Mighty Blue On The Appalachian Trail: The Ultimate Mid-Life Crisis
Savannah Schuring, or Snazzy Cat, took on an Appalachian Trail thru-hike–which she completed in a remarkable three months–as her graduate thesis. On the way, she was interviewing hikers as to their motivations to be out on the trail and learned so much from them, and about herself, with some fascinating conclusions. Savannah always loved the outdoors and, indeed, was a long-distance runner, but she came to love long hikes and completed her Triple Crown. Her new book, Between the Miles, is available on Amazon at https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0G3MCZS73 . You can also check out her website at http://savannahschuring.com , while you can connect with her on social media at https://www.instagram.com/direct/t/117946462927501/, or at https://www.instagram.com/direct/t/17846517893892959/ Our Hike the Good Hike member this week is Jim Wellman, who, like Steve, is attempting an Appalachian Trail thru-hike this year, starting about a month after Steve. Jim is open about his personal mental health struggles, and hope to reach others in a similar situation. You can follow Jim on several social media platforms on Instagram at https://www.instagram.com/jimsonanotheradventure/ and on Facebook at https://www.facebook.com/jimwellmanPADI. He also has a YouTube channel, which you can find here, https://www.youtube.com/@jimwellman76310 Finally, our Accountability Blog brings us up to date with the preparations for my own hike on the Appalachian Trail next month. I used my hike in 2024 on the South West Coast Path in the UK to help raise money for my absolute favorite charity, Parenting Matters, on whose board I've been privileged to serve for over a decade. In this deeply human and grounding conversation, guest host Sana sits down with Ryan Reichert to explore the concept of Protector Development—the inner armor we build to survive pain, trauma, and relentless life challenges. From childhood adversity and military service to addiction recovery, divorce, and rebuilding life from the ground up, Ryan shares how survival mode shapes our identity and how healing begins when we allow ourselves to ask for help. This episode is for anyone who feels stuck in a valley, questioning their past decisions, their worth, or their future. Ryan reminds us that progress doesn't come from massive leaps, but from small, intentional steps—just 1% better each day. A powerful reminder that strength is not about never breaking, but about learning how to bend, heal, and rediscover purpose. About the Guest: Ryan Reichert is a U.S. Army veteran with 23 years of service, a recovering alcoholic, author, speaker, and founder of Our Protector Development. Through his books, coaching, and courses, Ryan helps individuals turn pain into purpose, survival into service, and brokenness into growth. This week, Tony Roddy joins the podcast. Tony walked across America in 2015, vowing to do one of the long-distance American trails ten years later. His original choice was the CDT, but a last-minute change took him to the Appalachian Trail, where he relished his experience. Tony used his time on the AT to raise funds for autism, an affliction close to home in his family. He also raised funds for the Make A Wish Foundation on his walk across America ten years ago. You can see more of Tony on his YouTube channel at https://youtu.be/xCmVyyYpxDw , a magazine article at https://vue-magazine.dcatalog.com/v/July-2025/?page=1, and his blog at https://vue-magazine.dcatalog.com/v/July-2025/?page=1 . In our Hike the Good Hike cohort this week, Colby Park shares his story and his upcoming Colorado Trail thru-hike later in the year. He was self-deprecating about his YouTube channel in our conversation, but you can check it out here. https://youtube.com/@colbyonthetrail?si=CxewWH8BFNnJdzwg Finally, the accountability blog continued my training and gear journey, with the major new item this week being a 5-pack of underpants!! In our annual check-in with renowned mastering engineer Kevin Gray, he reflects on a very busy 2025 that included his Rhino High Fidelity versions of Fleetwood Mac and Lindsey Buckingham and Stevie Nicks' long-out-of-print Buckingham Nicks. How did Gray and fellow mastering engineer Chris Bellman feel about Rhino releasing separate versions of Buckingham Nicks mastered by each of them? Gray also discusses the Rhino High Fidelity John Coltrane: 1960-1964 Mono box, for which he revisited some albums he'd previously mastered in stereo. Gray's RHF version of T. Rex's Electric Warrior followed the label's reel-to-reel tape release of that album—which should sound better? Of course, we had to address the hullabaloo sparked by Gray's comments on Caropop a year ago criticizing the One Step pressing process. Was he surprised? Does he feel vindicated? Other topics covered: Gray's Blue Note Tone Poet work with producer Joe Harley; the jazz albums Gray is recording and releasing on his Cohearent Records label. What's in store for 2026?

We meet a member of the Class of 2012 this week, who happens also to be a member of this years class of 2026. In fact, Todd Sears is starting the day after I start, in March this year. He had a long career in military intelligence, and brings a military discipline to his hike, both back in 2012 and in his plans for this year. I should be meeting him very early on as he will doubtless breeze past me at speed. You can read about his earlier hike from a blog that he wrote; Nor'easter's 2012 Appalachian Trail Journal : March 20, 2011 : Trail Journals, Backpacking and Hiking Journals. To compare his hiking and his writing back then, you should check out the Tek, as Todd is one of their trail correspondents this year; NorEaster, Author at The Trek We start our season of Hike the Good Hike participants for 2026 with Elizabeth Thompson, who has endured both domestic abuse and cancer in recent years. Mitch Easter and Don Dixon, accomplished producers and performers on their own, came together to produce one of rock's greatest debut albums, R.E.M.'s Murmur. That 1983 classic plus the preceding, Easter-produced EP, Chronic Town, have gotten the all-analog, One Step treatment in a numbered, limited-edition vinyl release from Interscope-Capitol's Definitive Sound Series. We reunited Easter and Dixon to discuss the making of Murmur plus the follow-up they produced, Reckoning. What did they each bring to the process? Why does one of them consider Murmur to be the Dark Side of the Moon of the New Wave era? What had changed by the time they recorded Reckoning? Easter also talks about working again with R.E.M. guitarist Peter Buck and bassist Mike Mills on the latest Baseball Project album, and Easter and Dixon offer details about Murmur that even this longtime R.E.M. fanatic found revelatory. (You'll never hear “Radio Free Europe” or “Perfect Circle” in the same way.)

For Belinda Coker, that moment didn't lead to reinvention seminars or vision boards — it led her into the rainforest, onto long trails, and eventually across continents. The self-deprecating James Kinch is on the show today, claiming the title of the "Fattest Known Time" on the Appalachian Trail, having twice thru-hiked the trail, starting at well over 300lbs each time. James has published his journal of the hike, and he serves as an inspiration to those who convince themselves that they can't do this hike for many reasons, one of which is often their weight. James just got on with it and made it to Katahdin each time. We meet Jesse Cody and Mike Rose today, and hear about their non-profit, Hike the Good Hike, an organization committed to enhance mental wellness through nature. They have partnered with several well-known outdoor brands to provide a path for a disparate cohort of people taking on US hikes in 2026. Jesse and Mike value the stories that hikers tell and this podcast will help tell some of those stories as we meet most, if not all, of the 2026 cohort in the coming weeks. I encourage you all to find out more about this deserving organization at their website, Hike The Good Hike and, should you wish to donate to the cause, you can do so here. Give Back with HTGH Also today, we meet Max Kiel from Hyperlite Mountain Gear, as he shares his knowledge about the four packs I wanted to learn about. I had my clear preference coming into the conversation, and he clarified my thinking. Here's the pack I chose. Faith means stepping forward without seeing the whole path—trusting God to reveal each step in His time.
You probably know Jordin Sparks from generational bangers like “No Air,” “One Step at a Time” and “Battlefield.” Or as the youngest winner in American Idol history. Or from her many show business accolades. But before Jordin became a certified pop princess, Simone knew her as just…a normal teenage girl. Today on the podcast, these two old friends reconnect to talk about the whirlwind Jordin has experienced in life, love and career since they first met two decades ago at summer camp. Jordin opens up about coming of age in the spotlight, the best wisdom she received from Whitney Houston, and how her most famous pop hit almost didn’t happen. Mighty Blue On The Appalachian Trail: The Ultimate Mid-Life Crisis
Emily Manzon, or Tic Tac, is our guest this week. Emily was looking for an epic way to celebrate her 40th birthday this year, so the Appalachian Trail certainly checked that box. Along the way, Emily gained a respect for the trail and the impact it had upon her, using mantras to reflect her attitude along the way. Missing 200 miles partway through, she could have been content as a 2,000-miler, yet returned to the trail for a more solitary experience as she filled in those miles, heading south. Also this week, I welcomed Dan Durston from Durston Gear to help me with my tent choice for next year's hike. Dan answered all my questions, and I settled on this little beauty below. I'm so looking forward to using the X-Dome 2 next March. In my accountability blog, I share a bit of bad news on the physical prep front, while explaining why I chose the X-Dome 2 as my tent for 2026. I used my hike last year on the South West Coast Path in the UK to help raise money for my absolute favorite charity, Parenting Matters, on whose board I've been privileged to serve for over a decade. Kings of Anglia - Ipswich Town podcast from the EADT and Ipswich Star
Ross Halls and Alex Jones sit down at their Premier Inn to reflect on Ipswich Town's 2-1 defeat to Oxford United. The boys discuss the game, where Leif Davis' fine finish cancelled out Mark Harris' opener after Azor Matusiwa's mistake. However, former Norwich City man Przemysław Płacheta had the last laugh, scoring a quick counter to win the match for the U's. What went wrong for Town, and why do they continue to struggle against low blocks? There's a discussion around their current form and league position before looking ahead to Blackburn Rovers on Tuesday night. There's also a chat about the matchday experience at the Kassam Stadium, including a unique lights show and sharing a pie with a former England captain. Mighty Blue On The Appalachian Trail: The Ultimate Mid-Life Crisis
Tom Margaria, a retired FDNY firefighter, set out on January 1st from Key West to hike the 5700 mile Eastern Continental Trail. On the way, Tom met up with–and joined–the "Over the Hill Gang," the group including Dave Santi, one of my Mighty Blue Class of 25 this year. Tom, a man of deep faith, would ask people he met along the way how he could pray for them. This kind request came with a variety of answers, though Tom always saw the positives. He made it to the end, and reflects upon his mammoth journey with Steve. Also on the show today, is Tayson Whittaker, owner of Outdoor Vitals, an interesting gear company with an impressive business model and an equally impressive boss. Check out their website at https://outdoorvitals.com/ Finally, we hear the latest entry in my accountability blog, with big decisions being made over gear. Mighty Blue On The Appalachian Trail: The Ultimate Mid-Life Crisis
We meet a young New Hampshire guy today who had never hiked in New Hampshire prior to his Appalachian Trail thru-hike this year. Galloway Johnson had dreamed about the AT for five years and made it a reality this year. He didn't enjoy those early days, finding it tougher than he had imagined and carrying on almost to spite the trail!! But he made it to the end and came on the show to share his story, telling me that despite vowing never to hike again, he is considering the PCT next year. We have another report on my own progress in my accountability blog. I'm afraid it isn't as positive as I had hoped, though I am resolved to keep going and keep preparing for my upcoming third AT thru-hike. In this episode, Michal Renee' gets raw about the truth most high-functioning Christian women never say out loud:Your healing is often hidden inside your movement. Not the “do more” kind of movement…but the obedience movement — the steps you take when you don't feel worthy, don't feel ready, and don't feel qualified.Michal reflects on how God used her steps — the podcast, the prayers, the quiet yeses — to heal her through loss, rebuild her confidence, and reveal her impact through unexpected testimonies. You'll hear:How moving before you feel valuable reveals your value Why not starting is a silent loss to the people you're assigned toThe testimonies that carried Michal through heartbreak, grief, and transitionHow God attaches healing, clarity, and purpose to actionWhy obedience unlocks transformationThis episode is a reminder that your steps carry power — and somebody's breakthrough is tied to your movement.

It's just me, MJ, on the mic today. I wanted to take a moment to share where life has taken us lately. From how this podcast started — telling our love story and all the funny, messy, beautiful moments — to where things are now as we take baby steps into something new. I talk about what this change has been like, how Shams is doing, and how we're framing it all as a new beginning. It's honest, a little emotional, but filled with hope. This week we discuss changing the outcome of your health with nutrition & exercise. Our guest today is Dr. James Thompson, the author of Fearless Wellness and a passionate advocate for transformational change. He completed medical training 35 years ago and has dedicated my career to empowering others to live healthier, more fulfilling lives. He experienced a life-changing event in 2012 and participated in a 21-day Daniel Fast with my church community. Though the three-week diet, equivalent to a whole food plant-based diet, was intended to emphasize prayer, the impact of the food intrigued him. By the end of the second week, he had more energy, fewer joint aches, more mental clarity, better sleep, and lower blood pressure. He surmised the benefits were mainly from consuming real food and omitting processed food. He decided to take a year-long certification course in integrative holistic nutrition which was the start of his transformation to a whole food plant-based lifestyle. His training course, combined with a decade of studying nutrition science, love of animals, and concerns about climate change, has led me to the current space where he resides, a vegan. Here is the basic outline & links to his Blog and his new book : "FEARLESS Wellness: Transform Your Life, One Step at a Time" F – Food: Embrace plant-based eating E – Exercise: Stay active regularly A – Avoid toxins: Eliminate harmful habits (e.g., tobacco) R – Restorative sleep: Prioritize quality rest L – Lessen stress: Manage and reduce daily pressures E – Engage your mind: Stimulate mental growth S – Social energy: Cultivate empathy and connections S – Spiritual connectivity: Foster a sense of purpose and belonging
In this conversation, Marshall and Nick discuss the current trend of individuals in the automotive industry expressing pride in not attending events like SEMA. They emphasize the importance of personal choice in deciding whether to attend such events, arguing that there is no right or wrong answer. The discussion highlights the need for individuals to focus on their own business needs rather than conforming to industry expectations.Choosing the right pads for a one step correction out of our lineup was a large topic. Lisa Laidlow came to the trail when she became an empty-nester. She had always been an outdoor girl–often along with her father–yet it was only fairly recently that she returned to hiking and discovered the idea of a thru-hike. As a black woman on the trail, she was embraced by hikers, though had a few uncomfortable encounters along the way. Despite these rare occasions, Lisa is a strong advocate of getting people of whatever color into the woods and on trails. You can follow Lisa on various social media platforms; on Facebook at Breathe:AdventuresoftheSoul | Baltimore MD , on Instagram at Lisa Laidlow (@breathe_adventuresofthesoul) , and on her YouTube channel at Breathe:Adventures of The Soul(HighViz) . James Dalberto, or Nomad, joins the podcast today. James has been an RV'er for the past few years, earning a living as a “starving artist” (his words) all over the country. This year, he decided to mix it up a bit and headed out onto the Appalachian Trail for a thru-hike. On the way, he fell back in love with the hiking community he discovered last year, and even found time to provide his fellow hikers with some trail magic of his own. We meet an unusual hiker this week. Ken Posner has been a long-distance runner and hiker over the years, yet he has gradually morphed into a barefoot runner and hiker. Ken and I discuss this–to me–bizarre footwear choice, and he makes a compelling case for the advantages of barefoot walking. Ken has also taken on the fascinating project of “The Grid” in New York's Catskill Mountains, whereby he hikes each of over 30 mountains in every month of the year. This entails over 400 ascents, and the ability to see those mountains in changing weather and terrain as the year develops. Ken has written a terrific book about his pursuit of “The Grid,” which you can find here at Chasing the Grid: An Ultrarunner's Physical and Spiritual Journey in Pursuit of the Ultimate Mountain Challenge . You can learn more about Ken and his barefoot walking at his website, Barefoot Ken and the Long Brown Path . You'll find the donate button on each Hiking Radio Network page at Hiking Radio Network . Additionally, you can join our membership at Steve (Mighty Blue) Adams. It's worth checking out what is on offer for you there. If you prefer NOT to use PayPal, you can now support us via check by mailing it to Mighty Blue Publishing, 3821 Milflores Drive, Sun City Center, FL 33573. Any support is gratefully received. Additionally, you can “Zelle” me a donation to steve@hikingradionetwork.com. Or “Venmo“ me at @Steve-Adams-105. They both work! If you'd like to take advantage of my book offer (all three of my printed hiking books–with a personal message and signed by me–for $31, including postage to the United States) send a check payable to Mighty Blue Publishing at the address just above.
