Mighty Blue On The Appalachian Trail: The Ultimate Mid-Life Crisis

Tom Bennett, or Porkie is today's guest. Tom had an epic adventure on the Long Trail in Vermont, sharing with us the family connection he has to the trail.               It wasn't a straightforward hike, with serious injury and recovery, plus dramatic floods punctuating his efforts over two years. He remained resilient and completed his mission after his various mishaps.                             Tim also wrote a blog of his journey for the Trek, which you can read here at Tim Bennett, Author at The Trek . He has now written a book about both his and his father's hikes, which will be available later in the year. When I get that link, I'll put it in future show notes. For now, you can visit his website, http://www.longtrailhiker.com/ and sign up to be notified when the book is available.                Ben Kaplan completed the lineup for the Hike the Good Hike cohort, as he talked about leading AMC winter hikes while finding solace in his solo outdoor adventures. Michael Neiman, who, along with Bruce Matson, brought us Platinum Blazing to the trail, is our guest this week. Michael thru-hiked the Appalachian Trail in 2018, and his new book tells that story–as a 98% true novel.                   Michael, or Sharkbait has been juggling a job, parenthood, and his writing to bring this book to publication, and it's a good read, with plenty of page turning moments.                   You can check out the book at his website, Hello Neiman, or on Amazon at Hello My Name is Sharkbait: A 2,000-Mile Adventure on the Appalachian Trail. OR you could follow him on Instagram at Michael Neiman (@helloneiman) • Instagram profile. He even appeared on Minnesota local TV promoting his book, here:Hello My Name is Sharkbait on Minnesota's Fox 9 Good Day - December 22, 2025                 Ezra Peterson, the last remaining member of the Hike the Good Hike cohort, shares his moving story of transitioning from a woman to a man, and he is feeding his joy of the outdoors by taking on a Fastest Known Time for a non-binary person in hiking the Superior Hiking Trail. He's quite self-deprecating in that there isn't currently a record in that category, but his refreshing attitude to a tricky subject shines through in our conversation.                               Finally today, the accountability blog takes us to within three weeks of my start on the Appalachian Trail. I've got everything I need, plus a few things I don't need, but I still haven't packed and tried out my darn pack!! If you feel stuck in your calling, this episode is for you. In my last episode, I shared how God used neuroscience to get me unstuck in my calling. But before I could move forward, before I could take bold steps, before I could activate what God was asking me to build… I had to get clear. In this episode, I'm breaking down why clarity is the first step to walking in God's calling for your life. So many Christian women think they have a discipline problem. They believe they just need more motivation, more willpower, or more consistency. But after years of coaching women through identity work, brain-based behavior change, and biblical mindset transformation, I've learned this: You're not stuck because you're lazy. You're stuck because you're unclear. We're talking about: How neuroscience impacts decision-making and calling Why your brain cannot move toward what it cannot see The connection between faith and clarity How to discern God's will without overthinking The hidden belief that desire is sinful (and why that belief keeps you stuck) The three types of clarity every woman needs before she can move forward If you've been praying about your purpose, second-guessing your next step, or circling the same decision over and over, this episode will help you understand what's actually happening in your brain and your spirit. Clarity is not a personality trait. It's a skill. And discernment can be strengthened. If you're ready to stop circling and start moving, I created a space specifically for this first step. ✨ Join me inside The Discernment Room A faith-based, brain-based monthly membership focused on clarity, discernment, identity, and direction. Inside, we untangle fear from wisdom, reconnect you to your desires without shame, and help you define your next faithful step. #338: Every company adding AI coding tools runs into the same wall. Developers produce more code, but features don't ship any faster. The bottleneck just slides downstream -- to QA, to security, to legal, to whoever comes next in the pipeline. And the team that got faster? They don't even realize the people upstream could be feeding them more work. Viktor's take: the fastest possible setup is one person carrying a feature from idea to production. Not one person doing everything alone -- a system designed so nobody waits. Tests run in CI. Deployments happen through Argo CD. Security scanning is automated. There's a real difference between wiring up a light switch and hiring a butler to flip it for you. None of this is new. The same thing happened with punch cards, client-server, cloud, Kubernetes. One group adopts the new thing, everyone else says it doesn't apply to them, and the market eventually forces their hand. Meanwhile, every team in every company says they'd love to change if only the rest of the organization would get on board. Every team says this. Mighty Blue On The Appalachian Trail: The Ultimate Mid-Life Crisis

We welcome Rob Diamond to the show today. I met Rob in 2024 in Hot Springs, when we went and tried to help out after Hurricane Helene. Rob told me then that he was planning on a 2025 thru-hike, so I asked him then to follow up with me once he was done.                     Rob's hike didn't turn out as he had expected, yet he battled through innumerable obstacles as he made his way to Katahdin, eventually summiting on his intended summit date of 9/11.                               On the way, Rob raised awareness of the scourge of suicide among military and first responders by carrying dog tags to represent those who die by suicide. It was a deeply personal mission, and Rob fulfilled it in a caring way. You can check out more about Rob on his YouTube channel at DogTag hiking the AT. There is even a terrific little video and song about Kyle's Trail that tracked one of the special dog tags. Check this out. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=We85_ujD7MY                 We've met most of our Hike the Good Hike cohort, and this week, single mother Tristen Murphy shares her emotional story. Tristen is hiking the John Muir Trail later in the year. We hope she has a blast!                                         In my accountability blog, I share news of my pre-hike check up with my Doctor. He gave me the green light! In this Valentine's Day episode, Scott reflects on the Buddhist monks who recently completed their 2,300-mile peace walk to Washington, D.C., drawing connections between walking meditation, pilgrimage, and the true nature of love. He explores how love is primarily a decision and practice rather than just a feeling, using 1 Corinthians 13 as a guide to understand love as patience, kindness, and endurance. Scott shares insights from his retreats at Magnolia Grove Monastery in the tradition of Thich Nhat Hanh, emphasizing that sustaining long-term relationships—whether marriages, friendships, or commitments to justice—requires showing up one step at a time, even when feelings waver. This episode reframes Valentine's Day as an opportunity to practice love as a sustained commitment rather than momentary emotion.

If you're just getting here, welcome to First Reformed Church. Today is truly a blessing as Scouts, leaders, and families gather for Scout Sunday — a service that weaves jokes about knot-tying and Lions Club uniforms into a larger story about trust, service, and the light of Christ. Through a candid, heartfelt message the pastor compares faith to hiking with a compass: you may not see the whole path, but you follow the One who knows the way. Anecdotes — a lost pair of keys found at customer service, the honest confession of not making it past knot-tying, and the painful work of forgiving a child's bully — turn everyday moments into invitations to trust delays, practice patience, and live faith in action. The sermon culminates in a simple challenge: one random act of kindness. As the congregation brings the light of Christ into the world, listeners are asked to be prepared — to serve, forgive, and build a life on the rock of Jesus' love — carrying this Scout Sunday message into family, community, and everyday choices.

Olympic Gold MedalistThe world of sports I find fascinating to watch! Years of discipline, conditioning, travel, competitions, etc. all go into building a winning athlete & team. Their stories behind the World Championships, Team M.V.P.'s & Gold are even more so. Can an orphan from an abusive childhood, shuffled from foster home to home, even living on the streets, low self-esteem go on to be a winner in life? It starts with the stories about you have in your mind. You have to see it, speak it, mentor with & surround yourself & your environment to condition YOU for victory! What an eye opener to hear about life after the games from one of my friends  Olympic Gold Medalist Dana Hee. She is grateful to God for her victories. Dana may be a familiar face, not only from winning the "Gold" bunot only from winning the "Gold" but from television & movies like Mortal Combat, Charlie's Angels, Lethal Weapon & many more.  Dana Lynn Hee is an Olympic Gold Medalist and is currently a Hollywood film and television actress, as well as one of an award winning stuntwomen in the entertainment industry. . She has also doubled for Hollywood's top actresses': Nicole Kidman, Uma Thurman, Gwynneth Paltrow, Renee Russo, and Jennifer Garner. She also a noted writer, lecturer and television color commentator, and has an extensive background as a speaker to Fortune 500 companies. It's an understatement to say that Dana's childhood was hard. The child of divorced, alcoholic parents, she endured abuse, abandonment, and despair. The years of being passed back and forth between an orphanage, suicidal family members, halfway houses, a commune, government shelter, and finally a foster home, took their tole. Dana grew up to be a young woman with little self-esteem or self-confidence, and a huge fear of failure. To her, nothing seemed possible. It was as if the two words, 'I can't' were programmed into her mind, and she struggled to escape a lifelong habit of running from her fears. Dana looked within herself for strength and determined to make a change. Armed with an ounce of courage, and a glimpse of hope, she set out to make a dream of hers come true. Through the agonizing, against-the-odds process of this struggle, she made the transformation from a shy, under-achieving, below-average young woman to an Olympic Gold Medalist with a new sense of self-esteem, and, finally, some hope for the future. Her story of how this happened - and the lessons you can take from it - are enough to inspire the most discouraged soul. But Dana didn't stop there. She started accepting speaking engagements, then graduated to keynote speeches. She shifted from martial arts, to modeling, and then acting, before setting her sights on becoming a top Hollywood stuntwoman in the movie industry. If this sounds easy, it wasn't. To this day, Dana battles self-doubts whose roots extend back to her youth. But she never quits. She competes successfully in the world's most challenging industries.Dana's autobiography, One Step with Courage: The Story of My Life From Olympic Gold Medalist to Hollywood Stuntwoman, was released in May 2020. You're not alone—and it's not your fault. There's a neurological reason your brain keeps you stuck in reactive mode, and in this video, I show you exactly how to shift into intentional, confident parenting. You'll discover what reactive parenting actually looks like (and why it's not bad parenting), the hidden neurological cost of chronic reactivity on you and your child, why inconsistent responses create anxiety in children, the exact 5 C's framework that transforms chaos into calm confidence, how to plan your responses during calm moments instead of crisis moments, and the one practice that retrains your brain to default to intention instead of reaction. This isn't about being perfect—it's about being purposeful. When you parent with intention instead of desperation, your child gets the best version of you. #IntentionalParenting #ParentingPsychology #5Cs #CalmParenting #parentingconfidence  New to my podcast?  I'm Dr. Lindsay Emmerson, a clinical psychologist and Mom of 4, and I help parents find that sweet spot between support and structure that psychology research tells us is best for families now and best for our kids in the future. ------------------------------------------- Let's connect! Mighty Blue On The Appalachian Trail: The Ultimate Mid-Life Crisis

This week, Tony Roddy joins the podcast. Tony walked across America in 2015, vowing to do one of the long-distance American trails ten years later. His original choice was the CDT, but a last-minute change took him to the Appalachian Trail, where he relished his experience.                                   Tony used his time on the AT to raise funds for autism, an affliction close to home in his family. He also raised funds for the Make A Wish Foundation on his walk across America ten years ago.                     You can see more of Tony on his YouTube channel at https://youtu.be/xCmVyyYpxDw , a magazine article at https://vue-magazine.dcatalog.com/v/July-2025/?page=1, and his blog at https://vue-magazine.dcatalog.com/v/July-2025/?page=1 .                     In our Hike the Good Hike cohort this week, Colby Park shares his story and his upcoming Colorado Trail thru-hike later in the year. In our annual check-in with renowned mastering engineer Kevin Gray, he reflects on a very busy 2025 that included his Rhino High Fidelity versions of Fleetwood Mac and Lindsey Buckingham and Stevie Nicks' long-out-of-print Buckingham Nicks. How did Gray and fellow mastering engineer Chris Bellman feel about Rhino releasing separate versions of Buckingham Nicks mastered by each of them? Gray also discusses the Rhino High Fidelity John Coltrane: 1960-1964 Mono box, for which he revisited some albums he'd previously mastered in stereo. Gray's RHF version of T. Rex's Electric Warrior followed the label's reel-to-reel tape release of that album—which should sound better? Of course, we had to address the hullabaloo sparked by Gray's comments on Caropop a year ago criticizing the One Step pressing process. Was he surprised? Does he feel vindicated? Other topics covered: Gray's Blue Note Tone Poet work with producer Joe Harley; the jazz albums Gray is recording and releasing on his Cohearent Records label. What's in store for 2026?

Mighty Blue On The Appalachian Trail: The Ultimate Mid-Life Crisis

The self-deprecating James Kinch is on the show today, claiming the title of the "Fattest Known Time" on the Appalachian Trail, having twice thru-hiked the trail, starting at well over 300lbs each time.                         James has published his journal of the hike, and he serves as an inspiration to those who convince themselves that they can't do this hike for many reasons, one of which is often their weight. James just got on with it and made it to Katahdin each time.           You can check out his book at Fat Man Walking: 330 Pounds and 2200 Miles on the Appalachian Trail and read his blog on Substack at Middle-class Homeless | James Kinch | Substack.         This week on my accountability blog, I log further physical and gear progress as the year draws to a close. I used my hike last year on the South West Coast Path in the UK to help raise money for my absolute favorite charity, Parenting Matters, on whose board I've been privileged to serve for over a decade. You can learn more about the hike and the organization–and donate–by visiting Hike with Steve - Empowering Parents, One Step at a Time | Parenting Matters %. I hope you want to support this critical mission. Don't forget. Our entire series of videos from our Woods Hole Weekend in 2022 is now FREE and available at my YouTube page at Woods Hole Weekend - Trailer There, you'll find all sorts of tips and tricks that our guests took away from the weekend that helped them with their own hikes this year. Check it out. I often ask listeners for ideas on who to interview, and I'm sure several of you say, "I could do that. I've got an awesome story to tell." You're the person we need to hear from. If you'd like to be interviewed on the podcast, just register as a guest on the link below, and I'll be in touch. Come on the show! We meet Jesse Cody and Mike Rose today, and hear about their non-profit, Hike the Good Hike, an organization committed to enhance mental wellness through nature. They have partnered with several well-known outdoor brands to provide a path for a disparate cohort of people taking on US hikes in 2026. Jesse and Mike value the stories that hikers tell and this podcast will help tell some of those stories as we meet most, if not all, of the 2026 cohort in the coming weeks. I encourage you all to find out more about this deserving organization at their website, Hike The Good Hike and, should you wish to donate to the cause, you can do so here. Give Back with HTGH Also today, we meet Max Kiel from Hyperlite Mountain Gear, as he shares his knowledge about the four packs I wanted to learn about. I had my clear preference coming into the conversation, and he clarified my thinking. Here's the pack I chose. Finally today, my accountability blog records the hiatus I had in my training before picking up once more, earlier this week. I've also got gear, food and transportation issues to share with you all. I used my hike last year on the South West Coast Path in the UK to help raise money for my absolute favorite charity, Parenting Matters, on whose board I've been privileged to serve for over a decade. Mighty Blue On The Appalachian Trail: The Ultimate Mid-Life Crisis

Emily Manzon, or Tic Tac, is our guest this week. Emily was looking for an epic way to celebrate her 40th birthday this year, so the Appalachian Trail certainly checked that box. Along the way, Emily gained a respect for the trail and the impact it had upon her, using mantras to reflect her attitude along the way. Missing 200 miles partway through, she could have been content as a 2,000-miler, yet returned to the trail for a more solitary experience as she filled in those miles, heading south. Also this week, I welcomed Dan Durston from Durston Gear to help me with my tent choice for next year's hike. Dan answered all my questions, and I settled on this little beauty below. I'm so looking forward to using the X-Dome 2 next March. In my accountability blog, I share a bit of bad news on the physical prep front, while explaining why I chose the X-Dome 2 as my tent for 2026. I used my hike last year on the South West Coast Path in the UK to help raise money for my absolute favorite charity, Parenting Matters, on whose board I've been privileged to serve for over a decade. Tom Margaria, a retired FDNY firefighter, set out on January 1st from Key West to hike the 5700 mile Eastern Continental Trail. On the way, Tom met up with–and joined–the "Over the Hill Gang," the group including Dave Santi, one of my Mighty Blue Class of 25 this year. Tom, a man of deep faith, would ask people he met along the way how he could pray for them. This kind request came with a variety of answers, though Tom always saw the positives. He made it to the end, and reflects upon his mammoth journey with Steve. Also on the show today, is Tayson Whittaker, owner of Outdoor Vitals, an interesting gear company with an impressive business model and an equally impressive boss. Check out their website at https://outdoorvitals.com/ Finally, we hear the latest entry in my accountability blog, with big decisions being made over gear.
