Now she finds herself facing a leadership question of her own:How do I move from being known as an executor to becoming a builder, thought leader, people leader, and community leader?Together, Christie Mann and Marlenne design a coaching alliance and explore the beliefs, habits, and assumptions that can keep even the most capable leaders from fully stepping into their potential.Through a future-self visualization rooted in Co-Active coaching, Marlenne connects with the version of herself she hopes to become, only to discover that the qualities she's seeking may already be present. In This Episode:Designing an alliance for safety, bravery, and growthHow future-self coaching can open up leadership growthWhy so many leaders wait for permission before stepping forwardThe difference between executing work and creating lasting impactHow self-trust shapes leadership presenceThe role community plays in personal and professional growthPractical ways to bridge the gap between who you are and who you're becomingAbout Marlenne:Marlenne Johnson is an organizational transformation strategist, storyteller, and systems thinker whose work lives at the intersection of people, power, and change. ABOUT THE EPISODE:There are moments in this journey when your coach isn't available, your therapist can't be reached, and the community is quiet. It's just you and whatever is unfolding in your relationship with your child,, and you need a way through. This episode has been sitting with me for over a year, and I'm glad it's finally here. What I've seen, in my own experience and in watching parents in our community, is that the biggest shifts come from asking yourself the right question and having the honesty to sit with what comes up. That's what CRAFT and the Invitation to Change have taught me, and it's what I tried to distill into these ten questions. These aren't soft prompts. Some are uncomfortable, which means they're working. They ask you to look at your own role in the family system, your behaviors, your responses, your beliefs, because that is the lever you actually control.I walk through all ten, share why each one matters, and give you the context to use them. YOU'LL LEARN:The question I put first, and why it's the hardest oneWhat the hot stove analogy reveals about your child's behaviorHow most parents accidentally reinforce what they most want to stopThe difference between self-care and self-preservationWhat it means to be addicted to your child's addictionEPISODE RESOURCES:Episode 263 on Natural ConsequencesEpisode 17 on Natural ConsequencesTara Brach on Radical AcceptanceEpisode 276 on acceptanceEpisode 321 on taking care of yourselfEpisode 324 with Rawly Glass on codependencyHelping Families Help - find a CRAFT trained therapistThis podcast is part of a nonprofit called Hopestream CommunityLearn about The Stream, our private online community for momsFind us on Instagram hereWatch the podcast on YouTube hereDownload a free e-book, Worried Sick: A Compassionate Guide For Parents When Your Teen or Young Adult Child Misuses Drugs and AlcoholHopestream Community is a registered 501(c)3 nonprofit organization and an Amazon Associate. Why your emotions feel so overwhelming at work (and what's actually driving them) If you've ever had a disproportionate emotional reaction to something at work—like an email, a decision, or a setback—this episode will help you understand why. You'll see how quickly thoughts and emotions interact, and why that speed makes it feel like you're "just reacting." A simple framework to stop spiraling and start responding This episode introduces a practical coaching model that helps you separate what happened from what you're thinking about it. That distinction alone can reduce overwhelm—and give you back a sense of control in situations that usually feel triggering. How to move from emotional paralysis to meaningful action When strong emotions hit, many academics freeze, avoid, or spiral. This episode shows you how to trace your emotions back to the thoughts causing them—and how shifting those thoughts can unlock more productive, intentional action. Why "just getting over it" doesn't work (and what to do instead) If you've tried to push down emotions or power through them, you already know it doesn't work. This episode reframes emotional processing as a skill—and gives you a concrete way to actually process emotions so they don't keep resurfacing. A practical journaling tool to apply immediately to your writing life You'll walk away with a simple, repeatable exercise you can use anytime you feel stuck, reactive, or overwhelmed. Whether it's about writing, teaching, or academic politics, this tool helps you shift from reactivity to intentionality. The hidden stories shaping your academic career  You might think your habits, stress, and writing patterns are just "how things are." This episode will show you how they're actually driven by invisible narratives you absorbed in grad school—and once you see them, you can start to change them. Why academia trains you into scarcity (and how that affects your writing) If you've ever felt like there's never enough time—or never enough money—this episode explains why that feeling is so persistent. You'll see how academia normalizes scarcity thinking and how that mindset quietly shapes your decisions, productivity, and even your willingness to invest in your own growth. The burnout cycle you didn't choose—but might still be living This episode connects the dots between grad school culture and long-term burnout. If you struggle to rest without guilt or feel like you should always be working, you'll recognize exactly where that came from—and why it's not actually serving you anymore. A powerful reframe that could change how you approach time and money What if there was enough time? What if resources weren't as limited as you've been taught? This episode invites you into a bold (and slightly uncomfortable) experiment: trying on an abundance mindset and seeing what shifts in your behavior and decisions. A practical exercise to rewrite your academic identity You won't just leave with insights—you'll leave with something to do. You'll discover what's actually underneath procrastination and perfectionism (hint: it's emotional, not logistical), and why understanding that changes everything about how you approach your writing. A simple question that can instantly unlock stuck projects What if the thing keeping you stuck isn't the task—but the feeling you're trying to avoid? This episode gives you a deceptively simple question that can cut through resistance fast. Once you see it, you won't be able to unsee it—and it might be the key to finally opening that draft you've been avoiding. The mindset shift to move past fear If fear of rejection, failure, or judgment is slowing you down, this episode introduces a question that flips your perspective completely. Most men have 'tried' journalling.A notebook bought with good intentions, three intense entries, then… a book left to gather dust.In episode 238 of The Alcohol ReThink Podcast, Patrick Fox explores why journalling often feels uncomfortable and why that discomfort might be showing up.Patrick shares his own journey with writing. In the beginning, his journal was basically a written version of his inner critic. Pages filled with self-judgement, frustration and 'what's wrong with me?' energy. A jam-packed pity party on lined paper. No wonder it felt unpleasant. What changed? He realised a powerful distinction: you are not your thoughts. And writing something down does not make it true. This episode dives into how journalling can shift from self-criticism to self-coaching. Instead of reinforcing negative beliefs, Patrick explains how to question them, challenge them and gently reshape them using bridge or ladder thoughts that actually feel believable. He also introduces a brilliant analogy from The Magic of Believing, a book written over 75 years ago and recently referenced by Tony Robbins in an interview. The idea? Thoughts are like stones thrown into water. The bigger the stone, the stronger the ripples. Anxious thoughts often carry huge emotional energy. But with practice, you can strengthen new thoughts until their ripples begin to override the old ones. This isn't about forced affirmations or pretending everything's fine. It's about training your mind.If you're ReThinking alcohol, struggling with discipline, or tired of the mental back-and-forth in your own head, this episode will show you how a simple notebook can become one of the most powerful tools in your change process. As ever, take what works and leave the rest. Intentional Living with Tanya Hale

When Christ informed his disciples that one of them would betray them, their response was, 'Is it I, Lord?' When I'm confronted with something that I did wrong or an accusation, most often my immediate response is, 'What are you talking about? I didn't mess that up! How could you accuse me of such a thing?!?' Hmmm. Very telling. I'm obviously not disciple worthy yet! However, I can work on developing the ability to look inward, to see my own failings and weaknesses that will allow me to take responsibility by asking, 'Is it I?' rather than looking outward to blaming, accusing, or criticizing others. It's a process of growth to get there, for all of us, but get there we will if we continue to figure it out a piece at a time.
