Fresh from experiencing the circle of life in the savanna, film journalist Ben Travis and animation academic Sam Summers head just around the river bend to Disney's next renaissance movie: 1995's Pocahontas. Since they can only speak to the film itself – and not its important, and oft-mistold, historical context – they're joined early in the show in a guest slot by historian, lecturer, and Pocahontas And The Powhatan Dilemma author Camilla Townsend, who uses her expertise to dig into the real story behind the one that's (inaccurately) gone down in history, discuss the stuff the Disney film gets wrong, and explain how this film moved the needle on wider understanding of Pocahontas' true identity. Then, it's into the film itself, as Ben and Sam talk the troubling romance at its core, the literary aspirations of its lyrics, how it approaches ideas of colonialism, and the entertaining antics of Flit and Meeko. Jodi, Bridget and Philip review and discuss the 2022 animated film 'The Sea Beast' from Netflix. Walt Disney Animation Studios veteran Chris Williams writes and directs on a film that follows in the footsteps of his past efforts including 'Bolt,' 'Big Hero 6,' and 'Moana.' 'The Sea Beast' offers epic adventure on the high seas where we follow the crew of the 'Inevitable,' the greatest hunters of the terrible sea creatures that haunt the deep. Maisie Brumble is an orphan obsessed with Hunter lore and stows away on the 'Inevitable' to ingratiate herself with Captain Crow and officers Jacob Holland and Sarah Sharpe. Maisie's quick thinking saves the ship during a creature encounter but causes herself and Jacob to be stranded on an island full of creatures. In order to escape, they must rethink their entire relationship to the sea beasts and reevaluate their place amongst the Hunters. After soaring over Agrabah and beyond, film journalist Ben Travis and animation academic Sam Summers make the pilgrimage to Pride Rock to pay tribute to Disney's regal Shakespeare spin: 1994's The Lion King. And they're joined by Simba super-fan Amon Warmann, for a bumper-sized discussion of the biggest Disney film yet. Together, they explore how the film accidentally stumbled into its Hamlet homage, how it rose from being one of the studio's less-prestigious projects into a box office behemoth, and solve the ultimate question: is ‘Be Prepared' a good karaoke song or not? Plus, Ben is thrilled by an alternate universe where a very different pop giant wrote the songs, Sam breaks down the dubious politics of the Pride Lands, Amon rhapsodises about Hans Zimmer's score, and all three are mind-boggled by the bizarre lore of The Lion Guard. The Circle Of Life begins when you press play… Next up: Pocahontas Disniversity is brought to you by Ben Travis (@benstravis) and Sam Summers (@samsummers0), with art by Olly Gibbs and music by Nafets. Philip and Bridget discuss 'Strange World' from Walt Disney Animation Studios. The Walt Disney Company celebrates its 100th anniversary and its feature animation division's 61st animated film, coinciding with a new castle logo redesign to celebrate the centennial milestone. With a premise pulled from pulp novels of the early twentieth century, 'Strange World' places viewers in the mysterious Victorian-styled land of Avalonia. Jaeger Clade is a famous explorer whose life's mission is to find passage through the impenetrable mountains surrounding the known world. Raised to follow in his father's footsteps, Searcher Clade abandons exploration in favor of science and learns to cultivate an energy-rich plant called Pando that technologically revolutionizes Avalonia. When the power of Pando is suddenly threatened, three generations of Jaegers must attempt to solve the problem and learn to work together as a family that hasn't always seen eye-to-eye. The traditional folklore and animistic beliefs of the Sámi, the Indigenous nomadic peoples of northern Sweden, Norway, Finland, and Russia, are under-studied and their cultural significance rarely acknowledged, even in the Scandinavian countries where Sámi traditions have intermingled with mainstream ones. The spread of Christianity and the influence of Christian missionaries in the Scandinavian north have especially distorted and shaped the reception and transmission of Sámi religious beliefs and practices in the modern era. The traditional Sámi religion recently gained widespread attention and reconsideration from a somewhat unexpected source, however, thanks to the incorporation of elements of Sámi folklore in Walt Disney Animation Studios' Frozen movie series. In this episode, artist and folklorist Niina Niskanen joins me to discuss her research into Sámi religious systems, folklore and oral culture, the cultural impacts of Sámi beliefs on mainstream Scandinavian society, how Sámi folklore traditions are represented in mass media, and how pop culture artifacts like Disney's Frozen have prompted a resurgence of interest in Sámi folklore and introduced Sámi culture to a new audience. This episode is part two of a two-part series looking at the Sámi in Disney's Frozen movies; part one, focusing on the making of Frozen II, can be listened to here. Despite the box-office and critical success of Walt Disney Animation Studios' 2013 film Frozen, it also drew criticism and backlash for how it incorporated elements of the culture and heritage of the Sámi, the Indigenous people of northern Sweden, Finland, Norway, and Russia. Sámi representatives had not been consulted in the making of Frozen, and the film's use of elements of Sámi culture such as music and clothing came as a surprise to the Sámi community. In response, when the film's sequel was announced, Sámi organizers forged a partnership with Walt Disney Animation Studios in which a group of Sámi experts offered creative consultation and input on the representation of the Sámi in Frozen 2. In this episode, I speak with Aili Keskitalo, who helped organize the collaboration with Walt Disney Animation Studios during her tenure as President of the Sámi Parliament of Norway, about working with WDAS, Sámi politics, the impact of the Frozen films on the Sámi community, and the importance of telling Indigenous stories with Indigenous voices. The agreement signed between Sámi representatives and Walt Disney Animation Studios is available here. Robert Winfree, Alexis Hejna and Zachery Strobel present their Strange World Disney 2022 Movie Review! Strange World is a 2022 American computer animated science-fiction adventure film produced by Walt Disney Animation Studios and distributed by Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures. The 61st animated film produced by the studio, it was directed by Don Hall, written and co-directed by Qui Nguyen, and produced by Roy Conli. The film stars the voices of Jake Gyllenhaal, Dennis Quaid, Jaboukie Young-White, Gabrielle Union, and Lucy Liu. Set in Avalonia, the film follows the Clades, a legendary family of explorers who must set aside their differences as they embark on a journey to a mysterious land inhabited by surreal lifeforms in order to save a resource called the Pando from losing its energy power source. The film was noted for introducing Walt Disney Animation Studios' first openly LGBTQ teenaged character. The film received generally positive reviews from critics but was a box office bomb, with projections having it lose as much as $147 million for Disney. "Strange World" is the newest film from Walt Disney Animation Studios and reunites director Don Hall with screenwriter Qui Nguyen after they previously collaborated on "Raya And The Last Dragon." With producer Roy Conli, the trio has delivered a progressive family drama about fathers and sons, legacy and acceptance set against the backdrop of the sci-fi adventure genres that borrows influence from many past films to tell a modern story. The three of them were kind enough to talk with us about their work on the film, which you can see in theaters. Please take a listen down below and enjoy! Thank you. With Toontown (and the London Podcast Festival) in the rear-view mirror, film journalist Ben Travis and animation academic Sam Summers get back to the main curriculum to tackle a tale as old as time, and songs as old as rhyme in 1991's Beauty And The Beast. In another bumper-sized episode befitting the might of the Disney Renaissance era, we discuss the film's credentials as a true Gothic Romance, break down the battle of problematic masculinity between Gaston and the Beast, get seriously confused by the actual nature of the curse, and talk about the tragic loss of the legendary Howard Ashman before the film's completion. Plus, Ben does a terrible impression of a Sondheim song, Sam does an excellent impression of Tim Curry, and minds are blown by the incredible ‘snake-on-a-dancefloor' Italian version of the Beauty And The Beast story. Be our guest, and get stuck in. Once again Jessica and Andy return, and this time they bring you perhaps the most delicious meal of cinematic nostalgia imaginable: Pixar's 2007 masterpiece Ratatouille. Jessica reflects on the sheer absurdity of the premise and concept of the film, and Andy contends that the film is nothing short of Writer-Director Brad Bird's personal manifesto on the very notion of greatness. Jessica's cult segment returns, and Andy explains the difference between Walt Disney Animation Studios and Pixar Animation Studios with an unexpected (but warranted) fervor. Following their deep-dive under the sea, film journalist Ben Travis and animation academic Sam Summers are back on dry land to explore the very first canonical Walt Disney Animation Studios sequel: 1990's The Rescuers Down Under. In this episode, we're joined by Empire Magazine's news editor – and huge Down Under fan – Beth Webb as we dig into Bianca and Bernard's long-awaited second adventure, talking the film's environmental themes, exhilarating opening sequence, the revolutionary CAPS system that catapulted the studio into a 3D future, and why it's a vital puzzle piece in the Renaissance era. Plus, Sam takes a special field trip to the British Library, Ben reveals his love of mythical birds, there's much discussion of two horrible lizards, and we find out why Sam particularly related to Bernard's calamitous proposal attempts. Oh, and a warning: there are some truly terrible Australian accents on this episode. Our apologies to the entire nation of Oz.
