The craft of filmmaking is as much about the soul as it is about the frame. In today's conversation, we sit down with Kansas Bowling, a maverick filmmaker who began charting her creative course at just 17 years old. As the first graduate of the Troma Institute for the Gifted, Kansas burst onto the scene with her debut feature, B.C. Butcher, a cavewoman slasher filmed on 16mm. From that bold beginning, her journey has only intensified, guided by a vision both rebellious and deeply personal.Kansas embodies the heart of artistic defiance, carving her path outside the confines of conventional education."I thought it would be easier to just make a movie than go to film school," she reflects, and her success vindicates her instincts. Her philosophy is one of doing: creating without overthinking, trusting her voice, and stepping into the arena without waiting for permission. Her work ethic shines through her portfolio, from feature films to over 20 music videos, all captured on her beloved 16mm film.Kansas opens a window into her creative process. For her, filmmaking is as much about confidence as it is about technical skill. "Directing is just telling people what you want to see. Everything else, you can learn along the way." This candid wisdom is refreshing, cutting through the mystique often associated with creative mastery. With humor and humility, she explains her preference for shooting on film, emphasizing its "timeless look" that digital can never replicate.Despite the beauty of her craft, Kansas has faced challenges that mirror the rawness of her stories. From navigating the loss of her Instagram account due to a controversial post, to fielding inappropriate offers as a female filmmaker, she moves forward with resilience. "People always send me horrible scripts where the whole thing is just a giant sex scene," she shares, laughing off the absurdity. Yet, she balances these experiences with genuine collaborations, such as her role in The Electra Complex, a project she describes as "the most well-written screenplay I've ever read."When asked about her influences, Kansas rattles off a list of cinematic gems: F for Fake by Orson Welles, Midnight Cowboy, and the Italian classic Don't Torture a Duckling. These films, she notes, have a unique authenticity—a quality she strives to infuse in her own work. For Kansas, filmmaking isn't about mimicking others; it's about harnessing inspiration while remaining true to her distinctive voice. As she wraps up production on her second feature, Kansas is also directing multiple music videos, preparing for a shoot in Miami, and starring in a major project. Her days are packed, yet her focus remains sharp. The secret to her productivity? She simply follows her passion. "If you see a film in your head, just go out and make it," she advises, encouraging budding creatives to trust their instincts and take action.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/indie-film-hustle-a-filmmaking-podcast--2664729/support.

This Podcast offers a pathway to continuing education via this CMEfy link: https://earnc.me/yhagvy In this episode, Dr. Amos Lane, a dedicated physician from West Virginia, shares how a life-threatening illness shifted his career and reshaped his personal perspective. Originally trained in emergency medicine, Dr. Lane's path took an unexpected turn when severe health complications led to a liver transplant. This experience prompted a reevaluation of his professional role and life priorities, ultimately leading him away from clinical emergency care. Dr. Lane describes the early onset of his health issues pre-COVID, where fatigue and other symptoms escalated amidst the pressures of the pandemic. Following a diagnosis revealing alarmingly high liver enzymes, he underwent extensive treatments and ultimately received a liver transplant in 2023. His connection to his living donor—a close friend from his hometown—adds a deeply personal dimension to his story, underscoring the strength of relationships formed in adversity. After his recovery, Dr. Lane encountered challenges reintegrating into the medical field, as immunosuppressive medications restricted his ability to practice emergency medicine as he once did. He reflects on his frustration and sense of loss, as well as his departure from hospital administration after a mismatch in vision for his role. This period of uncertainty led him to consider multiple paths, eventually guiding him toward detention medicine. In his new role within the prison system, Dr. Lane finds fulfillment in providing chronic care to an underserved population, while achieving a work-life balance critical for his own recovery and family life. -=+=-=+=-=+= Are you a doctor struggling to provide the best care for your patients while dealing with financial and caregiving matters out of the scope of your practice? Starting a nursing career is both exciting and challenging, especially in the fast-paced world of healthcare. New nurses often struggle as they transition from school to real-world practice, navigating complex systems and high demands. How can we improve nursing education to better support them? In this episode, I speak with Morgan Taylor, Chief Nursing Officer at Archer Review. Morgan shares insights into the challenges new nurses face, the structural issues within nursing education, opportunities for innovation in healthcare, and ways to better align incentives in the field. Don't miss out, listen now! --- Listen to the podcast here: Carving Your Own Path in Nursing with Morgan Taylor Welcome to Action's Antidotes, your antidote to the mindset that keeps you settling for less. Today, I want to talk to you about the many different ways in which we can go about carving your own path because I think sometimes people think about any pursuit and they think about the most common manifestation of it and they think the most common manifestation of carving their own path as being something along the lines of either starting your own business or doing something really, really wild, like going and living off the grid somewhere in, I don't know, Uganda, for the lack of a better place to think of, but there are plenty of different ways in which you can kind of discover where your path is going and discover how you can get to a place where you once again feel excited about the things that you once felt excited about.  ---   Today, my guest is Morgan Taylor and she is the chief nursing officer at Archer Review and chief nursing officer, I feel like a different C-blank-O title emerges every other week, so, yeah, Morgan, tell us a little bit about that.    Yeah, absolutely. Thanks for having me on today. I'm excited to talk. Yeah, chief nursing officer, to me, sounds totally normal, because I grew up as a nurse at big hospitals that always had a chief nursing officer. But, of course, if you don't work somewhere that has nurses, that's going to sound a little funky to you, right?    Yeah.    And really how I got to where I am is kind of funky. It was not a straightforward path at all, not something I had planned out or set my sights on a decade ago. I started out as a bedside nurse at Duke University in the Raleigh-Durham area here in North Carolina. I started working in a – we called it the children's resource unit. I went to all different pediatric areas of the hospital, spent a lot of time in the ICU, in the emergency department, and I loved it. I learned so much. It was a wonderful experience. And then COVID happened and things got a little dicey there. It was a big challenge, one that I'm proud to have played a part in, but what was most impactful for me and kind of what started me on this path where I ended up today now was I started seeing that the new nurses coming in to join us in this profession were very underprepared, and not to any fault of their own. They just didn't have the experience that they needed to get prior to coming and working in a level one trauma center taking care of very, very ill patients. So that got my wheels turning. I started to think maybe there's something I can do in kind of the education bubble, that's something people talk about. I started kind of looking for ways to dip my toes in the water, so to speak, see what's out there, and that was when I connected with the CEO, Karthik Koduru, of Archer Review. He was working on trying to put together a platform to really enable nursing education that was accessible and affordable and specifically targeted nurses getting ready to take their board exams. We call those exams the NCLEX and it's that last test you have to take before you're fully licensed, you're out there on your own actually caring for patients. And we had really poor pass rates. They were anywhere from about 80 to 87 percent,

André Brisson was working as a structural engineer when he decided to start his own engineering company. Like a great many entrepreneurs, André knew he needed to be able to do things his way. In this episode, André shares with business coaches Dan Sullivan and Shannon Waller how he's found freedom and business success on his entrepreneurial journey. Here's some of what you'll learn in this episode:How the company André worked for became a toxic environment for him. What helped André realize that he doesn't need anyone's permission. Why André's opinions aren't popular in bureaucracies or in politics.André's biggest challenges in the construction site field. An incredible resource available for entrepreneurs with ADHD. Show Notes: If you want to do things differently, you have to find ways of negotiating with people who oppose you. Entrepreneurial thinking can put other people off because it's unconventional. Non-entrepreneurs can only rationalize entrepreneurism. Entrepreneurism is about freedom, and money is one of the tools you have to have to gain more freedom. The two types of entrepreneurial freedom are freedom from and freedom to. Personality and behavioral profiles provide a common language. It's useful for people who are different to recognize that the world wasn't made with them in mind. Just because something's been done for a hundred years doesn't mean it's applicable right now. Instead of competing with what someone else is doing, innovate something new. People will show up if your message is about them. It's the check writer who determines whether you're correct. If you want to find people who are like you, you have to really know who you are.  Resources: Unique Ability® Casting Not Hiring by Dan Sullivan and Jeffrey Madoff The Unique EDGE® Workshops for young adults The Impulsive Thinker™ The Impulsive Thinker Podcast ADHD: A Hunter in a Farmer's World by Thom Hartmann The Positive Focus® The Impact Filter™

Brie recently joined Colossus (founded by Patrick O'Shaughnessy) as Chief Marketing Officer. Democrats and Republicans are using immigration as a political flashpoint, as we approach election day in November. Meanwhile, California has been on the front lines of the issue for decades, and it has taken some unique approaches to help those that have made the journey to make the Golden State their new home. Police have arrested a man they suspect started the Line Fire that's currently burning in the mountains of San Bernardino. Officials say that 34-year-old Justin Wayne Halstenberg of Norco ignited the fire on September 5th in Highland near Baseline Road. Prosecutors say he tried to set to other fires that same day. Meanwhile, crews in Southern California are continuing to battle the Airport Fire, which is now burning in both Orange and Riverside Counties. Since igniting on Monday, the wildfire has scorched more than 23,000 acres. It's only 8% contained as of this morning.   Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
