WDW Radio # 755 - Disney Legend Dave Smith Interview - From the WDW Radio Archives As part of our celebration of the Disney 100 year anniversary, it's only appropriate that this week I go way back into the Archives for an interview with Disney Legend Dave Smith, the founder of the Walt Disney Archives. 13 years ago, I was at work and literally had to lock myself in a closet at my office to interview Dave, who I had known for some time. His name is, and always will be, synonymous with Disney history. From founding the Walt Disney Archives in 1970, to authoring numerous books, Dave Smith's 40 year career with the company afforded him the opportunity to help preserve the magic that began with Walt himself. Dave and I discuss his career, including not just his role in the creation and legacy of the Archives, but its challenges, personal highlights, changes and his future, as he prepares to retire from this “temporary” job that lasted four decades. It's a fascinating conversation not just about the Archives, but the person who made it a reality, and was the guardian of Disney's most treasured memories. Dave sadly passed away in 2019 leaving behind a treasure trove of Disney lore for generations to come. Disney Legend Dave Smith, Disney Archivist Emeritus, joins Mousetalgia this week to tell the true story of Walt Disney's pursuit of P. L. Travers to bring her book Mary Poppins to the screen. In anticipation of the upcoming feature film Saving Mr. Banks, we look into the history of the making of the iconic film and discover the true-life challenges the studio encountered as the film began production. We also talk to a Mousetalgia listener about his own experience dealing personally with P. L. Travers in an attempt to bring Mary Poppins to the stage, and Kristen reports from a preview screening of Saving Mr. Banks. Plus - we give thanks for our Disney blessings in honor of this holiday week, and take a moment to remember the life well-lived of Diane Disney Miller, Walt Disney's daughter, who passed away last week at the age of 79.

This week, visit Walt Disney Feature Animation with Kristen as she takes us behind the scenes from day 3 of her Destination D Diamond-level experience. As part of the special package, a select group of Disney fans were taken to the studios to visit the archives with Disney Legend Dave Smith, and then on to various locations such as Walt Disney's personal screening room, the Ink and Paint department (which is still going strong), and the Roy E. Disney Animation Building, where working animators demonstrated secrets and techniques behind the creation of Wreck-It Ralph, Disney's next animated feature. Also, Jeff and Kristen report from Club 1901, the private lounge for Club 33 members located inside of the Carthay Circle Restaurant in Disney California Adventure.
