This week, in Lancaster, Texas, a brutal triple murder leaves detectives scrambling, but they don't know that the murderer, a dangerous man with a background of violence, had already been caught... and let go. When he is finally recaptured, he decides to confess, calling himself a "monster", but also decides to confess to many more murders, one of which ends up getting an wrongly convicted man off of death row!! Along the way, we find out that drunks are driving all over town, even at noon, that getting overcharged for a tire repair is not a reason for horrible murder, and that it seems odd to pull a man out of intensive care, so you can execute him!! Josh Mankiewicz catches up with Dateline producer Shane Bishop about their classic episode, “Cape Fear.” Young mother Allison Jackson Foy went missing after leaving a Wilmington, North Carolina bar in 2006. Two years later, a man walking in the woods three miles from that bar, found her remains. Just 10 feet away, another set of remains was found—another missing woman, later identified as Angela Rothen. Both women had been murdered. Both murders remain unsolved. Josh and Shane discuss the “Unsolved Case Squad” used in this episode—which included Karen Read's defense attorney Alan Jackson. They share behind the scenes details from Josh's interview with the man Allison's family believes was responsible for her murder—something he denies. Plus, Josh shares an excerpt from his recent interview with Allison's sister, Lisa Valentino, who today volunteers with the CUE Center for Missing Persons. “Lost Lane,” one of the cases she is working on, is featured in Season 4 of Josh's Dateline: Missing in America podcast. If you have a question for Talking Dateline, send us an audio message on social @datelinenbc or leave us a voicemail at 212-413-5252. In this Dateline classic, one woman disappears, and two sets of bones are found near Wilmington, North Carolina. Is one suspect to blame for both deaths? Josh Mankiewicz reports. Originally aired on NBC on April 10, 2009.
Sixteen-year-old Tiffany Reid vanished from Shiprock, New Mexico, on the short walk to Shiprock Northwest High School, on May 17, 2004. This week, in Shakopee, Minnesota, a crazy scene unfolds, when witnesses see a man removing a headless body from his car... in the middle of an intersection. He makes an insane excuse that somehow, he beheaded his wife, by accident, but it's obvious that more is going on. The killer has had mental problems for a while, including believing that his eyes have been removed, and cameras have been implanted in his body!! I saw a meme one time that said, “It's funny how sometimes the people you'd take a bullet for are the ones behind the trigger.” Most of the time that's just a metaphor, a way to describe the way it feels when a loved one betrays you. But not always. Sometimes betrayals come written in blood—and more often than not, from somebody you loved and trusted. You couldn't find a clearer example of that than this week's case, a story where two of the most powerful forces in the world—love and greed—clash, and three innocent people end up paying the price.Join Katie and Whitney, plus the hosts of Last Podcast on the Left, Sinisterhood, and Scared to Death, on the very first CRIMEWAVE true crime cruise! This week, in Wakefield, Massachusetts, when two people are shockingly murdered, it leads detectives down a rabbit hole of mystery, with enemies, business associates, and even possible mafia connections. They end up settling on a much more personal, and nasty motive, all stemming from having fun times, at a lake house. It's a twisted story, filled with conspiracy, lies, partial truths, affairs, and maybe even some reasonable doubt! Along the way, we find out that no one loves mechanical bulls more than Italian people, that even spending time at a lake house can come with some stress, and that you can't lie to everyone, all the time, and get away with it!! Where else but the city of merchants, one whose fortune was founded on global trade to host the celebrity wedding of the digital age's king of commerce?Dateline, Venice. Jeff Bezos, the billionaire owner of online trading platform Amazon, tying the knot with journalist-cum-TV personality Lauren Sanchez in a spectacle that's drawn both paparazzi and protesters. What does this spectacle out of a Fellini movie say about the age we live in? Organizers tempering the extravagance with pledges of giving to good causes. For the world's third richest man, who now owns the Washington Post newspaper, what does money buy? We'll ask about the pushback, and the look for a city that hardly needs more publicity, what with its 150-thousand visitors per day. Blayne Alexander sits down with Andrea Canning to talk about her latest episode, “Center of the Storm.” The 2024 trial of Karen Read garnered national attention as she fought allegations that in 2022, she drunkenly backed her SUV into her boyfriend, Boston police officer John O'Keefe, and left him to die in the snow. After the jury was unable to reach a verdict, the judge declared a mistrial. This year, Read went back on trial and a new jury did deliver a verdict. Andrea tells Blayne what it was like at the courthouse when the verdict was read. She also discusses her interview with Michael Proctor, the former state trooper who the defense accused of having framed Read as part of a coverup. Plus, Andrea shares two podcast-exclusive clips: the first from her interview with Proctor, and the second from her interview with one of John O'Keefe's family members after the verdict.
New evidence. Creepy search history. A thumbs-up selfie taken just hours after four students were killed. And a major Dateline leak that could shake the entire trial.Sources say Bryan Kohberger was circling the King Road house long before the murders. He'd been there 23 times. And the night of the attack? He allegedly left behind a bloody chair print — and a Ka-Bar knife sheath. Investigators say he called his dad's number three times that morning. He also searched for knife sheaths… after the killings. But the biggest shock? How this sealed info got out. The judge is demanding answers — and suspects it may have violated the gag order. On May 5, 2024, Roy Whited did not show up to preach his Sunday service at DeRossett Church of Christ in Sparta, Tennessee. Motivational speakers started really gaining popularity in the 70s and 80s, the golden age of “self-help.” And in recent years, they've been even more in-demand, especially in the business world. You can't swing a dead cat these days without hitting some self-proclaimed entrepreneurial guru who claims to have the formula for success and would be happy to share it with you, if you sign up for their seminar for the low-low price of thousands of dollars. Or buy their TikTok course. But you don't have to get certified or trained to be a motivational speaker, and their industry is almost totally unregulated—meaning, anybody with a megawatt smile and a catchphrase can do it. And according to a Harvard study, most of these guys focus more on entertaining you than teaching you the way to win. It all makes you wonder—are the ones who claim to have all the answers really so enlightened? The fate of Bryan Kohberger's murder trial hangs in the balance as an Idaho judge considers whether to delay the August proceedings over explosive allegations of evidence leaks in a Dateline NBC episode. In a heated hearing, Kohberger's defense argued the Dateline special (featuring unreleased cell data, surveillance footage, and search history) violated a gag order and tainted the jury pool. But prosecutors fired back, calling it a stall tactic in the high-profile case of the four University of Idaho students stabbed to death in 2022. Will the trial proceed as scheduled? Or will leaks, media frenzy, and witness drama force a delay? This week, in Bellevue, Iowa, a woman is horribly murdered, at her own business, just as she arrived for work. Her call to 911 recorded her last moments, and a name, that she screams out in terror. With all the evidence, including post-it notes, pointing at one man, he goes on the run. A manhunt ensues, with police worried that his survival skills will make him a tough one to catch. Will they find this maniac, on the run?? Along the way, we find out that horses should apparently not participate in parades, that you shouldn't rub poop on your mattress, no matter how mad you are at your wife, and that disparaging sings about a person, in the window of your business should be a violation of a restraining order!! Nobody likes to be embarrassed. More often than not, people are kind of weird in one way or another, have some secret history or fascination they'd hate to have dragged out into the light of day. Keith Morrison and Andrea Canning sit down to talk about Keith's classic episode "The Other Side of Paradise.” In 2006, 27-year-old Sandra Galas was found strangled in her car at her home in Hawaii. It would take a combination of new technology, old-fashioned detective work and a father's determination to get closer to solving the case. Keith and Andrea talk about polygraphs, Greek philosophy and what led investigators to their suspect, Sandra's estranged husband, Darren. Plus, they play an exclusive clip from his sentencing and discuss their experiences traveling to the island of Kauai. This leads detectives to the family's teenage daughter's online love interest, a "horrorcore" rapper, who came to visit, after dropping out of school, due to being picked on. Will he confess all the horrific details, or will he insist on his innocence? Along the way, we find out that the town wasn't named after an annoying app based game, that "horrorcore" rap has quite a diverse group of participants, and that if you only rap about murdering people, you probably shouldn't actually murder anybody!! Will it be enough to convict?? This week, in Allen, Oklahoma, when two old friends decide to spend the day "noodling" (pulling fish from a mud hole, using only your hand), the day takes a sideways turn, when mystical forces intervene, specifically, Bigfoot. At least that's what the surviving friend claims. He saysd he only killed, so he could avoid being the victim of a conspiracy between his friend, the US Army, ancient natives, and a family of Bigfeet! But did he just use a bit too much "breakfast meth"?? Along the way, we find out that Oklahoma loves pickles, that you have to be on some kind of intoxicant to want to noodle, and that when you kill a man, in front of Bigfoot, it lets Bigfoot know that you mean business!!
