What is the psychology behind how the human brain constructs reality? When David Eagleman fell twelve feet off a roof as a child, the entire fall lasted just 0.6 seconds, yet his brain made it feel like an eternity. That moment sparked a lifelong curiosity about the brain and how it constructs perception, ultimately leading him to Stanford and a career in neuroscience. In this episode, David reveals the science of time perception, brain plasticity, and sensory substitution, and why the human brain is far more powerful and expandable than you ever imagined. In this episode, Hala and David will discuss: (00:00) Introduction (01:26) A Childhood Fall That Revealed Time Perception (06:46) How the Brain Constructs Reality  (10:33) Hidden Senses the Human Brain Is Missing (16:46) What Is Brain Plasticity and Livewiring? He is the writer and presenter of the international PBS series The Brain with David Eagleman and The Creative Brain on Netflix. His bestselling book Livewired reveals how the brain adapts in real time, reshaping our understanding of perception, consciousness, and human psychology. Dr. Lisa Riegel: Compliance Isn't Commitment—Coaching the Brain for Lasting Buy-In

    Beyond Coaching

Dr. Lisa Riegel joins Rob Ramseyer to translate neuroscience into practical coaching leadership. She explains why behavior is the intersection of biology and context, how athletes' (and coaches') perceptions are shaped unconsciously, and why teams under stress often lose access to their best decision-making. The conversation moves from brain science to culture-building: psychological safety, proactive leadership, conflict, and why compliance-based leadership produces short-term obedience but not long-term commitment. Lisa closes with actionable routines coaches can use with large rosters to build self-awareness, self-regulation, and trust.Key Topics CoveredNeurowell + leadership: Why real change “starts in the brain,” not in policies.Biology + context: How leaders shape the environment to reduce friction and increase performance.Safe, supportive, proactive culture: A framework for building teams that sustain pressure.Perception filters: Why athletes respond differently to the same coaching behavior.Stress states & performance: Calm → alert (good) → alarm (bad decisions).Team-wide strategies: How to teach self-awareness at scale without needing a massive staff.Psychological safety: Not softness—an engine for disagreement, learning, and resilience.Positivity as training: How routines that notice “good” can shift team worldview and cohesion.Compliance vs commitment: Why punishment-based leadership backfires and what to do instead.Rapid fire: Favorite book, definition of success, favorite podcast, and a daily joy practice.Practical Takeaways for Coaches1) Coach the brain, not just the behaviorAthletes' reactions are often driven by unconscious perception filters. If a player shuts down, it may not be “attitude”—it may be how your style is being associated with past experiences.2) Teach self-regulation like a skillLisa offers a simple framework coaches can run in groups: “Name it, Own it, Control it.”Name it: What do you look/feel like when you're losing control?Own it: What's underneath it—what fear is driving the reaction?Control it: What works for you in the moment (breathing, reset routine, self-talk, walk-away, etc.)?3) Build “safe, supportive, proactive” cultureSafe: Emotional + intellectual safety (including real uncertainty around AI and change).Supportive: Agency + autonomy with accountability.Proactive: Don't get mad at predictable barriers—plan for them.4) Normalize conflict and train resolutionPsychological safety includes how a team handles conflict without fear of getting crushed or ignored.5) Use simple routines to shift team mindsetLisa describes the power of building “positive noticing” into team life (e.g., “two good things” at dinner; appreciation loops in teams) so athletes begin scanning for what's working, not only what's wrong.6) Replace compliance with commitmentPunishment may create compliance, but coaches want buy-in. The better pattern: clarify the “why,” provide a replacement behavior, and reinforce progress with meaningful positive feedback.Memorable Lines / Concepts“Behavior is the intersection of our biology and our context.”“You can't be upset by predictable situations.”“Compliance isn't commitment.”“When the alarm system takes over, the thinking brain checks out.”Books Mentioned / RecommendedNeurowell — Dr. Lisa RiegelAspirations to Operations (includes the 8C Commitment Framework) — Dr. Lisa RiegelAvailable on Amazon.Connect with Dr. Lisa Riegel (lisariegel@epinstitute.net)Educational Partnerships Institute (Founder & CEO): www.epinstitute.net Books: Neurowell and Aspirations to Operations (Amazon)www.lisariegel.com

“Send Coach John a message”I found a memory that popped up in my social media feed from a year ago. I posted this quote: “We rise by lifting each other, not tearing people down.” I needed this reminder and I know others do too… in fact the entire world does. I've had a few comments on the post and it got me thinking about a few things. One is for sure that when you look at the history of our country (the USA), good things happen when we follow this thought! We are inspired to build, invent, create, work together, etc.  Theresa, who is a former student of mine, had some thoughts as to how difficult this can be when dealing with someone who does the opposite of this. It got me thinking about a few things. First I think if we keep being the example of lifting up others (with our words and actions), other people notice - maybe even the negative person. I learned that depending on how well you know the person or are connected to this person, you can actually lift them up when they are in trouble. Life offers countless opportunities for this as we all stumble, fall, have setbacks, struggle, etc. This former student of mine, who is one like so many of them, a “teacher” of mine - as she got me remembering when there were a few times of me taking the low road and attacking the other person. Thinking back to those couple of times, I remember feeling horrible about it because that was not who I wanted to be. It caused me plenty of troubles for sure. I've learned to always strive for taking the high road.  Theresa helped me see this. It all reminds me of this quote - “be the example the world needs to see.” We need more of this for sure!  Thanks for listening.  Please take a few moments to subscribe & share this with someone, also leave a 5 Star rating on Apple Podcasts and ITunes or other services where you find this show.  Find me on Facebook:  https://www.facebook.com/coachtoexpectsuccess/   on Twitter / “X”:  @coachtosuccess   and on Instagram at:  @coachjohndaly  - My YouTube Channel is at: Coach John Daly.   Email me at: CoachJohnDalyPodcast@gmail.com     You can also head on over to https://www.coachtoexpectsuccess.com/ and get in touch with me there on my homepage along with checking out my Top Book list too.  Other things there on my site are being worked on too.  Please let me know that you are reaching out to me from my podcast.  ** I would appreciate anyone to try clicking on the top of the show notes where it says "Send us a text" to leave a few thoughts / comments / questions.  It's a new feature that I'd like to see how it works. **

Positivity is the leadership skill most people dismiss until stress starts running the room. In this episode of Uncomplicate It, I sit down with Lori Rogers, co-founder of Positive Activity and owner of Rogers Marketing, to talk about how mindset, appreciation, and intentional daily habits can transform the way people lead, work, and respond under pressure.Lori shares how a deeply overwhelming season in her personal and professional life pushed her to rethink resilience from the ground up. What started as a personal shift became a practical framework she now uses to help leaders and teams create stronger cultures through appreciation, optimism, and habits that actually stick. Her message is simple and powerful: positivity is not denial. It is discipline. We talk about why so many people wake up already in reaction mode, how small morning practices can change the energy of an entire day, and why the best leaders learn to move from urgency and reactivity into calm, intentional action. We cover: • How small daily habits can shift mindset, energy, and resilience • Why positivity in the workplace is practical, not performative • The difference between productive positivity and toxic positivity • Why appreciation is one of the strongest drivers of performance and retention • How leaders can move from reactive urgency to calm confidence • Lori's approach to starting the day with intention, gratitude, and self-trust • Why energy before strategy changes how people work and leadTakeaways: • Positivity is not about ignoring reality, it is about choosing how to meet it • Small intentional habits can create major shifts in clarity, resilience, and performance • People thrive when they feel appreciated, seen, and supported • Calm leadership creates better decisions than reactive leadership ever will • The way a day starts often shapes everything that followsConnect with Lori: Website — www.positiveactivity.net/ LinkedIn — www.linkedin.com/in/lori-rogers-ma-7a285b5/Follow Us:

The words you choose shape more than your message—they shape your confidence, influence, and leadership presence. In this episode, Karen explores how positive language strengthens communication and leadership impact. Many accomplished professionals unintentionally weaken their message by focusing on problems, hesitation, or what could go wrong. You'll learn simple shifts to speak toward outcomes, replace problem-focused language with solutions, and build stronger self-trust through the words you use every day—elevating both your executive presence and leadership communication.   Speak toward what you want, not what you fear. Direct your language toward the desired outcome instead of focusing on what could go wrong. Replace problem language with possibility language. Acknowledge challenges without amplifying negativity. Focus on solutions and forward movement. Positive language builds self-trust. Your words shape how you see yourself. Speak with clarity and ownership instead of hesitation. Positive communication elevates leadership presence. Leaders who use solution-focused language create psychological safety and stronger collaboration. Positivity is contagious. The emotional tone leaders set through their words influences creativity, engagement, and team culture. Favor to Ask If you enjoy this podcast, please leave a review on Amazon or wherever you listen. My stomach in my throat, I was unable to get the words out (in spite of being in a senior leadership role).  Then, I heard my boss shut down the meeting. My heart sank. I was mortified. It gets reduced to positive thinking, good vibes, or pretending everything is fine. But real optimism is not about denying pain. It is about learning how to stay grounded in reality while still believing that healing, change, and resilience are possible. In this episode of hol+, Dr. Taz sits down with Dr. Deepika Chopra, known as The Optimism Doctor, to explore what optimism actually means and why it matters for both mental and physical health. Together, they unpack the difference between optimism and toxic positivity, why our brains are wired to expect worst-case scenarios, and how that pattern may no longer serve us in modern life. They also explore the science behind sensory-based visual imagery and how the brain responds to what we vividly imagine, often in ways that influence expectation, motivation, and even the body's stress response. Dr. Deepika shares how these tools were used in psych-oncology settings, where patients practiced visualizing treatments working with the body rather than against it, and how similar techniques can support people navigating anxiety, illness, self-doubt, and major life transitions. The conversation expands into practical tools for everyday life, including the 12-second rule, the role of awe in calming anxious or depressive states, and the importance of collecting believable evidence rather than relying on empty affirmations. They also discuss why naming emotions honestly is more healing than suppressing them, how to shift deeply rooted self-beliefs in realistic ways, and why purpose plays such an important role in long-term well-being.Rather than asking listeners to force positivity, this episode offers a more compassionate and evidence-based framework. It is about building optimism as a skill, strengthening resilience over time, and learning to meet hard seasons with honesty, curiosity, and hope. This conversation is for anyone feeling stuck in negative thought loops, overwhelmed by stress, or ready to approach healing with more realism and self-trust.About Dr. Deepika Chopra Dr. Deepika Chopra is a licensed clinical health psychologist, speaker, and author known as the Optimism Doctor. With a background in cognitive behavioral therapy, psych-oncology, and integrative mental health, her work focuses on helping people build resilience through practical, science-based tools. She is the author of The Power of Real Optimism, a book that explores how optimism can be strengthened through everyday practices rooted in psychology, neuroscience, and emotional honesty. I was reminded that while I'm trying to be patient, I can just sit there thinking that just “waiting” will get me through the things or situations I'm waiting on or that those things will be fixed without any effort by me.  One thing for sure, the people in my life that I have good relationships with, they can be there if I need to lean on them. The pivotal transformation occurred during rapid business expansion when he realized he couldn't be present among all his staff anymore, prompting him to develop the 7 Marks of Leadership—a framework inspired by Jesus Christ's leadership example that he discovered during a week-long retreat.Through implementing these marks, Daniel not only restored his family relationships but also created a thriving workplace culture where people feel valued as the unique gifts they are. The post came from Seek Wiser (@SeekWiser_) and it was this: “The best part of being authentic is that there is no image to maintain.  You will delight some and disturb others, and none of it will concern the truth of you being.” The world is so desperate for authenticity. It's so rare and that rarity is the key. It will connect you to others that notice it and are intrigued to learn more about you maybe, just to see if they can be themselves too.
