note: I am not certified in this work, this is merely an introduction to the concept). There is also an article on Oprah that demonstrates how the model is used: http://www.oprah.com/spirit/testing-the-work-of-byron-katieFor more information Kate or her Channel Your Chill program, head here: www.thrive.how See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
